A Distraction
I walk along the clifftops and look down at the gathering in the cove on the beach. I had seen them earlier on today, scattered along the coast—surfing, swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the last of the summer sunshine. They're now gathered back together as the day fades.
There's a bonfire; blue flames are flickering, and they're toasting marshmallows, joking and sharing stories of the day. Their laughter carries on the sea breeze, and it brings a smile to my face.
It reminds me of when I'd been sitting there around a bonfire listening to old stories—tales and legends being told of a completely different time.
I take the well-worn path to the opposite side of the cove, then jump down the last few feet onto the sand. I walk a distance away and sit myself on the beach, letting the sand pour slowly through my fingers.
I listen as the waves gently break on the shore, time and time again. The laughter can still be heard over the waves.
The breeze has cooled and my body shivers. It must be a reflex as I don't feel the cold. At all.
Daylight is slowly fading. It's almost twilight.
It brings with it more memories.
I think back.
I remember.
I remember him.
I remember us.
"You're human—your memory is no more than a sieve. Time heals all wounds for your kind."
So long ago, yet, I still remember those words. Everything.
Him.
Them.
Us.
Even though I'm no longer that kind.
Maybe because I'm now a different kind.
His kind.
"My world is not for you," he'd warned.
Before he left me.
I hear footsteps rapidly approaching, and before I can react, I'm tackled from behind and rolled onto my back in an instant.
"Gotcha!" He laughs down at me, eyes shining brightly.
His laugh is infectious, and I can't help but laugh along with him.
Our cold bodies pressed so closely together. He leans down and places a gentle kiss to the tip of my nose. Such a human thing to do, even though we're not.
"Wanna go scare some white pointers with me?"
He always knows when I need a distraction.
I'd been one once. A distraction.
"… we're very easily distracted."
He was right about that.
He's so much bigger than me, but I push him up and away easily.
Everything is easy for me now.
"Race you," I call out as I blur away from him faster than the human eye could see.
Garrett catches up to me quickly, and we dive headlong into the waves together.
He'd been wrong about one thing.
This world is for me.
I'd found my place to shine.
I was meant to be a vampire.
