Twister sat silently in the cabin with Otto and Sam for what felt like an eternity. He stared out the window, seeing the snow-covered road but no car.
Please let her be okay, he silently prayed.
It had been a few hours since the accident. They had all been so excited to go on the next run and Reggie forgot to buckle the strap on her helmet. A kid fell down in front of her an she quickly had to swerve to miss him. She ended up on an ice-patch and she fell and hit her head. Twister couldn't shake the memory of seeing all the blood. Raymundo and Tito took her to the hospital and the others hadn't heard anything since.
"I'm sure she'll be fine," Sam said feebly.
Otto didn't even look up, he just continued staring at the wall. Twister nodded, hoping Sam was right. He looked out the window and saw the car pulling up.
The boys rushed out the door and Reggie stepped out of the front seat. She had a cut on her forehead that had a few steri-strips on it but it didn't seem too bad. Otto was the first to go up and hug her.
"Aww, were you worried about me?" she teased her brother.
"Maybe a little," he smiled. "I'm glad you're okay."
She turned to Twister who was staring at her with a worried expression. She smirked and tilted her head to the side as she walked towards him. "Let me guess, you too?"
Twister nodded and hugged her, never wanting to let her go. She put her hand on his cheek. "Hey," she looked into his eyes, trying to reassure him. "I'm okay."
Then she kissed him. He momentarily forgot everything as he kissed her back, feeling a whirlwind of emotions. When she pulled away, he was brought back into reality. He felt everyone staring at him so he looked down at the ground, avoiding any eye contact. Through his peripheral vision, he could see the angry look on Otto's face as he glared towards him. Reggie didn't seem to notice anything and made her way over to Sam, who was still staring at Twister with a bewildered look.
"Hi, I'm Reggie," she extended her hand and it took Sam a minute to catch up.
"Sam," he said, shaking her hand.
"Okay," Raymundo intervened, also snapping out of the sight of Reggie kissing Twister. "Tito, why don't you take Reggie inside? We'll be right in."
As soon as the door shut, Otto lunged towards Twister and Raymundo and sam jumped in to try to stop him.
"What do you think you're doing kissing my sister?" he asked angrily, trying to break free from his dad.
"She kissed me! I didn't know she was going to do that!"
"She's got amnesia!" Raymundo told him and he stopped fighting. "She doesn't remember."
"Or did you miss the part where she had no idea who I was?" Sam remarked.
"She probably didn't remember who I was either," Twister said, trying to help. "Why else would she have kissed me?"
Sam looked skeptical. "I think she remembered you, Twister. Confabulation is a normal side effect of amnesia."
"It means she's constructed false memories, ie: the two of you dating."
"But you're not," Otto confirmed.
"Look," Raymundo started. "Her amnesia is temporary. The doctors think it'll wear off in a couple of days. The problem is her short-term memory isn't great right now either so she doesn't remember she has amnesia. She was pretty upset when she found out because there's nothing she can do to control it. I think it's probably better if we don't tell her again."
The boys nodded and agreed. Thankfully, Otto seemed to be past the point of wanting to hurt Twister but he still looked angry.
When they walked in the cabin, Reggie and Tito were in the kitchen stirring hot chocolate. They walked over and Reggie handed Twister the mug.
"Um, thanks," he said.
She picked up her mug and took a sip, putting her arm around Twisters waist as she turned to Sam. "So Sam," she started. "I feel like I know you from somewhere I just can't place it. Are you a friend of Twister's?"
Sam choked on his hot chocolate and coughed a few times before answering. "Yeah, I'm Twister's friend."
Twister watched Sam try not to laugh to himself. Although he was trying to avoid physical contact by holding his mug with two hands in front of him, he could feel Otto's eyes glaring at Reggie's hand around his waist. He didn't dare look up. His mind was torn between worrying about Otto's anger and the heart-flipping feeling he was getting as he felt Reggie's arm around him, sensations filling his body.
"Are you coming snowboarding with us tomorrow?" she continued her conversation with Sam.
Her dad answered. "No. We're not going snowboarding tomorrow. We're going home, remember?"
She gave him an incredulous look. "We just got here."
"Actually," Tito interjected. "We've been here since Sunday."
Raymundo picked up where Tito left off. "And we're only cutting the trip short by one day."
"Why are we cutting it short in the first place?" Reggie asked.
"Um, you sort of fell," Twister answered hesitantly. She looked at him while he spoke and with her arm still around him, he was distinctly aware of how close their faces were.
"Oh," she looked like she wanted to remember. "Right."
There was a brief silence and then Tito (who had been flipping through channels) announced, "look, The Hidden Basement is on."
"I haven't seen that in years," Raymundo made his way towards the chair.
"Ooh, it's at the part where they find the skeleton," Otto commented as he sat down.
Reggie sat next to Twister on the couch and leaned against his chest. He felt like he should wrap his arm around her but he wasn't entirely sure of what to do and he didn't want Otto to glare at him anymore so he just rested it on the back of the couch.
"Turn it up," Reggie told Tito.
The movie was a helpful distraction for most of them and Twister was glad that Otto was paying more attention to the movie than to the two of them. Twister, however, was struggling to pay any attention to the movie while Reggie was cuddled up with him.
