Chapter 1: Color Me Barney

Another long school week had just ended at the Peanuts Gang school, and Peppermint Patty was on the playground, looking at her watch, clearly waiting for somebody. She then smiled as she spotted Snoopy and Woodstock enter the schoolyard. "Hey!" Snoopy happily exclaimed as he ran to hug Peppermint Patty.

"Hiya Snoop! Hi Woodstock!" Peppermint Patty said. "It's really great to see you both again. Speaking of which, have you two seen Marcie?" Snoopy looked at Woodstock, who just shrugged. Snoopy then shrugged as well. "Well, she was supposed to bring my suitcase, and she's bringing Hannah and Heather with her. Oh, well. Let's go see what the others are doing."

She, Snoopy, and Woodstock then entered the classroom where Charlie Brown, Linus, Pigpen, Robert, Jeff, Sally, Patty Swanson, Violet, and Kristen were all dressed in smocks, getting ready to finger paint. "Hiya gang! What's happening?" Peppermint Patty asked.

"Oh, hi Peppermint Patty. We're about to finger paint." Charlie Brown smiled. "Would you and Snoopy like to join us?"

"Oh boy, would we!" Peppermint Patty smiled as Snoopy nodded in agreement.

"Great! Grab a smock and come sit down with us." Kristen said. Peppermint Patty and Snoopy then dressed up in smocks and sat down with their friends. They then began to squeeze the paint on their pieces of paper.

"This is going to be fun." Robert smiled.

"It's really easy to make lots of colors when you finger paint." Violet smiled.

"I love to finger paint!" Pigpen said happily.

"Me too." Kristen said. "Green is just the color me and Peppermint Patty need."

"What are you gonna paint?" Sally asked Peppermint Patty.

"Well, I'm gonna start with some green grass and see where it goes from there." Peppermint Patty said. "What about you, Chuck?"

"Well, I'm actually gonna paint in a picture of Heather that I already drew." Charlie Brown said with a blush and smile, making Sally, Violet, and Patty Swanson laugh. "What? She has beautiful hair! How can I not?"

Peppermint Patty just growled to herself, feeling jealous as Snoopy mixed in some red and blue paint to create purple. "What are you gonna paint, Jeff?" Linus asked.

"I'm not quite sure yet." Jeff answered. "Can I see what you're painting, Snoopy?"

Snoopy then held up his finger as a way to say, 'just a moment'. "He says he'll show it to you soon." Charlie Brown said before realizing that he didn't have any red paint. "Uh Jeff, can you please hand me some red paint for Heather's hair?"

"Sure Charlie Brown." Jeff smiled as he did just that. Sally then dipped her fingers into the finger paint with Violet, Patty Swanson, and Jeff.

"This is kind of icky..." Sally said.

"...and gooey..." Patty Swanson continued.

"...and fun!" Jeff smiled as Snoopy, the Peanuts Gang, and Barney's friends began their pictures with the messy finger paint.

Icky, squishy, gooey, ooey

Linus and Pigpen:

"Blech!" Sally smiled and giggled as she continued to paint.

Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

Icky, squishy, gooey, ooey

Kristen and Peppermint Patty:

Spaghetti and pudding, me oh my

Just the right stuff for a goopy pie

Violet and Patty Swanson:

Mud puddles still our number one

We're having some squishy, icky, gooey fun!

"Blech!" Snoopy muttered, then giggled as he finished his picture.

Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

Finally, all their pictures were finished and they smiled as they showed them off. "How's this gang?!" Peppermint Patty smiled. "24 cows standing in a pasture! Each one rendered, in explicit detail!"

"Nice one, Peppermint Patty." Jeff said, before showing off his picture. "I made one of my cat."

"We just painted the both of us making mud pies!" Violet said as she and Patty Swanson showed off their pictures.

"Can we see your picture, Charlie Brown?" Robert asked.

"Sure." Charlie Brown smiled as he showed off his picture of Heather, complete with her beautiful, red hair.

"Wow Charlie Brown. You drew and painted an amazing portrait of Heather! She's sure to love it!" Linus smiled.

"Thanks Linus." Charlie Brown said. Sally then showed off her picture.

"This is a picture I painted of a cow in a meadow, chasing mice." Sally smiled as the others giggled.

"Sally, cows don't chase mice." Jeff snickered, to which Sally glared at him.

"What do you mean cows don't chase mice?" Sally asked. Kristen then showed off her picture.

"What do you think of my tree?" Kristen asked.

"Well, it's a very green tree. Almost as green as your and Peppermint Patty's hands!" Pigpen laughed. Snoopy's ears then went up as he knew he could use some green for his picture. He then smiled as his picture was finished. "What did you paint, Snoopy?"

