Chapter Fifty-Eight: Savior Lelouch.
Lelouch had awoken in Atlantis and found himself in his and Kallen's bed. His wounds had been treated and he gathered his strength in quiet since his wife had refused to let him be troubled for any issue. She did let him out of their bedroom to observe a meteor shower that was truly breathtaking.
"Actually I'm pretty sure those are the remnants of V.V's satellites burning up in the atmosphere," he once said.
And despite Kallen's efforts to ensure he had nothing but peace and quiet Lelouch was sure to be kept aware of what was going on in the world. He just had to practice hiding it from his wife. With V.V. dead any remnant of the Eden Elite had either surrendered without a fight or gone underground. Several of the nobles who had sided with V.V. during his original rise to power had also gone underground.
The Fleet had been focused on helping with reconstruction efforts in the most effected areas of V.V's Ragnarok plan. While he was recovering his mother had taken up dealing with the UFN. Most interesting was how the whole world now seemed to be calling him the Black King of Justice. Demand was high that he take the throne of Britannia, at least from Britannian people. However there were some who were against the idea of another Emperor of Britannia with Geass powers assuming the throne. Not to mention the fact that he had the absolute loyalty of the Geass Order and was still Supreme Leader of the Atlas Fleet. The Atlas Fleet was another issue, with V.V. gone the need for the Fleet was being called into question by some.
All of this was going to converge and once he was strong enough Lelouch would have to face the world to establish this new status quo. And as with dealing with his uncle he'd have to plan accordingly. First he would need his allies, preferably if they what he knew.
The various sects of the Fleet had been traveling through different areas after the death of V.V. While a majority of the fighting had ended a sense of lawlessness had come up in various parts of the world. One of the major areas was Britannia itself.
Looters, self armed vigilante rebel gangs, and those whose anger had simply not ebbed with the death of V.V. As one of the sects who still had full enough resources at the end of the fighting the White Samurai had been tasked with stabilizing certain hots spot areas along with the Emerald Tricksters and other sects. Suzaku had deputized several self armed groups in order to form a citizens watch that would keep the peace until the Empire was stabilized.
"Can you believe it?" said Urabe, as the Holy Swords sat on the steps of the ruined Pendragon Palace. "We started out working for the Japanese Liberation Front and now here we are keeping the peace in Britannia."
"Britannia was just as oppressed as Japan," said Tohdoh.
"You know it might be a twisted way of thinking but do you guys ever wonder if we might have been unintentionally doing V.V's dirty work for him," said Asahina.
"What the hell are you talking about?" snapped Chiba.
"Well think about it, a lot of rebel groups in Japan, before Lelouch came along, were attacking either the Britannian military or the people," said Asahina. "All the while V.V. and the Eden Elite stayed in Britannia itself. Their actions were forcing people to the Areas to try and escape him. Between the Eden Elite and the rebels the regular military and citizenry were being crushed on both fronts."
"And V.V. didn't care what the rebels did to the people," said Tohdoh. "A truly hateful man, may he burn for all time. To Zero."
"To Zero," the other swords repeated as they raised their glasses.
"So how long do you think we'll be in Britannia?" asked Senba.
"The Emerald Tricksters will be remaining in Pendragon itself," said Tohdoh. "The rest of the White Samurai will continue our stabilization efforts. Arm and train resistance fighters so they can keep the peace until the military and police proper can be reestablished."
"So most likely a good long while," said Chiba. "But even with Britannian resistance we're going to need more manpower. Not all of the Eden Elite have fully surrendered and not all rebels are saints."
"Suzaku and I were speaking with Marianne about that earlier," said Tohdoh. "We'll be bringing in outside help from Zilkhistan."
"Mercenaries?" groaned Urabe.
"Mercenaries from a nation that holds a Geass power base of its own," said Suzaku, walking up to his allies with Euphemia in tow.
He motioned for them not to git up and took a seat with his wife along with the rest of them.
"Marianne hopes that by giving Zilkhistan work she can begin trying to get the Farlaf organization to join back with the Geass Order," said Suzaku. "She feels that so long as the nation is able to thrive the siblings who rule won't cause trouble for us later. Though trouble might still come no matter what."
"What's wrong?" asked Tohdoh.
"Keep it in house but Kaguya told me there might be some in the UFN who are looking to disband the Atlas Fleet," said Suzaku.
Urabe spat out his drink after hearing this.
"What the hell?" he yelled.
"Are they serious?" asked Chiba.
"What are they thinking?" growled Senba.
"This is all rumor at this point but I thought you should know," said Suzaku. "With V.V. dead and the Eden Elite dying off or going underground, the E.U. disbanded, and the Chinese Federation being reorganized, the political landscape is about to change dramatically. As far as anyone is concerned there is only one superpower now and I'm married to one of his sisters."
"And that fact is making certain people nervous," said Euphie.
"What people?" yelled Asahina.
"Politicians most likely," said Tohdoh. "Lelouch's popularity across the world is going to make them nervous. And if he becomes Emperor of Britannia he will have the full support of her military, her people, most likely Euro Britannian, and the Geass Order."
"So what?" said Urabe. "He is the rightful heir isn't he?"
