Remember me now, time cannot erase

I can hear your whispers in my mind

I've become what you cannot embrace

Our memory will be my lullaby

Sing me to sleep now

Sing me to sleep

Won't you sing me to sleep now?

Sing me to sleep

Sophie stumbled shakily into her bedroom. She softly closed the door behind her, and leaned against the frame. Her hands were trembling and covered in blood. Her eyes were wide with shock and grief as she looked up at the stars hanging from the ceiling and slowly sank to the floor.

The sobs she had been holding back since she got home threatened to burst out of her, and a few tears slipped down her cheeks.

Her world was crumbling all around her.

Everyone was in shock. The Neverseen had finally won.

She couldn't stop them. She was too slow, too narrow minded. Not seeing the signs. Refusing to overestimate them. Constantly pushing to be the ones with the upper hand.

It didn't work.

She failed. She failed to be the Moonlark.

And it cost Fitz his life.

Oh, Fitz.

Memories flooded Sophie's mind. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block them all out. But they were coming too fast.

The screams.

The shouts.

The low hum of everything fading away to two shocked teal eyes staring at her, and then rolling into the back of his head.

The thump of a body falling to the ground.

The ache of her throat screaming his name.

The red rimmed vision of her eyes, tunneling on the bleeding boy in front of her.

She threw a goblin star, hitting the killer precisely between the eyes. If her heart weren't stuck in her throat, she would have congratulated herself for her aim.

Sophie had knelt down next to Fitz, his eyes closed and his face pinched in pain, and his hands clutching his heart. She shouted for a medic- Elwin, Livvy, even Edaline or Della. Just someone who could help her. But they were too far away from the main fight.

Fitz had noticed one of the Neverseens members running across Havenfield and away from the fight, instead running towards Calla's Panakes tree. Fitz had followed the member, who held a glass bottle over Callas roots, and he attacked them. The bottle went flying, and shattered on the ground a few feet away from the tree. The acidic liquid inside turned the grass around it a sickly brown, and the flowers shrivelled and withered.

The attacker cursed, and got up to his feet. His hood fell back, revealing that it was Fitz's older brother, Alvar. He had somehow healed from being sick, and it enraged Fitz. They fought, with knives, fists, and words.

Sophie had noticed that Fitz had disappeared, and saw him fighting Alvar near the Panakes. She ran over to help him as Alvar and Fitz stood a foot away from each other, Alvars back to Sophie. Fitz had a knife pointed at Alvar's throat, ready to thrust if he so much as moved, and he said calmly, "It's over, Alvar, You lost."

But Alvar had only smirked at the comment and said, "Is it really, dear brother?" And as quick as a flash, he drew a silver gun and shot.

Sophie screamed, Fitz fell, and Alvar was killed. Sophie was able to haul Fitz towards Calla's Panakes and lean him against the trunk. She quickly made him eat some of the blossoms. But he still grunted and winced. His blood was seeping through his tunic, and his hands glistened with red. He kept breathing deeply, trying to hold on to his shred of life as Sophie pressed her hands on his wound, trying to stop the blood flow.

Sophie kept shouting for someone to come help her, until Fitz finally coughed and said something like, "Sophie, no one's coming. It's okay."

"But it's not okay! I-I'm not going to let you die!" Tears pricked her eyes as his eyes started to glaze over and droop.

"Sophie… it's okay. I'm not scared. I'm just glad that you can be here with me." He tried for a smile, but it came out as a grimace. He coughed again, red spit flying out of his mouth.

Sophie stood up shakily. "I'll-I'll go get help. If I can find Elwin or Livvy-"

"No, Sophie! Please… don't leave me. I'm not going to make it… and I don't want to be alone." His voice was growing quieter with every breath he took. His eyes drooped more, and his breathing was ragged.

"No, don't say that," she said, kneeling back next to him. "You are going to make it-"

"No I'm not. We both… we both know it Sophie. I just… I just want to be with you, okay?"

Sophie swallowed thickly as she whispered, "Okay." She patted her lap, letting him know that he could rest his head there. He shifted, and she laid his head down gently.

He hummed thoughtfully as they sat there, listening to the swaying of Callas branches.

After what seemed like hours, but was probably only minutes, Fitz broke into another coughing fit. He hacked and wheezed, wincing as he clutched his stomach. Sophie gave him a few more Pancakes petals. A sheen of sweat covered his forehead.

"Sophie-"

"Shhh," she ordered. "You can rest." She began to play with his dark locks of hair, brushing off of his forehead.

He nodded faintly and closed his eyes, his breathing getting softer.

