Prologue
Ajax Romero, 19, 100th Hunger Games Victor
The Victory Tour sucked. Especially going to Districts 3, 5, and 7. Facing the parents of the four that I had killed last was the worst. The most understanding ones were Emalynn's parents. They knew that I had apologized to her, and then had even announced it on live television.
I had to be rushed out of District 4 because someone tried to shoot me, and then people decided it would be fun to throw rocks at me. All of this because I killed Serena. Because apparently she could've survived getting seriously electrocuted.
In District 11, I was thanked by Cobalt's family for letting him into the Careers, even though Cobalt said that they would probably disown him for being gay. It was nice that they could forgive him, after he had already died. I hoped they felt bad for being so closed minded while he was still alive.
But for the most part, it was a terrible experience. The Capitol still loved me and they all wanted to take pictures with me. By the end of it, I was done with everything and just wanted to sleep in my own bed. And now, I had just been told I would be mentoring. I was hoping for at least one year of pretending the Hunger Games didn't exist. I hoped that the boy I would be mentoring wouldn't be too crazy. That would make my life a lot easier.
But for now life was normal. I lived in the Victor's village. The other victors kept to themselves mostly, so I didn't have too much interaction with them except for naming me and a girl that won a few years ago as mentors. Her name was Ally. As far as I could tell, she was pretty nice.
The Academy had asked me to come to announce the volunteers for the next Hunger Games, so I guessed that would be fun. I would get to see all of the people wanting to go into the Games, all the people I knew that were a year younger than me. The one thing I didn't want to do was mentor them. I didn't want to have to deal with the Games for a while. Or ever, but that was an impossible dream.
