Maou x Emi
End.
This was it, the final showdown. The ultimate end of every story, the natural run of the course of things – the final battle between good and evil. But since the beginning of time, good always prevailed over evil.
Maou was sure that history would repeat itself. His beaten body laid on the floor. Without the other half of the celestial sword, he couldn't stand a chance. His power has long dissipated, reduced to nothing but a losing demon in this war between good and evil. With Acies forcibly removed from him, Maou was at the losing end. And the end, for him meant death. Death at the hands of the hero.
Emi... no, the hero Emilia stood at the opposite end of the room. Her celestial sword was drawn out of its sheath, its sharp blade glistened as the heavenly light hit the body, bullet of blood dropped from the sharp end. Maou struggled to speak, groaning in pain at even the smallest movements. He could sense it, the only energy that could fuel his power, or what remained of it – fear. But fear wasn't able to pull him up or increase his demonic powers, because that fear was coming from within. Maou was afraid to die.
In his mind, he saw Alciel, Lucifer, Bell, Chiho and Alas=Ramus. The memory of their smiles and laughters brought the tears in his eyes. He wanted to see them again. He wanted to live and reunite with his friends and his daughter – Alas=Ramus and… Emi. To see through their lives together. A future together.
He raised his head from the ground as a last attempt to save himself. His half-opened eyes met hers and he saw Emi's hesitation through the urging of the angels. He pulled himself off the ground, coughing blood, ignoring the pains to his side, his ribcage, his whole body. It wasn't Emi who did him good. The angels were the ones who beat him into a pulp. Emi had no help in it. All she had to do was wait until the Demon Lord was hanging on for his dear life. That's when Emi would plunge her Holy Sword and claim the victory for the 'good'. They were, after all, just puppets… pawns in this game so that people would start believing in the good again, start having hope. In the same spirit that demons grew in power from the people's fear, hope strengthened heaven's rule. The moment he stepped onto heaven he knew; he and Emi were mere pawns in this political game between the two races. Emilia, the Hero, was the face of this war after all. So, he was going to save Emi from this deadly game. He would save Emi and Alas=Ramus, for whatever price he needed to pay. Maou was going to secure his family's safety, whatever it takes.
But now, now that death was knocking on his door, Maou didn't want to answer. He wanted to live. He never knew how much he wanted to until he lived in Japan, surrounded by his friends. He wanted to live. Please let him live.
Slowly, he made his way to Emilia, his eyes begging, please let me live.
"Emi…" he croaked, words struggling to come out his mouth.
"Stay where you are, Demon King."
"Please…" Maou was inching towards the Hero who raised her Holy Wword in defense.
But even so, Emi's hand that held the Holy Sword was shaking. Emi knew how evil she must look like now, using Alas=Ramus to kill her own father. She would despise her. But this was her role, the Hero was to kill the demon. It was her duty; what she was born to do as Emilia Justina, the Hero.
Was it? Was her only life goal was to kill the Demon King?
These doubts, these questions were making the Holy Sword heavier in her hands. Something else, the feelings she has for Maou, human Maou. She wasn't sure what they were, or maybe refuses to admit the strong feelings she tried so hard to fight.
Before she could come to her own conclusion, Maou was already standing in front of her, just a few breaths away.
"Maou, what are you do–"
Maou tipped her chin and placed his bruised lips against hers. Emi was in shock, feeling Maou's cold lips brushing against hers. He didn't stop, stayed right where he was. He seemed like he was waiting for her next move.
Save me, Emi. It was his silent prayer. While not even sure about Emi's feelings about him, Maou put all his trust on Emi, on this intimate act. If his enemies see him be with the Hero, how could they keep believing he was a bad person? Didn't Emi say once… he was good to the people of Japan. There was still some good in him. Maou desperately hoped that Emi still believed in that good part of him.
And she did.
The Holy Sword dropped to the ground with a loud clink. Emi's hands, now free from the burden, snaked around Maou's shoulders. Pushing her body up against him, pulling him close, Emi returned Maou's kiss.
Because for all the times Maou saved her, his sworn enemy, Emi started believing strongly on that good inside him. It was her time now to save Maou.
He could hear the whispers and outrage around them but the Demon King didn't care. He gathered Emi's fragile frame in his arms, lips still locking, kiss deepening. As Maou held Emilia the Hero… no, as he held Emi in his arms, the whole world fell away.
Emi was the first to pull away from the kiss but only to catch her breath. Maou, still seeking the intimacy, rested his forehead on hers.
"Thank you." He whispered.
The Holy Sword reformed into the silver-haired daughter on the ground.
"Papa! Mama!"
Alas=Ramus threw her short arms around her parents' legs, embracing them as much as her arms allowed.
"I'll stand by you, Maou."
