Chapter One: Past To The Present

Karin, the Duchess de La Vallière sighed. It was the day of her third daughter's second year springtime familiar summoning ritual. Louise reminded Karin far too much of a certain girl in her memories. It made her intolerably worried. Thinking back to when she was five. That was the day she had lost her older sister, and was instilled with the rule of steel.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Karin's father Lord Désirée de Maillart was a somewhat overbearing man. He believed that it was the nobles job to be as best as they could possibly be for their country of Tristain, despite any hardships one might have to endure. This idea would eventually lead to the creation of the rule of steel. Despite being overbearing he loved his two daughter's very much and doted on both of them.

His eldest was currently away at Tristan Academy of Magic. And this is what worried the lord. His eldest daughter had a slight problem with her magic. It exploded, over and over again. Despite hiring the best tutors, making her practice before going to the academy it seemed she was still a dud. The young professor Osmond had reassured him that he could some how help the young girl and kept reassuring him. But despite this he worried still, and kept hoping that the Academy would help her channel her magic.

After all, he loved that little short pink haired Girl. "Genkai, please don't fail on your last chance. Please summon a powerful familiar."

At this time another pink haired five year old was worried. Her father acted very worried since he sent her elder sister back to school. Little Karin loved her sister dearly. She always made things go boom, and she played with her. And so her worry was extreme to the point it fed into her own father's worry.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Osmond, the young professor of Tristain's Academy of magic, got off his horse. Garbed in the Academy's standard blue vestments. Held in his hand was a box made of fine wood. Slowly he made his way to Lord Désirée de Maillart's home. It was quite large and showed off the fine taste of a well of Noble. Of course such things were not on Osmond's mind. Even his mouse familiar Chu Chu seemed sad upon his shoulder.

Approaching the house he spoke as he knocked on a large wooden door. "It is Professor Osmond from the Academy my Lord Desirree. I have come bearing news of your daughter."

The lord got up from his living room where he has been enjoying his tea as he watched Karin play with a Sparkler wand. As he arrived one of his servants had already opened the door for the young professor. Of course as fellow noble it would be rude to leave him standing at the door, so the servants had guided the young man Osmond to a sitting room nearby the entrance.

"Professor Osmond, what brings you here, surely anything involving my daughter could have simply involved a letter instead of your physical presence." He paused a moment. "Has my daughter caused trouble for the school, perhaps she has destroyed another classroom?"

Osmond sighed as he placed the box on the table between them. "I'm afraid I've come barring terrible news." He paused as the Lord seemed to react by gripping his chair nearly cracking it with his strength. "As you know three days ago was the second year annual familiar springtime summoning ritual."

The Lord tried to reply, hoping to banish the new he was afraid that would come, but instead Osmond continued, not allowing have another word. "As you can imagine we were all quite worried with young Genkai's previous performances with magic." Scene's of explosions went through the lords mind. "I'm afraid during her summoning their was a large explosion. When the smoke cleared from the crater from where she stood, all we found was this."

As Osmond opened the case between them, the lord gasped at the charred black wand. "I am sorry for your loss."

Karin had snuck past her personal maid to find out was worrying her father. Eventually she hid behind he fathers chair. She listened to the adults in secret. As they talked she grew more worried for he sister. Karin dropped her sparkler wand as Osmond Spoke. "I'm sorry for your loss." Karin Screamed for her elder sister. Karin was broken.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Some time had passed, Father and daughter were in mourning. All they had to bury was a wand. An unmarked grave would be its resting place. "Karin you are never to speak of your elder sister. To do so would be political suicide to have such a failure in our line." He said through tearing eyes. "You will follow rules, and become a noble that upholds the values of nobility." He paused as he tightened his grip on Karin small feeble hand. "Become like steel, unwavering, dedicated, and a true noble without any faults."

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Genkai was getting old. Master of the Spirit wave, and bogey man to demons and apparitions. She had built much, established a compound, fallen in love, and the only thing she lacked was an inheritor. Of course its safe to say she wasn't getting any younger, despite what happens when she used her Spirit Wave technique. She had done much in her life since the day she arrived in Japan. Of course when she first arrived she was nothing but a clueless young girl.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Arriving in a explosive blast, Genkai coughed soot from her mouth. She was in a large forest, disgusted by the smells and soot now all over her. Yet she was still confident due to her noble upbringing. She didn't know where she was, perhaps somewhere beyond Rub' al Khali.

She trudged her way through the forest until she saw a shadow move in the woods. "Who's there!" She yelled as she tried to find her missing wand.

A dark blue Humanoid approached from the shadows. He had pointed ears.

Any form of confidence that Genkai had was lost in that moment. "Elf!" She screamed as she attempted to run away.

"I'm Baldok! And you will be my dinner!" The demon cackled as he ran after the young Tristain mage.

"Why did it have to be the eleven lands." Genkai thought as she ran straight of a cliff into a raging river. She tried to stay afloat but soon she was loosing her vision as she kept swallowing water.

Baldok flew over the river looking for the young pink haired snack but saw no signs of her.

As Genaki came too, she found herself wrapped in a large comfortable bed. She seemed to have a wet cloth on her head and was weak all over. But there she saw a young man her age. He seemed to be a peasant and wearing some weird garb. Despite this, she most likely owed this commoner her life.

"Thank you" Genkai said meekly.

"French?" The young man muttered. "Your lucky to have survived nearly drowning and a demon attack you know." The young black haired teen said.

"Whats your name?" Asked the young Genkai.

The young man stood up from his chair. "I am a martial artist that hunts demons, and my name is Toguro. Welcome to our dojo." He said as he slid open a tatami mat door, thus revealing a large hall with several other martial artists practicing.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Letting her memory fade out of her mind, she finished her Tea. She hopped out of her old van, cane still in her other hand. Today she was in the city with a purpose. In front of her their was a arcade that was liquidating its old arcade machines. "I hope they still have the models I wanted for my little test I have planned." she cooed.

