He knocked on the door of the room Simone and Lena had lent Velma.
"Come in," she answered. He walked in. "What's up, Fred?" She was probably catching up on some reading.
"I just..." He hesitated.
"What is it?"
"There's something I need to get off of my chest. It's been eating at me since I first called you." She closed her book.
"Okay. What do you need to talk about?"
"Do you remember one of the last mysteries we solved before we spilt up? The Moat Monster case?"
"I... Well..." She tilted her head. "I never said this, but I wanted to say I'm sorry."
"When you and Daphne fell off of the balcony, and my first instinct was to save her."
"Ah, I wouldn't worry about it. Like you literally just said, it was instinct. A monster was trying to hurt you, you evaded it."
"You're being way too nice about this."
"Well, what do you want me to say? Do you want me to accuse you of trying to kill me?" She smirked but noticed he still looked upset. "Fred, what you did was understandable."
"I shouldn't have put you in so much danger, though."
"Fred, I joined Mystery, Inc. It's not exactly a danger free job." She crossed her arms. "Besides, I was just fine. I managed to hold on to Daphne and stay there until Shaggy came to help us."
"Yeah, but... Was there a way I could have held on? Tried to at least warn you that I was going to let go? Was there something I could have done differently?"
"Maybe, but you're worrying too much about this. Besides, we're Mystery, Inc. We're very lucky, and we can manage to get ourselves out of all sorts of situations that we get ourselves into." He sighed. "So... Why do you still look super guilty?"
He went silent before his arms flew around her. The stack of books in her lap cascaded to the ground.
"We've definitely made a lot of friends here and there, but you're one of the only best friends I've got! And because I let go, we almost lost you. If that had happened, I never would have been able to forgive myself. I'm scared, Velma. I'm scared of losing you." A small tear slid down her face as she returned the embrace.
"I forgive you," she whispered. "Don't worry. I'm here now and that's all that matters."