Snoopy then showed off his painting and the kids' eyes went wide as they all recognized that shape. It was a picture of Barney. "Hey, that looks like-" Peppermint Patty figured out before the Barney doll, sitting near the sink, came to life.

"BARNEY!" The kids all exclaimed.

"Gangway! Here comes Pigpen!" Pigpen exclaimed as he tackled the purple dinosaur to the ground before realizing two things: he was built for football and his hands and clothes were covered in paint. "Whoops. Sorry, Barney."

"Pigpen, you're a mess!" Violet exclaimed. "Look at you! Filthy face, hands, overalls and hair!"

"I have clean thoughts." Pigpen said. "But the rest of me is a bit grubby."

"A bit?" Violet groaned.

"I'll help you back up." Charlie Brown said as he washed and dried his hands. "There we go, Barney."

"Thanks, Charlie Brown." Barney replied.

"AND HERE WE COME!" the rest of the kids exclaimed, ready to hug him.

"WAIT!" Linus shouted. "We're a little messy."

"Because we've been finger painting." Kristen said.

"And it was real fun!" Peppermint Patty exclaimed.

"I see." Barney chuckled.

"Look at our pictures." Robert suggested as they all held up their pictures. "Guess who it is."

"Well…let's see…lots of purple and a little green-two of the prettiest colors I've ever seen." Barney said. "Who could it be? I think it looks a lot like me."

"That's right, Barney. Snoopy painted a picture of you." Robert smiled.

"Thank you, Snoopy. I think it's stupendous!"

"I painted Heather." Charlie Brown smiled.

"And we're all out of red paint now." Violet groaned.

"I thought she looked familiar." Barney joked.

"Violet and I painted ourselves with mud pies." Patty Swanson smiled.

"We sure did." Violet said.

"Looks like fun." Barney smiled.

"Mine's a cow chasing a mouse." Sally said.

"The mouse sure looks scared." Barney stated.

"I know, but we really should get cleaned up." Peppermint Patty said. "Marcie and Heather should be here soon-so will Hannah. I wanna look squeaky clean."

"Yeah. We all look filthy." Violet exclaimed.

"Well then, step right up to the sink." Barney suggested. "The perfect way to wash your hands."

"My mom says that's important to keep clean because it keeps me healthy." Kristen stated.

"Hey, that's right, Kristen." Patty Swanson said.

"Indeed. Washing your hands before you eat, after you use the bathroom, finger painting, making mud pies or playing in general helps keep germs away." Barney said.

"Ugh!" Pigpen huffed. "The paint's coming off, but not the dirt on my hands."

"Try rubbing harder." Jeff suggested.

"I am!" Pigpen exclaimed. "Can someone pass more soap please?"

"Okay." Kristen replied as she passed the soap to him.

"Thanks."

"Pigpen getting clean…is the world ending?" joked Violet.

"Maybe. This water feels really warm." Patty Swanson said. "Almost like a spa."

"Don't forget to use some soap, Robert." Pigpen explained.

"The soap makes LOTS of bubbles!" Sally giggled.

"It does. AND lots of bubbly suds." Linus smiled.

"It sure does." Barney smiled. "To keep healthy and clean, you've got to scrub, scrub, scrub with those suds, suds, suds!"

From the piano, Miss Etta and Scooter were watching, well, Scooter was singing off key and Miss Etta was listening. "I didn't know being clean could be so much fun, Miss Etta. YEAH!" the bubbly squirrel said.

"Well, Scooter, as my great aunt Myrtle used to say, 'You don't want to have too much fun. Yeah'." Miss Etta recited as Scooter sighed.

"Grrr!" This bag weighs a ton! A whole ton!" a voice exclaimed.

"What was that?" Linus asked.

"Sounds like it came from outside." Barney said.

"Last one there's a dirty egg!" Violet exclaimed.

"Oh yeah?!" everyone asked as they all raced outside.

"About time, slowpoke." Peppermint Patty shook her head as they all saw Heather, Hannah and an exhausted Marcie walk towards them.

"Hi everyone." Heather greeted.

"Hi Barney." Hannah waved.

"Hi, Sir." Marcie blushed, dropping the suitcase and hiding something behind her back.

"Hi girls." Sally waved back.

"Hi sweetie." Charlie Brown flirted.

"Sweetie?" Sally shuddered.

"What's with the suitcases? Are you three moving away?" Linus asked, his hair sticking up at the thought.

"What?!" everyone else gasped.

"No. I hope not." Heather said with a reassuring smile.

"Are you going on a trip?" asked Robert.

"Kind of." Hannah denied.

"Sir, next time, pack a lighter load." Marcie huffed, collapsing on the ground.

"Sorry, kid." Peppermint Patty blushed, helping her up on her shoulders.

