Chapter 1: Black Mesa Inbound and Anomalous Materials

Accessing File: Black Mesa

Motto: "Working to make a better tomorrow for all mankind."

Black Mesa is an American research corporation whose headquarters are located in the Black Mesa Research Facility, in the New Mexico desert. It is helmed by the United States government, as the Great seal is on the ground of several lobbies of it's headquarters, and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as seen on several comlink status screens in the Black Mesa Research Facility.

Black Mesa undertakes research in various fields from standard scientific research to radiation, rocketry, theoretical physics, lasers, experimental propulsion, hydraulics, robotics, hydroelectricity, genetics, zoology, applied mathematics, and a very wide spectrum of research into chemistry and all manner of physics research. The research is mostly conducted in the Black Mesa Research Facility and includes both pure research and applied science.

In addition to this legitimate research, several secret projects are also carried out at Black Mesa, which are deliberately left vague. A large amount of classified research is carried out, including the development of high-tech weapons and defense systems, research into [CLASSIFIED], teleportation, and [CLASSIFIED]. The PA systems of the facility's tram rides states that the facility is seeking employees with backgrounds in theoretical physics, biotechnology, and various other high-tech scientific disciplines. It is also said that jobs in low-clearance security and materials handling are available. As the same announcement states, Black Mesa is an equal opportunity employer with ethnic minority employees, and employees of Faunus and Mobian heritages.

Gem of Bond: A Spiral Gem that gives its wielder the ability to teleport to anyplace through an invisible network that bonds the universe and possibly even the multi-verse together. In addition to this they are given the ability to manipulate molecular bonds of anything solid, giving them a form of telekinesis.

Xxx

The Gem of Bond was not like the rest of the Spiral Gems. Unlike the other gems this one would wander around aimlessly in the world never saying in the same place for too long. Thus, giving this Spiral Gem the perfect defense against any who would seek it out and misuse it's power. Very few can find it and those who would somehow need to look into the future to know where it would land.

And this orange colored gem was currently hovering in an old cave all by itself about to leave it, after all it's like someone is about to grab it and…

A hand reaches out and grabs the Gem of Bond. The pigmentation and size of the hand implies it's a Caucasian man and then the man disappears with the Gem of Bond.

Darklands, Sammael's Lair

Samnmael's eyes suddenly open as he jumps out of his thrown.

"Someone's taken the Gem of Bond and it's someone I'm all too familiar with." He says to himself as he clenches his fists. "I told him to stay out of this world's affairs."

It was rare to see the first of the Fallen be angry and it's only for good reason.

"Just what are you planning now?"

Black Mesa Research Facility, New Mexico

Stepping onto a train was a 27-year-old scientist, he had white skin, chestnut colored hair, a beard, green eyes, was 5'10 ft, and had glasses. This was Gordon Freeman, a MIT graduate with a Ph.D., in Theoretical Physics, a Research Associate at Black Mesa, and if theirs one thing to know about him it's that he's always running late.

He would blame it on the fact that the facility is quite large, it was the size of a town and that's mostly the areas that are underground. The real problem is that he needs to manage his time better when getting to work and according to his old MIT teacher and administrative sponsor, Dr. Isaac Kleiner they along with their friend Eli Vance are working on analyzing a crystal of unknown origin with the Anti-Mass Spectrometer in the Anomalous Materials Laboratories in the Sector C Test Lab's.

If he was lucky the tram would get him there on time.

'Good morning and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa Research facility personnel.'

Gordon sighs to himself as he's heard the PA so many times that he thinks he's memorized the whole thing now.

'The time is, 8:47am. Current topside temperature is, 93 degrees, with an estimated high of 105. The Black Mesa compound is maintained at a pleasant 68 degrees at all times.'

'I know, I know, I've heard it all the last hundred times I've had to ride the train.' Gordon thought to himself as he rolled his eyes.

'This train is inbound from, level 3 dormitories, to Sector C Test labs and control facilities. If your intended destination is a high-security area beyond, Sector C, you will need to return to the central transit hub in, area 9, and board a high security train. If you have not yet submitted your identity to the retinal clearance system you must report to Black Mesa personnel for processing before you will be permitted into the high security branch of the transit system.'

