I am not an expert in biology, so if the science is wrong, I'm sorry.
Kara and Lena watched the explosion from the street. Kara used her x-ray vision to scan the building, to make sure no one was in danger. It appeared that other than some damage to the hallway, floor and ceiling, none of the other apartments were affected by the bomb.
Kara moved forward, with the intention of going back to what was left of her apartment. She wanted to see if there was anything left of the bomb. She wanted proof that this was Lex and Cadmus.
Lena grabbed Kara's arm. "What are you doing?" she questioned.
"I want to check the wreckage," Kara told her.
"There could be kryptonite," Lena pointed out. "Call the DEO. They can check your apartment." Kara looked torn between calling the DEO and going to her apartment. Lena tightened her grip on Kara's arm. She could see Kara was still wanting to go and knew Kara wouldn't go if there was a risk of Lena getting hurt. "Call Alex."
Kara removed her phone from her pocket and dialed Alex's number. "Kara, what's wrong?"
"There was an explosion at my apartment," Kara said.
Alex didn't give her a chance to say anything else. "Are you okay? Is Lena okay?"
"We're both fine," Kara assured her. "I need the DEO here though. It's most likely Cadmus and if there's kryptonite I can't go inside."
Kara listened as Alex shouted at Vazquez to get a team together. "Go back to Lena's," Alex told her sister. "I'll stop by when we're done for a report."
"Okay," Kara agreed with a sigh. "Stay safe."
Kara led Lena back to her car. She was acting as a shield for Lena. If Cadmus blew up her apartment in the attempt to kill her or Lena, they failed. But she wouldn't put it past them to try again.
They got into the car and Lena sped away, ignoring the sirens from the police cars that we headed to the apartment complex.
"Are you okay Kara?" Lena asked concerned.
Kara glanced at Lena. "I'm fine," she said. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Your apartment was just blown up," Lena reminded her. "Which means all of your possessions were destroyed too."
Kara's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't considered that. "Oh," she said.
"You didn't realize that?" Lena questioned.
"No," Kara admitted. "The possessions don't matter. My suits are at your penthouse and that's really all that matters."
Lena put her blinker on for the parking garage before quickly changing her mind. She ignored the honks, as she drove off to her new destination: Big Belly Burger.
"Where are we going?" Kara asked when she noticed the abrupt change in direction.,
"We are getting food," Lena told her. "Then, we are going home and ordering you new clothes and whatever else you want."
"Lena," Kara started.
Lena shook her head. "Don't argue with me Kara," she said firmly. "My family is targeting you and I have the money to buy you whatever you want."
She pulled into the parking lot. "Okay," Kara agreed.
Lena pulled into the drive-through. "How many burgers do you want?" Lena asked her.
Kara always had a minimum of two burgers. But sometimes she would have three, or even four burgers, depending on how much energy she had spent. "Three," she decided. They hadn't eaten before they left so she was a bit hungry.
Lena quickly ordered their food, two combos and two extra burgers, before pulling forward so she could pay. It didn't take long before they had the food and drinks. Lena drove back to the penthouse.
Kara carried the food inside while Lena carried their drinks. Once they were safe inside, Kara dumped the bags on the table before digging through the cabinets for plates. She sat the plates on the counter while Lena started unpacking the bags. They sat down a few minutes later to eat.
"Is there anything you want, or need, that I don't have here?" Lena questioned. Most of their shopping would be centered around clothing but this was now Kara's home. Lena wanted to make sure Kara had everything she could possibly want, or need.
Kara sat her half-eaten burger down. "My laptop was in my apartment. If it didn't survive the blast, I'll need a new one for work."
Lena nodded and made a mental note to add a laptop to the list. She was going to buy Kara a new laptop even if the old one survived. This way she could have a work laptop and a home laptop. Kara would most likely protest, saying it was unnecessary, which it definitely was, but Lena planned on it anyway. It never hurt to have an extra laptop. Lena had several, just in case.
"What are you planning?" Kara asked after several minutes of silence.
"Shopping," Lena answered honestly.
Kara sighed. She knew when she agreed to move in with Lena, she was going to have to adjust to having Lena's money available. But she didn't realize it was going to start so soon…with her apartment exploding.
"Can you try not to pick out the most expensive stuff you can find?" Kara requested, knowing she couldn't stop Lena from spending the money.
"We can shop together," Lena suggested. "That way you can pick out what you want."
They quickly finished their food and made their way over to the couch. Lena logged onto her laptop while Kara put a cooking show on for background noise. Lena pulled open the website for the Apple store, she knew Kara's other computer was a Mac, and handed the computer to Kara.
Kara spent an hour scrolling through computers while Lena worked on answering some emails, mostly from Sam. Finally, Kara narrowed it down to two computers. One was significantly more expensive than the other, not that it mattered to Lena, but Kara wasn't sure which to pick. She handed the computer back to Lena. "Honest opinion," Kara said. "Which one would be better?"
Lena studied the compared selections. Normally she would pick the most expensive option because in her mind, more expensive was better, but she knew that wasn't what Kara was asking. If the most expensive option was the best option then it would be fine.
