Chapter One PREVIEW

POV: third, limited, Yang Xiao Long, 9 cycles of age

"You feel that shimmy?" her father asked. She nodded. "It's your hind legs trying to outrun your front," he said. This confused Yang.

"What do I do?" she wondered, genuinely curious; hoping to alter the fact; desiring to adjust whatever complication afflicted it as the rush of air flushed her hair wildly when he took an abrupt turn.

"You stop steering and you start driving," he answered.

A hard left again, the two wheels grinding the grass and decaying leaves into mulch before the wheels regained traction, bringing it forward before they crashed into a thick tree.

"This ain't no dead piece of metal," he said to her gently and softly, but loud enough for her to hear over the rushing gale over their ears. "You can hear her talking to you...listen..."

She shut her eyes, struggling to hear over the rush, and all silenced except for the voice of the motor, dancing beneath her in a code; a language; a conversation; a presentation; a demonstration. She couldn't understand it now. Her father could; her mother could; and her mom could.

Over all of that, the tough to hear voice; that troubled listening, her father spoke up again. "They say that your mother drove the final lap of the 15th Vac Cup with her eyes closed," he said.

In disbelief, Yang opened her eyes and lost her concentration, shouting, "No way!"

"No?" her father chuckled, causing her to frown. He took a couple moments to drift, narrowly missing more wooden obstacles. "Maybe you just can't hear it, then," he teased, and she knew he was grinning at her, all amused. And he knew the perfect thing she hated. "Best to get back to the books."

Yang, one whose only rival had been both soft- and hardcover book, said, "No, I hear it!"

Taiyang, loving the confidence, said, "Ohoh, is that so, Branwen Junior?" Yang ground her teeth at the jab, but enjoyed the ride.