"Yes, but he's also Supreme Leader of the Atlas Fleet," said Senba. "Not to mention married to the Empress of Japan."
"Kallen's only a figurehead though, true authority belongs with the new National Diet," said Chiba.
"Once again it comes down to how popular she is with the people," said Tohdoh. "They will follow their Empress and if she has given her heart to the Emperor of Britannia they will most likely move to have Japan join with Britannia."
"Still that's none of the UFN's business," said Urabe. "That's a matter between Japan and Britannia. And if that's how it goes I'm all for it. Beats one oppressing the other."
"And that's another issue," said Suzaku. "Some nations are demanding reparations from Britannia for damage done by the previous regime. Their words not mine."
"Alright now that is bullshit," said Asahina. "Have they not seen the pictures we've been sending to them? V.V. did as much damage to his people as he did to other nations."
"The fury of the oppressed often does not give way to reason," said Tohdoh.
"And those assholes seriously think Lelouch will give any of them a cent when he becomes Emperor?" said Urabe. "What could they do?"
"Nothing, that's the issue," said Suzaku.
"Excuse me?" asked Senba.
"Lelouch is not one to be bullied and he will not tolerate any further humiliation to befall his people," said Euphie. "He will most certainly work to make things right but he will ensure that Britannians can live with dignity once more."
"Here here," said Chiba.
"And what does any of this have to do with disbanding the Atlas Fleet?" asked Senba.
"The Atlas Fleet was formed to battle V.V. and the Eden Elite," said Tohdoh. "The need no longer exists as far as many are concerned I'm sure."
"Well what are we supposed to do then?" asked Urabe. "Go back and join the Japanese military?"
"Isn't that what we've always wanted?" asked Asahina. "To get Japan back and live our lives the way they were supposed to be before the invasion."
"I suppose," said Chiba. "What about you two? Euphie, will you go back to being a princess of Britannia?"
"Yeah, and I guess that would make you a prince eh Kururugi?" laughed Senba.
Suzaku said nothing while Euphie chuckled.
"Actually, I do not know," said Euphie. "Cornelia has expressed no true interest in regaining her royal status or returning to the Britannian military. In fact, I hope the Fleet doesn't get disbanded. It is home and you...are my family."
Suzaku held his wife's hand gently while the others smiled. They were a family, what else could they call themselves.
Family, the one thing Akito thought he would never have again. But then he joined W-0 and met Leila. His heart opened up to his new friends and to her. And now it looked like his family was growing.
And he was not the only one who found a new growing family.
"I'm sorry, I'm not the greatest at speeches but I will do my best," said Rivalz, taking a stand at the table where sat Duke Velaines and his new bride Maria. "I never thought I'd be doing something like this. I never thought a lot of things would happen to me in life. Everything I ever knew or thought would happen to me changed. When I became a cyborg I thought I had lost my humanity. I thought I wouldn't be able to connect with anyone truly human ever again. When my...when my mother died I thought I was alone. I thought I was a bastard and without my mother I was without a family. It was something I thought I'd never have again. When I first arrived in Euro Britannia I hid on my ship, convinced that I'd never find a place to belong. Then at the counsel of someone very wise, if not a bit pushy, friend gave me the push I needed. If I hadn't gone to the festival I wouldn't have found what would become my new family. If not for that I don't think I could have become who I am now. Finding Maria and Alice, becoming close to them, and having the support of Duke Velaines...saved me in more ways than I can think. So I'm glad I have the chance to be here to thank them for that. And I'm glad you all came here to celebrate Lady M...to celebrate Mother and Father with me."
The gathered guests applauded as a tearful Maria and Augusta stood to hug their new son. The young bridesmaid Alice also hugged her brother. Rivalz looked and saw Akito at a nearby table and motioned for him to join. Akito tried to ignore him but Leila gave him a push.
Watching all of this Cornelia smiled and didn't even mind the fact that Rivalz considered her pushy.
'I push because I love,' she thought as she gently moved her foot up Guilford's leg.
Their own wedding was done privately not long after V.V's demise. A small ceremony on Atlantis with immediate friends and family. Now free of the threat her uncle posed on her loved ones Cornelia could finally give herself to the happiness she had long been denied.
Between her wedding and this one, Cornelia was indeed finding herself happy. Enough that she was willing to ignore the political issues that had been springing up in the wake of her uncle's demise. The issue of succession, the issue of the Atlas Fleet potentially being disbanded, the issue of Euro Britannia's potential reunification with Britannia proper, all a great mess that her uncle left for the rest of them to clean up.
But even with the mess, she was happy. Her family was safe and as she sipped the water she partook in instead of the wine the others drank Cornelia was happy in the fact it was growing.
Recovered enough Lelouch stood at the top of the great pyramid. There the people of the Geass Order congregated in worship of him. He had no doubt that this would be a in issue that the UFN would like to bring up.
Rumors of them wanting to disband the Atlas Fleet had reached his ears. As well as other issues on the fate of Britannia now that V.V. was no more.
"The world's savior standing alone," said Ohgi, walking up to Lelouch.
"Kallen is still asleep," said Lelouch. "I've recovered enough of my strength. I plan to attend the next meeting of the UFN. I'm sure they're quite eager to hear what I have to say."