Maou knew the weight of Emi's declaration. So, once again, he allowed himself to succumb to his feelings and let his tears fall.
"Whatever happens."
And Maou finally realized, he didn't only want to be saved. He wanted Emi to save him.
…
Such a touching moment was left secured throughout and after the fight against the angels shouting as willpower for their victory and safe return to what was considered their life in Japan, not as individuals but together as one.
Maou settled at Emi's flat reliving the events that unfolded previously, flushing at the sudden movements he made with Emi, remembering how the taste of her lips on his left him breathless.
For once he can relinquish a moment because there was no such thing as demon king or hero anymore but the result of simply just Maou and Emi.
The shuffling of footsteps was heard and there was a slight dip on the couch.
"Alas=Ramus is peacefully resting now."
"I could have helped."
"Don't worry you're still recovering from your wounds anyways."
His hand met her hair swiftly sweeping rebellious pieces aside to fondle her cheek.
"You're still injured too. Take care of yourself as well or I don't know how I would act if not."
Emi's cheeks colored in red accompanied with a subtle but sweet grin leaned into his warm touch.
Ever so shyly she met his eyes.
Red meeting yellow-green pairs both lost within each other trying to peek through the surface unnoticeably both were moving closer and the gap between was getting thinner.
Emi then dove her head into his chest wrapping her arms around his neck almost mirroring a scene so similar before except with the intimacy of lovers in a comforting embrace.
"I'm so glad you're here...here with me"
Her quick but lonesome breaths touched the fabric of his shirt mixed with the dampening of light tears.
"Where else would I be? I don't feel the same around anyone else but you."
Gently, he lifted her head pulling her closer as if they weren't close enough and landed his forehead on hers noses on contact.
"Emi, after all this time in Japan, I never felt these strong emotions towards someone before. I was born and raised on the thought of conquering and killing others to move up on ranks with the sense of greed. But I've been thinking, ever since that almost quick moment of meeting death, that even though I didn't want to admit it at first, I want somebody to be there right alongside me that I can share such special memories with and wake up to see. Their face greeting me every day. Somebody for life and a purpose that makes me want to return and feel what love really means…"
He then brushed her tears which decorated her cute face and leaned to kiss her forehead.
"..and I think I found the one"
Moved by such the raw passion, Emi locked lips with Maou pouring all the turmoil experienced in her heart into the kiss, Maou doing the same in return. None of them in a hurry to separate but had limiting oxygen.
Emi then spoke up still sniffling behind her tears making her alluring voice quiver.
"Seeing you injured like that... I never want to see it again. It defeated me. There was always this strong sense of denial when it came to my thoughts of you, something I thought I could escape from and brush off as nothing. But seeing you every day made it grew more, beyond any of my expectations and gave me something that I never had before. It's decided that you won demon king, you managed to take me down and stole my heart."
Maou chuckled at her antics linking their hands together giving Emi's a light squeeze.
"You won me over too."
A smile, only met to be shown to each other, was shared between them as silence wavered both knowing what was coming next just finding the guts to say it. Then in a sudden surge–
"Emi I love you."
"Maou I love you."
–and all fell into place after words were exchanged.
…
The soothing glow of lanterns were a stark contrast to the demanding darkness that surrounded them for so long. Soft music, rather than battle cries, was a change they warmly welcomed. They were not wearing armor; just simple yukatas. Their daughter was not the powerful weapon that once stood between them; she was a happily smiling girl holding hands with her parents. They were not at war, but at peace. More importantly, they were not the demon king and the hero on battle; they were Maou and Emi on a date.
"Papa! Mama! Look! It's so pretty!"
Maou could only see Emi though. Dressed in a beautiful yukata and wearing a breathtaking smile, Emi glowed more than anything in the festival in Maou's eyes. He couldn't believe he was here, with everyone dear to him. Seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter, he was truly happy to be alive. Maou lifted up Alas=Ramus and placed her on this shoulders, the girl giggling as she hugged his head. Emi smiled lovingly at her and looked at Maou, the smile turning a little shy but never faltering. She linked her arm with his, a small blush gracing both their cheeks.
Maou glanced at Emi from the corner of his eyes, as they waited for the fireworks to start. Emi was staring at the sky expectantly, but turned to look at Maou when he grasped her hand softly in his. A small blush and a sheepish look adorned his features. "So um…this is it eh?" He laughed a little making Emi tilt her head to the side in confusion. "I've always kind of wanted to do this you know?" He tried to explain and Emi smiled at his embarrassed look.
"Wanted to do what Maou?" Emi asked, her smile in place.
"…kiss" was his muttered reply.
Emi flushed a bright red, "B-but we did that? Right?" She swiftly glanced around to make sure no one was close enough to hear them.
