Chapter 2: We Just Can't Wait

The next day, at the Van Pelt House, Linus was in a deep slumber when suddenly...

"GET UP YOU BLOCKHEAD!" Lucy bellowed out as she entered his room. Linus bolted awake. "Do you know what today is?!"

"I know the song Lucy! It's Friday!" Linus exclaimed before remembering that today was the opening of the new park.

"Yes! But today is also the opening of the new park! We gotta hurry!" Lucy exclaimed. Linus took a look at his clock and saw it was 7 am.

"But we don't have to be there for at least two hours!" Linus exclaimed.

"Does it matter?! We have to be ready!" Lucy said, angrily. "Now wash up, brush your teeth, get dressed, and help me decide what shoes to wear!"

"Good grief..." Linus groaned as he got up and out of bed. "Alright, let's go!" Linus then approached the bathroom and began to wash his face. "Is ReRun coming with us?"

"No. Mom won't let him come yet, until she reads the safety report about it in the newspaper." Lucy said. "Once she knows it safe, then he can come with us. In the meantime, he can play with Scooter and Miss Etta." Once Linus had brushed his teeth, he then went to get dressed.

It was a pain to get ready in a hurry, especially since choosing Lucy's shoes took nearly an hour, but both Van Pelt siblings were ready and rushed out the door.

Meanwhile, Peppermint Patty actually got a good night sleep last night. For once. After getting dressed and eating breakfast, she and Marcie left her house and began to run to the park. "Come along, Marcie! It's time to see the opening of the new park!" Peppermint Patty smiled. "I hope the caboose will be big enough for all of us."

"If the caboose is in the park, you think the rest of the train is in the forest?" Marcie joked, but Peppermint Patty didn't get it. "That was a joke, sir."

"Don't embarrass me, Marcie! And quit calling me sir!" Peppermint Patty said.

Meanwhile, Charlie Brown, Sally, and Snoopy rushed out of their house, all ready to head to the park, with Barney in Snoopy's paws. They rushed to Heather's house and knocked on her door. She answered.

"You ready?" Charlie Brown smiled.

"Yup!" Heather squealed happily, showing off a new beautiful white dress.

"Then come on!" Sally smiled as all four of them began to run as fast as they can to the park. The entire gang, Schroeder, Frieda, PigPen, Patty Swanson, Franklin, Violet, Eudora, even Woodstock rushed to the new park. They wanted to beat the crowds when it was time to officially open.

At the new park, Peppermint Patty and Marcie were the first ones there. They stopped at the opening ribbon to catch their breaths. "What time is it now, Marcie?" Peppermint Patty panted.

"It's 8:45. We're 15 minutes early, sir." Marcie panted.

"That's good." Peppermint Patty smiled before looking at most of the park from behind the ribbon. "What time is it now?"

"8:46, Sir. Here come the others." Signaled Marcie as they all caught up to them. "This ain't a race."

"I know it isn't a race, Marcie." Franklin smiled, holding a flower from his backyard. He smiled and put it in her hair. "Perfect."

"Almost." She retorted, grabbing a rose and pinning it to his shirt. "There, now it's perfection."

"Is this a prom?" Lucy groaned in disbelief.

"No." Linus stated. "Do we say things like that about you and Schroeder?"

"No." Lucy replied.

As the minutes passed, everyone was talking to four of the kids. Charlie Brown especially was enjoying their company. "Who're your friends?" Sally asked.

"Kami, Mario, Scott and Angela." Explained Charlie Brown as he held onto the Barney doll. "And you won't believe it! Not only are they friends of our friends, but they know Barney too."

"We've seen him and played with him, we also heard stories from the others, too." Angela said.

"We can tell he's the talk of the town!" Kami exclaimed.

"He is, Kam!" Peppermint Patty exclaimed.

"At least or first interactions with him WON'T be so awkward." Sally said as Mister Boyd arrived with a large pair of scissors. As he cut the ribbon, everyone ran into the park in bewilderment. "It's so pretty here, I'm gonna cry." Sally mentioned.

"What's so fabulous about it?" Eudora wondered.

"It's beautiful." Sally told her best friend.

"I guess, but all this trash." Eudora shuddered.

"Check it out! They've got a swing!" Marcie exclaimed, climbing aboard.

"A steering wheel too!" Peppermint Patty stated.

"What a funny bench." Linus laughed as he and Schroeder sat down on it, spinning it around and around before getting thrown off.

"I think I'm gonna puke." Schroeder groaned, nauseated by the experience.

"Me too." Linus clutched his stomach.

Curious, Sally and Eudora sat in it, giggling as they spun it around and around, getting all dizzy.

One of the boys, Mario, rang a bell, catching everyone off guard. "Come on, everybody!" he exclaimed. "Let's get started!"

"I think I like this park, Sir. It's got a trusty swing, just like the first time we met the others." Marcie smiled.

"Don't get too happy, Space Cadet Marcie." Joked Peppermint Patty. Scott then wandered into a shed and retrieved some trash bags. "What's he doing?"

"Race you to find out!"

"You're on!"

"Here's a trash bag for you, Mario, and one for Kami, and one for what's-her-face." Scott explained. As he handed out the bags, he said, "You'll need a trash bag too, Angela."