"Do you plan on doing anything on this computer other than work?" Lena questioned.
Kara shrugged. "I don't know. I was thinking maybe store pictures," Kara answered.
"Get this one," Lena said pointing to the cheaper laptop. "I'll buy a flash drive so you can store photos."
"Okay," Kara agreed.
Lena added it to the cart along with the largest capacity flash drive she could find. She added a few extra accessories, a wireless mouse and carrying case among them before paying. According to the website, everything would be delivered within the week.
Lena pulled up the website for the clothing shop she knew Kara loved. She handed the laptop back and went back to her emails.
For the next hour they silently worked. Kara shopped while Lena worked. There wasn't a whole lot that required her attention and she was grateful for that. The company was in good hands with Sam in charge. Sam got more confident with each passing day and asked for advice less and less.
A knock at the door startled them out of their work. Kara x-rayed the door and got up when she saw it was just Alex. "Alex," Kara greeted when she pulled the door open.
"How are you guys?" Alex asked looking between her sister and Lena. She stepped inside the apartment.
"We're fine Alex. I noticed the bomb when I opened the front door. We were outside before it went off," Kara told her.
"We examined your apartment," Alex said. Kara led her to the kitchen. She grabbed a beer from the fridge, twisted the top off and handed it to her sister. "Thanks for this." She took a long sip. "Not much survived the explosion. The DEO will gather anything left. Also," Alex hesitated. "There was no sign of Kryptonite in your apartment."
Kara frowned. "That doesn't make any sense. Why blow up my apartment if…" she trailed of when she saw Lena. "Either they don't know who I am or Lena was the target."
"It does look like that," Alex said honestly.
Lena watched Kara. She could practically feel how upset her girlfriend was. There was definitely some anger there but Lena knew the root of the issue: fear.
Lena was pretty used to death threats, by Lex and by others. Because of that she wasn't as bothered by them as she probably should be. She was starting to realize that may be a mistake and causing extra stress to Kara.
Kara ran from the room using her superspeed. She reappeared seconds later in her suit before taking off through the open balcony.
Lena and Alex watched her go. There was nothing either could do to stop her. Though it was unlikely they would want to at this point.
"She needs to let off some steam," Alex said, though Lena wasn't sure if she was trying to reassure Lena, or herself.
"She shouldn't be out there alone," Lena muttered. "If Cadmus finds her…"
"She can take care of herself," Alex said. "It's you we need to worry about."
Lena shrugged. She went to the kitchen and pulled a bottle of scotch out. It didn't matter that it was barely the afternoon. It was already a long day and she needed a drink. She poured herself a shot and downed it before grabbing another glass and pouring more for herself and Alex.
"The Luthor's really did a number on you," Alex said taking the offered drink.
Lena raised an eyebrow at her. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"You're ready to kill your own family to protect Kara," Alex started. "But when it comes to your own safety, you don't care." Alex held up her hand to stop Lena's protests. "Don't try to deny it. I've seen it. You have little value for your own life."
Lena looked away from Alex. "Kara's life matters more," she said softly. "If I die, there's a few that will mourn me, but if Kara dies, the whole world would mourn her."
Alex sat her glass on the counter. She really hoped Kara couldn't hear this conversation. "Lena, there's plenty that would mourn you if you die." She walked over to Lena's side and touched her shoulder.
Lena turned around, tears falling down her cheeks. "Lex has wanted me dead my entire adult life. It came to the point where I expected to die. I'm grateful to be alive and I don't want to die but…"
"You don't expect to live through this," Alex finished. She wrapped her arms around Lena. "I'll do everything in my power to make sure you survive this. But you cannot give up. Promise me you will not give up."
Lena pulled away and wiped away the tears. "I'm not going to give up," she promised.
"Good," Alex said pleased.
"Now drink up," Lena instructed. "I don't pull out my good scotch for just anyone."
Alex snorted. She walked back to the other side of the counter and grabbed the glass. She took a sip and was surprised by how smooth it was. She wasn't much for scotch as she preferred shots of tequila.
"Do you think this birthday party is a good idea?" Lena questioned.
Alex looked up from her half empty glass. "You already planned it out," Alex reminded her. "You can't cancel it now." She downed the rest of the alcohol. "What's going on?"
Lena downed the rest of her own drink. "I'm worried my mother will see this as an opportunity to get Kara and myself."
Alex shook her head. "Unless they have surveillance on us, and know about Kara, there's no way they would know to target the party." Alex paled. "Do you think they know?"
"I don't know," Lena admitted. "It's something I've been thinking about though. Let's assume they don't know. Why target Kara's apartment?"
"They know you and Kara are together," Alex replied. "Maybe they didn't care about collateral in their attempt to get to you. Or they hoped to kill Kara in an attempt to hurt you."
Lena sighed. "That doesn't help in the slightest," she muttered. "Either they know about Kara, or Kara is a target as a human. I don't like either option."
"We can only hope they're trying to target Kara thinking she is a human," Alex said. "It means they won't be able to hurt her."