"Sophie?" he muttered.

"Hm?" she asked, concern filling her already watery eyes.

"Can you… can you sing… me a song?"

Sophie smiled painfully as she whispered, "Of course."

She began to softly sing a human song that her human mother used to sing to her.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine," she sang, cradling his head. "You make me happy, when skies are grey."

FItz smiled softly, his breathing slowing down.

"You'll never know dear, how much I love you."

Fitz's chest barely rose and fell. He opened his eyes a fraction, just to see her face.

"Please don't take…" she felt her throat start to close up, and she managed to choke out in a whisper, "My sunshine away."

And with that last note, Fitz fell into eternal sleep.

More tears flowed from Sophie's eyes as she came out of the flashback. It was all her fault. She could have been able to save him. She could have gone for Elwin or Livvy, and tried to help with the wound more.

Her friends found her clutching Fitz in her arms, trying not to let the sadness and guilt creep in. They had to keep fighting, so she focused on anger as she continued to attack the Neverseen.

But they failed.

She failed.

Sophie began to heave ugly sobs, tears dropping from her cheeks to her hands as she covered her face.

Everyone was gone- whether they were dead, exiled, or banished.

She had been able to escape by making it seem like she accidentally fell off a cliff when the Neverseen tried to put another ability-restrictor on her, but then she teleported back to Jolie's room in Havenfield, where she knew nobody would look. When no one was nearby, she went to her room on shaky legs.

All the adults- Grady, Edaline, Alden, Della, Kesler, Juline, Mr. Forkle, and more were exiled.

Dex, Biana, Tam, Linh, Wylie, Marella, and Maruca were either taken into custody of the Neverseen, or banished.

And Keefe… he was in critical condition. He took a knife covered in poison to his shoulder for Sophie, but she was able to call Elwin and Livvy over quick enough to get him in the makeshift infirmary at Havenfield. The only reason the Neverseen were letting him heal was because Lady Gisela had more plans for him.

Sophie's sobbing subsided to small hiccups and a few tears at a time before she changed out of her soiled clothes. They were covered in blood, vomit, dirt, and grime, and she reminded herself to burn them.

She showered, and enjoyed the feeling of the cold water running down her back. More than once did she break down crying, hugging her arms to her chest. When the sadness and guilt became overwhelming, she finally just turned off the water and stood there, leaning against the wall, taking deep breaths.

Sophie began to try and sing, "You Are My Sunshine", but the watergates threatened to open all the way. More salty tears streamed out of her eyes, and her words came out in gasps and blubbers, until she finally gave up to letting the sobs rack her chest and squeeze her heart, until everything shut down, until all she felt was numb and broken.

She started to feel her sanity slip away as the guilt became unbearable.

Her vision blurred, but not from tears.

Her head throbbed, but not from painful memories.

Her heart ached, but not from the loss of her loved ones.

Her sight became dark, and all she saw was a pair of teal eyes, and as she drifted off into her eternal sleep, her very last thought was his very last words.

"Can you sing me a song?"

A/N:

Okay I want to make something very clear first:

I DID NOT WANT FOR IT TO BE SOPHITZ OKAY?

IT WAS GOING TO BE SOKEEFE, WITH HIM ASKING HER TO SING A SONG FOR HIM IN THE INFIRMARY, AND THEN HIM GOING TO SLEEP, AND THEN YEARS LATER WHEN THEY'RE ADULTS AND THEY FINALLY TAKE DOWN THE NEVERSEEN, BUT SOPHIE IS ON HER DEATHBED WITH KEEFE, AND HE'S SINGING THE SAME SONG TO HER, AND THEN SHE DIES.

IT STARTED OUT WITH JUST HER FLASHBACKING TO FITZ DYING, AND THEN THE PART OF ME THAT SHIPPED SOPHITZ IN THE BEGINNING CAME OUT, AND IT TURNED OUT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

SO I DIDN'T WANT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN OKAY?

*deep breath* Okay. Please don't kill me my Sokeefe friends, (A. fan: don't send your Shady Black Belt Protection Squad™ after me. Cary, I'm sorry)

I might make the Sokeefe version of this, maybe maybe not. Just be on the lookout.

ALSO: This is really important. I have a poll on my profile on what Kotlc fanfic to write, and because I can't decide, YOU GET TO CHOOSE FOR ME! SO PLEASE VOTE!

Sidenote: The song that inspired this was 'Sing Me To Sleep' by Alan Walker (literally he's the only guy that gives me inspiration right now.)

Don't forget to R&R! They seriously make my day! :D