The train reaches a lobby that allows Gordon to see a window that allows him to see the desert outside before the tram starts going down to get him on the next tram rails.

'Due to the high toxicity of material routinely handled in the Black Mesa compound no smoking, eating, or drinking are permitted within the Black Mesa Transit System.'

The train reaches the tracks on the ground outside, it turns around until to make sure that it's in the right position before the tram starts moving again. As the train goes into another tunnel Gordon starts hearing the PA again.

'Please keep your limbs inside the train at all times. Do not attempt to open the doors until the train has come to a complete halt at the station platform. In the event of an emergency passengers are to remain seated and await further instructions. If it is necessary to exit the train disabled personnel should be evacuated first, please stay away from electrified rails, and proceed to emergency station until assistance arrives.'

The train comes to stop before a large sealed door. Gordon looks to his left to se a security guard in the control room press a button that opens the door allowing the train to keep moving.

'Do you have a friend of relative who would make a valuable addition to the Black Mesa team? Immediate openings are available in the areas of, materials handling, and little clearance security. Please contact personnel for further information. If you have an associate with a background in the areas of, theoretical physics, biotechnology, or other high-tech disciplines, please contact our civilian recruiting team. The Black Mesa facility is an equal opportunity employer.'

The train comes before another security door and outside the train Gordon could see a gigantic four-legged robot with pincers that Black Mesa uses to carry heavy equipment walk underneath the train as the doors open. Once opened the train goes inside before stopping in front of a fan and down going down.

'A reminder to all Black Mesa personnel, regular radiation and biohazard screenings are a requirement of continued employment in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Missing a scheduled urinalysis, or a check-up is grounds for immediate termination. If you feel you've been exposed to radioactive or other hazardous materials in the course of your duties contact your radiation safety officer immediately. Work safe, work smart. Your future depends on it.'

As this message played the tram entered a room with a container that contained radioactive waster. Gordon could tell cause the container had ruptured and it's contents were in a moat to catch it. Good thing the tram is on a rail that's attached to the ceiling and not the floor of this room.

"Great just what the facility needs." Gordon says to himself.

As the train moved forward Gordon saw two people in a separate tram. One was a scientist as evident by his lab coat and the other was a Caucasian man in a blue suit holding a briefcase in his left hand. Gordon could've sworn the man with the brief case was looking a him.

"Probably just my imagination." Gordon says as the train brings him to his destination.

'Now arriving at, Sector C test labs and control facilities. Please stand back from the automated door and wait for the security officer to verify your identity. Before exiting the train be sure to check your area for personal belongings. Thank you and have a very safe and productive day.'

A security officer approaches the door and greets Gordon. "Morning Mr. Freeman." The guard greets casually as he looks at the door's scanner causing a beep to happen. "Looks like your running late."

"I know, I know." Gordon says as he gets off the train and walks alongside the guard.

"You know, Barney's been pretty scarce around these parts." The guard says. "I guess his bar tab must have finally caught up with him."

"Must have, considering that the facility is the only place with a bar for miles." Gordon says.

"Definitely." The guard says as he and Gordon approach a locked security door. The guard goes to a console and puts in a three-digit code causing the doors to open. "Put some pep in that step Freeman."

Gordon enters a room that's observed by a security room that only has one guard. He looks through the window to get a good look at Gordon. "Ahhh man you cut the ponytail."

Gordon didn't respond to that as he watched the guard go to the console to open the next door for Freeman while saying. "Sell out."

Gordon rolled his eyes as he entered the lobby for the Anomalous Materials research group. He then goes to the center desk to see another guard and one of the other scientists.

"Hey Mr. Freeman." The guard greeted. "I had a bunch of messages for you, but we had a system crash about, I don't know 20 minutes ago and I'm still trying to find my files. Just one of those days I guess."

"Tell me about it." Gordon says with a sigh.

"They were also having some problems down in the test chamber too, but I think that's all straightened out." The guard continued. "They told me to make sure you headed down there as soon as you've gotten your hazard suit."

