"So how old are you again?" Helena Bertinelli, the Matron of Spiral, asked with an exasperated look on her face.
Tiger noticed as her expression of surprise soon turned to one of annoyance. Agent 1 couldn't blame her, his partner Agent 37 was hardly paying attention. Instead he was bending himself in all sorts of strange ways. Tiger raised an eyebrow as he bent backwards and poked his head through his legs giggling.
"Agent 37 report!" She barked.
At this Grayson stood up fast as a whip. Tiger would have been amused by his reaction if not for the nervous look on his partners face, which was strange for the normally carefree man.
Err boy, Tiger thought.
Matron sighed pinching the bridge of her nose she tried asking with a gentler tone. "Dick what happened?"
At this Grayson relaxed a bit. He took a deep breath and stood up straight. "Well, I think Tiger explained what happened pretty well. We had the guy cornered in the warehouse and we were getting ready to pick up the device and since he was only supposed to be a delivery guy for the buyer I didn't think the guy would actually know how to use it but then out of nowhere, he pulls out the devise and zaps me with it and then everything thing went white for like twenty seconds." Grayson paused to inhale after his ridiculously long sentence.
"The point is I rushed in first and I hadn't taken into account every possible scenario, luckily Tiger wasn't too far behind me and when I came to, I found myself in the jet on our way back to headquarters." Dick scuffed his shoe on the ground bashfully. "So how long will this whole thing last?"
Matron gave a long sigh. And walked over until she was right in front of Grayson. The man who once stood at least a head taller than Helena now barely stood taller than her hips. She put a hand on his shoulder and tried to give him a reassuring smile. "The de-aging process should wear off in around a week and you'll go be back to your regular twenty one year old self."
"That still begs the question." Tiger said stepping forwards, this was the first time he had spoken since this interrogation began. "How old are you?"
Grayson looked at his arms with a puzzled expression. "I, umm, I'm not sure."
Matron bent down so she was eye level with Grayson. "You're so small, you can't be more than seven years old." She stroked his hair with a soft smile on her face.
Graysons face scrunched up in annoyance and he tried swatting away the hands that were tangled in his hair. "I'm not small, I'm just waiting for my growth spurt!"
Matron gave a soft chuckle. "And when did that happen for you?"
"When I was fifteen." Grayson grumbled quietly to himself while trying to fix his hair. Suddenly his face lightened up and he slapped a hand on his forehead. "Duh! I know how I can figure this out!"
Matron gave him a curious look, similar to the one Tiger was giving him.
"When this happened most of my scars disappeared, so..." he lifted up the collar of his shirt and looked down at his stomach. "Huh, I'm around a month away from turning eleven. So I'm ten years old!"
Tiger arched an eyebrow. "And how could you confirm that?"
Grayson hesitated, then lifted up his shirt for all to see, exposing his stomach covered with small cuts and bruises that were starting to heal. Tiger eyed the bullet wound near his side and the teeth marks that seemed to have grazed his rib cage but the scar that really disturbed him was the large jagged J that started up on his chest and traveled down his waistline before coming back up again to settle on his hip.
Matron was doing well to stay calm but Tiger could see the slight wince in her face. "I'd heard about the many scars you received as Robin but I'd assumed they'd faded away with time, why have I never seen them on your adult body?"
Dick gave a small grin as he lowered his shirt. "I usually wear fake skin, for obvious reasons."
"Obvious reasons such as?" Tiger asked.
"Well what if I want to go to the beach or something? I'll totally give myself away if I show up covered in scars like these."
"Of course." Tiger mumbled. Only Grayson would complain about something as trivial as limited beach access.
"There are still stitches in your wound." Helena said with a grimace.
Dick traced his scar lightly with a finger through his shirt. "Agent A stitched me up pretty good with this dissolving thread, so I guess they reappeared when I de-aged."
Helena sighed. "Well Agent 37 I'm afraid we can't have you out in the field in your condition. We'll have to replace you with someone else until the weeks end."
"No way!" Grayson cried. "I can still fight, don't replace me with anyone!" He ran over to Tiger and latched onto his leg, causing Tiger to stumble slightly in surprise before regaining his balance.
"Grayson, I've told you many times that you are an idiot, but known that I mean it this time when I say. You. Are. An. Idiot!" Tiger said in annoyance.
To Tigers relief Grayson let go but he continued his tirade of why he should continue to work, out in the field.
"Umm, hello! I've been Robin already for like a whole year, and I've been training with Batman since I was eight! From my scars it should be obvious that I've already taken down major baddies like Two Face, Killer Croc and the Joker!"
