Christmas: Barracks Two

Christmas Eve, a snow storm raging

Does not stop one man engaging

Four in current scheme he's staging;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Plans discussed by match-lit candle;

Tasks assigned, each step they'll handle.

Room ice cold...a ruddy scandal!

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Out from tree stump, men are creeping

Softly, 'twixt each searchlight keeping

Watch for fliers; should be sleeping;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Huddled group of fliers mourning

All they've lost that night, no warning;

Horror of their plight is dawning:

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Future viewed with apprehension,

Voices near, fast rising tension;

Likely hostile intervention...

Christmas; Barracks Two.

~0~

Whispered words dispel suspicion;

Friends not foe, stunned recognition;

Against all odds, a rescue mission;

Christmas; Barracks Two.

~0~

Sanctuary as dawn is breaking;

Rescuers, all sleep forsaking,

Deem the fearful risks worth taking;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Grey light filters, roll call's waiting;

Meagre warmth evaporating;

Gloom expressed in Sergeant baiting;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

All lined up, while snow's still falling;

Curses mix with number calling;

Language used is quite appalling;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Back inside, attempts at cheering

Fellow inmates, gifts appearing;

Makeshift, humble, sparse, endearing;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Cards spread out, face up, revealing;

Winning hand, blue sleeves concealing

More than just his arms, when dealing.

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Pot on stove top; something's cooking;

Sampling done while no one's looking;

Spoon as weapon; bunk mate ducking.

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Thoughts of years of war; depressing;

Dwelling on such things, distressing;

Hard to find and count each blessing;

Christmas; Barracks Two.

~0~

Misery dispelled by chatter;

Tall tales help dark thoughts to scatter;

Close companions truly matter;

Christmas; Barracks Two.

~0~

No solemn chants, no sleigh bells ringing,

No festive tree, no wise men bringing

Gold, no choirs of angels singing;

Christmas: Barracks Two.

~0~

Prisoners more than just surviving;

Fliers saved, and hope reviving;

Peace on Earth is worth such striving;

Christmas: Barracks Two.
