Chapter 3: Seth
"That was weird," Nessie said once we were in the car.
"Very," I agreed. "They kept staring at us like we were aliens with three heads or something. You'd think they'd never seen or heard of identical twins before,"
"Maybe it's my imagination but I don't think they believed us when we said we were identical twin sisters," she said once we were about half way home.
"I'm sure that's not the problem. It's not like they're going to automatically think one's an identical clone of the other. Human cloning is illegal. Besides most people think human cloning is pure science fiction anyway,"
She shook her head. "You're right. I'm way overthinking this," she said. "Sometimes I worry though that someone will figure out the truth,"
"Nessie the lie has been working for years. Why are you worried? What are you worried about?"
"You mean besides mom and dad getting thrown in federal prison for the rest of their lives? I worry about what will happen to you. What if they take you away and experiment on you or something?"
I felt a lump in my throat. Truthfully that was something that I'd always worried about also. I always pushed my fears to the back of my head. But the fear was always there. What would happen to me? Would the government take me away and experiment on me for the rest of my life? It was illegal to force someone to stay somewhere against their will. But would I have the same rights granted to everybody else? There were no laws that granted clones the same rights as normal natural born human beings.
"You okay Nessa?" she asked. I could see the concerned look in her eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you,"
"No you didn't," It was a lie and I was sure she knew that. But I do know that she never meant to upset me. "You just voiced my worst fears. That's all. But I don't think anyone suspects anything,"
She started laughing. "They were a weird bunch. They didn't even say anything when we walked out the door,"
I started laughing along with her. Leave it to my sister to find a way to break the tension. "So how was that date of yours?"
"Too short," she sighed. "They always are though. He always has to leave early to go somewhere,"
"I'm sure he has a different excuse each time,"
"Hey I'm just looking out for you. I don't want you to get hurt. I really think you can do so much better then some stupid football player,"
"Some stupid football player? You do realize he's the best player on the team, right?"
"Just because he's a good football player doesn't mean he's a good person. You're his girlfriend and he flirts shamelessly with all the cheerleaders and just about any good looking girl that crosses his path. Don't you find that just a little bit disrespectful?"
"How did this conversation turn to Derek once again?" she sounded irritated now. Nessie would probably never admit it in a million years but I think she knew that I was right. She just didn't want to see it or accept it for reasons that I did not understand.
We didn't say anything for the rest of the drive. As soon as we got home she went to her bedroom and I went to my own. I watched TV for a little while before deciding to go to sleep. I woke up the next morning feeling well rested. Nessie and my parents were still asleep so I snuck into the kitchen quietly and threw some frozen waffles into toaster. As I made my breakfast I tried to make plans for the day. Nessie had a baseball game. After that she was probably going to hang out with her friends at the mall.
"Yum what's that I smell?" Nessie yawned as she walked into the kitchen.
"Is there still any left for me?"
"So Nessa what are your plans for today?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "Maybe I'll just go to the library and check out some new books. Then after that I don't know. I'll figure it out afterwards. What about you? You have a baseball game today don't you?"
"Yes at 10. I'll probably go have lunch with the team afterwards,"
"Good luck later," I said.
I left for the library around the same time that she left for her baseball game. Since my car was in the shop I had to walk all the way to the library. Luckily the library was only two blocks away from my house. I was always in my happy when I was looking for books to read. I pulled a few books off the shelf in the science section and sat down at a table to read.
Awhile later I suddenly got the feeling that I was being watched. I tore my eyes away from the book and looked around. I was surprised to find Seth standing a few feet away from me. I couldn't help but smile. I hadn't said more then a few sentences since I'd first met the guy at school but something about him made me happy.
He stared at me curiously without saying anything. Maybe he was just shy. That's okay. I thought shy boys were pretty cute in their own way. "Hi Seth," the grin on my face got bigger.
"I'm Vanessa. But just call me Nessa,"
"So you're the one who was at school yesterday weren't you. It was also also you that was at the house last night. Not Nessie,"
"What? How did you-I mean what?" How had he figured it out? I was so shocked I didn't know what to say.
"I just know," he said. "Why did you pretend to be Nessie?"
"Okay I guess the jig is up. She asked me to switch places with her for the day. Don't ask why though. It's secret,"
"Well do you mind if I get to know you? The real you?"
"I-well-I mean yes!" People looked at me in irritation at my outburst. I blushed bright red. "But maybe a library is not the best place to talk,"
"So let's leave," he offered.
"Okay just give me a few minutes to check out these books,"
I was I so giddy all of a sudden? It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that a really beautiful guy like Seth wanted to talk to me now. Could it? Okay yes that was totally the reason. I couldn't lie to myself.
"So you and Renesmee are identical twins?" he asked me once we were out of the library.
"Last time I checked,"
"Since when?" he asked.
"Um since birth?" I responded. "Dude why are you asking such weird questions?"
"Nothing. No reason," he said. "So Nessa do you want to go get something to eat?"
"Would that make this a date?" I blushed again feeling super embarrassed that the question had even passed my lips.
"Yes. It would be. I'd like to date you," he said. My instincts told me he was telling the truth.
"Are you sure it's not Nessie that you want? I mean you thought I was her all day yesterday,"
"No it's you that I want. But I happen to know that Jacob is interested in dating your sister. Very interested,"
"She unfortunately has a boyfriend," I rolled my eyes when I said 'boyfriend' .
"Ohhh Jacob's just going to love hearing that," he grimaced.
"Well tell Jacob not to let that one little inconvenience stop him from trying,"
"Sounds like you don't like her boyfriend,"
"I don't. He's a total piece of shit scumbag but she just doesn't see that yet. Excuse my language but I cuss sometimes,"
"Oh that doesn't bother me. And believe me when I say that Jacob Jacob won't let that one little inconvenience stop him. He's very persistent when he wants something,"
"So where do you want to go eat?" he asked.
"Anything sounds good to me. So you decide,"
"Well I'm new to the area and don't really know what's good around here,"
"Well we could always go to my favorite diner. They have really good burgers, pizzas, milkshakes and a lot of other good stuff,"
"That all sounds good because I'm starving,"
It was busy by the time that we arrived since it was lunch time. That did nothing to dampen mine or Seth's spirits though. We started asking each other a lot of questions to fill the time as we waited to be seated and when we were waiting for our food later on. I didn't even think it was possible to have so many questions to ask someone.
We would've kept on talking if my sudden need to use the restroom had not interrupted. I was walking back to our table something happened. I heard a loud scream as I passed by the kitchen and the most delicious scent hit my nose at full force. My throat erupted in flames. The smell made my throat burn worse.
Around me I could see people coming to the aid of a man who'd accidentally cut his hand while cutting vegetables. The smell was coming from him. I could tell. It was his blood. It made my throat feel like it was on fire.
"Nessa are you okay?" Seth's burning hot touch snapped me out of it. I shook my head.
"Yeah I'm fine,"
I shook my head. The burn in my throat still strong. But I knew if I got away from the smell it would get better. This strange phenomenon was not the first of it's kind. The first time happened four months ago when I'd come across a woman who fell of her bike and scraped her knees. I didn't understand what was happening to me. I I didn't tell anyone about it. Not even Nessie whom I'd never kept secrets from before.
What was happening? Was this happening to me because I was a clone? If so why did it take so many years to happen?
I did not have the answers.
