A/N: Another chapter so soon! Yep, and its a nice long one. A lot of long overdue chats here. Harry has been a wee shit. But at this time in the books he was over emotional and prone to fits of anger, so I think it's pretty on the money. I'm not trying to make him out to be a villain. Just an angsty teenager who's kind of a dick to his sister at times as siblings are.

Has anyone guessed at who her papa is? I've been peppering slight hints here and there, trying not to be too obvious. Still so many secrets Poppy has yet to reveal but things will definetly cheer up after all of the angst and heart-felt drama of late.

As always, I love suggestions or ideas or when someone points out something glaring I've not touched upon. Feedback is always helpful and appreciated!

I hope you enjoy :)

Hogsmeade lay in a damp heap. Stores and houses were still faintly letting off tendrils of dark smoke. Residents had begun tentatively stepping out of their hiding spots in various states of injury.

There were no bodies laying around. Poppy couldn't have held herself together if she had seen the consequences of her actions staring right at her. Some Death Eaters were bound whilst others were being port keyed away before she had the opportunity to look.

Lily stepped forward, lifted her wand and started a diagnostic spell on Harry when Poppy looked up and shook her head, "Do it on the way, he needs to get to the hospital wing" She said quietly and turned to walk slowly back to the castle. Lily Potter hurried along Harry's other side as he floated obediently beside her. Her dad walked behind them with Sirius and Remus flanking his sides.

Strangely, Albus Dumbledore trailed along with the group trudging back to the castle. Snape eventually joined them also on the outskirts of Hogsmeade but remained on the firm border, only just close enough to be considered walking with them.

Her mum peered at her from Harry's side after casting her own diagnostic charms to her satisfaction, the panic and pain smoothing from her lovely face only to be replaced by deep impenetrable worry, "What happened to Harry?" Lily asked, pain subduing her usually sweet voice.

Poppy didn't look at anyone as she reported monotonously, "He was hit in the back with a poisonous slicing curse" She licked her teeth then continued, "He broke two ribs, twisted his ankle, has bruises peppered everywhere, has a mild concussion and was under the crutartis at some point" She paused again before continuing with a worried frown, "I managed to close the wounds and stop the bleeding but he'll need a sprentandula potion to fully recover from the toxins. I also healed his ribs but only temporarily so he'll need a bone strengthening salve and someone to monitor his concussion and a muscle relaxant tonic incase he has any lingering muscle spasms..." she trailed off slowly, eyes trailing over to the potions master lingering on the outside of group. Severus Snape's head moved an inch and dark eyes noticed her look. The potion professors gaze was inscrutable as he assessed her, expression completely stony. He didn't acknowledge her silent request to brew the necessary potion but merely looked away after a few moments. Poppy was however confident he got the message.

Lily visibly shuddered at her assessment, tears filling her eyes though they didn't fall. Her mothers big green eyes shimmered in the light the entire journey. The walk back was slow going, filled with tense and subdued silence. Poppy felt like her emotions had been numbed. Her heart beat steadily in her chest and her legs moved obediently to her command. Yet she felt dead inside.

It felt like an age before they reached the impressive iron wrought gates of Hogwarts Castle. They were closed and the animagus could detect the hum and ripple of strengthened wards and barriers, likely done hastily as a result of the recent attack. Poppy didn't bother taking out her wand but instead waved her hand, sending out a mild pulse of her magical signature, knowing the wards would recognise her as a student and allow her entrance. The massive gates flashed orange then began to open slowly.

The hardened witch felt her companions share meaningful looks but frankly couldn't care less at the moment. Harry was hurt. Her best friend... her old best friend... her brother... Merlin, her bloody twin. How could she be so useless? He was there, right at her back. She failed him. Failed the only person that felt like home to her. The only one who she couldn't imaging living without. He was her world, her everything... her family.

Not that Poppy had a family anymore. No. She had just performed dark magic in front of the entire Order of the Phoenix. James and Lily Potter could now see her as she truly was and not what they expected her to be. Tainted by dark magic, broken and useless. Poppy wasn't their little girl, she never was. Poppy is just a failed experiment, a spare. They didn't even want her in the first place.

Though it was nice, she mused, as she hurried up towards the castle. It was nice to have a loving family, even if it was all a fraud. The illusion of a perfect loving set of parents. Oh, it was always too good to be true. Now she would hear their condemnation. Their horror and disgust. Poppy swallowed as her eyes began to sting. Weak, her mind taunted her.

The underage witch hurried along the empty corridors, her brother obediently floating at her side. It was unusual but the normally bright and airy corridors were dull and heavy grief, as if the very castle itself was in mourning in light of the recent attack.

Fortunately they didn't pass anybody on their journey. Poppy was swift and strode with purpose, ignoring the trail of people behind her. They didn't speak amongst themselves but it was obvious they had much to say.

The animagus saw the hospital wings doors were already open and marched inside to see the infirmary was packed. Students of all ages were lying on the beds, bumps, bruises and burns littering their skin. The smell of healing potions heavy in the air, making her nose tingle unpleasantly. A cursory glance across the room showed her most wounds weren't too horrifying. Only two beds had their curtains closed.

Madam Pomphrey was attending to a second year Hufflepuff at the back of the room when she noticed their entrance. Pomphrey waved towards the only empty bed, in the middle of the room. Poppy moved obediently to the empty side with her brother still floating innocently beside her. The striped haired teenager lifted her wand to move the duvet and float Harry onto the hospital bed. His face was pale but cheeks flushed with his fingers twitching minutely.

The hardened witch lowered herself onto the visitors chair beside the bed and took Harry's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

Madam Pomphrey bustled forward then, all business and stoic efficiency. Poppy appreciated it. The healer began waving her wand in sure and precise movements, frowning and muttering unhappily as she cast her diagnostic charms on Harry.

Madam Pomphrey sighed, "He's lucky. Very lucky, indeed. Silly reckless boy, could have been killed" the healer voice was strained with pain, barely holding onto her professional façade. Poppy's throat tightened at the obvious display of emotion.

"Will he be alright?" James asked seriously, gripping his wife's hand tightly. Lily moved forward with her other hand to lovingly brush the messy fringe of hair away from Harry's forehead. This motion only put his scar on full display.

"Yes, yes, he will make a full recovery. He just needs some potions and salves. He'll be back normal in a week" Madam Pomphrey reported as her wand moved over Harry's back, likely checking his closed wounds.

Poppy ignored the small crowd surrounding her brothers bed in favour of watching his face intently. This was all her fault… all her fault. She should have protected him better. Been more capable and proficient while she had the chance.

The animagus barely detected the sounds of the hospital wing around her. Dumbledore spoke quietly to Madam Pomphrey, asking how the students were fairing.

James stood anxiously at the opposite side of Harry's bed, folding and refolding his arms while casting worried glances towards his son but keeping an ear to the conversations around him.

Sirius looked both livid and heartbroken and he stood there on James' side, looking so stubborn and strong as if ready to take down every perpetrator single handedly. He looked about a single breath away from breaking down, all volatile energy and nowhere to put it.

Remus stood beside his friends, quiet strength and anxious worry clouding his features. His posture was slumped and heavy with the weight of the attack but he continued standing nonetheless and nodding solemnly to Dumbledore's words.

Lily moved slowly beside Poppy and conjured her own chair beside her daughter. Lily's her lovely face drawn in worry but determination as if sheer will power alone could heal her son.

The animagus kept her gaze on Harry's face, frowning as his eyebrow twitched and lips parted. Was he waking up? It would be best he remain unconscious as long as possible.

Poppy detected three well known scents approaching Harry's bed rapidly. Her former friends dashed over to her twins bedside. She spared them a glance.

Hermione gasped, hands flying to her mouth in horror as she stared down at Harry. Ginny broke down in hiccupping sobs, being held around the middle by Hermione. Rons pallor resembled that of the bloody baron, chalky white and grey as his gaze lay transfixed on Harry's still form.

Poppy felt her mother reach down to take her left hand gently in her own. Poppy snatched it back without looking, ignoring how everyone in the immediate vicinity stared at her movement and silence fell upon everyone.

The hospital wing was alive with tears, relieved hugs and worried faces. She noticed the moment the two aurors entered the infirmary, clad all in black and making two intimidating figures amongst the grieving faces.

Mad-eye Moody stomped over to Albus Dumbledore, mumbling angrily under his breath and shooting glares to anyone who looked his way. Nymphadora Tonks strode by his side, her usually bright pink hair was dulled a grey-purple shade, hanging limply around her face.

"What of the village?" Albus Dumbledore asked seriously.

Mad-eye growled, "S'fine. Rounded up most of those bastards. Only a few got away" He relayed with grim satisfaction.

The headmaster nodded; his usually bright sparkling eyes were solemn.

"Any fatalities?" The powerful old wizard asked solemnly.

Mad-eye Moody shuffled on his feet and huffed, "Naw, only a handful of residents were hurt, and the rest is this lot" He motioned to the students in the hospital bed, "They've been moved to St Mungo's, only a dozen or so"

Something similar to surprise flittered across Albus Dumbledore's face as his gaze slid over to Poppy momentarily before asking, "None… on either side?" He asked curiously.

Auror Moody's lips curled in a snarl, "Unfortunately not. No good snivelling foul Death Eaters got better than they deserve" He growled angrily.

Albus Dumbledore's eye lit with interest and he appeared thoughtful for a moment before acknowledging the aurors again, "I see. Is there anything I can help you with?"

Nymphadora Tonks shook her head slowly, her eyes flickering up to catch Poppy's eye before turning back to the Hogwarts headmaster, "No Professor Dumbledore, but we need to have a talk with her" She nodded her head in the direction of Poppy.

Tension seized the small group immediately.

It was James that turned to Nymphadora Tonks with a stiff posture, arms folded and frowning, "What why? Can't you just get witness statements from someone else?" He asked snidely, his entire body language defiant.

Nymphadora eyes went wide and she blinked. Sirius rounded on James' other side, eyes narrowed.

The young female auror looked startled by the hostility she was met with and she furrowed her eyebrows, "Well no. We don't need a witness statement, we need to bring her in for questioning" She explained slowly and clearly.

Mad-eye Moody watched everything from the side-lines, both his magical and regular eye not missing a thing.