"Indeed," said Ohgi. "And they have a lot to say to you. I'm sure most of it will be thanks though."
"And yet the rest of it will most likely be issues about who rules Britannia now," said Lelouch. "As well as the fate of the Atlas Fleet."
"I always figured that eventually the UFN would take issue with us," said Lelouch. "The power of Geass is now known worldwide. As well as Britannia's history with it. Even if I'm regarded as the World's Savior there will be those who take issue with me ascending to the throne. At least so long as I have the Atlas Fleet behind me. Hence they will either force me to give up my claim or force the Fleet to disband. Neither of which they truly have the power to do you realize."
"I know, militarily the Atlas Fleet is the strongest and most ready force at this time," said Ohgi. "Not to mention if the people found out about this there would be rioting in whatever nation tried to dethrone their savior. At least they're not trying to crucify you."
"So long as no one has offered silver to any of my disciples," said Lelouch. "What exactly do you want of life now Ohgi? Japan is liberated and now governs herself once more. I've served my purpose, my use to you has ended."
"Yes, Japan is free," said Ohgi. "But I'm oddly not sure how to feel about that?"
"Why not?" asked Lelouch.
"I'm...I'm not the same person I was when you found me in that ghetto," said Ohgi.
"I'm not the same person I was then either," said Lelouch. "We've all grown over the course of this war. Stronger, more jaded, but hopefully wiser and better."
"I doubt I've grown wiser," said Ohgi. "Ever since I saw Naoto as that Beast my ability to trust people has been shaken. And then there was that time I was forced to watch as my own country began tearing itself apart when you were in your coma."
"The Neo-Shogunate," said Lelouch.
"And I have a feeling the sentiments that spawned them are still alive and well in Japan," said Ohgi. "You've read reports coming in from the Britannian Homeland no doubt."
"I have," said Lelouch. "Over the years my uncle's proving grounds have left several key areas of the Homeland virtually uninhabitable. It'll take time to bring them back to normal but..."
"But in the meantime the Homeland cannot sustain an influx of Britannians who face the possibility of deportation from former Areas now that they are liberated," said Ohgi. "And not every Area government was as gentle as one might hope."
"I know, a number of former Viceroys who were sympathetic to my uncle are now either in custody or have gone underground," said Lelouch. "Along with any and all Eden Elite forces who did not surrender or escaped capture or execution. If any of them are clever they'll be laying low. They'd be unwelcome in most countries but could easily set up lucrative criminal enterprises to help fund attempts to rebuild their forces. I intend to use this little fact when I speak with the UFN. The Atlas Fleet must not be allowed to dissolve in case the Eden Elite or any such group rises again."
"I'm sure that'll get a lot of people on your side," said Ohgi. "But you and I both know there is a simpler way. But you won't do it, because...you are a good man Lelouch. And...I'm sorry I've been so doubtful of you so much. You might not have known this but...I took back my present. I thought of a better one."
Ohgi reached into his coat and pulled out a somewhat beaten up red headband. It looked like it had been repaired but none the less held scars.
"This was...Naoto's," said Ohgi.
Lelouch gasped as he gently took the band.
"When Naoto started our group he had a magic to him that made people believe in him," said Ohgi. "He stoked a fire in our hearts and gave us hope that we could regain Japan. And more than that we could do it honorably. He always insisted we attack only those who could fight back and even then I think he had us pull our punches because he knew the real enemy were the Eden Elite. He even tried to get some Britannians in on the group but he couldn't get us into agreement. When he died or...when we thought he died, we lost that magic. We were just fighting and then I decided to hijack some poison gas with the intent on using it on the Britannian people. Then you came along and I thought we found that magic again."
"Then the Questing Beast," said Lelouch, recalling how he had first met Naoto.
"And everything fell apart in me again," said Ohgi. "I...couldn't believe in that magic again. No matter how much I wanted to. No matter how blatantly obvious it was that you were a good man who didn't at any point let the great power he had make him do anything less than what was right. I was just so..."
"Afraid," Lelouch said with a sigh. "I think I know what that's like. After my father died and mother had to leave us I could do nothing but watch as Britannia was corrupted. The beacon of possibility my father envisioned was darkened and everyone was just accepting it. That without my father, my people had no courage, no hope that they could be anything more than what V.V. beat them into. He had the magic too but...so did I because...because my father lit it within me and it was all I had left of him. Ohgi, what Naoto inspired in you didn't die with him and it wasn't made wrong when he was corrupted. It was always there it...it just weakened I think. I think we all have our times when our faith is smothered but no matter what the embers are still there just needing to be cultivated so they can burn bright again."
"Then...you are a stronger man than I am Lelouch," said Ohgi.
"It's not a weakness to lose faith when you feel betrayed," said Lelouch. "But...what Naoto stood for was greater than the man himself. No matter what he became that ideal was something Bludbierd and V.V. could never pervert. Something purer, brighter, and greater than any one nation can claim for itself. Because...because hope is greater than fear and it will always burn eternal."
And with that everything in Lelouch's mind became clear.
"Ohgi, I will treasure this gift for as long as I live," said Lelouch, holding up the headband. "And I will honor the true Naoto Kozuki and my father. And I will always strive to ensure that one day you, and everyone else, can believe in their type of magic once again."
