"Yang."
A girl sat quietly on a couch. She had her head leaned back with her eyes closed trying to keep her breathing even. It was becoming difficult to stay calm. Yang was going to Beacon Academy, she was going to leave. Leave her behind. She clenched her hand into a fist and draped her arm across her eyes, fist tightly clenched all the while.
"Damn it," she whispered.
Her kind weren't meant to be alone for long periods of time. It was bad for her health, but Yang didn't know that, barely anyone knew that, but Mina couldn't bring herself to tell her. Would she be able to wait long enough to reapply next year?
It had been a little over two months ago that the both of them applied for the entrance exam for Beacon, and a week since then had passed. Yang's acceptance letter had arrived early, Taiyang, Ruby, and Mina were ecstatic to hear the good news. The little family invited Mina to stay for dinner to celebrate. Afterwards, it felt like the days were slowly crawling by, and one day she was shocked and excited to hear that Ruby had been accepted to Beacon through the headmaster's invitation.
As days passed Mina waited anxiously for the letter to be delivered. The second she saw a piece of mail with the academy's emblem on it she hurriedly sat herself down in her living room and stared at it apprehensively. Suddenly, she didn't want to open it. An odd sense of dread filled her. Her stomach was twisting in on itself and her heart was racing. She couldn't hold back the distressed squeak that left her mouth. Taking a deep breath Mina took the envelope in her hands and slowly tore it open.
Ms. Bunker,
"The admissions committee has met, and I am sorry to inform you that we were not able to admit you to Beacon Aca-
"..." She had no need to read any further.
Mina fought herself not to tear the paper in half, fingers crumpling the edges. Her chest felt tight and tears started to build in her eyes. She shook her head and ran shaky hands through her fleece. Carefully, Mina set the letter down on her lap and smoothed out the edges and put it back in the envelope. That's how she found herself on the couch hours later, mind racing.
I...I failed. Of course I failed. How did I ever think that I could pass? Shit.
She clenched her jaw and screwed her eyes shut breathing deeply through her nose. Yet, despite her best attempts she could feel hot tears trailing down her cheeks.
I blew it. I didn't try hard enough-I'm-I wasn't enough.
Mina uselessly scrubbed her sleeve against her eyes, feeling tears replace those she wiped way. She couldn't stop thinking.
Why couldn't I be smarter? I just-
She drew her legs to her chest and tightly wrapped her arms around her legs, her head bowed.
I don't want to be alone.