Remus frowned at Nymphadora while James seemed to stand up taller, "Questioning?" He repeated, outright anger in his voice now, "What questioning? Why does she need to be questioned? Whatever you've got to ask her you can ask it now" James reared up protectively, tilting his body as if trying to shield Poppy from the aurors gaze.

Poppy watched the entire scene feeling wary and uncertain, hand still grasped tightly in Harry's. Lily Potter beside her sat tall in her chair, eyes narrowing as she lifted her wand to cast a silencing charm around the group.

Nymphadora Tonks looked truly shocked now and blinked rapidly, turning back to peer at Mad-eye Moody with confusion before turning back to James, "What do you mean, why?" She asked with slight irritation, clearly responding to the unfriendliness she was met with, "She cast a dark spell, a seriously powerful dark spell. A fatal one! And she's not of age yet! It didn't even register on the usage of underage magic list. Of course, we need to bring her in for questioning" Nymphadora stood tall, eyes narrowing at James Potter and hair flashing a dark black shade.

Sirius stepped forward before James could open his mouth, "It was in self-defence" He barked at the young auror.

Nymphadora wasn't stepping down however and stepped towards the two glaring wizards, "You don't cast fatal dark curses in self-defence" the metamorphmagus retorted, "What is wrong with you two? acting like bloody idiots! So what if she's underage, she clearly knows some serious dark magic! We don't even know where she comes from, how can you even let Harry near-" Nymphadora's tirade was cut off by the occupant of the bed,

"Poppy would never hurt me!" Harry bellowed as he bolted upright on the bed.

The striped haired witch sighed in both relief and worry at seeing her brother conscious again. Harry was glaring at Nymphadora Tonks even though he likely couldn't see her very well without his glasses. His face was thunderous, cheeks rosy pink and he panted in rage.

Nymphadora Tonks looked slightly abashed as her hair flashed blue and she nodded, looking apologetically at Harry.

James nodded firmly, moving closer to his sons bedside to check on him, "Harry's right, and if you want to question Poppy you better do it here" James said with a no-nonsense tone of voice she'd never heard before.

Sirius agreed with James, "Quite right, we're not letting you take her anywhere" He folded his arms stubbornly.

Nymphadora's eyes drifted to Lily for some support possibly but was met with a stony stare. She then peered towards Remus who was nodding confidently at James words and looking towards the young auror in disapproval.

Auror Tonks then huffed and looked towards Mad-eye again with exasperation, "Can we do it here?" She muttered in sullenly in defeat.

Mad-eye Moody was watching everyone carefully as he stomped forward, "Don't see why not" He agreed gruffly, "She's underage so she'd need some adults and the headmaster here anyway" He grumbled.

Allister Moody marched forward to the side of Harry's bed. Poppy was staring worriedly at her brother as he fumbled with a new pair of glasses then watched Mad-eye's approach like a hawk. Ginny, Hermione and Ron were all hovering around her chair.

The stoic auror regarded her for a moment before starting his interrogation. Poppy merely looked coolly back at the powerful auror.

"Where'd you learn that spell, girly?" Mad-eye Moody grunted out, his regular eye regarding her shrewdly while the magical one swirled around the room.

Everyone around them was deadly silent.

"In a book" Poppy replied honestly, no hesitation in her voice. Oh she knew how auror interrogations worked. Thank you papa.

Moody didn't pause as he immediately asked her, "What book?"

"Summoning, Shields and Dark Conjuring" The animagus replied evenly. Yes, she had read about the spell in a book, that wasn't a lie. However, she had also heard about it extensively from her papa with precise instructions on how it should be cast. Of course she omitted this detail.

Mad-eye narrowed one of his eyes, "Where did you get that book then?" He growled unhappily.

Poppy didn't lie, "It's in the restricted section of the library" again, this was strictly true. The book was there.

"You go looking out dark books in the restricted section then? Like the dark arts, do you?" He leant forward attempting to intimidate her. It didn't work.

James stiffed inching closer to Mad-eye, glaring all the while.

Poppy shook her head, "No, I've just read every book in the restricted section"

Mad-eye looked suspicious, "Why's that?"

Poppy shrugged, "I enjoy sneaking out at night… and reading. It's a personal challenge of mine to try read every book in the restricted section before I graduate" She admitted with a slight false smile. Poppy kept her body relaxed and seemingly at ease. Her muscles relaxed and a small casual smile playing at the corner of her lips. This auror wouldn't get the best of her.

Lily shot her an exasperated look while Harry ducked his head to smile fondly. Hermione sighed and Ron snorted at her admission.

Mad-eye narrowed her eyes at her, clearly suspicious, "You're omitting some details there missy, you're just skirting 'round the edges of these questions. You're better versed in the dark arts than you let on, I can tell" His voice rumbled, and eyes bore into hers.

Poppy nodded her head slowly; he hadn't asked her a direct question this time but she felt this answer was the most important yet. So, she chose her words carefully, feeling everybody's gaze heavy on her, "Yes. I am" She admitted then continued, "I have spent my entire life around dark magic. But I've never been around it voluntarily or learned of it willingly"

Harry's temper seemed to overflow then, "You can't seriously think Poppy's a dark witch, can you?! That's ridiculous" He exclaimed. Poppy cast Harry a puzzled side eye, didn't he think the worst of her? That she was evil, selfish and heartless? Why the sudden change? Merlin Harry what are you thinking?

Mad-eye didn't answer nor look at Harry, he continued staring at her searchingly. She didn't know what he saw.

"Doesn't matter what I think" Mad-eye eventually spoke as he turned to James and Sirius, "Poppy here cast a level 6 dark curse. It's illegal to cast any fatal dark magic– we need to bring her in"

After this statement pandemonium erupted. James Potter drew his wand out and began making threats and shouting. Sirius and Remus also drew their wands protectively, standing on either side of their friend. Lily rose slowly but menacingly, angling her body in front of Poppy, green eyes blazing with determination. Hermione had gasped and while the Weasley siblings were trying to stop Harry struggling to get out of the hospital bed.

Poppy herself just stared wide eyed and mouth opened at the madness surrounding her. Why… were they not letting her get taken away? She cast it! Poppy clearly deserved whatever the aurors deemed fit. Were James and Lily really that much in denial of her? Why was Harry standing up for her so determinedly? Didn't he hate her?

Poppy stood up slowly and every eye in the room darted to her, "please-don't" she said quietly, eyeing the way that James and Sirius were practically standing against two aurors by obstructing the justice and likely ending up arrested themselves.

"It's fine, I'll go in" she said evenly, James Potter frowned at her looked sternly at her as if to say, 'I'll handle this', while Lily slid nearer Poppy's side and curled her arm through hers as if to keep her there by force.

During this small silence Albus Dumbledore stepped forward, eyeing her curiously, "perhaps I may have a solution" he announced calmly, as if the animosity between everyone didn't exist.

Tonks frowned while Mad-eye raised his bushy brows, "You know the law well as I do, Albus" the badly scarred auror grunted, almost sounding curious.

Headmaster Dumbledore nodded before clasping his hands together in front of him, hidden by his long flowing robes.

"Quite right Allister. Any witch or wizard who casts a level 6 dark curse are immediately arrested on spot" he paused then - for dramatic effect likely - Poppy thought bitterly,

"Yet level 6 curses are ones which will ultimately lead to death, or fatal curses, and while protego diaboletica is usually a level 6 curse in this case it doesn't seem to be" He explained lightly, those bright cerulean eyes were endless whirlpools of thought and pondering as they rested upon her. It gave Poppy goosebumps.

Tonks looked confused as she turned to fully face the headmaster, "I don't get it, why isn't the one she cast a level 6 then?"

The headmaster explained, head cocked as he regarded the underage witch at the centre of everyone attention though he addressed the group, "As most of you are aware, dark magic is fuelled by emotion – negative emotions, greed, anger, jealously and such. While most people forget it is also about intent. Poppy's curse was strong and acted effectively as a barrier against her and those who were not completely loyal to her interests. Many Death Eaters were caught in the flames, yet, as Allister just informed me – there were no immediate fatalities"

Realisation dawned a couple of faces while Nymphadora continued looking a bit puzzled.

"Therefore, it was not Poppy's intent to cast a fatal curse. If that was her intention then there would be many casualties, of that I have no doubt. It should not be classified as a level 6. Rather, a level 5 curse" Dumbledore explained before turning to Allister Moody with raised brows,

"Which is, as I believe, are legal to cast in dire circumstances of self-defence" The Hogwarts headmaster finished.

Then tension in the room drained perhaps a little. Poppy sat back down in her chair, partly because she didn't think her legs could hold her while another part was to escape from Lily's firm grip.

The animagus shifted her eyes warily around the group that had all rallied around her. What in Merlin and Morgana's name were they doing? James and Lily Potter didn't really care for her. And Harry, he hated her now right? Why were they bothering with this pretence? There was nothing to bloody gain.

Nymphadora Tonks still looked uncertain and cast a speculative glance in Poppy's direction, "Professor, I still think it might be best if we bring her in to talk. It's all just a bit-"She began, admirably standing her ground with two furious Gryffindors were glaring down at her with wands drawn.

Surprisingly, Mad-eye snorted in amusement, "Good luck with that Tonks, if ye wanty bring her in your gonna have to get through this lot" He jerked his thumb at the small group around Harry's bed.

Nymphadora scowled at her mentor, folding her arms across her chest. Auror Moody turned to talk to Dumbledore again briefly before stomping off to begin interrogations of the caught Death Eaters. Tonks stumbled at his heels, peppering him with questions.

Fortunately, the attention in the room drew towards Harry then as Madam Pomphrey approached to do a brief check-up. It seemed the group had forgotten she was there as they all fret over the boy-who-lived and discussed the attack on the village. Different accounts of the same battle were told many times with the air growing heavy with pain.

Dumbledore left after being assured Harry was going to be alright. Poppy wasn't so distracted not to notice the inquisitive speculation of Albus Dumbledore's face as his eyes drifted by her before he departed. Hermione, Ginny and Ron were eventually ushered away by the persistent healer which then left to check on the other students. After a while, all that was left was the married Potters and their two best friends seated in conjured chairs, all crowded around the saviours bedside.

As the air around the bed grew quieter, Harry's eyes slid over to hers ever so often as he chatted with his parents, but he did not say a word. What was she doing here? Did she even belong? Her parents didn't want her. Harry didn't want her.

