Treehouse of Sounds

Chapter 1: Stop and Listen

It was a calm Friday afternoon at the Peanuts Gang's school and everyone was in the treehouse, enjoying the day. "I love the treehouse, Heather." Charlie Brown told his girlfriend as they took turns looking through the telescope.

"Me too." Heather smiled.

"Come on, let's see what everyone's doing." Charlie Brown suggested as the two slid down the slide into the treehouse. Inside the treehouse, Sally, Linus, Rerun and Eudora were playing a game whilst Schroeder was preforming Beethoven sonatas for Lucy to listen to. Franklin was jamming out on his guitar with Snoopy, Peppermint Patty was drawing pictures with Kristen, Ashley, Stephen and Robert whilst Marcie was fast asleep in Peppermint Patty's hammock.

"Sure is a busy day here." Heather commented, hands over her ears.

"WHAT?" Charlie Brown asked, also with hands over his ears.

"I SAID IT SURE IS A BUSY DAY IN HERE!" Heather repeated as Linus, Sally, Rerun and Eudora's game paused.

"Why are you screaming?" Linus asked. "We can hear you loud and clear."

"We couldn't hear each other over Franklin's guitar." Heather blushed.

"Oh." Sally shrugged as Charlie Brown and Heather headed towards the round table. Peppermint Patty greeted them with a friendly wave.

"What're you doing?" Ashley asked.

"We were gonna ask the same thing." Heather said.

"We're drawing pictures." Stephen said. "Guess what I drew."

"Is it…a football?" Robert asked.

"It is. I love football." Stephen said.

"I drew me and my brothers." Robert said.

"Wow!" exclaimed Charlie Brown.

"I drew my cat. Her name is Princess." Kristen smiled.

"She's so cute." Heather smiled.

"I drew me and Alissa." Ashley smiled. "What did you draw, Peppermint Patty?"

"Take a guess, gang." Peppermint Patty declared.

"Is it…a dog?" Stephen began.

"No." Peppermint Patty replied.

"Is it a rocket ship?" Robert asked.

"Nope." Peppermint Patty said.

"What about a baseball?" Ashley wondered.

"Still not it." Peppermint Patty replied.

"Is it BJ?" asked Heather.

"Nope." Denied Peppermint Patty.

"I know. It's Marcie. Right?" Ashley asked.

"Surprisingly, no." Peppermint Patty said. Now they all were stumped. "Anyone else care to guess?" the tomboy wondered.

"Is it…Cupcake?" Charlie Brown asked, pointing at the tomboy's teddy bear sitting on the 'porch swing', next to the Barney doll.

"It is!" Peppermint Patty exclaimed happily as she ran to the porch and grabbed Cupcake and the Barney doll. She placed the latter on the table as she began singing about her teddy.

Peppermint Patty:

Me and my best teddy bear

Sitting in my favorite chair,

We are going out to play

Just like every day.

I got lots of friends out there

And they're lots of fun,

But they're not my teddy bear

She's my favorite one.

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready to play.

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready to play.

You know, I've got a lot of friends that I play with.

You know, I've got a lot of friends who are fun.

But then they can't do anything like my teddy,

'Cause my teddy, she is the one.

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready for bed.

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready for bed.

You know I'm never really frightened at nighttime.

You know I'm not even scared of the dark.

'Cause with my teddy right here alongside me

I'm not even scared of a shark!

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready for school.

Me and my teddy, gettin' all ready

Gettin' all ready for school.

I got to leave her at home

By herself all alone.

But she doesn't mind, and that's cool.

That's cool!

Her friends at the drawing table applauded, as did Snoopy. "That was awesome." Heather cheered.

"It sure was." Robert added as he, Kristen, Ashley and Stephen gathered around them.

"I know, Heather." Peppermint Patty said as she hugged Cupcake. No one noticed the Barney doll come to life, though. Almost.

"HEY!" exclaimed Snoopy.