Ohgi looked at Lelouch, stunned silent, and shed a tear. Smiling gently, he stretched out his hand which Lelouch took gladly.
"I believe you...Zero," said Ohgi.
Despite her young age Kaguya Sumeragi had proven to be very skilled in the handling of government affairs. Acting now as Chairwoman for the United Federation of Nations she was now in a position to help fix what V.V. sought to break. Though that was going to be a challenge if these new voices popping up were going to keep making their, in her opinion, outlandish and quite frankly stupid claims.
Claims about restrictions on Geass Users. Ensuring that Lelouch never takes the Throne of Britannia. The potential disbanding of the Atlas Fleet. Breaking up Britannia and preventing a reunification with Euro Britannia. The list went on and on.
'Do these people not realize that Lelouch saved them all from destruction?' thought Kaguya as she went over he mountain of paperwork.
"Lady Kaguya, your tea is ready," said Rolo, entering her office holding a tray of tea.
"Oh thank you, please just set it down there," she said, motioning to a clear spot on the desk.
"Yes my lady," said Rolo.
The brown haired young man, for one reason or another, had somehow managed to cling to Kaguya like a lost puppy. An apt description for whenever she looked into his eyes, as if he were pleading for someone to show him any kind of affection. Perhaps that was why he had clung to his beloved 'big brother' Schneizel for so long before somewhere down the line transferring to her.
She didn't mind, it was nice to have a helper and a friend. And if Lelouch's marriage to Kallen was as monogamous as it appeared it would be, much to her disappointment, she imagined Rolo could mean more to her down the line. Especially since she could almost detect Marianne having some hand in Rolo being assigned to her as a guard. If that was the case she had to applaud the former Empress, though it only made her sad that she wouldn't become her mother-in-law.
Another wedding was taking place in this world, post-V.V. One that he himself had banned if for nothing other than spite. Marrybell Mel Britannia finally wed her lover Oldrin Zevon in full view of the Golden Coven, Silver Angels, and Emerald Tricksters sects of the Fleet.
"Always did love a wedding," said Gino, in full regalia of his heroic persona. "How about yourselves?"
"It was wonderful," said Nunnally, seated at one of the guest tables.
She was still somewhat weak from her ordeal with Bludbierd but none the less insisted on doing all she could in stabilizing Britannia after her uncle's death. Though the effort did nothing for her exhaustion she was happy she could help her people overcome the horror inflicted upon them. Standing behind her was her own fiance, Rai, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Yes, it looks like we can all move on," said Rai, looking over at another scene.
At the dance floor he saw Orpheus and Monica of all people. With V.V. dead and as it was revealed, his own uncle Oiaguro was also dead, Orpheus had been left somewhat lost. With no other choice than to finally confront his feelings of sadness and guilt over losing Euliya and making peace with them. And with Monica, whom Bludbierd's curse nearly caused him to kill.
"New beginnings," Rai said. "What about you Gino? Will you retire the Robin Hood and the mask of Stag?"
"Retire? Are you kidding?" laughed Gino. "I'm never giving up either."
"Are you sure that's wise?" asked Nunnally. "I've been talking with Kaguya and she's said there are rumors among the UFN about..."
"About disbanding the Fleet," said Gino. "Yeah, I've heard that through the grapevine as well. So far it only appears to be in house and hasn't gotten to the general public yet. Kind of odd how that's happened don't you think? We hear about it, are told to keep it in the Fleet, and so far hasn't gotten out. Almost as if someone wants people in the Fleet to talk about it among themselves before the matter is made public knowledge."
"That's a bit of a stretch isn't it?" asked Rai.
"Perhaps, but I'd like to see the UFN try to take us apart," said Gino. "And no one is taking Robin Hood away from me. I intend to use it to keep up the fight and bring justice back to Britannia."
"Do you realize how corny you sound?" asked Rai.
"Indeed I do," said Gino. "But I mean every word. V.V. and the Eden Elite made a mess of the Homeland and even with them gone not everyone is gong to be happy about that. Criminals are going to start popping up and try to take advantage of the lack of order to set up their own little empires to fill the void. Not to mention any former rebel that might decide it'd be smart idea to form their own little fiefdoms. V.V. may be gone but our job is still far from over. And if the UFN wants to disband us they're fools."
"It's a political move," said Rai. "It's what usually happens when a Revolution is successful. The heroes of the revolution are the ones who either become the next political nightmare or the would be politicians who did none of the fighting use the heroes for their own ends. They want to cut our heads off before we cause trouble for them."
"That's enough now both of you," said Nunnally. "For right now this is about my half-sister finally being able to marry the woman she loves. We can leave all this other talk for later now stop it."
"Yes, ma'am," the two men said.
Kallen looked over Rakshata's designs for a new model of the Guren. A lovely red and gold number she had been working on with her younger sister with some input from Lelouch.
"Should I really be surprised Lelouch has been able to arrange things even when I keep him in bed so he could recover in peace?" said Kallen.
"He is a resourceful one your husband," said Rakshata. "He calls this little beauty the Guren Aigis."
"Aegis?" asked Kallen.