"-Then there was this burning pain and everything went back. What happened? Why did Tonks want to take Poppy away? She saved me" Harry recounted his version of events for the umpteenth time, voice ringing with irritation at the end.

At the mention of her name, five sets of eyes shot to her again. She lifted her eyebrows in response. Poppy waited a beat before replying to Harry frankly, "I cast a dark curse" She replied honestly.

Poppy could feel the adults all staring at her though she continued looking at Harry as he frowned. She could not bare to see their condemnation. This is who she was. They would have the accept that.

"What spell?" Her twin brother asked slowly, eyes narrowing, fidgeting with his glasses.

Poppy answered him automatically, "Protego Diaboletica, it's basically a ring of fire that acts as a barrier against those who want to do you harm" She shrugged, attempting to give off an air of nonchalance.

Harry face fell into a scowl as he ruffled his hair, "But you saved me, it's like Dumbledore said, self-defence"

Poppy felt her face flickering with emotions, "…I'm confused" She said very slowly, enunciating each word carefully, "…Don't you hate me?"

Harry's flinched then cringed, curling his body up with green eyes peering up at her, "No, no, I don't-I could never-" He began, working himself up and then huffing out a heavy breath. Her twin brother looked her directly in the eyes as he said humbly,

"I'm sorry Poppy. I'm so sorry. I was such an idiot. A prat, a really big prat. I can't believe how much of a prat I've been. I just-I'm so sorry Poppy"

Her parents and Sirius and Remus seemed the fade into the background, but they were still certainly watching the twins with sharp focus.

Poppy stared at Harry for a few moments, cocking her head to the side. The silence in the air heavy, "What?" She blurted out inelegantly. The fuck was he on about?

Harry looked down in shame, "I-I was a complete tosser Poppy, I'm so sorry. I'm an idiot and I just overreacted, I don't really think you're a coward and heartless… I just didn't get it. I mean, I still don't, not really" He huffed and then sighed, rubbing his eyes, "But I shouldn't have doubted you care and you're there for us. I-I mean you saved me. Helped all those people in Hogsmeade. I guess I just thought because you didn't want to join the Order then you didn't care about us, that you wanted the Death Eaters to win" Harry shook his head at himself in frustration.

James Potter then interjected with a startled, "Wait. That's what you two were fighting about. Joining the Order?" He frowned, completely bewildered.

The Potter twins shared a look before Poppy replied, "Amongst other things" She said cryptically, "But basically yeah"

The adults all frowned heavily at that.

The striped-haired teenager then shook her head firmly as if to shake some sense into herself, "Right, thanks for the vote of confidence Harry but I think I'll be going now" She muttered bitterly.

Lily's head shot in her direction and she looked distressed, "Stay sweetie, please, just-" Her mother gently placed a hand on her shoulder and Poppy jerked away unhappily.

Tension hit the small group again. Lily turned to her with a cautious expression, "Honey, what's wrong?" She said gently.

Poppy kept her face neutral as she looked back, "Nothing at all- I'll see you all-"

"Oh bloody hell Poppy! I'm sick of this! Just tell them or I will!" Harry burst out, indignance and frustration pouring out of his small frame.

Poppy narrowed her eyes at the boy-who-lived as panic shot through her. What was he even talking about? What secret of hers would he reveal?

James looked warily between his children, "Tell us what?" He asked gently, swallowing.

Poppy started at Harry, challenging him to say anything. He wouldn't dare. Not after everything.

Harry huffed then looked towards his mum, "Poppy. She doesn't feel a part of this family. She thinks you two don't care about her" He explained, voice laced with frustration.

Ice shot like lightening down her spine. What? Why would Harry? How did he? Oh Merlin…

Lily approached her but didn't touch this time, "Oh honey, we love you. Why do you think we don't care?" her mother whispered.

Poppy licked her teeth and rolled her shoulders in an attempt to ease tension. The animagus looked back towards Harry with a cool look,

"It's nothing, just Harry being stupid" Poppy muttered, moving as if about to escape this horribly awkward situation.

Remus stood up from his chair to stand before her. His tall frame didn't quite tower over her as that was not his intention, but the werewolf stood an imposing figure as he looked beseechingly at her,

"Poppy, please, talk to your parents. We're all really worried"

The hardened witch could feel her eye twitch involuntarily and her gaze slid over to Sirius. He was the only one still seated yet his grey eyes were cackling with determination. He would not drop this. Given the expressions of the rest of the Potters, the matter would not be dropped either. For fuck sake.

Poppy spun around wildly, chin up to glare at her parents, "Fine, you want to do this?" She asked rhetorically, steeling her spine and mentally preparing herself,

"I know you don't care about me" Poppy folded her arms across her body, her gaze jumping around James and Lily Potter but not quite landing in their eyes, "I know I wasn't wanted. That basically me being here is all a big mistake and you're forced to pretend, well you don't need to anymore-" Her voice was raising in volume as her emotions grew out of control. Weak, her papa taunted her.

Poppy jerked around to escape when James reached out to grab her upper arm, "Wait- no – why do you think that Poppy?" He almost yelled in distressed, voice ever so slightly hoarser.

"Stop pretending!" Poppy shouted, voice hitching as tears rapidly swelled in her eyes. She jerked away from her father, trying to escape his too strong grip.

Fortunately, the hospital wing was empty, all the occupiers having left not long ago, yet the squabbling was so loud it was likely to wake the entire castle if she didn't get a hold of herself.

"No! Poppy tell us why you think that? We aren't pretending, we love you-" James cried out, frantically trying to calm down his emotional teenager daughter.

Poppy was outright crying now, heavy tears falling down her cheeks and chest heaving, "Stop it!" She cried back, her struggle was more out of distress now than a true desire to escape. She just wanted them to stop! Why were they doing this?

"Stop lying- I know- I know-" the animagus chanted, between sobs, shame and self-loathing swirling in her gut.

"Know what?" James Potter cried out.

"That you put me up for adoption!" Poppy screamed.

James' hand dropped from her arm abruptly then as if scalded and he stared at her in disbelief.

Silence blanketed the group yet again, all that could be heard were her harsh breaths. Lily Potter approached her slowly, her own cheeks wet, and expression devastated. Poppy backed up into Remus' chest. She hasn't realised how close he had gotten.

It was Harry that broke the silence, "Is-is that true?" He asked quietly, "Mum? Dad? Did you put Poppy up for adoption?"

Lily's head was shaking firmly and frantically, "No-no, god no! Of course not!" She exclaimed, storming up to her daughter and staring into her eyes determinedly,

"We knew Voldemort would be making his move soon and you were sent away for protection! It wasn't going to be for long! We did it to keep you safe. To save you!"

Poppy swallowed her dry throat and felt her body tremble against Remus' strong frame.

"At an orphanage?" Poppy sobbed out.

Lily couldn't seem to refrain then and lunged forward to embrace her daughter in an all-consuming hug, "Oh honey" Lily sobbed.

The men in the room stood and watched as the mother and daughter embraced each other, both distraught with emotion.

James rubbed his stinging eyes under his glasses, heart heavy in his chest.

Lily rambled into her daughter's hair, "It was the best place for you to go! We didn't trust you with anyone else. We knew someone would find you. It was to keep you away from everything. I'm so so so sorry, Poppy" Lily continued to sob, "It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do" She paused and squeezed her tighter, "Stepping in front of that killing curse was nothing compared to the pain of sending my baby girl away. It nearly killed us Poppy. We love you. We do. So so much. It kills me now seeing what's happened to you. I-I'm so sorry Poppy. I-I should have protec- I failed as-why did this-oh god- please-"

James stepped up to engulf his wife and daughter in his arms as they both sobbed into each other. Lily was loud and gasping while Poppy was silent but trembling. The animagus had learned a long time ago how to cry silently.

James continued where Lily set off, "I'm sorry Poppy. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done, not keeping you safe with us. I'm sorry I couldn't keep us all safe. That you had to go through so much pain. It's all my fault" He croaked.

Poppy gently untangled herself from the warm cocoon of her parents arms and wiped her wet face, "Don't say that" She protested softly, looking up with red eyes at her dad.

He smiled sadly down at her but didn't reply and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

Poppy could scarcely believe it. It all seemed so unreal. They… they always wanted her? How was that even possible?

The animagus had her hands fisted firmly in her mum and dads robes, terrified to let go. She looked down as she spoke to them,

"Maybe… maybe you wanted me then but I'm different now- I'm-" Poppy's voice choked off and her parents embraced her again strongly yet tenderly.

"-We don't care-"

"-It doesn't matter-"

"-you'll always be-"

"-Love you-"

Their voices washed over her like a cool breeze as they rambled over each other. Poppy didn't know what she felt then. It was too raw, too much to either be relieved or upset. It was overwhelming. But in the best possible way.

The animagus pulled back again, "But-but if you've always wanted me then why did Harry get a godfather and I didn't" She asked, desperately grasping to the idea she had planted so firmly in her mind.

Pain and rage in equal measures flickered across her dads face while her mums lovely green eyes darkened. What did-

"Oh" Poppy gasped, as it dawned on her. How had she not figured this out before? Sirius wasn't her godfather. Neither was Remus. That left only one. She detangled herself from her parents and rubbed her face harshly,

"Oh Merlin" She bemoaned, tugging her hair harshly at the roots before looking up at her parents and saying quietly,

"Pettigrew is my godfather… isn't he?" She whispered.

Shell-shock hit both of her parents faces then, they looked like the wind had been forcefully kicked out of them. Their expressions told her all she needed to know. Yes, Peter Pettigrew was her godfather. Merlin's saggy balls. Poppy didn't care if she was revealing information she didn't have to, that she was giving away her secrets. She had to know.

Her dad stepped forward and placed his hands on her shoulders, looking deep into her eyes, "How… how do you know that name?" He asked slowly, fear engulfing his expression.

Poppy swallowed and pulled back then, unsteadily making her way over to Harry. Her twin brother looked misty eyed as he opened his arms and she kneeled onto his hospital bed to burrow into his arms. This was all too much. She couldn't handle this anymore.

Harry welcomed her into his arms, heartbeat steady against her ear and gently placing his arm around her. The animagus burrowed into the warm embrace of her twin, wishing to forget everything around her.

"We've met" Poppy drawled out, attempting to come out dry and uncaring but instead her voice was small and weak.

