Chapter One:

Lower Still

Haelyra Potter

I.

A shuddering breath, a sharp inhale and arrest, and only then does Haelyra's head sink down into the still and silent waters. The water does not fight her invasion, it greets her with a calm and cool embrace. Lower yet Haelyra lapsed, lower still she sinks, down into the deep, down into the dark, down into the quiet.

The world made sense down there, in the silence, in the water. The sea was not an unyielding beast, though it had its own tempers and rages, it could be soft and soothing, and it never stopped you from entering its hold. The sea stretched, and rivers ran, and streams would go where streams went.

Running water wears away the stone.

Sirius had told her that. Running water wears away the stone, stars are brightest in the darkest of nights, remember you are half water and half star shine, and don't you ever forget that. Haelyra had not, not once, not ever, and so, with the stars above her head, down she sinks into the Black Lake.

The war had been over for more than a month now, and only this night, only in these waters, does Haelyra feel she can think clearly. The waters echo her moods, and in turn she feels them deep, spun silvery at dawn as Haelyra is hopeful, olive at noon as Haelyra is hectic, murky indigo in the evening when she begins to feel tired to her bones, and the darkest of blacks at night when the nightmares come.

That morning, as the sun, amongst uncountable in the cosmos, crested over the Forbidden Forest, the Black Lake had been an almost red, a burnished thing rolling to the colour of old pennies. It had reminded her of Lavender Brown's blood spattered on flagstone, smeared across the snarling mouth of Fenrir Greyback.

Haelyra sinks deeper into the waters.

She has to.

Her anger is a bit like the sea, she thinks. Sometimes it flows like a river, through her, between her fingers and her teeth to spill onto the shores of other's mouths and minds, and that was fine, that was natural, that was human. Yet sometimes it was a remote thing, a pond, something left to stagnate and spoil into hatred, water gathered into one place and left to forget. Her anger, like stagnant water, becomes filthy, fetid, fatal.

So she sinks into her waters, and she lets her anger flow, and she makes the Black Lake a little more salty with her tears, a little less silent with her screams, and a little more hideous with her sobs.

Running water wears away the stone, stars are brightest in the darkest of nights, remember you are half water and half star shine, and don't you ever forget that.

She tries, by Merlin she tries, she hopes Sirius knew that, wherever the Veil had spirited him away. She was like her water, floating in times of pain, and dancing like tides on shore. She is like her stars, bright when there was no reason to shine, burning and spinning and shooting in the dark. But even the seas need to break on beaches, and stars need days to sleep, and Haelyra Potter needs to run.

Stagnant water spoils.

Her lungs begin to burn down in the dark, and only then does she begin to kick towards the surface.

She breaks the black edge with a gasp, sodden, cold, free.

And that was how she decided.

Right there.

One breath in, salt water peppering her lips as sweet as taffy, hoary hair snagged with seaweed, Haelyra knew she was leaving.

A.N: Just a little taster. I hope you all liked it! This fic is set after all books of Harry Potter, and Pre GOT during the Dance With Dragons. It will have a heavy Velaryon focus, as well as Targaryen, and a dash of House Dayne too.
