Tonks raced through the castle, her heart hammering in her chest. She hadn't fully recovered yet from the birth, and her lungs were burning by the time she made it to the first floor of the castle, but she didn't let it slow her down. She'd gone on autopilot. There were bigger threats to her survival than her own exhaustion.
She caught sight of Remus and had to fight against the urge to call his name. Somewhere down another corridor, she heard a blast. There was no telling where the Death Eaters were. He turned and spotted her before she'd reached him, his face stricken. Tonks flew into his arms, causing him to stumble.
"Tonks?" he said in disbelief. "What are you doing here? Where's Teddy?"
"With Mum," Tonks muttered into his shoulder, her grip still tight on him. They weren't safe, but she couldn't help herself. "I couldn't stay away. I had to know…"
She pulled away far enough to look at his face. He was terrified, like they all were, but there was love there. No matter what danger they were in, Tonks felt easier now that they were holding each other.
"You shouldn't have come," Remus said, sounding tired as opposed to angry. He looked down at her as if searching for signs of injury. "You're not fully well yet."
"I'm fine," Tonks said. At the very least, she would push past it. She could worry about the consequences later, once they were all safe. Her fingers clenched onto Remus' robes. "I'm here to fight. With you."
A flash of hesitation crossed Remus' eyes before he nodded. They both knew there was no arguing. They pulled apart, just as a Death Eater rounded the corner.