"What when?" James snapped in displeasure, anxiety and anger creeping onto his face though his eyes were deep with worry.

"Most recently?... Summer before third year" She muttered honestly, taking deep breathes of Harry's comforting scent.

The animagus heard a gasp and peeked around to see Remus stumbling forward, eyes wide and mouth slack as he stared at her, "It was you" He gaped, face sunken with pure shock.

"What was her?" James asked with a frown.

"You-it was you that brought Peter here. You-you brought him to Hogwarts with that note, didn't you? It must have been. He was Ron's pet, who could else have known? Oh my god" Professor Lupin rubbed his face with agitation.

Poppy turned around in Harry's arms to make eye contact with Remus and ashamedly looking away.

Harry clutched her tighter at the mention of Pettigrew, knowing how talk of the Death Eater often made her distraught.

"Wait" Harry interrupted with a heavy frown, "How do you guys know about Pettigrew?" He asked, looking suspiciously between the adults, "Why did you guys make a Death Eater Poppy's godfather?" He asked with a disgusted expression, eyebrows drawn.

The air was heavy and uncomfortable then, Poppy peered up at Harry and shook her head as if to say 'you don't want to know'. She hadn't told him of their parents previous relationship with the rat. She couldn't. It would devastate him.

"I need to go tell Dumbledore, I'll be back" Remus said quietly before she heard his long heavy strides echoing down the hall.

Lily stepped forward and ran a hand through Poppy's hair and sighed heavily, "It's complicated, Harry. I think we all need to have a long talk" She sighed, face troubled.

"Yeah" Harry nodded once shortly.

Poppy kept her head burrowed into Harry's chest. Excellent, more bloody talking and revealing secrets. She was honestly exhausted by this point. Not even duelling in Hogsmeade had taken it out of her this much.

Lily moved away with a sigh, "I'll speak to Madam Pomphrey, maybe she'll let Harry come back to our chambers tonight if we keep an eye on him" She said quietly before leaving towards the healers office.

James approached the side of the bed next to her and crouched on the floor. She peered at him, "Poppy… how do you know… him?" her dad asked her again.

Poppy sighed, "It's… a long story" She muttered.

Lily returned then at the same time as Albus Dumbledore strode through the hospital wing doors with Remus and Professor Snape on either side of him. Her mum and madam Pomphrey fret over Harry for a while before the healer gave the all clear for him to be discharged.

Poppy reluctantly slid off the bed as Harry collected himself to leave, nodding at Madam Pomphrey's words of advice and warning.

The hardened witch noticed Albus Dumbledore and Professor Snape watching her silently. Snape's expression was almost blank, but his dark eyes swirled with suspicion and… intrigue? The headmaster watched her with sharp and intelligent blue eyes, not missing a thing. It was disconcerting having such a powerful wizard's full attention of her. Very unnerving.

Her mum stepped forward to smile at Albus Dumbledore, "Would you care to join us back in our chambers for a cup of tea?" She invited politely.

Dumbledore smiled kindly back at her, "That sounds wonderful Lily" He agreed.

Poppy felt like a convict walking towards the veil of death as they made their way towards her parents Hogwarts chambers. All her secrets were crumbling around her. Where would it leave her?

She didn't know where she was with Harry at the moment. He had apologised to her and seemed to feel very guilty about everything. She didn't know how she felt about that. Her brothers lack of faith hurt her. He abandoned her. After everything Harry has done, how could she forgive him?

Poppy kept by Harry's side as their group marched down the corridors, his injuries fresh in her mind. The inquisition was coming, very soon it was coming and she didn't know how to handle it.

Arriving at her parents chambers, Poppy froze in her tracks at the sight that greeted her. Their rooms were full of guests. The Order. Mad-eye Moody was standing against the wall, face shifting suspiciously at the other faces in the room, his magical eye suddenly landing on her. Poppy felt Harry nudge her forward and she automatically complied, moving towards the armchair in the corner of the room and curling up crossed legged in the squishy chair. Her eyes took everybody in swiftly.

Old Professor Diggle was present, chatting cordially to politely nodding Professor McGonagall. Elphias Dodge had his wand raised and was pouring himself a cup of tea in the kitchen. Mundungus Fletcher sat on the large window ledge squirming, gaze darting greedily around the room. Emmeline Vance sat on the long sofa, chatting with Kingsley Shacklebolt and Nymphadora Tonks. Podmore was trailing along the bookcase, reading the spines curiously.

Her mum had joined Dodge in the kitchen to boil more water and get some biscuits out. Harry came to seat himself at the foot of her chair on the floor, she placed a comforting hand on his messy mop of hair, finding comfort in the small gesture. Her brother leant his head back to give her more access. Thank Merlin he was alright.

Her dad levitated chairs in from the kitchen to be seated in various positions around the coffee table and sofas, making an informal little huddle as if a group meeting was about to take place. Of course, an Order meeting would be happening.

Sirius, Remus and her dad all settled in the chairs, quiet with the occasional glance towards her or Harry.

Snape conjured himself a functional looking wooden chair with a flourish, sitting down stiffly and crossing his legs. The dark potions master, stared towards her with deep unreadable eyes, not saying a word.

Aberforth lumped himself down beside Kingsley Shacklebolt with a mumble for a greeting and sat with folded arms and an impatient look upon his face.

Her mum entered the living room, two trays and five steaming teapots upon them. There was an assortment of biscuits, milk, sugar, cream and other condiments of the trays and the moment they were placed down the group set upon it like hungry beasts.

Poppy watched all this while gently combing through Harry's hair, face stony and heart heavy. Why was she here at this bloody Order meeting?

The animagus was lost in thought until a gentle voice roused her. Her dad was looking towards her expectantly,

"Poppy, love, you wanting a cuppa?" He asked kindly. He leant forward as if about to pour her a cup.

She blinked in confusion towards her father for a moment before shaking her head, "No thanks, I'll get myself one" She said quietly, lifting her left hand and waving her fingers towards an unoccupied teapot.

Unfortunately, her casual display of wandless magic caught the attention of everyone in the room it seemed. She felt extremely uncomfortable as the adults all surveyed her with various looks of interest. The room grew quiet then.

Poppy ignored the sudden shift from amicable chatter to awkward silence as she plucked her tea from mid air and blew on it gently.

"What?" Harry demanded from his place at her feet, "Why's everybody staring at you?" He spoke out rudely, sounding unhappy and protective.

Poppy took a sip before answering, "Probably the wandless and wordless magic, Harry" She answered his demand. Wandless, wordless magic and in her non-dominant wand hand. Idiot girl drawing attention to herself.

Harry looked up at her with a heavy frown, "And? You do that all the time" He huffed in exasperation.

Poppy smiled weakly back at him in response though it didn't reach her eyes.

Dumbledore stood forward then and conjured himself an elaborate armchair, much like the one she was seated on but perhaps more functional looking. His blue eyes twinkled in her direction, intent and focused. This was not good.

"If it's alright, I believe we may begin?" Albus Dumbledore politely inquired to the guests in the room, looking around. Even although it was her parents chambers it was clear who was in charge.

There were various nods and agreements.

The adults faces looked stony and serious as they stared at Albus Dumbledore. He was their commander and they were his loyal servants. It made her feel sick. Her lips curled in disgust around her mug.

Dark eyes watching her made her look up to see Snape still watching her. She looked away.

"We've since discovered the attack on Hogsmeade wasn't a planned assault, but rather an opportunistic move by Death Eaters. There wasn't any command, as far as I'm aware for such an assault but likely a move done to incite terror" The wise old headmaster of Hogswards began his vigilante meeting.

Poppy licked her teeth.

McGonagall looked troubled, "But during a student visitation weekend which happened to take place during an Order meeting? It's too much of a coincidence Albus"

There were various murmurs of agreement.

Professor Dumbledore nodded at his deputy head, "Yes, at the moment we believe so. A tragic and unfortunate oversight we shall not make again" He then turned towards Mad-eye, "How many Death Eaters are currently in custody?"

Mad-eye growled a little from his position along the wall and muttered unintelligibly before answering, "fourteen" He bit out angrily, "Eight in St. Mungo's under guard. Six bloody escaped even though they were under heavy guard and fuckin' barely conscious. Incompetent fuckers watching over them" He muttered then again before speaking up, "Four died from injuries and ones more is probably a gonner" He growled, "Better fate than they bloody deserve"

Dumbledore nodded, "And how many escaped, do you estimate?"

Mad-eye scowled, "anywhere between four n' nine"

Vance raised impressed eyebrows, "This is as good an outcome as we could have hoped for. How are the residents and students?" She asked with a frown.

Dumbledore let out a small relieved smile, "Minor injuries only, very fortunately. Only a few students were injured, and none had to stay overnight in the hospital. All have been accounted for and will make full recoveries"

Relieved chatter started up again quietly while Poppy slowly sipped her tea. At least the attention wasn't on her.

"That's incredible! Thank Merlin all them kids are alright, it's a miracle!" Diggle grinned cheerily, looking around for agreement from those seated around him.

McGonagall still looked troubled, "Yes well, it still should not have happened at all" Her lips were thin, "We were extremely lucky. I learned from Pomona that most of the students were huddled up inside a safe house in the Hogshead. I believe we should we showing our gratitude to Aberforth" She nodded in the direction of the surly old bartender.

Dumbledore looked intrigued at this new snippet of information, looking towards his younger brother. Aberforth scowled harshly,

"Ain't nothing to do with me. Not my bloody safe room" He grunted and jerked a thumb in her direction, "Hers"

Suddenly the entire room shifted towards her again. She cursed her inability to simply fade into the shadows. Why was everything coming back to her?

Auror Tonks frowned, "Wait, why does Poppy have a safe room in Hogs Head?" She asked the question on everyone's mind.

Poppy looked towards the young pink-haired witch and shrugged, "I lived there for a few years"

This wasn't news to most people in the room but some did stare back and forth between her and younger Dumbledore brother curiously.

Nymphadora blinked, "And what? You just built a safe room there?" She asked sceptically.

Poppy nodded in agreement, taking another sip of tea.

The adults exchanged glances.

Her head of House – accustomed to her antics – merely sighed in exasperation and asked, "Why on earth would you build a safe room?" She asked with a long-suffering tone.

Mad-eye grunted then, "Aye, expecting an attack missy?" He growled out suspiciously.