"From Greek myth, the shield of Zeus," said Rakshata. "Zero said it seemed to fit you."
"Shield eh?" said Kallen. "Guren Aigis, I like it, it sounds fitting."
"I hope so," said Lelouch, walking up to the two of them. "I trust my life to none like I would trust it to you Kallen. That you would ever be my shield, as well as my queen."
Kallen enveloped her husband in a loving embrace while Rakshata chuckled. Lelouch then ushered Kallen away and let the Indian scientist continue her work. There were matters he needed to discuss with his wife. Not that he did not trust Rakshata, but that he knew she wouldn't be interested and he wished for her to focus on her work.
"I wanted you to rest in peace," said Kallen. "You don't need all this stress."
"I'm rested enough and it was better I be kept informed about what's going on," said Lelouch. "Soon enough I intend to speak with the UFN. Then we shall discuss the world post-V.V. Have you heard about the rumors from the UFN?"
"I have but...you spread them yourself didn't you?" asked Kallen.
"Well I told Kaguya and she told Suzaku. Then Milly might have spread a few things around Rivalz," said Lelouch. "It should have reached just about every member of Color Guard. I'll be calling a meeting with them soon enough."
"What for?" asked Kallen.
"All of us joined together under the concept of defeating V.V.," said Lelouch. "We've accomplished that mission. If it is the decision of any member of the Atlas Fleet to resign from our ranks and pursue a new path in life they are free do to do. As for any member of the Color Guard."
"I'm staying with you, no matter what," said Kallen.
"I know," said Lelouch, holding his wife's hand tightly. "Thank you."
Even after all the time that had passed Marianne was still regarded as the beloved Empress of Britannia. And with the nobility going underground the only ones left in Britannia proper were the commoners who always saw her as one of them.
Spearheading much of the rebuilding of Britannia had left her with time to think. To think about the complications involving her children. Specifically Lelouch's actions in regards to Julius. Setting him up as a sacrificial lamb and then banishing him with C.C, or Ceanea as she went by in C's World, to some unknown fate.
While she could not argue that justice was needed for the dishonor Julius had done to her, Kallen, Nunnally, and of course Charles, she still suffered. She had been robbed of one of her children, not by fate but by the plot of a madman. And she was still denied the time with her son that was stolen from her.
'I was robbed of time with all three of my children,' she thought. 'I will never forgive you for that Vincent.'
She tried to banish dark thoughts as she approached the one place Vincent at least managed to keep decent. A grave in honor of Charles. As much a monster as he became there was still a part of Vincent that would have always loved Charles and wanted his remains kept in a respectful place.
"Thank you, my love," she said, kneeling down before her husband's grave. "Our son wouldn't have survived without you. The whole world is now waiting for what he will do next. I don't think he'll take Britannia. It's too small for him now. You've become Phillip and he's Alexander. Whatever he does...I know he will make you proud. Watch over him, and Julius wherever he is now. Whatever road both of them travel I know it will eventually converge. I just hope that history does not repeat itself. My this cycle of vengeance die with Vincent and our family one day be made whole. That...is my greatest hope."
Marianne felt something strange happen to her body as her Code began to glow gold for a second before returning to normal. She didn't know what it meant but...she could feel that whatever happened it was for the best.
"Thank you my love," Marianne sighed, tears flowing down her cheeks.
From a respectful distance Bismark watched and smiled. Though he and Marianne were lovers he knew that her heart was linked with Charles in a truly special way. And he would always respect that and watch over her for eternity. It was his duty as Charles's knight after all.
As soon as everyone was able to find the time to come. When duty or celebration was satisfied, the members of the Color Guard and their various lieutenants gathered around a great round tale that stood before the throne of the Supreme Leader. Also gathered were Kaguya, Tianzi, and Xingke and his people
"I'm glad everyone could find the time to come," said Lelouch, seated at the table with Kallen by his side. "Rather than beat around with pleasantries let us get to the subject. Rumors are circulating the UFN that certain parties are going to try and put forth a movement to disband the Atlas Fleet."
"They can try dammit," yelled Tamaki.
Tamaki's crude, though passionate statement was met with supportive applause and much table banging.
"Nothing is confirmed," said Kaguya. "Only a minority of delegates are bringing up the subject. The majority of the UFN supports the Atlas Fleet and is grateful for their efforts in destroying the Demon V.V."
"So if they're so grateful why is this even an issue?" asked Akito.
"Because our Supreme Leader is the rightful heir to the Britannian Throne," said Suzaku. "I'm sure to some the idea of Lelouch being both is enough to make them nervous. Especially if you bring Geass into the mix. Combining both roles and with the full support of the Geass Order would allow Lelouch all the power he'd need to not only make Britannia into the absolute superpower of the world but to ensure it remains that way forever. And the Geass Order have been spreading their gospel about a renewed Geass Civilization ever since Kallen secured Japan from the Neo-Shogunate. Hence it's understandable why certain politicians are nervous. But given how Lelouch is the Black King of Justice, at least as far as the people are concerned they can't voice their objections less they feel the wrath of the people. And if they lose the support of the people they lose all legitimacy and may as well beg Lelouch to rule over them."
