"So when are you going to pick a wedding date?"
The words are like ice cold water being thrown on me in the middle of a deep sleep. I blink a couple times and focus on my best friend, who happens to be staring at me with a smirk. She knew I didn't want to talk about this, but here we are…. talking about it.
"I don't know why everyone is in such a rush." I say, shoving a bite of yogurt into my mouth. We were sitting in her kitchen. She was looking over some documents and I was shoveling chocolate covered strawberry yogurt into my mouth. We were supposed to be at the mall right now, but Queen duties came before all. Prince Conta decided he needed a last-minute audience with Her Majesty. So here we were, still stuck at Court, like always.
"When most girls get engaged, they don't stop talking about it." Lissa leans back in her chair and raises an eyebrow at me- something I still couldn't do. "You, however, are the exact opposite. You haven't even asked me to be your maid of honor yet!"
"Woah, woah woah! Who said anything about you being my maid of honor?" I ask, cracking a smile. Lissa rolled her eyes and flipped the page of the packet she was looking at. We both knew there wouldn't be anyone else who I would even consider to be my maid of honor.
"As I was saying, if you don't set a date I can't make sure my schedule is clear." Lissa continues, making me groan in protest.
"You're my best friend, you should be able to clear your schedule for your best friend's wedding." I say, taking a drink of my orange juice. Lissa looks up and flips her long, pale hair over her shoulder.
"Maybe in normal life, yes, but someone decided it was a good idea for me to become the Moroi Queen." She says, I knew she was trying to come off annoyed, but I could see the playful gleam in her jade eyes. "So you need to set a date. Not just for me, but for Dimitiri too."
The sound of my fiancé's name made the butterflies lose it in my stomach. I couldn't help but crack a small smile and I know Lissa noticed my sudden attitude change.
"He's to patient with you." She continues, "You know he's dying to start planning this wedding, and he's just being nice because he loves you. The day after he proposed, he was with Christian and he didn't stop talking about it. Christian said he didn't know Dimitri had the ability to speak that much." That sent a pang of guilt straight to my heart. She was right, Dimitri was being extremely patient with me, and I knew he was dying on the inside.
"Why do you always have to be right?" I ask her, trying to look exasperated at my best friend. She just gave me a dazzling smile and fluttered her eyelashes at me.
"You have two hours until Dimitri has to meet Christian for the day." Is all she says before returning her whole focus to the large packet of papers in front of her.
I sigh and get up, throwing my yogurt away before making my way out of the house. When Liss had first been crowned Queen she gave Dimitri and I the house right next to her and Christian's. I, of course, had argued with her because I wanted to live with her so I could defend her at any moment. She had dismissed my argument almost immediately and handed Dimitri the keys to our new house.
I trudge across the lawn and key into my house. It's smaller than Lissa's house, but it was still way to much space for just Dimitri and myself. I didn't hear anything upon opening the door and entering the living room, but I knew he was here.
"Dimitri?" I call out, closing the door behind me. I hear a little bit of shuffling before hearing the lightly laced Russian voice call back.
"In the kitchen, Roza!" I smile at the sound of his voice and it sends shivers down my spine. I unlace my boots and take them off before stepping foot into the living room- one of Dimitri's pet peeves. I pad into the kitchen and find Dimitri stirring something that is on the stove. He doesn't turn to face me, but I know he knows I'm there. I cross the short distance between us and wrap my arms around his waist and resting my cheek on his back. I can practically feel his smile.
"I thought you were going shopping with Lissa?" He asks, not turning to face me. One of his hands moves and covers mine, where they link around his waist. I breathe in his scent and the smell of whatever deliciousness he is cooking.
"We were supposed to, but duty calls. Prince Conta decided he desperately needed to speak with Her Majesty." I roll my eyes, "Not buying any new clothes. Asshole." I mutter the last word under my breath, but the chuckle coming from my fiancé proves he heard it. I let go of him and hoist myself so I can sit on the counter next to where he is cooking. I can see that he is making eggs and bacon now and my stomach growls, despite the yogurt I just ate at Lissa's house.
Dimitri raises a single eyebrow at me -damn his talents. "Don't look at me like that Comrade." I shoot him a sexy smile "You've known me long enough to know that my appetite isn't one to be messed with."
He smiles and shakes his head at me in amusement. He opens the refrigerator and takes out a bag of shredded cheese, setting it on the counter and sprinkling some of the scrambled eyes. I flash a big smile knowing I had gotten what I wanted. Cheesy scrambled eggs were always my favorite. The love of my life tended to take the healthier route. He continues to cook, and we settle into a comfortable silence. I lean my head back against a cupboard and watch Dimitri work on flipping the bacon.
"Hey, Comrade?" I say, after a couple minutes of silence. Dimitri looks up from the bacon and settles his deep brown eyes on me.
"Yes Roza." He says, his deep voice making me want to undress him right there where we stood.
"You know I love you, right?" I ask, my façade faltering a bit as I remember Lissa and I's earlier conversation. Something flashes in Dimitri's eyes, and I immediately recognize it as concern. He puts down the spatula he was using and leans back against the counter.
"Of course, I do, and I love you too." He says, reaching over and brushing a strand of dark hair out of my face. "Why do you ask, Milaya?"
I shrug my shoulders and steal a piece of bacon off the plate next to me, earning a sterm look from my Russian God.
"Just wondering. I have another question for you." I say, slowly chewing the strip of bacon and meeting his eyes.
"What is it, my love." He says, smiling softly.
"Got any plans for July 14th?" I ask, a sly smile on my face. He looks at me with a confused look on his flawless face.
"That's a year from now, Roza. Is Lissa planning something that far out?" He asks, and it squeezes my heart. Leave it to Dimitri to immediately think it had something to do with our charges.
"No, but I thought maybe we could." I say, trying to be nonchalant about the whole conversation. I can tell by the look on Dimitri's face that it still wasn't clicking. Did he really not think I was ever going to plan this wedding.
"What did you have in mind?" He asks, taking a couple plates out of the cupboard and scooping some eggs and bacon onto each.
"What about a wedding?" I ask, and the minute the words leave my mouth, Dimitri freezes and slowly turns to look at me. I mentally smirk, knowing I caught him off guard, which was hard to do when you were engaged to the god of guardians. I can slowly see the shock wearing off and he's suddenly in front of me in a flash. Since I am sitting on counter, we are almost the same height. We stare directly into each other's eyes and suddenly the familiar feeling of Dimitri's lips comes over me. I wrap my arms around his neck and feel his hands rest on my thighs. We break a part when we realize we still need to breath.
"Are you being serious?" He asks, staring into my eyes and kissing my forehead.
"Of course, I am Comrade. Did you think I was going to make you wait forever? I couldn't marry you without testing your patience." I joke, smiling at him with my infamous Rose Hathaway smile.
"You test my patience every day, Roza." He says, chuckling.
"I'm going to choose to take that as a compliment." I say, running my fingers down his biceps. He chuckles again and buries his face in my neck.
"I love you, Roza." He mutters against my skin, making me shiver.
"I love you too, Comrade. And you know, I'm a sucker for wedding cake."
Dimitri's deep laugh fills the kitchen.
Hello! I hope you all enjoy this little one shot. I haven't written anything in years so I might be a little out of practice. However, I am stuck in my house due to COVID-19 so I figured writing could be something to pass the time. If you have any other prompts you want me to write about, shoot me a comment and I will do my best!