Poppy's lips twitched in amusement, hiding her burgeoning smile behind her teacup, "Not at all. But people are always trying to kill me and Harry. It seemed like the most sensible solution" She tried not to smile towards McGonagall who shot her an unamused look.

The animagus shrugged her shoulder towards her Transfiguration Professor, "Well it's true"

Professor McGonagall pursed her lips but did not disagree.

The room was silent for only a beat when Albus Dumbledore smiled towards her kindly, though his friendly manner didn't fool her, his gaze was sharp and inquisitive.

"Thus brings me to the other reason I called this meeting at such a late hour. I thought perhaps it was time to properly introduce you all to Poppy" The powerful wizard announced to the entire room.

Poppy could tell immediately those who knew of her true parentage. Diggle, Dodge, Vance all knew. The Weasleys all knew, however none were present at this meeting. Everyone else looked puzzled or expectant, waiting for the headmaster to continue.

"I would like to introduce you to Poppy… Potter" He motioned with his hand towards her.

Kingsley's eyebrows raised slightly, and he looked towards James Potter. Her dad nodded once seriously to the auror in confirmation. Nymphadora Tonks' mouth fell open in surprise, eyes darting towards her, Harry, her mum and dad repeatedly, her hair flashing various colours, eventually settling on a purple. Mundungus Fletchers eyes flickered over in interest but showed no visible signs of caring much. Podmore's reaction was the most starling, the man jumped in his seat and looked on his pure disbelief as if he had been told a ridiculous tall tale. Hestia Jones had been chewing a biscuit at the time of the grand reveal, and a sodden lump of sugary biscuit plopped from her mouth onto the floor. The witch blushed and vanished the mess swiftly.

Podmore was the one to exclaim, "But the Potters only had one child! Harry Potter" He gasped.

Both her parents turned to glare at the man, and he looked back sheepishly, cheeks turning pink, "What I meant was… why haven't we heard of a second Potter?" He rephrased more tactfully.

Lily folded her arms neatly in her lap and answered the question with as much dignity as she could, "We had twins. Poppy's existence was kept secret when she was born. She was moved for protection so wasn't there the night Voldemort attacked… she was then assumed dead until she came to Hogwarts. For now, the less people that know of her association to us, the safer she will be" The muggle-born recited mechanically, an unhappy frown playing at the corner of her mouth.

Those who did not know of her affiliation with the Potters, stared rather blatantly at her and between her family members. It was clear they were looking for family resemblance and when they did and did not find it.

Dumbledore then hummed quietly, effectively bringing the attention in the room back to himself, "Yes, Poppy was taken by Peter Pettigrew and assumed to be dead for a long time… and it seems she was the one who brought Pettigrew to our doorstep those years ago" He commented.

Disbelieving eyes turned to her; confusion thick in the air. Harry looked up at her with a frown, so she leant down to whisper in his ear an explanation,

"Scabbers... mind?" She breathed. Harry went stiff and nodded his head. He knew all about her capture of Ron's supposed pet and her handing him over to Dumbledore, thus setting in motion Sirius' release.

McGonagall gaped, "Miss Potter did?"

Dumbledore stroked his beard thoughtfully, and nodded once, "Yes, at least Remus thinks so… is this true Poppy?"

The entire room was staring at her. Her mum and dad looked confused and concerned. Sirius' eyebrows were furrowed in confusion. Dumbledore's gaze was penetrating.

Poppy nodded once with a long sigh, hand drifting to Harry's messy hair again for comfort, "Yes, I did. I bound Pettigrew, attached a note to him and dropped him off at the gates of Hogwarts"

The room was silent as they digested her words. Most still looked disbelieving but also wary.

Surprisingly it was Snape that asked the next question, "The note… it stated, 'If you want to know the truth look into his mind'. There was evidence of… tampering with the rats mind. Someone had recently been through his memories. There was also Obliviation, obscuration and meddling with memories so that his capturer was not exposed. Was this also you?"

Poppy regarded Snape before answering, "Yeah, I didn't want him - or anyone else for that matter – to know it was me"

Her mum turned to her with wide blinking eyes, "You're… you're a legilimens?"

Poppy bit the side of her cheek as she answered, "Yeah, kinda, not a very accomplished one. I'm more proficient at occlumency and memory charms. It's more of just a by-product of that" She explained quietly.

Her mum and dad were staring at her in amazement, like they were seeing her for the first time.

"Wait, what 'truth' were you talking about in the letter?" Tonks asked confusedly.

Poppy's eyes strayed over to Sirius for a split second before returning to Dumbledore. He hadn't missed her brief motion.

"Sirius' innocence" the hardened witch answered shortly, disliking the interrogation.

Sirius startled at the mention of him, grey eyes going wide as he looked at her. Gratitude bled from his face as he smiled at her so gratefully it made her chest ache.

Kingsley Shacklebolt let out a slight laugh and shook his head slowly, "So we've established that Poppy is the secret twin of Harry and long lost Potter, she successfully captured a thought to be dead Death Eater that was in hiding for thirteen years, saved most of the residents of Hogsmeade with her safe room, was living in a pub and is a legilimens?" He reiterated, amusement lacing his tone near the end. The handsome auror smirked amusedly in her direction.

"Anything else we should know?" He joked.

Poppy raised her eyes and smiled somewhat awkwardly. He had no idea.

Remus turned to her with a confused frown, "How did you capture him? How did you find him? Peter that is-did-did he find you?" He asked, voice going deeper at the end in displeasure.

Poppy noticed her father stiffen and mothers fists clenched at the idea.

The striped haired teenager quickly put her parents mind to rest, "No, I found out Ron's 'pet' rat was secretly an animagus… I just asked Ron to borrow his pet over the summer…" Poppy trailed off.

Her dad sighed in exasperation and agitation, "And then you – what – interrogated him? Read his mind, found out all this stuff and then dropped him off anonymously at Hogwarts?" He explained in slight disbelief and a little hysteria.

Poppy peered at her father and nodded with an apologetic smile, "Pretty much yeah"

James Potter sighed heavily and shook his head, "Bloody hell!"

Her dad seemed to be completely out of sorts as he ran his hand through his hair several times, "Because that's the logical thing to do, interrogate the Death Eater, on your own, then just drop him off without telling anyone!" He ranted, gaze turning to Harry,

"You weren't a part of this were you, Harry?" He asked angrily.

Harry's eyes went wide and shook his head frantically, "No, no! Poppy only told me about it later, I was at the Dursleys"

"Where… where did you even interrogate him? In your safe room?" James huffed.

Poppy, feeling abashed, shook her head slowly, hoping he wouldn't press the issue. The impatience growing on his face told her he was not just ranting and demanded an answer.

The underage witch rubbed the back of her neck uncomfortably, "No it was before I worked in Hogshead. It was a muggles house, they were away on holiday and I used it to brew my potions and stuff"

Lily turned on her then, "Brew your potions? What potions? Why were you brewing unsupervised during the summer?" her mother began, voice going up in pitch.

Poppy shrunk into her seat then, abashed and embarrassed, "Umm Euphora Elixer, couple of poison antidotes, Polyjuice… I had to!" Poppy defended herself at the steadily growing outrage on her parents faces, "I had to make money somehow, you know, to pay for Hogwarts, school supplies, food… somewhere to stay, I couldn't keep living outside or squatting at muggles houses!" She defended and then froze at the revelation she had made.

"Out-outside?" Her mother repeated, voice shrill, "Let me get this straight, you were selling backally Polyjuice at age thirteen because you were homeless?"

Poppy stared at her fuming mother but didn't respond.

The entire room were averting their eyes awkwardly and shifting around both rivetted by the conversation and wishing to be elsewhere.

The strong witch tried not to cower in front of the scolding looks of her parents but did shrink back a bit as she bravely replied, "Yes. I had to pay for Hogwarts somehow" her voice didn't even waver.

James and Lily Potter looked to be on the verge of some breakdown, both distraught and throwing incredulous looks her way.

James pulled his hair roughly at the roots, "This is all so insane" He muttered, "Do we know anything about you Poppy?" He complained, turning to look at her in frustration, "And what was that back there in Hogsmeade?! I thought you couldn't even duel! Remus has been giving you lessons! You got a T in your exam!" He burst out.

Poppy bit her lip and squirmed in her seat, "… he's a really good teacher?" Poppy squeaked out.

Harry snorted in amusement so she pulled his hair in retaliation. This wasn't funny!

James turned to frown at Remus, mouth opening as if about to scold the professor. Remus, noticed and pre-emptively held his hands up with wide eyes, "I knew she was well versed in defence but she's an intelligent witch! I had no idea she could duel like that" He muttered, gaze sliding to her.

Mad-eye then chose then to intrude upon her humiliation, "Aye, I'd like tae know who taught you to duel like that" He grunted with curiosity.

Poppy ignored the man until the expectant faces of her parents bored into her. She sighed and ruffled her hair, "I duno?" She huffed, "Reading… practice… a lot of people have tried to kill me before and during Hogwarts… you pick stuff up-I don't" She breathed out.

Her mum eyed her suspiciously, "Practicing with who Poppy?"

The animagus looked towards Aberforth for a moment, enough for everyone to catch on.

The surly old man snorted defensively, "Aye, I duelled her. She's a fuckin' hellion with a wand"

Harry tried to stay inconspicuous as possible, not saying a word to draw attention to himself. Unfortunately he could not stay out of it for long,

"Did you know about this Harry?" His mum asked him directly.

Harry looked up with a small nod, "Um yeah… who do you think taught me to duel properly?" He frowned.

Poppy tugged at his hair viciously, why was he making this worse for her!

The boy-who-lived grunted in pain then huffed with a frown, "Why are you all acting so surprised? It wasn't exactly a secret. If Poppy was so hopeless with a wand I'd have never gotten her help over the years with the stone, the chambers of secrets and the tournament! She taught me the patronus charm!"

James blinked in surprise then, disbelief written all over her face, "She taught you?"

Harry nodded firmly, "Well yeah, who else could it have been?" He muttered.

Lily sighed heavily then and rubbed her face tiredly, "And who taught you Poppy?"

The animagus shrugged once and said weakly, "No one… just kinda read about it and you know" She muttered.

