It was two in the morning and the house was completely quiet.
Annie stood in the kitchen, making a cup of tea. She had finished the book Mitchell had given her and was now busy filling every mug they owned with tea. She was just adding milk to her latest mug when a scream came from upstairs.
Annie dropped the mug and appeared upstairs just as George burst out of his room.
"What was that?" he asked.
Annie was about to reply when they heard another scream coming from the other bedroom.
They looked at each for a second before bursting into Mitchell's room.
Annie and George half expected to see some sort of predator when they walked in, but all they found was Mitchell - tossing and turning in his bed, sweat coating his body.
"Mitchell?" George called hesitantly, as he and Annie approached their friend. He had seen Mitchell's control slip when he was awake and coherent, he didn't really want to experience what would happen if Mitchell was just coming out of a nightmare.
"Mitchell?" Annie called as well, stepping closer to the bed. She didn't share George's fears.
"Mitchell, wake up," George said louder, still keeping his distance. He looked at Annie and shrugged helplessly.
"Mitchell," Annie turned her attention back to the man in the bed, thrashing and moaning wildly. "Mitchell, wake up!"
She laid a hand on his shoulder and the reaction was instantaneous.
Mitchell shot straight up, teeth bared and eyes black.
Despite the fact that he couldn't physically hurt her, Annie still jumped back to where George was standing.
After a moment, Mitchell's eyes returned to normal. He looked back and forth between his two friends, and his face filled with horror as he realized what had just happened.
"Oh god," he groaned, pushing himself back against the wall and burying his face in his hands.
"Mitchell," Annie said hesitantly, but Mitchell didn't look up. She moved over so she was sitting next to him on the bed and reached her arms out. Wrapping them around her friend, Mitchell buried his face in her shoulder.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," he mumbled, unable to control the tears that leaked from his eyes.
"Shhh," she hushed him, "It's okay."
Mitchell continued to sob into her shoulder and barely noticed when George joined them, sitting down on Mitchell's other side and wrapping his arm around his friend's shoulder.
"I'm so sorry," Mitchell repeated.
"It's alright," George said, "It was just a nightmare."
"It wasn't," Mitchell shook his head, "It was real. It was all real."
Annie and George exchanged a look before wrapping their arms more securly around their friend.
"We're real too, Annie whispered to him, "We're real, and we're not going anywhere. We're going to stay here with you."
That got a small, hesitant, smile out of Mitchell as he held them both close. His nightmares were filled with decades upon decades of real horrors he had faced. But here, awake in his room in the flat he shared with a werewolf and a ghost, that was also real.
Rewritten and updated in 2020!
So, first attempt at Being Human. Have an idea for a longer story, but I wanted to test the waters first. Let me know what you thought! Thanks for reading!