"So the second best way of keeping Lelouch from gaining all that power would be to disband the Atlas Fleet," said Rai. "And since a number of us aren't Britannian citizens we wouldn't be obliged to follow Lelouch into Britannia."
"But even more damning would be the fact that since we fought with Lelouch we'd know his weaknesses as well as his strengths," said Suzaku.
"Hey, hey, let's not talk about this as if it's some conspiracy alright?" said Rivalz. "Like Kaguya said it's mostly just rumor from a minority in the UFN that are most likely new to office. And they're nervous which I think they have a right to be. Not of Lelouch, god no, but it's a whole new world now. I think we're all a little edgy and we're just looking to find out what the rules are now."
"That's right," said Lelouch. "The world is an uneasy place now. It is in need of stability. Right now we've got a fragile calm over the world. Some areas are still hot but as far as everyone the war is over. That however does not mean we are at peace."
"The only stability we have now is because of you Zero," said Ohgi. "Take that away and we lose that stability."
"Agreed but we'd also lose it if we alienate the UFN," said Schneizel.
"Well it's not like they can force us to disband can they?" asked Rivalz.
"Militarily no," said Cornelia. "Though I'm not suggesting we push our luck."
"And we just ended a global war" said Tohdoh. "We should avoid starting another one. However it would be foolish to let the Fleet disband at this time."
"At any time you mean," said Gino. "We can't just pretend the world will go back to normal. Everyone knows about Geass, that psychic power is real and it is effective in war. That kind of knowledge is something arms developers and potential demagogues salivate over. If the Atlas Fleet doesn't exist to stop those kinds of people from rising up in the world who will. And not to mention those who already do have Geass powers? All in all it appears to be a minority in the world. And a fearful majority does not tend to accept the differing minority with grace."
"Are you saying that just to ensure your own fine ass gets protected if people come after you?" asked Ayano.
"So you admit I have a fine ass worth protecting eh?" said Gino.
Everyone couldn't help but laugh while Ayano tried to hide her blush.
"All kidding aside he's right," said Rai. "Eventually there will be those who come to blame Geass for its use in V.V's tyranny. And there are those in the Order who simply want to live in peace and practice their beliefs. Who will defend them?"
"And who will defend the world from them if other rogue Geass users rise up?" asked Cornelia. "Another V.V. must not be allowed to rise."
"Okay so let me see if I can get this all straight," said Rivalz. "We either A) Disband the Fleet and leave the world in a fragile state where anything can happen? Or B) Keep the Fleet together but risk alienating the UFN, or at least a minority which could still grow? Am I following along well enough?"
"A bit oversimplified but yes," said Lelouch. "But as I said Rivalz, an oversimplification of a rather complicated situation. Newly liberated nations will no doubt have issue with the Britannian Empire gaining more power. Regardless of if I am different from V.V. or not. My uncle's actions have left a scar on my mother country that will take years to fade. And the world naturally would not like the idea of another absolute monarch with the power of Geass on his side."
"Its not that they don't have legitimate grievances but they're not offering viable solutions," said Xingke. "Though there is another option. Lelouch abdicates the throne."
"Outrageous," roared Cornelia. "Lelouch is the rightful heir. Our people are begging him to take the throne."
"Even a great number in the House of Lords in Euro Britannia are hoping Lelouch will take the throne," said Rivalz. "That it'll help a potential reunification between Britannia proper and Euro Britannia. Though there are those who are still voicing Euro Britannia remain an independent nation."
"If the people want Lelouch on the throne that's it, end of story," said Ryo. "The UFN can't do anything about that."
"Not without violating the very principles on which they were founded," said Leila.
"Guys come on this is all bullshit and we know it," said Tamaki. "Besides Lelouch could always, persuade the UFN, if you know what I..."
"NEVER," yelled Lelouch, his Geass flashing in his eyes.
Tamaki suddenly found himself falling over.
"What the hell?" he yelled, mirroring everyone else's surprise.
"Apparently my joining with the Collective Unconscious has left me somewhat altered," said Lelouch. "But back to the matter at hand. I will never use my original Geass to force my will onto others for political gain. As for the matters of my ascension to the throne and the UFN's desire to disband the fleet, I already have a plan to deal with it all when I speak to the UFN later this week."
"Then...why did you ask us to meet?" asked Nunnally.
"I called you all here because...I want to give you the choice of whether or not to leave the Fleet," said Lelouch, surprising everyone. "I have too much respect for all of you to allow you be potentially forced from your positions. Nor will I ask you to continue on when it seems our mission is already done or put you in a position that would be politically awkward. You've all served admirably and with the fame and honor you've received you would all no doubt flourish in the world no matter where you go. But if you choose to go forward, I cannot guarantee that it will be easy. Even if we've won against V.V and the Eden Elite the duty of the Atlas Fleet is to be the pillar of humanity. To keep the ever pressing doom from crushing mankind and ending our possibility. Going forward will not be easy. And we will face great challenges. Not merely from former Eden Elite or former nobles who supported V.V. From the political and military forces who feel threatened by our power. Many of which may well come from the nations we ourselves liberated. As was the curse of my uncle, that I would be betrayed by those whom I sought to save. If that is to be my fate then so be it but I will not force you to share it if you are not willing. And if you chose to go you not lose any of the respect I have for you. There is no shame in wanting to return home after the war if you feel you've given all you've had. But I have more still to give and my war, my mission, to ensure a peaceful world is one I can never walk away from. A constant duty I must always bear upon my shoulders like out titanic namesake. Even if I must bear it alone."