"If anything don't your scars make it obvious that you were unable to take down any of those monsters?" Tiger had voiced this out of concern but his tone remained neutral. He regretted slightly what he had said when he saw the hurt look on Graysons face.
"Please Matron! I may have the body of an eleven year old but I still have the mind of a twenty-one year old man!"
Matron looked unconvinced.
"Fine, if that doesn't convince you than just look at my file! Look at all the work I did as Robin at this age!" He folded his arms across his chest and huffed, very much like a child, Tiger thought.
Finally after a long pause she relented. "Fine, you can remain on the field."
Tigers mouth hung open in disbelief as Grayson began dancing around him in glee.
"Woohoo! You will not be disappointed Helena." He cried.
She gave him an unimpressed look, to which he stopped dancing and immediately sobered down. "I mean you will not regret this Matron." However his large goofy smile remained on his face.
"I better not." She said fiercely, however she couldn't help a smirk from appearing on her lips. "Now go get some rest, I want you hear bright and early for briefing."
As Grayson skipped merely out of the room, Tiger was about to follow him when he was called back. "Agent 1! Wait, I want to discuss something with you."
Tiger turned back towards Matron and glanced back at his partner. Grayson was frozen at the door, looking uncertain and suspicious.
Tiger rolled his eyes and shooed him out. "Go on then, if you want to go on a mission tomorrow you'll need as much rest as your premature body can get."
Grayson hesitated before giving a sly smile and leaving, shutting the door behind him.
Matron sighed as he turned his attention back towards her. "Do you really think this is a good idea?" He asked.
She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Of course not, but I have to admit he's got some pretty good points as to why he should stay."
There was a silent pause as she seemed to collect her thoughts. "His size could be used as an advantage in some scenarios." She rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "But I want you to keep an eye on him. He says that he still has the mind of a twenty-one year old. However, having his memories and having his mind are two different things."
Tiger nodded in agreement.
"He's more impulsive and emotional now, that's why if anything goes wrong out there, if anything happens, I want you to pull him out. I'll send another agent to keep an eye on the two of you, so in the case that anything does happen you'll have backup."
Tiger nodded this was a relief. Although he still disagreed that Grayson should be allowed to go at all in his...
"I know you care about him Tiger, as annoying as he can be." Matron chuckled.
Tiger blew air out of his nose in protest. "Grayson is an idiot of a partner who is too scared to finish off the job. He is chatty, distracted and a liability."
Matron just smiled. "You don't think I thought the same thing when I was his partner. He may be an idiot, but he's a compassionate idiot, I've never met a better man than him."
Tiger grumbled. So maybe Grayson wasn't as bad as he made him out to be. Maybe he had grown on him. Maybe, just maybe, Tiger would consider Grayson a friend. However, his pride would never allow him to say such a thing. "I take personal offence to that statement." He huffed.
She still gave him that knowing smile that frustrated him to no end. "That's all Agent 1. I'll see you and your partner in the morning."
Tiger nodded his head and walked out the door. He was surprised when upon exiting the large room Grayson stumbled back from the door, a clay cup in his hands.
Tiger closed the door and folded his arms. "Eavesdropping, are we?"
Grayson got up with a bashful grin on his face. "I need to know what's being said about me, how do you think I got anything done when I was living with Batman?"
Tiger eyed the clay cup in his hands, where had he even gotten that? "How much did you hear?"
"Enough to know that you are very fond of me even though you don't show it." He giggled.
Tiger wiped a hand across his face, this was too much for one day.
"Geez! You're about as emotionally constipated as Batman! But don't worry I know you still love me!" He gushed jokingly.
Tiger growled. "Didn't I tell you to get to bed?"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say." He began flipping down a hall towards a large window overlooking the facility.
"Wrong way Grayson!" Tiger called.
He stopped right in front of the window and grinned cheekily. "What are you talking about? This isn't the wrong way, it's the long way! I always take this route, you just never see me, like you never see me eavesdropping."
Tiger raised an eyebrow. "Did you just confess to having eavesdropped before?"
Grayson paused as if deep in thought. "Maybe? Older me is definitely gonna regret this!" He cackled.
Tiger smirked. "Oh, he definitely will."
Grayson saluted and slid open the window. "Welp, goodnight Tony the Tiger!" He called before flying out the window.
"Don't call me-" Tiger sighed knowing it was too late. "Tomorrow will be an interesting day." He mumbled to himself.
