Author's Preface

Hello! Fiction Affliction, here. Welcome to "Not My Brother", my first Hunger Games fan fiction. This story will cover the events of the 76th Hunger Games, and that in itself means my story will depart from the canon vastly. Allow me to explain. In my timeline for this story, Katniss and Peeta, both died during the 74th Annual Hunger Games, killed by Cato who went on to become victor. The death of Katniss Everdeen was a huge setback to the rebellion, who were watching the young woman's progress with earnestness. Her death caused President Alma Coin and Plutarch Heavensbee to put their plans on hold and reorganize. Cato went on to volunteer for the 75th Games, the Quarter Quell. The young man made it to the final two before being slain by Finnick Odair, who became Victor. The escape from the arena never happened because without Katniss, the rebellion never got that spark it needed to gain traction. Yet.

Sometime in between the conclusion of the 75th Games and the start of the Victor's Tour, President Coriolanus Snow mysteriously died in his sleep, the official cause of death was a brain aneurysm, but many within the Capitol and Districts suspect foul play, probably poison. In the subsequent Panem Presidential Election, (only capitol citizens are eligible to vote) Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane was chosen to replace Snow. Shortly thereafter, Plutarch Havensbee mysteriously disappeared. President Crane appointed his closest friend (and secret lover) Armitage Cain as Head Gamemaker, Crane also re-established the Panem Vice-Presidency and appointed trusted friend Garrick Vane to the position as well as Director General of the Intelligence Bureau, making him a very powerful figure in Seneca's Government. While these figures will play an important background role, thay will not be the focus of our story.

That honor goes to Kellan, Cato's younger brother, who was 14 when his brother volunteered as tribute the first time. Now 16, Kellan will volunteer for the 76th Games as District 2's male tribute, though his motives for doing so are unclear. His course in the games as well as his unlikely alliance with a certain tribute from District 12, will be the main focus of our story.

I hope you enjoy the story!