"Lelouch you don't...wait...you just had that speech broadcast," said Rivalz, detecting the technology of hidden cameras.
"To where?" asked Suzaku.
"To...everywhere," said Rivalz. "All Fleet channels and even the media."
"Because I want the whole world to know that Zero stands eternal," said Lelouch. "But I meant what I said, if you wish to leave the service, you do so with my blessing and without fear of disgrace."
"The hell we can," said Tamaki. "Even if we wanted to leave if everyone saw that they'd think we were all chicken."
"As amazing as it is the idiot is right," said Inoue. "We couldn't possibly face the rest of the world if we just abandoned its savior. Not that any of the Black Knights, the original sect were planning to."
"Nor were the White Samurai," said Suzaku, taking a stand. "We discussed these issues among ourselves before we got here. We, the Atlas Fleet, are a family and a family needs to be together. Now and forever."
"Now and forever," all others at the table said as they stood and saluted their Supreme Leader.
Lelouch smiled, both out of sincerity and because his plan had worked. Even within the great pyramid he could hear the cries of the Geass Order citizens as well as rank and file soldiers of the Fleet. And the rest of the world could hear them as well.
A week following the meeting with his allies Lelouch stood before his newest opponents, the United Federation of Nations. Now was the time to decide his place in the world once and for all. They met at a location of Lelouch's choice, Ashford Academy to let his journey end where it had began.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Lelouch began. "I won't waste your time and address one issue that a number of you have brought up in hushed whispers. So let me make it perfectly clear, the Atlas Fleet stands tall and stands united. So, I believe the only remaining issue we should have is the matter of my right to become Emperor of Britannia and Britannia's membership into the United Federation of Nations."
"Indeed Supreme Leader Zero or would you prefer Emperor Lelouch?" asked Kaguya.
"It does not matter Chairwoman Kaguya," said Lelouch. "Call me what you'd like, you've known me well enough. Now, if I recall the UFN charter decision to admit a new nation into the Federation requires two thirds vote and the nation with the greatest population would have most say in political decisions. Am I correct Chairwoman Kaguya?"
"You are," said Kaguya, somewhat annoyed by Lelouch's smug tone. "And you are no doubt aware that many nations in the UFN joined for the sole purpose of defeating Britannia."
"Of defeating V.V. you mean," said Lelouch. "Never forget that the first nation the Eden Elite conquered was Britannia herself. And now she is free and I will not allow my people to be bullied for the actions of the despot who already stripped them of their honor and dignity."
"Is that a threat boy?" yelled one uppity delegate.
"A promise," said Lelouch, his eyes narrowing on the little man who spoke up.
No other fool dared speak up, recalling that this was man who had held the power of a god and slew a true demon.
"Though, if I may correct you Chairwoman Kaguya I have not officially taken up the throne of Britannia," said Lelouch. "However...I do have a compromise that I believe shall settle issues that many people here must have regarding my apparent obligations as potential Emperor of Britannia and current Supreme Leader of the Atlas Fleet."
"And just what would that be?" asked Kaguya, legitimately curious.
Lelouch chuckle as he activated one of the new Geass abilities he had apparently gained. He had tested himself in the week prepping for this meeting and found that he could, like when he used the Atlas access multiple Geass abilities. However it appeared he could only use one at a time and not combine powers. Not that it mattered, he was more than satisfied with such an arrangement. It would make him a true wild card in any game he played against future enemies to the peace he sought to build.
The Geass he currently activated was one that allowed him a telekinetic control of the wind, the same one he inadvertently used to knock down Tamaki.
This little display certainly caught the attention of all the delegates. As well as the members of the Color Guard who watched from the Olympus II, the new flagship for the Atlas Fleet.
"My compromise is simple," said Lelouch. "I shall be...neither."
"What the hell is he up to now?" groaned Tamaki.
"Something that is going to simultaneously annoy us and make us proud," said Schneizel. "Not unlike when we were children eh Cornelia?"
"Indeed, oh how the headaches he'd give us," said Cornelia, recalling various antics in which Lelouch's cleverness annoyed her and made her happy. "Well no matter what, I'll follow Lelouch to hell itself if I have to."
"As we all will," said Suzaku.
"All for One and One for All," said Rivalz.
"Yeah but...hey guys has anyone seen Kallen anywhere?" asked Tamaki.
"Excuse me...eh...Zero, but what do you mean by you'll be neither?" asked Kaguya.
"I shall be neither because I already hold an office greater than either role," said Lelouch. "The people of the world have dubbed me the Black King of Justice, and as such that is the role I shall take. But I will not shirk my responsibilities owed to my people. I have already made the arrangements for someone to take the throne. Someone whom I trust and whom my people will accept and follow and who will keep the ideals of my father alive. My mother, Marianne Vi Britannia."
To the surprise of everyone viewing the meeting, Marianne and Bismark walked in.
"As such Chairwoman Kaguya the issue of Britannia's membership is a question for my mother and not for me," said Lelouch.
