The Slytherin that Returned

The last couple of hours had been the most terrifying of Leanne's life, and all she wanted, no, needed right now was a good few hours of sleep.

She had lost so many people tonight. Her eyes were burning from all the tears she'd cried and she was starting to feel the pangs of pain from the gash she had across her cheek.

As she walked towards the Hufflepuff basement, a part of her dreaded what condition she would find it in. Then a voice stopped her in her tracks.

"Hey, Miller."

She stood in the spot, not turning around as she heard the familiar footsteps approach her. She could feel the heat radiating from the body behind her and had to resist turning around, because what she was feeling at the moment was a mixture of emotions - anger, relief, the pain of betrayal.

"Zubaida," said Leanne quietly. "You're still here."

"I had left with Parkinson…"

Shaking her head, Leanne started to walk away when she felt cold fingers wrap around her wrist, stopping her.

"…But I… I came back. Quite a while ago, actually."

Zubaida held on to Leanne's hand and Leanne didn't pull away either.

"For… For you…"

She could already feel hope blossoming in her chest. The sense of betrayal she had felt as Zubaida left with the rest of Slytherin began to slip away. Just a little bit.

Inhaling deeply and with what she hoped was a composed face, she turned around to face the tall girl with cascading black hair. Usually left loose to hang down to her waist, it was braided tightly today. Her robes were tattered, her emerald green tie hanging loose around her neck.

Before Leanne could say something, the girl's hand shot out to touch her cheek. "You're hurt."

Leanne backed away a little bit, her chest tightening when she saw the hurt flash across her face.

"You know I never really supported… or agreed with… him…" said Zubaida, a thumb caressing Leanne's wrist.

"He's dead now," she replied, staring at their interlocked hands.

Zubaida blinked a few times before swallowing thickly. "You know I never agreed with… V-Voldemort," she finished quickly.

"And yet you left with the rest of them," replied Leanne sadly, still looking at their intertwined hands.

"I was… confused, Annie," said Zubaida, shaking her head. "I wanted to be loyal to my house. They're my family. But I… I couldn't stop thinking about… here on my way back."

Leanne pursed her lips, but her eyes were already tearing up as she looked into Zubaida's dark eyes.

"What about your parents?" asked Leanne, looking up at her. "I'm not a pureblood. I'm not an Indian either. I'm not even a guy."

"They'll come around," she said before giving her a watery smile. "They'll come around. They have to."

Leanne couldn't help but let out a little laugh as she raised herself on her toes to touch her lips to Zubaida's.

A/N: Zubaida Khan is an Indian character from Slytherin as listed on Wikia and part of one of the Harry Potter video games. Also, I made up a surname for Leanne - Leanne Miller.