Her mum stared at her with a confused frown. Her dad had his eyebrows up for his hairline with an incredulous expression. Sirius' expression was similar to her dads but his mouth was also open. Remus looked blind-sighted, blinking repeatedly at her.

Sirius leant forward and blinked at her, "Wait. You can produce a fully corporal patronus?" He asked as if for confirmation.

Poppy peeked down at Harry. They shared a look before she answered.

"Well… yeah" She answered.

McGonagall shook her head slowly then and sighed, "We are getting entirely off topic here. Perhaps we might finish this meeting so that the Potters might get some time alone?" She prompted strongly.

Lily shot the Professor a grateful look then.

Poppy had dread curling around her heart. After this meeting the interrogation would only continue, wouldn't it? Even now, the topic of conversation had drifted back to the attack everyone in the room was assessing her, judging her and knew things about her. Personal things.

The meeting seemed to drag on and wrap up much too quickly for her liking. She stayed seated and nodded shortly to the goodbyes sent in her direction, nibbling on her thumb nail anxiously.

Harry had stood up to stretch his legs by this point starting to put away the dishes in the sink and set the living room back rights while her parents said their goodbyes.

After the final order member had departed, everyone puttered about the room for a bit. Sirius popped to the loo and her mum took over the dishes, lightly scolding Harry for putting strain on himself after just being released from the hospital wing.

Her dad pulled out the salve madam Pomphrey insisted he apply every few hours and read the healers instructions with a frown.

Poppy felt trapped. Seated here in the corner of the room, she felt caged in. The striped haired witch stood up and stretched her stiff muscles, peering about the room with a feeling of dread.

She moved towards the sofa, keen to stretch out her legs. She slipped her shoes off, loosened her tie and lay down on the sofa, nuzzling into the couch cushion.

The animagus watched the comings and goings of her strange little family warily for a while. It was all so… domesticated. And unusual. Her parents had seen her cast a dark spell. A powerful dark spell. And yet they were allowing her to sit amongst them. Had even hugged her and told her they loved her. The explanation about the orphanage… could that be true? Was all of this just a horrible horrible coincidence? Did they truly want her?

With her mind swirling and stomach fluttering with uncertainty her eyes grew heavy and eventually drifted closed.

"Poppy… darling, time to get up. Dinners ready" A voice whispered in low tones beside her.

Poppy hummed in response, stretching while her eyes blinked open blearily. Her dad was perched on the end of the sofa she was currently sprawled across. She blinked at him for a moment in confusion,

"Hm?" She asked sleepily, stretching again.

Her dad smiled down at her, "Dinners ready, princess"

Poppy's sleepy mind finally caught up to her and nodded, "Oh" was all she managed to say.

James then stood up and held his hand out to her. Poppy sat up slowly, as one does when wakened from a good sleep and noticed a blanket had been thrown across her at some point. She blinked at the small sign of affection.

"C'mon princess, it'll get cold" Her dad prompted.

"Stay where you are" Her mums voice appeared from the doorway to the kitchen, wand in hand with a happy smile on her face,

"We'll have dinner in the livingroom tonight beside the fire" She announced, coming into the room with steaming plates of dinner floating behind her obediently.

Poppy sat up properly and rubbed her eyes, pulling the blanket more securely around her body.

She watched as her mother directed Sirius and James to fetch the drinks and cutlery while she put the food down on the coffee table.

Remus came and sat down beside her with a kind smile holding out a large mug of something which smelled overly sweet.

Her defence professor held it out to her expectantly for her to take so she did, settling it into her lap, taking a delicate snuff. It was chocolatey smelling with a few marshmallows floating at the top.

"Thought you might need a good cup of hot chocolate" The werewolf said lightly, "Makes everything better" He smiled.

Poppy smiled back at Remus and gently pulled the mug up to take a tentative sip. It was creamy, chocolatey and perfectly warm. The hot chocolate was heavenly and settled in her stomach like a hug.

Her smile grew wide towards Remus, "It's delicious, thank you" She beamed, it was her new favourite drink. Hot chocolate was bloody amazing!

Remus' smile was subdued but face looked to be at peace, content and eyes warm.

Everyone huddled around the small coffee table, sitting with their dinners in their laps, smiling and joking amongst themselves. Sirius was telling Harry an embarrassing story of their dad in school while James was throwing peas at his best friend and glaring while laughing.

Poppy ate her dinner slowly. A lovely roast dinner, it was delicious, but she didn't have much of an appetite.

Remus caught her eye as he asked, "So a corporal patronus huh?" He asked in amusement.

Poppy's lips twitched as she took another heavenly sip, "Maybe"

Remus chuckled in response, "You could have told me that" He said wryly, "There I was asking if you knew what an expellimaus did"

Poppy laughed freely then, remembering their first 'tutoring' session. It felt like so bloody long ago.

"Oi, what you two laughing about?" James interjected with a smile towards them.

Remus shook his head slowly with a smile, "Just reminiscing about our beginners defence lessons at the start of the year" He answered, "And how Poppy failed to mention that she could produce a patronus"

Sirius snorted then and smirked, "Really had you on eh Moony?"

Poppy sent an innocent look towards her defence professor, "In all fairness, you never asked if I could conjure a patronus" She said innocently.

Sirius and her dad laughed at that while Remus shook his head.

Her mum was smiling towards her and asked, "What's form does it take?" She asked excitedly, a proud expression lighting up her face.

Poppy smiled a little bashfully and looked down, very unsure knowing that her patronus took the form of a Stag – her dad animagus form.

"Go on – show them Poppy" Harry prompted with a grin.

Poppy started shaking her head, "Oh I don't-"

Harry stood up then and clambered over to her with a grin, "C'mon Poppy! Show them! It's bloody brilliant"

Poppy gave her twin brother a dry unamused look. He donned a pleading expression, "Please? I almost died today!" He tried to manipulate his way rather pathetically.

The animagus sighed at the boy-who-lived, giving in, afterall they'd find out eventually.

Poppy lifted her wand then stopped when seeing everyone rivetedly watching her. Her mum gave her a soft smile and an encouraging nod.

"Expecto Patronum" She chanted dutifully, mind swirling around hopeful thoughts of her family.

Immediately a large majestic stag burst from her wand, glowing brightly in the dim room. It was massive as it was beautiful, light sparkling off of it as the Stag pranced around the room almost in an arrogant fashion, moving his head as if to show off his large antlers.

Poppy peeked nervously at her dad and saw the complete shock blanketed his face. It told her nothing. She swallowed nervously and sent her stag away with a wave of her wand.

Harry was grinning proudly at her but all the adults were staring at her in shock. Her dad seemed to snap out of it first and leapt from his seat only to pull her up from the sofa and into a bone crushing hug.

Poppy clutched back at her father, leaning her head on his shoulder and hiding her pleased smile. He was happy about it. That was good, wasn't it?

Her dad cuddled her for a few long moments before pulling back. She looked up at him with a nervous smile, "So is it alright?"

James Potters smile was heartfelt and full of love as he replied, "Brilliant" He breathed, eyes a little misty behind his glasses.

Poppy dipped her head but smiled beautifully, glad for her dads approval. After everything… how could he radiate such sheer parental pride? James Potters face was almost glowing as he sat back down, smug and in high spirits as he grinned toothily to everyone seated down.

The animagus drifted back at her seat slowly and noticed Harry sent her a warm smile. She smiled shakily back. Where did things stand with them now?

The mood in the room changed then, it grew a little more serious and expectation floated in the air. Round two of the interrogation, it seemed.

Her mum smiled sadly at her, waving her wand and all the dirty dishes vanished – presumably to the kitchen.

"…Poppy…" She began hesitantly.

The witch in question flung herself back onto the sofa and sighed, "Do we really have to?" She mumbled.

Her dad answered her sadly, "Afraid so princess"

Poppy bit her lip and steeled herself, nodding once firmly. She could get through this. And she would ask her own questions.

Her mum and dad shared a look she could not decipher before her mum regarded her seriously, "Poppy, we aren't trying to accuse you of anything. We'd just like to know…"

The hardened witch mentally prepared herself, she didn't need a bloody family anyway.

Lily stared directly at her as she asked, "You aren't practicing dark magic… are you?" She asked, voice solem.

Poppy blinked, not expecting that though perhaps she should have. Outrage flashed across Harry's face and he immediately cried out, "Of course she's not!" He was silenced with a look for mum.

The animagus noticed all the adults still staring seriously at her so she considered her response carefully, staring down at her lap with a furrowed brow and gnawing at her lips for a few long moments.

Poppy spoke in the same solemn tone and her mother, "No, I don't practice it..." She trailed off, taking note of the relief that seemed to come over every adult present and bravely continued,

"But I do know it. I've picked up a lot of it over the years, I've read about it, seen it… been under it's effects" She confessed quietly, watching her mother flinch and fathers eyes misten, "But I'm not interested in anything to do with the dart arts" She shook her head seriously, pausing the consider her next words carefully, "I've seen what it does to people… to innocents… to misguided wizards… seen the way it festers, leeches onto someone and corrupts"

The air around them was silent, candles flickering to life in the slight breeze as dusk started to fall outside.

Poppy regarded each face before finishing softly, "That said, there's very little I wouldn't do to keep Harry or those I care about safe"

Sirius was staring at her very seriously with unreadable swirling grey eyes. She looked away, unable to stand if it she saw condemnation in his eyes. Remus was stiff but face expression looked a little more compassionate and understanding than others.

Harry's face was loyal solidarity, a stark contrast to his behaviour of late. She couldn't bare to look at her parents.

"Okay, sweetie, we understand" Her mother said softly.

Poppy's head jerked up to stare at Lily Potter almost incredulously, "What?" She blurted inelegantly.

James Potter tried to smile at her, but it was weak, "We get it, princess, we do. We aren't exactly pleased by it… but we understand. We just want to make sure you aren't falling into something you can't get back out of"

Poppy swallowed, both shame and relief curling in her gut, "Oh" She replied stupidly. She wasn't expecting that. They were… so… so bloody accepting. What did this mean?

Poppy remained deep in thought before sighing out in frustration, "That's it? You're both just… okay I casually used dark magic?" She prompted, heart beating wildly in her chest.

Her dad frowned at her, "Well no, Poppy, we don't approve but we understand"

Poppy continued staring dead-pan at her parents, mouth opening and closing a few times.

Harry huffed then in annoyance, "I told you Poppy. They aren't about to disown you" He muttered.

