He stirred awake, breathing lightly through a gap in his lips.
The blinding rays of sunlight were the first to meet his bleary dazed eyes. Within mere moments of unconscious staring, he winced at the slight discomfort of the bright light overwhelming his vision.
All too soon came to the immediate awareness.
Every fiber, every joint, every measly move, it ached terribly as did his head. Pounding the force of a hammer on wood. He moved and he turned as if victim to a fever, against the rough, craggy surface he laid upon.
With a heavy grunt and all that he could muster, he sat up, slouching almost in an instant, gasping for the air he did not need. Eventually, his eyes grew accustomed to the harsh light, raising heavy eyelids to the things he has yet to see.
Debris was all around, encasing him amongst the rubble and rock. Looking beyond the crumbled ruins, he found himself within a large gaping, cavernous hole, lying amid remains of begotten structures.
His voice crackled through his throat and slipped passed his dry, dusty lips.
Ultimately, he chose silent. As his gaze averted below, to the small spaces of dirt untouched by the fragments.
A process faster than one could comprehend, something stirred within his head. A playback of events unfolded told piece by piece yet swifter than an instant, a relay of a story, of an outcome that he had chosen.
Eyes widening, horror-stricken, his hand raced to his gut and gripped it tight. Recalling the sword that had plunged deep within, as the pool of blood dribbled ever thicker, ever larger, while he laid sprawled on the blood stained ground, gasping desperately, motions erratic, before he gradually, finally moved no more.
But even as his hand searched thoroughly around his body, he discovered no signs of harm, no wounds bearing from combat. And was left dumbfounded.
YoRHa, the machines, humanity, Adam and Eve, the truth, and his final moments.
Everything he knew... the reality that he awoke into, all for naught. A phantom of a goal long lost.
The recollection of his pointless existence dawned on him once again, in disbelief as before, as lost as before.
Now he had one, and only one inquiry that tore at his chest, and asked the silent, desolate air.
"Why am I alive?"
A gust of wind blew, softly carrying the question laced with the suffering and frustration he felt, to be heard by none. Answered by none.
Anger surged at his arms, and his hands formed to crumpled fists. It was not enough, everything felt infuriating, he wanted to be rid of these feelings that plagued him so, he wanted to shout out aloud the absolute aching misery that enveloped his entire being but restrained himself by gritting his teeth.
Tears began to glimmer within his bright blue eyes and began clenching tightly at his hair, venting his rage, holding clumps at a time, disregarding the pain he felt among others.
Even then he knew, that despite all of his howling, no better outcome would come out of it.
He knew that crying was no use.
Sadness was no use.
Anger was no use.
The turmoil he had suffered, no one was going to care. He shouldn't too. Because he knows after all, as he was told many times before.
Emotions are prohibited.
Author's note: Hello. On a whim, I decided to write a story about Nier:automata. Because I kinda fell in love with it, and also to hopefully get rid of my writer's block which has so plagued me for these past months so that i may hopefully continue my previous story that I dropped. I have a story plan for this, yet I do not know how long I'm planning to let this run, hence the short prologue chapter.
Anyway, short as it is hopefully you enjoy reading it as I did writing it. Follow or something I don't know.
