Troy stood at the lectern at the end of their graduation ceremony. After his valedictorian speech, the Wildcats would have graduated from East High.
"Wildcats, we made it, senior year. I could've taken this speech many different directions but I feel this was the best. In our last six months, our music class learned a valuable lesson in our duets. That we're all in this together and to break the status quo. It's for this reason I'd like to invite Gabriella Montez to the stage to give the valedictory speech beside me."
She gasped and slowly walked onto the stage beside Troy, who winked at her as he continued speaking. "Our time at East High had been a journey, we've won, we've lost, we've learned and we've lived. We've gotten to meet and work alongside so many different people, which proves we really are all in this together. Now I'd like to talk about the girl beside me."
He turned to her, grabbing her hand and pulling her forward. "As far as you're all aware, Gabriella and I performed a duet together for our last music assignment. But I made a promise to myself that I would tell the whole school something I've been hiding. Because of my lateness, I'm going to do one better.
When you came to East High, you were the gorgeous quiet girl in the back of my home room, smart and shy. But when I got to know you better that day 18 months ago, I realised how insanely beautiful and perfect you were. It will be a shock to the school but Gabriella Montez is my girlfriend and the love of my life. And to prove that I will always love you."
He reached into his pocket for the silver promise ring and took her hand. "In from of our classmates, I promise you Gabriella Anne Montez, that with this ring, earn we're both ready, that I will ask you to be mine forever, to be my wife. So Brie, what do you say?"
"Yes." She whispered, scared her voice would break if she spoke any louder, as he slid the ring onto her finger and kissed her knuckles. She jumped into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist as he supported her thighs. "I love you so much Wildcat."
"I love you too Baby Girl, more than anything." With that said, he kissed her passionately. They were interrupted by a mixture of cheers and growls, reminding them that they were behind the podium in front of the entire school. She blushed, quickly unwrapping her legs and burying her face in his chest.
The principal spoke. "Mr Bolton and Miss Montez, congratulations though I don't approve of the previous display, please return to your seats." They silently walked back to their seats with Gabriella looking down at her feet. Principal Matsui returned to the lectern. "Congratulations to the seniors of 2009, you are now the graduating class of East High."
The students cheered and threw their caps up. All the students went to find their parents. "We're really proud of you Troy."
Lucille spoke. "I can't believe my baby boy just graduated."
"Mom." Troy whined.
"It's your graduation, I'm allowed."
He laughed and hugged them both, Jack seeing the look in his eyes. "Go on then, we'll find Gabriella and Maria."
Troy grinned at his dad before they walked to find them. Troy walked behind Gabriella, wrapping his arms around her waist and she leant into him as Maria, and now Lucille looked at the ring. "Hey Beautiful." He whispered, kissing her cheek.
"Hey Wildcat, congrats, I'm proud of you."
"Same here Baby Girl."
They turned to find their parents looking at them, smiling. "You have great taste Troy." Maria said causing him to blush, making everyone laugh. Gabriella tipped her head up and kissed his jaw before returning it to lean against the crook of his neck, looking at his parents.
"Thanks Maria, you guys aren't mad?"
They laughed before Maria responded. "Of course not Troy, you're not asking to get married immediately, you're just showing your commitment to Gabriella which is sweet."
He noticed his parents' eyes shift behind him with a hint of nervousness, he sighed. "Team's behind me, aren't they?"
"With half your grade."
"Of course, we'll deal with this."
"Do you want us to go?" Lucille asked.
"It'll be easier, Brie, you can go with them you want and I'll deal with these guys."
She shook her head. "It's both of us, we'll deal with this together."
He kissed the top of her head and their parents left, they turned to the people behind them. "What the hell are you doing Bolton?" Chad growled.
"What does it look like Chad, I'm congratulating my girl."
Before he could respond, he heard a high screechy voice trying to pull him away from Gabriella. "Troysie, this isn't funny, this dare is stupid, come on."
He shook her off and tightened his arms around Gabriella's waist. "Get lost Sharpay, this isn't a joke or a dare, I love Gabriella and I'm going to marry her."
Chad scoffed. "This is ridiculous. You were the king of East High, you had hundreds of girls willing and wanting to be with you. And you go and choose the school's biggest nerd. A loner and a loser."
"Shut it Danforth." Troy pulled Gabriella behind him, holding her close with one arm and Chad stepped towards them.
"All I can say is that you better get rid of that thing before college, 'cause you're not gonna enjoy your time at U of A if you're still with her."
He saw the others attending U of A nod in agreement. "Well it's a good thing I'm not going to U of A next year then." Everyone gasped including Gabriella and Chad did a double take as he looked disbelievingly. "That's right, I'm going to Berkeley next year so I only have to deal with you during games."
"Whatever Bolton, have fun ruining your life."
"That's where you're wrong. I don't give a damn what any of you think. You're small minded people who follow a bunch of stupid rules that don't exist in the real world. The only reason we're even talking to you right now is because we didn't want to leave high school under the facade we lived under for so long. But now that it's done, we're going to find our parents, have a nice life."
With that they walked away. After a couple minutes, Gabriella stopped Troy. "You're not going to U of A, but that's your dream."
He cupped her face in his hands. "It was but there's nothing that U of A can offer me that Berkeley can't but there's one thing Berkeley can offer me that U of A can't... you. At U of A, there's 1053 miles between us when you're at Stanford but at Berkeley, there's only 32.7 miles, but hopefully less."
She had tears in her eyes but was confused his last statement. "What do you mean?"
"Brie when we move to California, will you move in with me?"
She leapt into his arms. "Yes Troy, I'd love to."
He grinned before lifting her up and spinning her. He set her on her feet and they leant their foreheads together. "I love you Brie."
"I love you too Troy."
He kissed her softly before they walked hand in hand to tell their parents the good news.
(A.N. not really a great story, it was one of the first ones I had written so it's kinda fast and very jumpy but oh well. Let me know what you think :) )