"And as such it should be noted that V.V's Reign of Terror has left the Homeland in such a state that we cannot handle an influx of people from the former Areas," said Marianne.
"A majority of which were cut out of the Empire by V.V. during his reign," said Lelouch. "So technically Britannia's population should result in the influence it would have in the UFN's policy making process relatively small. Even with a potential reunification with Euro Britannia, though that is an issue for them to decide. They've already declared their independence prior to the war and any decision to rejoin the Empire proper or remain independent should be their choice as well."
"All good points but I believe there is another issue," said Kaguya. "In appointing your mother Empress you are still in a position to have influence in the Empire are you not?"
"I would be in that position anyway," said Lelouch. "Because it is the will of the people. And the heart and soul of a nation is in its people."
"There is also the matter of the fact that the Empress is immortal," said Kaguya. "And a high ranking member of the Geass Order."
"The Geass Order has been dissolved," said Lelouch. "It was a relic of the past searching for a lost glory. As such is shall be reborn and Geass shall become a great sword of righteousness to keep the peace in this world. Integrated permanently with the Atlas Fleet as...the Atlas Order Geass."
"Atlas Order Geass?" said Nunnally.
"We're going to have to change our uniforms again aren't we?" asked Rivalz.
"The Atlas Order Geass will not be a nomadic force in this world," said Lelouch. "Rather, with the approval of the UFN, we shall set up bases in various key parts of the world for various sects to stand as pillars of society. And through our efforts the power of Geass shall be seen as a power that can be used for good even if there have been, and yet still might be those who would use it for the sake of conquest and cruelty."
"A fine plan and all but there is also the issue of your mother's immortality," said Kaguya.
"A beloved ruler who fully embraces the ideals of another beloved ruler who had been credited as a sage and in some cases a saint by many on the world stage? Who is also immune to assassination in a time of fragile peace?" said Lelouch. "It is a stability that is truly rare in this unstable world wouldn't you say?"
Lelouch's logic seemed to be appealing to numerous members of the UFN.
"As for my position as Supreme Leader of the Atlas Order Geass," said Lelouch, using the new title of his organization. "If I may cheat there will be a title of Supreme Leader, but who holds the title will be decided by a vote from within the ranks."
"A vote you would win," said Kaguya.
"This time," said Lelouch. "The title of Supreme Leader should go to the one in the Force whom they believe is the best qualified to lead them. For now that appears to be me but there can be any other of the fine people of the Color Guard."
"And if you were ever voted out of the title of Supreme Leader?" asked Kaguya.
"It wouldn't stop me from doing what I am supposed to," said Lelouch. "It doesn't matter what title I bear, Emperor Lelouch, Supreme Leader Zero, Black King of Justice, my duty is clear. I will uphold civilization and keep back those who would destroy it. Now and forever."
Lelouch descended and began to take his leave, stopping only to give his mother the Imperial Sword. No one spoke up against Lelouch as he simply decided to leave. Instead they all silently acknowledged that no matter what they did on that day Lelouch would have the final word. That on that day, no one was greater than Zero.
Lelouch avoided the paparazzi thanks to a few secret passages he had been sure to develop in the school during his time hiding there. They had also come in handy when avoiding Milly's antics.
His various passage ways led him to a secret garage where he had housed the old mobile base the Black Knights had used. There Jeremiah and Sayoko were waiting.
"Is everything prepared?" he asked.
"Yes master," said Sayoko.
"We depart on your leave my lord," said Jeremiah.
"Excellent, I'll buzz you when we're ready," said Lelouch.
He entered the base, which had been converted to a more comfortable arrangement. Walking up to the sleeping quarters Lelouch found Kallen lying under the bed, cover drawn over her breasts. Lelouch then began to remove the garb of Zero. Because for a considerable time in the future he would not be Zero, the Black King of Justice. He would simply be Kallen's as they enjoyed their time together exploring this new world before the dregs of duty brought them back.
As soon as he was stripped he began to crawl into bed only for Kallen to rather aggressively pull him in and motion herself on top.
"Queen takes King," she whispered. "Checkmate."
Julius awoke in a dark cell, trying to recall what had happened to him. The memories came flooding back about how his brother had used him and then banished him. But banished him to where?
He heard the sounds of footsteps approaching and he quickly rose to his feet, only then noticing the chains. He looked back to the cell door and saw the green haired witch standing at the bars. She moved slightly, revealing a truly bizarre figure seated at a desk. A troll of a man with a rather long nose.
"Welcome to the Velvet Room, most extraordinary young man," he said in a high voice.
"Let the game begin," said the witch.
Author's Note: Thus the Crusade comes to a close. Thanks to everyone who followed along for almost two years. And if the last bit was any indication the sequel is indeed going to have a lot of influence from Persona 5. I've already been developing the outline for the story and should have the first chapter up soon. There will also be influence from Re;surrection but with different circumstances.
Anyway hope this conclusion comes as satisfactory to all my readers and that you'll follow along for the next story. Also I have been toying around with the idea of a Code Geass/DC Universe story but might not get to that soon since I'll be working more on the sequel to this story. Anyway, thank you all again, good day, and stay safe out there.