"Yeah, but–like you know how it always goes in movies and stuff? Go on a festival date, and then confess during the fireworks…and share an…explosive kiss…" Maou's voice became softer and softer as he went on, barely whispering the last part. Emi was flustered to the point of visibly shaking and she struggled to make coherent words. Maou grabbed her cheeks gently "…wait for the fireworks."
Three!
Two!
One!
Boom!
Maou and Emi was already kissing before the fireworks started.
But it was nothing less than explosive.
The kiss was warm and pleasant. That was what Maou thought every time he had the opportunity to kiss Emi – the person he loved. He heard the fireworks explode around him and how Emi's small hand squeezed his clothes.
He lifted one of his hands and place it on her cheek, intending to feel the warmth of her red cheeks. She felt that, with just that touch, all her past problems were slowly fading. He opened his eyes to see Emi's face, which was indeed red and was illuminated by all the colors of the fireworks. She was certainly beautiful in his eyes.
He wanted to follow that magical kiss, but they needed to breathe. She separated and saw how Emi opened her lime eyes slowly; they shone brighter than usual, which made her look much more beautiful.
He smiled and continued to stroke her cheek with his free hand.
"You look pretty blushing, Emi."
Emi was going to say something to him, but was totally silent when she saw Alas=Ramus on Maou's shoulders. She had a big smile on her face. Apparently, that sudden action made her distract from the fireworks in front of her. She was so happy that her parents are getting along with each-other so well.
As the firework show finished, their date progressed as they walk around the festival checking some stalls out.
"So what? Are we like dating now?" Emi asked Maou with the knowing smile.
"Yes, obviously!"
"Well no, that's not how it works! You have to ask me properly"
"What? After everything we have been through? Fineeee, it's not like it's a problem for me." Maou just rolled his eyes at her.
"Yay! Papa go ask mama!" Alas=Ramus clapped her hands in delight.
"Ok, ok. Urm, Emi… will you be my girlfriend?"
"Hmm… I don't know Maou, you're kind of an idiot. I need time to answer that." Emi said, teasing him. Of course, her answer was Yes, Yes, Yes! Even if he asked a billons times, the answer would be the same. She smiled to herself thinking that.
"Oh, you!" Maou just stuck a tongue at her.
Emi just laughed at him as she gave him a sweet peck, leaving him speechless as she held his hand and drag him towards the stalls.
After walking for a while, the new couple and their daughter stop at a festival stand where you had to target shoot some bottles to win a prize!
"Papa! Mama! This, this!" Alas=Ramus was amazed by this cute and big teddy bear.
"Just look at Papa!" Maou wanted to impress both Emi and Alas=Ramus. He tried to knock off the bottles but miss miserably.
"Hey! This is rigged!" Maou shouted with frustration.
Emi was just laughing at Maou but not in a mean way. She thought to herself how cute he looks trying to impress them but failing so poorly. She nudged Maou aside and coyly batted her eyelashes at him. He blushed faintly, "Er, go on."
When the gamekeeper gave her a new colorful set of hoops to throw on the bottles, Emi threw each in a flawless motion. They all came to land at the base of the farthest bottle.
"Yes!''
And so, Alas=Ramus got the big, soft teddy bear she wanted, while Maou, struck by her focus – the same as times before with the Hero – couldn't help but gush over Emi's skill.
So the little "family" walked back home, carrying the teddy bear Emi won for Alas=Ramus along with a few other exotic sweets they bought.
"Wow, it's almost 12AM." Maou checked his watch.
Even though they walked back home together many times in the past, it still felt like a fresh experience being with Emi. There were shy and awkward stares going on between them – one could actually hear their hearts pounding in the silent night.
"We're late... Hope we don't disturb anyone in the building." Emi tried not to make too much noise.
"Good thing Alas=Ramus fell asleep and merged with you on the way." Maou laughed.
"Hey Maou… So… uh... does everyone know about... you know, us yet?" Emi was still blushing within herself from the events that happened since the last night.
Hanging around Maou was not new to her; they even stayed together before. But now that they are a couple, she just could not stop blushing thinking he looks at her differently now.
"Ahh. About that…" Maou paused.
"What?! Don't tell me you're planning to hide it from them! H-how are we even going to face them in case they find out? You haven't replied to Chiho-chan too..." Emi started shaking Maou grabbing him by his collar.
"H-hey Emi, you'll wake everyone up! Calm down…" He held both her hands in his.
"Don't worry about that now… I am sure they will warm up to the idea. But, ah well… they might already have guessed" Maou replied, looking at Emi who was blushing furiously.
He could not help but think her blush was cute and he wanted to see it more often. His face heated up a little whenever he looked at her. She always had that effect on him.
"You know, Emi…"
Even on that day when they first met in the rain.
"You may not have noticed… but I had always been attracted to you."