"BARNEY!" Barney's friends, Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and Heather exclaimed as they turned around to see their dinosaur friend.

"Hi everybody." Barney chuckled happily. "What're you doing?"

"We're drawing pictures." Ashley explained. "Some of us are playing games and others are listening to music."

"I can tell. You guys sure make a lot of noise with your instruments." Barney smiled.

"Thanks!" Schroeder called out.

"I can make noises too." Peppermint Patty smiled, tapping her feet on the floor. "See? I can dance."

"Fancy footwork." Heather smiled, joining in the fun. Her shoes made a tapping sound.

"Show off." Thought Peppermint Patty.

"May I join?" Barney asked.

"Of course, Big Purple." Peppermint Patty smiled as Barney got on his tap shoes with a wave of magic. Snoopy smiled and got his tap shoes on too.

Barney:

Happy dancin' with my shoes

Helps to chase away the blues

makes me feel just like I may

Go happy dancin' all day

Happy dancin' all day

Barney, Heather and Peppermint Patty:

Happy dancin' with my shoes

Helps to chase away the blues

makes me feel just like I may

Go happy dancin' all day

Barney:

happy dancin' happy dancin' all day

The kids clapped as the tomboy headed over to the hammock to put Cupcake down for a nap. "What're you doing?" wondered Kristen.

"It's Cupcake's naptime." Peppermint Patty explained. "When she's sleepy, I rock the hammock and sing a lullaby for her."

"How does the lullaby go?" Ashley asked as she, Robert and Stephen joined the girls.

"I'll teach you." Peppermint Patty smiled as Barney made a cradle appear with his magic. Smiling, Peppermint Patty tucked Cupcake in the cradle.

Peppermint Patty:

How do Bunny Wunnies go to sleep?

They don't waste their time, counting sheep.

They climb into bed,

All in a row.

And mommy Bunny Wunnie sings to them,

Like so.

Goodnight, Bunny Wunnies,

Morning come soon.

Sleep tight, Bunny Wunnies,

Under the moon.

All the stars above a vigil, keep.

Barney's friends and Peppermint Patty:

Goodnight, Bunny Wunnies,

Go to sleep.

Stephen:

Goodnight, Bunny Wunnies,

Morning come soon.

Ashley:

Sleep tight, Bunny Wunnies,

Under the moon.

Robert:

All the stars above a vigil, keep.

Kristen:

Goodnight, Bunny Wunnies,

Go to sleep.

Peppermint Patty:

Goodnight, Bunny Wunnies,

Go to sleep.

"Shh. Snoopy's sleeping." Barney shushed as he picked up Snoopy and carried him to the little reading corner of the treehouse. Everyone then heard snoring from outside.

"He's not the only one." Schroeder shushed. "Look, guys." Everyone then looked outside to Scooter and Miss Etta sleeping in her nest.

"A two for one special." Franklin joked.

"Franklin…" the kids groaned.

"It's true." Franklin sighed as they all went back to what they were doing before.

"There sure are a lot of noises in the treehouse today." Linus noticed. "Listen to the loose floorboards against our shoes…or sandals." He added as each floorboard squeaked against the weight.

Sally then ran up to the lookout and slid down the slide. "The slide whooshes whenever we slide down it." She realized.

"I can hear Schroeder playing his piano." Lucy smiled as she leaned against the piano.

"Snoopy's growling in his sleep." Robert noticed.

"Woodstock's singing." Stephen said. "Hear him whistle?"

"We do." Linus smiled.

"Listen, guys. I can hear snoring." Eudora noticed.

"We know-it's Scooter and Miss Etta." Rerun reported.

"No-it's coming from in here." Eudora explained. "But where?"

"Maybe Cupcake snores." Charlie Brown suggested.

"I doubt it." Peppermint Patty laughed. "Cupcake doesn't make a sound when she sleeps; just like me."

"Patty, you snore." Kristen sighed.

"Very loudly." Ashley added.

"Do not!" argued Peppermint Patty as everyone heard the snoring. "See? That's not me."