"Unless they can synthesize Kryptonite," Lena said. "As far as we know, Project Exodus is their endgame."
Alex shook her head. "I don't think that's their endgame," she disagreed. "I agree that it is definitely a goal, especially for Lex. He hates Clark more than anything and I can see him getting rid of Supergirl but introducing Kryptonite to the atmosphere will only target Kryptonians. What about the other aliens? Cadmus is against all aliens. They have to be planning something else."
Lena ran her hand through her hair. "I don't know about that," she admitted. "There's no one way to kill every single alien." She paused. She sat her now empty cup down and went back to the living room where her laptop was.
"Lena what," Alex started.
Lena held up a hand to stop her and went back to her typing. "Alien DNA, what do we know about it?" Lena asked.
Alex frowned. "I'm not sure what you're getting at. I haven't studied many aliens, other than Kara."
Lena nodded in understanding. "Lex captured and studied aliens before he was arrested. I haven't looked into his files until now. It seems every alien has a variation in their chromosomes."
"As in more chromosomes, or less?" Alex asked. Alex shook her head. "That doesn't make sense. Kara has the same chromosomes as a human."
"They have the same number of chromosomes," Lena confirmed. "The first chromosome is the one that essentially makes us human. Lex's research suggests there is some type of mutation on the first chromosome in aliens."
Lena handed over her computer to allow Alex to see the research. Alex scanned the screen. It looked solid but she wasn't sure she trusted anything that came from Lex Luthor. "You think this is real?"
"Lex isn't stupid," Lena said. "But he's also not an expert in biology. I would like to conduct my own research."
"We have plenty of samples in the DEO," Alex started.
Lena shook her head. "I want permission from whoever's blood I'm testing," Lena said firmly. She knew most aliens wouldn't be happy with the thought of a Luthor having access to their blood, especially if Lena was correct about Lex's plan to kill all aliens.
Alex handed the computer back so she could send a text to J'onn. "I can only think of three aliens that would happily give a sample."
Lena sighed. Three samples were nowhere near enough but it would have to do for now. Multiple species would be even better but Lena wouldn't get her hopes up.
"So, even if it's true that all aliens have a mutation on their first chromosome, what does that have to do with Lex's plan?" Alex questioned. She hadn't read ahead in the research.
"The research is incomplete," Lena said. "But his plan was to target that mutation. He seems to think every alien has the same basic mutation and if he could figure out a way to only target those with the mutation…"
"Then he could eradicate all aliens on Earth," Alex finished.
"I need a DEO laptop," Lena said suddenly. "Something that can't be traced back to me and more importantly, something not connected to L-Corp."
"We can do that," Alex said slowly. "But why?"
"I'm wiping my computer and every L-Corp computer of everything connected to Lex and his plans," Lena declared. "I want to save the information on secure computer first, so I can use it, but I can't risk him getting this information."
"I'll get Winn started on it," Alex said taking out her phone. "We can head to the DEO as soon as you're ready."
The slider opened and Alex reached for her gun. Before she could remove it from the holster, Kara was by Lena's side, her arms wrapped tightly around her.
"I'm sorry," Kara muttered into Lena's ear. "I'm sorry."
Lena ran her hand through Kara's hair. "It's okay darling," she said softly. Lena pulled away from Kara so she could gently kiss her. "Do you feel better?" she asked.
Kara shrugged. "Not really," Kara admitted. "I stopped a bank robbery and helped out at a car accident but all I really wanted was to be back here with you."
Alex cleared her throat. "I'm going to head back to the DEO," she announced, though she wasn't sure if her sister or Lena even cared. "Lena, come on by later. I'll have Winn work on the computer."
"I'll be there," Lena promised.
"Why are you going to the DEO?" Kara asked with a frown.
"I have all of Lex's research on my laptop. I want something a little more secure before I delete everything. That way Lex can't try to take his research back." Lena hesitated. "I don't want to upset you."
"No, I need to know this," Kara said firmly.
"Kara, if I do this, it's very likely Lex will try even harder to get to me," Lena warned her. "There were only three people that have access to this kind of information and I'm one of the few capable of creating these devices."
Kara didn't react as badly as Lena expected. Lena could feel Kara tense up but if she hadn't been touching the hero she wouldn't have noticed something was off.
"Is this what you want?" Kara questioned.
"I won't let Lex hurt you or any other alien," Lena said. "Besides, Lex already wants me. Why not piss him off more?" Lena joked.
Kara glared at her. She did not find it funny in the slightest. "I won't stop you," Kara said with a sigh. "I couldn't stop you even if I wanted to. Just promise me if anything happens, you'll use this." Kara gently grabbed Lena's wrist where the bracelet Clark gave Lena rested.
Lena put her free hand over Kara's. "I promise Kara," she said softly.
Kara let go of her wrist. "Would you like a ride to the DEO?" she asked.
Lena moved into Kara's open arms. She wrapped her arms around Kara's neck. "I still hate flying," she muttered. Kara laughed as they flew to the DEO.