"Got it." Gordon says as he goes down the hallway and is greeted by a few fellow scientists.

As he goes down the hall, he ends up in the break room and is greeted by a female scientist and another guard. Gordon sees a casserole in the microwave.

"A casserole?" Gordon asked.

"Yeah, it's owner should be back soon." The guard says.

"Let me heat it up for them." Gordon says as he pushes a few buttons on the microwave. After a few seconds the casserole explodes.

"Good heavens!" The female scientist exclaims.

"What the hell!?" The guard says as he flinches before looking at the casserole and chuckles. "You think you can fix the vending machine too college boy?"

"Definitely not." Gordon says.

"We will never let hear the end of this." The female scientist says.

"Yeah you best make like and atom and split because that was you-know-whose-lunch." The guard says.

Gordon's eyes widen and he runs out the room because he did not want to have a run-in with you-know-who and that man has a very fussy, petulant nature. He makes it back into the hallway and gets to the locker room and walks past a scientist a scientist who complains about having to wear a tie at work.

As Gordon walks through the locker room he comes upon another room that has three containers, the left container and right container were both empty, but the middle container had a suit in it. It was predominately orange and some parts of it were black and on its test was the lambda symbol. Gordon presses a button on a console that opens the middle container and he puts on the suit. As soon as he puts the helmet on the Heads-Up Display (HUD) displays a message saying H.E.V. (Hazardous Environemnt Vehicle Mark IV and then the suit's onboard voice system starts talking.

Have a very safe day!

(Anomalous Materials by Crowbar Entertainment (Black Mesa Soundtrack) Ends)

As soon as the message stopped, he walks over to two panels in the wall that say H.E.V. charger. One was empty and the other was almost depleted. Gordon grabbed the nozzle of the one that was almost empty and inserted it into the charging port on his back, sending the remaining power to him, and placing it at 16% as said on his HUD. And to the left of that number displayed his vital signs at 100%. Gordon than walked to locker that had his name of it and opened it. Inside he a saw copy of his degree and what he was looking for, and extra H.E.V. battery. Once inserted this his suit was now at 31%.

'Better than nothing I suppose.' Gordon thought to himself as he activated the suits sprint mode to help him get to the lab quickly. As he made his way, he came to a security check with a guard who opened the door for him. As Gordon made his way through, he saw in another separated by glass windows a scientist are arguing with a man that looks like the same man he saw in the other tram. He even had a brief case in his left hand just like the other man.

'Is that the same guy I saw on the other tram?' Gordon thought to himself. 'Can't be theirs now way he could've gotten here before me.'

Gordon shakes off the thought and heads for the elevator down to the lab. As soon as he makes it to his floor, he uses the H.E.V. suits sprint mode again to make it to the lab's control room where he is greeted by more scientists.

"Ah, Gordon there you are." A scientist greets cordially. This was Gordon's former MIT teacher Dr. Isaac Kleiner. He was bald on the top of his head and the hair on the sides of his head was brown.

"Nice of you to finally join us doctor." A second scientist greeted coldly, clearly annoyed that Gordon is late again.

"We've just sent the sample down to the test chamber." Dr. Kleiner says.

"We've boosted the anti-mass spectrometer to 105%." A third scientist says. "Bit of a gamble but we needed the extra resolution. Some of our colleagues are against this decision"

"Administrator Wallace Breen is very concerned that we get a conclusive analysis of today's sample." Dr. Kleiner says. "I gather he went to some lengths to get it. I know Eli was ecstatic about the crystal when he got for Dr. Breen."

"They're waiting for you Gordon, in the test chamber." The second scientist said with the same attitude he displayed earlier."

"Right, come on then I'll walk you down." Dr. Kleiner says as he walks Gordon out.

"Thanks Dr. Kleiner." Gordon says.

"Please Gordon, you've known me long enough that you can call me by my first name." Isaac says as he uses the retinal scanner of a nearby door to give him and Gordon access. "Eli has been busy making last-minute preparations for the new experiment."