"I wonder who-or what-it can be." Linus realized as the gang looked around the treehouse. "Hello?"

"Where is that funny snoring noise coming from?" Stephen asked Schroeder.

"I wish I knew." Schroeder sighed.

"THE SOUNDS ARE COMING FROM IN HERE ALRIGHT!" Kristen commented, hands over her ears.

"WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?" Robert cried out.

"I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Kristen exclaimed.

"Oh brother." Franklin sighed. "Sure is a noisy day out. Huh, Marcie? Marcie? Where are you?" he called out, but no one was listening. "Marcie?" he called out again, catching Ashley and Charlie Brown's attentions.

"What's wrong, Franklin?" Ashley asked.

"Where's Marcie?" Franklin replied.

"I didn't even know she was here." Charlie Brown confessed.

"We'll help you find her, though." Ashley promised as the trio looked around. After a bit of searching, they decided to take a quick break. "Well, we looked EVERYWHERE! The classrooms, the gym, the library, ALL OVER the treehouse and the playground. NO ONE knows where she is."

"Maybe we should take a quick break. Then we can keep looking." Charlie Brown suggested, unknowingly leaning on the hammock.

"Charlie Brown, whatever you do, DON'T move." Franklin suggested. "Or everything in that hammock is gonna go flying!"

"It is?" Charlie Brown asked as he accidentally let go of the hammock and everything in it fell out and the hammock spun around and around. "It did."

"YOU BLOCKHEAD!" Lucy exclaimed, awaking Snoopy.

"There's another sound-Lucy yelling." Linus teased as he helped Franklin, Charlie Brown and Ashley clean up the pile of toys in the hammock.

"You sure keep a lot of toys in here, Peppermint Patty." Ashley commented.

"The more, the merrier." Peppermint Patty replied as she too went to help the others. They began putting the toys back in the hammock when they realized something. "Look, guys."

"It looks like an orange cloth." Ashley commented. "We should put it away." She added as she tried to pull the cloth out of the pile. It was stuck in the pile of toys.

"I don't think that's a cloth." Kristen commented as she watched Ashley try to pull on it. She then removed a few of the toys from the heap. The kids blinked at their new findings.

"It's Marcie." Franklin smiled as she snored. "She's sound asleep."

"And snoring." Charlie Brown added.

"Who knew she could be so loud?" Kristen asked, covering her ears. Peppermint Patty and Franklin raised their hands as the former got her in the hammock, swinging it a little.

"You can learn a lot of stuff when you listen." Barney chuckled.

"We sure can. For example-the hammock creeks a little when we rock it." Franklin realized.

"We can hear a lot of things." Stephen smiled.

"I wonder what else we can hear." Barney realized as he led the rest of the kids to the playground.

Barney:

We can listen to the sound of a frog in the water.

Listen to a mommy talking to her daughter.

Listen to the animals playing in the woods.

And listen to the sounds of our neighborhood.

Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And listen to the sounds of our neighborhood.

Listen with your left ear and your right.

Listen to the sounds of the day and night.

(various sounds)

We listen with our ears, that's right.

That's right!

Sally and Eudora:

We can listen to the sound of a train going by.

Rerun:

Hear the parade on the Fourth of July

Charlie Brown and Heather:

Listen to the animals playing in the woods

And listen to the sounds of our neighborhood.

Barney, Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

And listen to the sounds of our neighborhood

Listen with your left ear and your right.

Listen to the sounds of the day and night.

(various sounds)

We listen with our ears, that's right.

That's right!

If we tried to listen with our eyes and nose,

Tried to listen with our fingers and toes,

We'd be all mixed up and never hear a thing.

We couldn't hear a bell ringing ding, ding, ding

We couldn't hear a bell ringing ding, ding, ding

Oh, listen with your left ear and your right.

Listen to the sounds of the day and night.

(various sounds)

We listen with our ears, that's right.

Barney's friends and Peanuts Gang:

That's right!