Despite her old age, Genkai was quite an avid gamer, but today she was not here for that. The test she had planned demanded special arcade machines that could test a persons spiritual power. Of course it would take a few years to setup, but again, she was not getting any younger. Someone most inherit her spirit wave technique.

After purchasing a few machines, Genkai found the two boys that were supposed the load them into her van. The first one seemed fairly weak and wore a blue hoodie, his name was Saito. The other seemed to be some young middle school boy brat named Yusuke. He appeared to be a ruffian and complained how he was being forced by his mother to help out at the arcade. He had apparently destroyed some the arcade's owners arcade machines in a fight.

When the final arcade machine was loaded into her van. The young man named Saito was panting on the sidewalk. "Good Job kid!" She slapped him in the back. "I honesty didn't think you were strong enough to lift that machine by yourself."

The boy bowed to the old woman. "Yeah, thank you. But how are you going to offload them?" The young boy asked.

Genkai looked at him. "While I'll unload them young man."

"Like that old hag can. She can barely walk, just look at her cane." Said the young Ruffian boy Yusuke.

Genaki just stared at the boy as she dropped her cane and lifted the van with the hand behind her back with ease. "Run Slacker." She stared at Yusuke who promptly fled after pausing to stare into her eyes.

"Damn you old Hag, I'll remember you!" Said the running teen.

"Wow, just wow!" Said the other boy Saito. "Your super strong!"

"Just takes a lot of training kid." Genkai stated.

Saito was about to speak again when a buzzing sound fizzled to life behind him.

Genkai stared in horror as what appeared to be a portal started to form behind the young boy. Portals were very bad in this day and age, especially in cities which were warded by King Koenma, portals to the demon world could spew endless amounts of demons. Of course only C class and below ranked demons could traverse past the kekkai barrier, but a C demon could still level a city. Koenma could of course deploy the SDF "Spirit Defense Forces", but even they could only seal a barrier such as this one in a few hours.

Pushing the boy away, Genkai made the conscious choice to enter the portal and hold off the demons until the SDF or a Spirit Detective could arrive.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Today was Louise's big moment. The day she either proved that she was a mage, or a zero. She wanted to summon a powerful familiar like her mother Karin the Heavy Wind's Manticore. Of course at this point she would settle for her magic working at all. Constantly cursed with explosions at every turn, the jeers of her fellow classmates, and her mothers expectations. The rule of steel was a mantra Louise kept saying over and over in her head as her waited her turn.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Professor Colbert was expecting the worst. It was only a few days prior that Old Osmond had recounted the tale of Louise's aunt. As someone that had personally served with Karin the Heavy Wind in the Tristain Army, Colbert didn't want to have to follow in Osmonds foot steps. Colbert even liked the studious pink haired noble, but having to inform Karin of today, should things go wrong, wasn't a very pleasant thought. He had done everything in his power to mentor the poor child, he believed she knew more about magic principles then any of the teachers including himself. Of course he knew only one student had yet to summon her familiar.

Sighing inwardly he spoke to his class. "Has anyone not yet summoned their familiar?"

"Professor Colbert, Louise hasn't gone yet." Said a fiery red headed noble woman by the name of Kirche Augusta Frederica Von Anhalt Zerbst.

"Louise please perform the ritual summoning." Said Colbert with hope.

"Yes professor." She called to him as she proceeded to speak the incantation. The runic arrays she had setup in the field glowed as her willpower fueled the spell.

At first Colbert thought the spell was performing perfectly. Then he saw the signs, the runic formula was overloading. "Get down!" He yelled to the class as the runic array exploded.

Covered in soot, Louise stared ahead into the smoke filled crater that had been her runic array she had setup for weeks. There in the clouds she saw a figure. "I summoned my familiar!" She yelled.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Genkai once again found herself ground zero for a blast, it was nostalgic. She braced herself to fight off any possible demon attacks, she knew where sure to come. Then she heard some impossible words. "That's not possible she thought, that's the language Tristain."

Genkai forced some spiritual power out around her clearing the smoke. What she saw dumbfounded her to silence. She had returned, the Magic Academy she never thought she'd see again. Not even with Koenma's help. It stood stock in front of her, arrayed with students and their familiar's, and of course a very familiar looking girl. "Karin!" She spoke loudly in disbelief.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Louise and the other students were very puzzled, especially Louise. Their in front of them as the smoke cleared was an old peasant commoner woman dressed in filthy soot covered rags. But the weirdest of all was that the old lady had looked at her and called her by her mothers name. "Who are you!" Louise demanded as she stared at the old woman.

Genkai decided to answer the Karin look a like's question. "My name is Genkai Désirée de Maillart."

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Colbert was white as ghost, meanwhile Old Osmond who had been watching the proceedings from his office, thanks to his trusted familiar Chu Chu knocked over his tea, and dropped his tobacco pipe. "Whats the matter Osmond?" Asked the Secretary Mrs. Longueville in concern.

*Chapter One: Past To The Present*

Koenma flipped a switch on his archaic remote. A large screen went dim as he did so. "So Genkai, you finally managed to return home. It's unfortunate that I can not help you anymore. But trouble will follow you." He thought. "Orgre!" He said to no particular member of his staff.

"Yes sir!" Said the blue Ogre in a loincloth who was currently holding a large stack of papers.

"We have finally discovered where the random portals that were abducting apparitions were going to."

"Where Sir?" Said the blue ogre as he sat down the paper work on the desk.

"My Father's brother's domain. Halkeginia." Koenma than looked over to the stack of papers in fright.