The two walk into the next room. To its right side were three containers that each held a ball of electricity. And at the other end of the room was a man of African descent whose hair was graying. This was 46-year-old Dr. Eli Vance, he had a beard, his right eye was brown, and his left eye was blue, and on his left hand was a wedding ring. Gordon was currently dating Eli's 24-year-old daughter Alyx, but she was currently working on getting a degree in robotics at MIT, something she wanted to get one after getting a degree in theoretical physics like her father and Gordon.

"Greetings Eli." Isaac said.

'Hi Eli." Gordon greeted.

"Morning Izzy, Gordon nice to see that you've made it." Eli greets cordially.

"I trust this morning finds you well." Isaac asks.

"I'm glad you're here Izzy, this last-minute changes they're a bit strange to-" Eli is cut off as a power box short circuits causing it's doors to open by force.

"What the heck." Gordon says.

"Oh, it's about to go critical." Eli says as him, Isaac, and Gordon race to the power box.

As Eli is working on the circuits Isaac asks. "What in the blazes is going on with out equipment?"

"Ah, it was never meant to do this in the first place." Eli says as he breathes deeply.

"It's nothing we can't handle ourselves Eli." Isaac says reassuringly. "Run along Gordon will be but a moment."

"Don't take too long on this you two." Gordon says as he goes into the elevator. As it takes him down he makes his way to enter the test lab.

He passes a scientist overlooking some data before exclaiming. "By Becquerel's ghost! The radiation levels are off the charts!"

He comes to a door to the lab entrance and is greeted by a security guard. "Ah, there you are. Everybody's been looking for you hombre."

The guard types a command into his computer to open the door allowing Gordon to enter the airlock into the room and his meet by two scientists.

"Ah here he is." The first scientist says.

"Sorry I'm late again." Gordon says to them.

"I'm afraid we'll be deviating a bit from standard analysis procedure today Gordon." The second scientist says.

Before Gordon could responds the first scientist spoke up. "Yes, yes, but with good reason this is a rare opportunity for us. This is the purest sample we've seen yet."

"And potentially the most unstable." The second scientist says.

"This won't make Black Mesa become the next Aperture Science now will it?" Gordon asked out of concern.

"Not as long as we follow standard insertion procedures everything will be fine." The first scientist says.

"I don't know how you can say that," the second scientist says before turning his attention to Gordon. "although I will admit that the possibility of a resonance cascade scenario is extremely unlikely. I just don't-"

"Gordon doesn't need to hear all this." The first scientist cuts off his colleague. "He's a highly trained professional we were sure the administrator that nothing will go wrong."

"Yes, you're right." The second scientist says conceding to his colleague's judgment. "Gordon, we have complete confidence in you."

"Thanks." Gordon says with a smile.

"Well go ahead let's let him in now." The first scientist says. Him and his colleague go to two retinal scanners and activate them opening the door for Gordon.

Gordon enters a round room and at its center was part of the Anti-Mass Spectrometer and above it was its other half. Gordon climbs up a nearby ladder and get on the catwalk above it and walks to a console that has a monitor that displays the control room.

"Testing, Testing." Isaac says over the intercom.

"Oh, right Gordon your suit should keep you comfortable through all this." A scientist says over the intercom. "The specimen will be delivered to you in a few moments. Now, if you would be so good as to start the rotors, that way we can bring the anti-mass spectrometer to 80% and hold it there until the carrier arrives."

Gordon looks at the console and presses a button causing the rotors on the top half of the deice to pop out and start spinning as the clamps on the bottom half of the deice move out of the middle of the device.

'Good job pressing that button Gordon, that MIT degree you worked so hard at getting is definitely paying off." Gordon thought to himself as after getting his degree his job at Black Mesa as been kind of menial. He looked to see that the rotors have started to glow orange.

"Very good." The lead scientist says. "We'll take it from."

"Power to stage one emitters in three…two…one." Isaac says as the rotors of the device generate an energy beam to the it's bottom half. "I'm seeing predictable phaser ease."

Gordon then climbs down the ladder and approaches a cage on the other end of the room.

"Stage two emitters activating now." Isaac says.