"We're gonna clean up this park." Eudora smiled.

"Hey! Instead of just picking up the trash, let's make it a race!" Mario suggested.

"A race? Do we have to?" whined Sally.

"Come on, it'll be fun." Eudora smiled.

"Big Purple, will you please start the race for us?" asked Peppermint Patty as Charlie Brown held up the Barney doll.

"I'd be happy to! On your marks, get set-" Charlie brown said, imitating the dinosaur's voice before shouting "GO!"

Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

All around the cobbler's bench

Charlie Brown chased the beagle

Charlie Brown thought 'twas all in fun...

POP! Goes the beagle.

Penny for a spool of thread

Penny for a needle

That's the way the money goes...

POP! Goes the beagle.

The painter needs a ladder and brush,

The artist needs an easel;

The dancers need a fiddler's tune...

POP! Goes the beagle.

I've no time to where to sigh

Or to tell the reason why

Kiss me quick, I'm off, good-bye...

POP! Goes the beagle.

The gang and their new friends all ran to Barney who was sitting on the tool shed, with Sally and Kami being the last two in line. Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown were neck and neck for first, till Heather blasted past them. Not that Charlie Brown minded. As long as he wasn't last. "Pop!" Heather smiled.

"Pop!" Charlie Brown smiled.

"Pop!" Peppermint Patty smiled.

"Pop!" Mario smiled.

"Pop!" Lucy smiled.

"Pop!" Linus smiled.

"Pop!" Schroeder smiled before Snoopy jumped and tapped Barney next.

"Pop!" Scott smiled.

"Pop!" Franklin smiled.

"Pop!" Marcie smiled.

"Pop!" Eudora smiled.

"Pop!" PigPen smiled.

"Pop!" Angela smiled.

"Pop!" Frieda smiled.

"Pop!" Violet smiled.

"Pop!" Patty Swanson smiled.

"Pop." Sally frowned.

"Pop." Kami frowned, being the last to tap Barney. Suddenly, Barney came to life.

Barney:

POP! Goes the beagle!

"BARNEY!" The kids all exclaimed as they hugged their dinosaur friend, along with Snoopy.

"HEY!" Snoopy happily exclaimed.

"BARNEY!" everyone exclaimed.

"Hi everybody." Barney smiled. "It looks like you were having a lot of fun running around the new park. It looks lovely. What kind of game were you playing?"

"I saw some litter on the ground, so I thought we should pick it up." Eudora said happily.

"Then we decided to make a race." Mario stated.

"Aren't you the one afraid of dinosaurs?" Angela asked Eudora as the Peanuts Gang giggled.

"Was!" Eudora shouted, red in the face.

"Now let's see who found the most trash." Scott said.

"That's a good idea, Scott." Charlie Brown commented.

"You found a lot, Scott." Commented Barney.

"Check this out!" exclaimed Peppermint Patty, dumping her bag of trash in the can.

"You found even more." Barney noticed. "Way to go, Peppermint patty." Then it was Heather's turn. "Wow, you found the most so far! Great job, Heather!"

"How much did you find, Kam?" Marcie softly asked as Kami tossed in a wrapper.

"I had kind of a hard time." Kami said. "And you?"

"Just four juice boxes and a soda can." Marcie sighed.

"That's okay. I'm sure you two tried your best." Barney said.

"We sure did!" cheered a now bubbly Sally.

"So, what do you wanna do now?" asked Mario. "We can have another race, or play soccer or do some more cleanup of the park."

"You SURE like to keep busy." Eudora smiled.

"It sort of reminds me of watching little ants go by." Barney said. "Always moving and always working."

"We want to ENJOY the park, Big Purple, not spend all day cleaning it!" Peppermint Patty whined.

"We can make it fun, Sir." Marcie said before laughing.

"What's so funny?" asked Peppermint Patty.

"Do I remind you of an ant?" asked Scott, holding two sticks to his head.

"With those pretend antennas, you really do." Barney said.

"How about me?" Linus asked.

"And me!" Violet exclaimed.

"Do I look like an ant?" Charlie Brown wondered.

"You all do!" Barney smiled. "You look like a whole line of marching ants, and one giggling, little one."

"I'm not little." Marcie realized. "I'm just as tall as Kami and a bit taller than Sally, by proportions."

"Hey!" Sally blushed.

"I have an idea! Let's have an ant parade!" Linus exclaimed.

"Great idea!" Barney exclaimed.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

The ants go marching one by one. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching two by two. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching three by three.

Peppermint Patty:

The little one stops to climb the tree.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain.

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

The ants go marching four by four. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching five by five. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching six by six.

Peppermint patty:

The little one stops to pick up sticks.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain.

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

The ants go marching seven by seven. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching eight by eight. Hurrah! Hurrah!

The ants go marching nine by nine.

Peppermint Patty:

The little one stops to check the time.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain.

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

The ants go marching ten by ten.

Peppermint Patty:

The little one stops to say…

Sally, Marcie and Kami:

"The end".

"Very nice, Marcie." Franklin praised, patting her on the back as she blushed.

"Awesome, Sally!" Eudora cheered.

"Incredible, Kami." Added Angela.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain.

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