Poppy averted her eyes as her parents gaze swung to her, looking aghast.

"You don't seriously think-" her mum gasped, looking stricken while she looked back warily.

"Well, yous did drop me off once" She muttered.

James Potter shook his head fiercely and stated strongly, "And it was a horrible mistake! We never didn't want you, Poppy. We just-" He blew out a long breath of air before shaking his head again, "We were idiots. But we love you, more than anything, you'll always be family. You don't abandon family. Ever"

Poppy wanted to believe him. She truly did… but could she?

She shifted awkwardly in her seat, "There's a lot you don't know about me" She mumbled.

Her mother smiled at her encouragingly, "And we look forward to finding it out. We want to know everything about you, honey. Good and bad"

Poppy swallowed nervously, feeling put on the spot. Oh Merlin, she didn't want them to know. She really didn't. They… they accepted her. Still wanted her.

James looked at her imploringly, "And we don't want you pretending. We just want you to be honest with us"

Poppy was silent for several long moments before nodding her head slowly, "Okay" She sighed heavily, feeling a huge weight lift from her shoulders.

"I'll-I'll be honest with you and I'll try open up about my past-just-give me time?" She almost pleaded.

Lily came forward then to wrap her daughter up in a protective hug, "Of course, sweetie, take all the time you need" She mumbled into Poppy's hair.

Rasping at the door had everyone jerking around and pulling their wands out. Poppy, of course, had done so also but placed the wood in her hand rather than outright pointing it at the door. She giggled at the battle-ready expressions on everyone's faces. It had been a trying day, that's for sure.

James snapped out of it the quickest and let out a brief laugh along with her before getting up to answer the door. Everyone watched curiously, wondering who would be calling upon the Potters at this hour.

Her dad opened the door to see the anxious expressions of Hermione, Ron and Ginny all hovering outside. James smiled toothily at the group and opened the door wider to let them entrance.

Immediately Ginny raced inside and directly to Harry side, inspecting him with a frown as her brother blushed embarrassedly as Sirius teased him. Ginny sent the handsome Black heir a glare.

To her surprise, Ron and Hermione shuffled over to her. She watched them warily. Dear Merlin, another awkward conversation?

Remus stood up non too subtly, sending a comforting and expectant look her way. Could have been more discreet there Remus. She narrowed her eyes in response to him.

Hermione and Ron pertched themselves on the seat Remus vacated. The muggleborn witch smiling shakily at her while Ron simply stared with hopeful blue eyes.

Merlins saggy balls.

Hermione cleared her throat and played with the hem of her skirt before talking, "We dropped by earlier. But you were sleeping so…" The gryiffindor prefect trailed off before clearing her throat again.

Another tapping at the door had Poppy looking away from her former friends in relief. Wasn't there a limit to the number of uncomfortable conversations you could have in a day? There certainly should be.

Her mum answered the door this time with a friendly smile that dimmed when she saw Dumbledore, Snape and Cornelius Fudge all standing at the threshold of the chambers looking solemn.

Albus Dumbledore took the lead and nodded politely at her mother, "I hope we aren't disturbing you, Lily. We know it's been a trying day"

Lily Potter was no fool and immediately noted the tension and official manner of the men standing before her. She stood tall, a protective aura emanating from her slightly as her features hardened and the door closed over just an inch.

Her mother did an admirable job of smiling back and saying politely, if a bit coolly, "Not at all headmaster. What can we do for you?" She prompted.

Albus began to open his mouth when the incompetent minister stepped forward with a slimy smile, "Sorry to bother you Mrs Potter, it's nothing to do with you or your family. We, however, need to speak to Mr Lupin if you please"

All eyes in the room shot to Remus. Her defence Professor didn't seem phased though his eyebrows did furrow a little bit.

Lily's expressive green eyes seemed to both sink in relief and flash with protectiveness. Remus stepped forward and nudged past Lily, sharing a look between them.

Poppy was watching the interaction very carefully and noticed minute flickering of expressions across the faces of everyone present. Remus had a brief look of shame, dread and discomfort on his handsome but weathered face. Severus Snape's lips curled into a tiny smirk and eyes flashed with enjoyment. Minister Fudge's mouth pursed with disgust and loathing while his eyes looked uncomfortable and almost afraid. When she looked towards Albus Dumbledore he was staring back at her. She maintained eye contact with the powerful wizard before dipping her gaze.

Remus left with the group, the door shutting softly behind them all with a quiet click. All of the adults looked displeased, shifting agitatedly.

Harry spoke up, "What was that about?" He asked with a frown.

Sirius stepped forward and barked, "We just going to leave him to deal with that shit on his own?"

Lily shot the Black heir an irritated look, "Sirius language" She chinned him.

James bit his lip, worried brown eyes looking between his children and running a hand through his hair in exasperation, "Will you kids be alright for a bit while we go see what's happening?" He asked seriously.

Harry and Poppy nodded to their father seriously and watched as Sirius, James and Lily all collected themselves to leave. It was apparent they were preparing themselves for a fight.

Judging by the expressions on everyone's faces it appeared as if the ministry had found out about Remus' condition. This was extremely problematic. What would happen to the kind werewolf? Surely he wouldn't be arrested? Given the anti-creature policies pushed by the Fudge administration it wouldn't surprise her. Although Poppy would hardly let that happen. Thankfully, it seemed like no one else would either.

Lily stressed the importance of relaxing to Harry, telling him to reapply his salves and take his potions if they were gone long. Her dad came up to her and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, "Look after Harry, alright princess?" He murmured.

Harry seemed to hear him and interjected, "I can look after myself" He said sullenly.

Poppy smirked towards her twin brother and stuck her tongue out at him in amusement.

The adults then hurried out the door, hopefully with that kind of support nothing terrible would happen to her favourite werewolf and professor.

As soon as the adults lefts Ginny rounded to the group, "What do you think that was about?" She asked, eyes darting towards everyone to see if anyone had a clue.

Harry frowned and looked back towards the door while Ron answered, "Duno, reckon it can't be good though. Not with that git Fudge there"

Hermione looked troubled and worried as she played with the escaping tendrils of hair in her ponytail.

"He'll be fine. Mum, dad and Sirius won't let anything happen to him" Harry said reassuringly.

The groups attention seemed to turn to her then. Nobody quite knew what to say. It was Ron that broke the steadily growing uncomfortable silence.

"Does this mean you're our mate again?" He asked hopefully.

Hermione gave him a light slap on the arm and scolding look for his lack of tact. Ron jumped away with a large 'ouch' and wide eyes, rubbing his arm.

Poppy watched her former friends with mixed feelings. She sighed heavily, "I duno" She muttered.

Hermione moved forward and placed her hand in Poppy's gently and looked at her imploringly, "Please Poppy, we miss you, we miss you so much. You have no idea. What I did-it was just-I'm such a bitch" The muggleborn witch exclaimed, whiskey eyes bright and passionate.

The animagus watched her warily, trying to ignore the hope bubbling up inside her chest.

Hermione was working herself up and rambling, making Poppy raise her eyebrows slowly, "And it's just not been the same Poppy!" 'Mione continued to rant with furrowed brows, stating her case, "It's not been right, we miss you, you were our friend, our best friend and if you think we are just going to forget six years of friendship then you are mistaken!" Hermione's hair began to cackle with energy, taking on a life of it's own, "You can't just-just throw us away like that! Yes I made a mistake but that's what friends do. We've forgiven you for all the times you've insulted us and hurt our feelings. We are sorry. We are! But we aren't letting this go on. No. No. Poppy we love you and this just isn't fair! No more going off on your own! We're in this together! Best friends! And that's final" She snapped.

Poppy's eyebrows were way up in her hairline and she tried to fight the smile threatening to erupt on her lips.

Ron was gaping at his girlfriend and then smacked him palm to his forehead, "That wasn't how it was supposed to go! Bloody hell"

The animagus snorted in amusement. Ron looked nervously towards her with a hesitant smile, "So… you're our mate again?"

Poppy regarded the people in front of her. Could she do this? Could she really? Why had she stopped talking to them in the first place. Because Hermione was a competitive witch? Because Harry hated her, and wanted her to be a soldier in a war? Maybe because she didn't think she deserved to have friends?

The hardened witch didn't know. She almost lost her brother, her twin, her Harry today. Ron and Hermione were also in Hogsmeade. They could have died also. Did she want to abandon these people, right in the middle of war? To never see them again? Not be able to fight by their side and defend them from the darker side of magic? What if they died and thought she hated them?

No, Poppy couldn't live with that.

She sent a small smile Ron's way, "She's not giving me much choice there, is she mate?" Poppy smiled wryly.

Hermione, honest to god, squealed then and launched herself at the female Potter twin. Poppy caught the feisty Gryffindor and held her as 'Mione attempted to squeeze the life out of her.

When the muggleborn finally pulled back, Harry was smiling brightly at her, eyes soft and loving. She smiled back hesitantly before standing up,

"Right well I think we should go see what's happening with Remus" Poppy announced, eager to get out of this situation and curious to find out what was happening with her favourite werewolf.

Harry stood up then, swaying slightly with a grunt, Ginny quickly holding him up and staring worriedly. Poppy frowned, eyeing her twin speculatively, perhaps she should leave him here…

"I'm going" Harry announced, clearly reading the thoughts running across her face.

The striped haired teenager pursed her lips and casted a diagnostic spell. He would be fine. Tired but fine. She nodded once in agreement.

The foursome left the Potters chambers and made their way swiftly towards the headmasters office, Poppy feeling slightly suffocated by her friends close proximity to her.

Hermione knew the password to the headmasters garyole, being the prefect she was, and the all huddled up the staircase, shifting awkwardly. Poppy rolled her shoulders and donned her determined expression, eager to find out what was to happen to Remus and if she needed to interject.

Poppy was the first to enter, without knocking, but coming in with a friendly smile plastered on her face.

The adults all turned around at the abrupt entrance, her dad frowning at her and her mum putting her hands on her hips and hurrying over to Harry. She could hear Lily scolding Harry for leaving their rooms and getting him a seat but she watched Remus standing beside the window and looking out onto the rainy night grounds.

Sirius stood by his shoulder in silent support while her dad was standing with arms crossed, displeasure coming off of him, it was evident he was in a bad mood.