"Uh Gordon, we cannot predict how long the system can operate at this level, nor how long the reading will take." The lead scientist says. "Please, work as quickly as you can."

'That's good to know.' Gordon thought to himself as he started to get a little nervous after being told that.

"Overhead capacitors to 105% percent." Isaac says. "Uh, it's probably not a problem, probably, but I'm showing a small discrepancy in…well it's well within acceptable balance, again sustaining sequence."

'That doesn't sound good at all Isaac.' Gordon thought to himself. 'Even if this small discrepancy is within acceptable balance it's still a bad thing.'

"We've just been informed that the sample is ready Gordon." The lead scientist says. "It should be coming up to you at any moment. Look to the delivery system for your specimen."

Gordon turns to the cage to see a device come up with a large glowing orange crystal in it. Gordon get behind it and starts pushing it to the anti-mass spectrometer. When Gordon looked at the crystal, he could've sworn he saw something in it but it was too hard to tell.

"Standard insertion Freeman. Standard insertion." Gordon says to himself as he pushes the crystal to the energy beam. Gordon was completely nervous about this experiment, after all after everything he heard anyone would be. He was sweating fast and his breathing got deeper the closer he got to the beam. It couldn't be that dangerous. Right?

Xxx

As Eli was observing Gordon on the monitor from the power room, he didn't notice the man with the briefcase approach him from behind.

"Prepare for unforeseen consequences." The mysterious whispers to him.

Eli is started and turns around to look at the man in his green eyes. The man was grinning, and it was made al the more creepy by his wrinkly skin.

"You." Eli whispers as he recognizes him as the man who brought today's sample. Before Eli could get Kleiner's attention the mysterious man disappears right in front of him, as if he was never there to begin with.

Xxx

Gordon brings the crystal into the beam but as he steps away from it turns green and starts to shoot green energy around.

"Oh my god." The lead scientist says. "Shut it down. Shut it down! Get him out of there!"

"Shutting down." Isaac says as he realizes something. "It's not…It's not shutting down!"

"Look out!" The lead scientist says as a bolt of green energy hits the control room presumably killing him and anyone in it.

Gordon could only look on I horror at what was happening. It's like the end of the world. He looks to the crystal as something breaks out of it. It was an orange colored gem and the craziest thing is he thought that it was calling to him.

'Gordon…Freeman.'

Gordon walked toward the gem, but it seemed all right as every nerve in his body told him it was the right action to make. As he reached out to it something grabbed it. It was a clawed hand, it was pale, but it was huge, and it had three fingers and around it's wrist was some sort of manacle. The arm was coming out of a portal and it moved back into it along with the gem.

"What the hell was that?" Gordon whispered to himself as he was too shocked to describe what he just saw. Suddenly a blast of energy hits Gordon. His visions blurs and everything turns blue before he finds himself back in the test chamber, for the briefest moment it was like he wasn't in the test chamber.

Then another bolt hits him and he finds himself in a cave, but it was not like any cave he's seen. For one there was a pond of water, but the water was glowing, and it was surrounded by unusual flora. And drinking from the bond were two two-legged creatures, they appeared to be reptilian and they had tentacles around their mouths.

In another moment Gordon finds himself transported into another cave. It was a dark and only illuminated by a few bioluminescent plants. Something comes out of the shadows, some sort of alien from what Gordon could tell. It was somewhat humanoid, with two legs that were digitigrade and two arms and an additional third arm protruding from the chest. Each of their three hands only had two fingers. The creatures have mottled green-brown skin, sharp teeth, and clawed hands. Its posture was slightly hunched posture, and its face was dominated by a large eye with a maroon Sclera and a heterochromatic red-yellow iris with a yellow pupil, surrounded by three smaller eyes. It beckoned three more of its kind and they approach Freeman with curiosity and from what Gordon could tell they had some of manacles on their wrists, necks and waste.

"Ga la lung…"

"Taaar…"

"Lung gah…"

They spoke a language Gordon couldn't understand, probably their species own language. One reaches out to Gordon but as the hand reaches him, and he blacks out.