"What's going on?" asked Linus.

"Me, Heather and Peppermint Patty are going on a sleepover party." Hannah said.

"Oh boy! A sleepover's lots of fun!" Barney cheered.

"It sure is! I love sleepovers!" Pigpen exclaimed happily as dust clouds formed around him, making everyone cough.

"It really is." Hannah stated, coughing a little.

"Especially at your aunt Paula's house!" Peppermint Patty added.

"She gave me this suitcase to carry my things in when the girls and I sleep over." Hannah added as she, Heather and Peppermint Patty unzipped their suitcases.

"We all packed combs, brushes and some shampoo." Heather said.

"So you can wash your hair?" asked Kristen.

"Uh huh." Heather said. "I love keeping my hair clean and tangle-free."

"My aunt Paula and I have a lot of fun pretending we're getting our hair done." Hannah added. "We're all bringing toothbrushes and toothpaste too."

"I always brush my teeth before I go to bed." Robert smiled.

"So does Snoopy." Charlie Brown smiled.

"Me too, Robert. My aunt says it's important to brush your teeth twice a day, so they're clean and healthy." Hannah smiled.

"And for a beautiful smile." Barney added.

"And we all brought along pajamas and slippers!" Peppermint Patty exclaimed, tossing off her sandals and putting on her slippers. "Mine have dog ears on them."

"Did you bring anything else?" Linus asked the three.

"Of course." The three said in unison.

"My favorite doll, Anna." Hannah began.

"My teddy bears Caramel and Velvet." Heather added.

"And, of course, Cupca-where'd she go?" Peppermint Patty realized.

"This?" Marcie asked, holding up a filthy version of Cupcake. "I tripped in the mud getting here…"

"Good grief." Peppermint Patty sighed. "Can we fix her?"

"We can give her a bath." Linus suggested.

"And your blanket can be the towel." Violet smiled.

"NO!" shouted Linus.

"It's fine." Peppermint Patty said. "I'll clean her at Paula's house. But why is my suitcase so heavy, Big Purple?" Peppermint Patty huffed, placing Cupcake beside her.

"Look inside." Marcie suggested with a giggle.

"Okay…" Patty shrugged, looking inside the suitcase, only to see it filled with books. "MARCIE!"

"I thought you guys could do some reading at Paula's house." Marcie giggled with a small yawn.

"Thanks." Heather smiled.

"It looks like you packed everything you need for a good night's sleep." Barney commented.

"Well, there is one more thing my aunt Paula does for me before I go to sleep." Hannah smiled.

"What's that?" Jeff asked.

"She sings my favorite bedtime song." Hannah smiled.

"Ours too." Heather and Peppermint Patty agreed.

"Sounds nice." Marcie smiled with a yawn before conking out on her friend.

"It is." Heather smiled.

"I love that lullaby." Barney smiled.

"So, what exactly do you do at a sleepover party?" Jeff asked. "Get ready for bed and sleep?"

Heather giggled. "Well, not before we have some fun."

"We watch lots of silly old movies." Peppermint Patty smiled. "And she makes lots and lots of popcorn to eat!"

"I love popcorn." Kristen smiled.

"Me too." Robert chimed in.

"Me three." Sally smiled.

"Same!" Pigpen giggled.

"You'd REALLY like this popcorn. Hannah's aunt sprinkles it with yummy toppings. I tried to get Marcie to try it once, for fun, she used coconut shavings." Peppermint Patty shuddered.

"Yum." Barney smiled. "That sounds delicious!"

"I could eat some popcorn right now!" Jeff exclaimed.

"I could eat it all!" Sally smiled. "I wish we were at Paula's right now!"

"That's a great idea! Barney, let's make some popcorn!" Linus exclaimed as everyone cheered.

"There's NOTHING better than popcorn, Big Purple. The more you make, the more you eat!" Peppermint Patty smiled. "What do you think, Marcie? Marcie? MARCIE?"

"Huh?" Marcie asked. "I'm awake. What's going on, Sir?"

"Did you hear anything we said?" Patty huffed. "We. Are. Making. POPCORN!"

"Count me in!" Marcie smiled. "I do love popcorn, almost as much as carrots."

"Oh boy, oh boy! They get to eat popcorn! I love popcorn as much as nuts!" Scooter cheered, waving at the gang.

"Popcorn IS delicious." Miss Etta agreed. "You know popcorn is quite delicious. I can almost taste it now."

"You're making me really hungry, Miss Etta. HEY GUYS, LET ME MAKE THE POPCORN!" Scooter suggested.

"Okay, Scoots." Peppermint Patty smiled.

"I'll meet you up in the treehouse." Scooter said.

"Alright, everybody! Let's go!" Barney cheered.