Albus Dumbledore was the king of his castle, seated at his desk, arms folded and expression lightly curious. Snape stood hovering over the headmasters shoulder, looking displeased and irritated as usual. She sent Dumbledore a look, slightly alarmed to see him catch her eye. She averted hers accordingly.

"What are you guys doing here?" Her dad asked sighing.

Poppy smiled curiously, coming towards her father to give him a light hug. He looked like he sorely needed it and a brief kiss on the cheek, "Came to check everything was alright. It's never a good sign when Minister Pudgey-Fudge shows up" She says lightly, green eyes trailing to the slumped and defeated look of Remus. Clearly, something bad had happened although perhaps not too awful as he was still here.

Her dad pulled back from her hug with a weary sigh, "Just the ministry poking their noses in". She could hear Sirius cursing the ministry under his breath.

Poppy turned to see her mother had conjured Harry and her friend's chairs and one for herself. She smiled at Lily in acknowledgement before settling in at her designated chair at the end of the row, nearest the door beside Ron.

Her mum walked over to her dads side and looked at him though she addressed the students, "It's maybe a good thing you're here. We've got something to tell you" She said softly, eyes darting to Remus worriedly.

Poppy's eyes lit up with interest and she leant forward in her seat a little. Was Lily implying what she thought she was? Were they going to tell them about Remus being a werewolf? This will be interesting, she mused.

"What, what happened? What did the ministry do this time?" Harry demanded, outrage clear on his face.

Her mum smiled sadly at her son.

The headmaster answered her brother, "I'm afraid the ministry seems Remus is no longer fit to be teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts here at Hogwarts. They have demanded his resignation lest they take charges against him"

Harry stood up in anger, "What! Why! They can't just do that… can they?" He protested the injustice.

Hermione shook her head, almost looking as distraught as Harry, "No. No! They can't do that not unless they have just cause" Her friend then paused here then furrowed her brows at everyone in the room, "Do they?"

The adults all exchanged glances. Harry sat back down with a frown, pushing his glasses up his nose.

"What?" He asked when there was no forthcoming answer.

Poppy again drifted her eyes towards Remus where he stood with his back to them, shoulders stiff and staring out the window. Her heart went out to him. It must be extremely difficult. To be so different to everyone else. To be hated, scorned. To be such a dangerous and monstrous creature that could cause absolute devastation. Remus was a lovely man, he didn't deserve this.

Poppy stood up and wandered over to the window, standing by Remus' side to look out the window and sending him a slight smile.

The werewolfs eyes drifted over to her, his expression looking nauseated and filled with dread. Poppy tried something she had only tried with magical creatures before, Remus technically counted, didn't he? Perhaps it would work. Poppy left out a tendril of her magical aura, her spirit wolf one with feelings of comfort and support, hoping he could feel it.

The sharp inhale of breath and wide eyes darting in her direction had her smiling. It had worked. He stared at her, amazement shining in his eyes. She upped the feelings, sending more comforting waves.

Poppy turned back around to pay attention again to the room before her, seeing Harry and Hermione protesting the unfairness of Remus' leaving with Ron and Ginny chiming in with what a great Professor Lupin had been.

A flurry of flames and a sqwak announced the arrival of Fawkes. She ignored the pampered and self-involved bird, even as it sat on its perch and watched her. The spirit wolf inside of her could feel the slight probing curiosity of light waves of magic coming form the creature. She ignored it completely. Stupid bird.

Remus stayed facing the window, while she watched Harry's tantrum with interest.

"It's not fair! Why cant we protest it" He objected loudly again.

Her dad sighed, rubbing his forehead, "It's not that simple Harry" He weakly explained.

"Then explain it, I don't get it!" The boy-who-lived demanded.

Again, looks were exchanged between the adults. Her dad had a conflicted look upon his face and turned towards Remus, "Moony?" He asked slowly.

Remus' shoulders slumped and his eyes squeezed shut, "May aswell" He muttered, "They'll find out eventually" He spoke in a self-depreciating tone.

The spirit wolf continued to send magical waves of comforting aura towards the werewolf. She noted Remus swayed slightly to her side, features softening as if he was drawing strength from her emotions. Another wave of pity ran through her.

Her dad nodded seriously and turned to Harry with one of the most serious expressions she'd ever seen on James Potters face.

"Sit down Harry" He commanded, voice grave.

Her brother, noting the severity of the situation sat down slowly, expectantly looking up at their dad.

James Potter sighed, looking uncomfortable and a bit lost for words. It was unusual seeing the usually easy going man so firm and serious.

"Well, Remus, he-he's got a condition" James said slowly.

Harry continued looking seriously on at their dad, a tiny furrow of confusion at his brow, "condition?" He repeated.

James Potter nodded and looked towards his werewolf friend again, "Yes, he's had it from a really young age" He paused then to regard each of the students seriously, "What you've got to know is that it doesn't change anything. Remus is still the same person he always was. Okay?"

Severus Snape snorted then only to be at the end of Sirius' furious and pointed glare. The potions master merely raised an unimpressed brow at the murderous expression on the ex-convicts face.

Each of the underage students nodded except Poppy, she was more riveted on watching the expressions of her friends than her dad. How would they react? There really was no telling. She hoped they did not react too badly.

"Remus… well… he's a werewolf" James Potter finally announced, worry flashing in his eyes.

Harry blinked in surprise while Ron's mouth fell open in shock, eyes wide and face turning pale. Hermione had gasped, hands going to her mouth, eyes darting to the back of Remus. Ginny meanwhile had screwed her face up and her eyes were wide with fear as she looked at Remus.

James then added firmly, "But this doesn't change anything, He's still the same as he's always been. Despite his monthly transformations"

Hermione was shaking her head at this point and muttering to herself, likely angry she had missed this. It was amusing to watch as the realisation started to dawn on her face as well as the frustration. It was clear she was thinking, 'how did I miss this?'

Harry swallowed but nodded, "So – he turns into a wolf during the full moon right?"

"Yeah" James agreed, gaze shifting between the children and Remus.

Harry frowned, "Only during full moons yeah… then why can't he still teach if he's always been this way" Her twin brother stubbornly protested.

Ron squeaked and stared at Harry as if he was mad.

Poppy's lips quirked in fondness for her brother. He was just so naive at times.

Her mum shook her head sadly, "It's not simple as that Harry, there's a lot of hatred in the wizarding world for werewolves"

Harry frown deepened, "Why?"

Ron turned to his best mate, "Why? Because they're bloody dangerous that's why! This is mental, honestly, a werewolf as our professor?! Never thought they could be one" Ron Weasley looked completely bewildered, looking between everyone in the room as if to reassure he wasn't going mad, "It's mental, honestly. I mean, I can't believe nobody knew. I had no idea! And he's the best defence professor we've ever had!"

Hermione glared at her boyfriend for his lack of tact then looking over sadly to Remus, "Isn't there anything we can do? Surely we can do something against this blatant discrimination" She fret.

Harry's frown abruptly turned into a scowl, "Wait. Remus has always been this way? Why did nobody tell me!" He shouted, standing up in his anger.

Poppy raised her brows and watched the spectacle.

Seeing as nobody had tried to attack him or run him out of the room with pitchforks, Professor Lupin had slowly turned around to measure the room warily and flinched at the anger in Harry's tone.

Lily Potter scolded her son, "It isn't our secret to tell Harry. And it's a very difficult thing to tell anyone. Be happy Remus feels comfortable enough to let you know, he's putting a lot of trust in you" She warned and Harry's anger deflated.

Just then as her twin brother looked over to Remus, his green eyes met hers. Suddenly his scowl was back,

"You!" He shouted, pointing an accusing finger at Poppy. She startled, blinking wildly, "You knew! And you didn't tell me!" He shouted.

Poppy didn't know how to respond, mouth opening and closing for a moment.

"Wait what" Her dad turned around with a baffled look towards her, "Did you know Poppy?" He asked incredulous.

Poppy sheepishly shrugged her shoulders and let out an awkward cough.

Sirius stepped forward with a frown, "Wait, how long've you known?"

Poppy nibbled on her lip as she replied, "Duno, sometime in summer I guess"

"Summer?!" Sirius gaped.

Harry marched forward, "How could you not tell me!" He continued his outrage.

Poppy shrugged helplessly, feeling somewhat desperate, "Well-it's-it's not really my secret to tell"

James looked towards Remus, "You knew Poppy knew?"

Remus looked warily down at her before clearing his throat uncomfortably, "I only found out about a month ago, but yeah, I knew"

Harry continued to fume, "Not your secret to tell! We tell each other everything" Harry demanded, looking betrayed.

Poppy felt her own anger bubbling up, "You're the one always telling me I need more tact! Not to just blurt things out! Noooo, somethings are supposed to be kept secret and there are things you just don't talk about, you're always saying that!"

"This isn't one of those things and you know it" Harry boomed back.

Poppy narrowed her eyes at her twin brother, "Oh, well how is Remus' condition something to just bring up in conversation! Hey, do you think Professor Lupin can hear the heart beats of people around him? Maybe, oh, do you think we should leave Remus alone, it's nearing his time of the month! It's not exactly something you just talk about" She fumed in frustration.

Ron leant forward to mutter to Hermione, trying to be quiet but in the silence of the room it was stark, "You know, I have heard Poppy mention something about Lupin's time of the month and not to bother him. I thought she was just calling him a hormonal woman, like she does with Snape"

The surly potions master turned a thunderous glare onto her while Sirius barked out a muffled laughter, hands in his fist to try and stop the sound escaping.

Harry pursed his lips, "You know it isn't the same thing"

Poppy shook her head in frustration, "How am I the bad guy here? He's the bloody werewolf" She exclaimed, gesturing wildly to the werewolf in question.

Remus jolted at the attention being on him and swallowed nervously.

"He didn't lie to me" Harry snapped back viciously.

Poppy stared on incredulously, how did Remus not and she did?

Her dad then stepped forward to put an end to the arguing by telling Harry off and sending him a disappointed look then telling him to apologise.

Harry deflated suddenly, looking weary and apologetic, "You're right. I-I'm sorry Poppy. It's not you're fault. I guess I'm just surprised and angry. I can't believe no one told me" He muttered again sullenly.

Poppy walked over to give her brother a gentle hug, "It's fine" She whispered. Harry clutched her back and for the first time in almost a year, it felt like things might actually be okay.
