Chapter 3: Let's hit the road
The time came for their departure.
Two sets of cars were there: both big black SUVs looking sleek. Shiki's barrier was still around the house, in case the AAO decided to come for Jii-Chan. Everyone was eager to get back to the academy because Mikan was back with them, but none was more excited than Natsume.
The four years of not being able to see her lovely smile, of smelling her tangerine scent, of having her sit with him in class with her annoying - now amazing - voice. One of his worst fears was Mikan finding a new boyfriend. It was Ruka who had assured him, just the night before, that it was Mikan they were talking about, who didn't find love easily, being as dense as she was. And it was Ruka who knew how he was feeling, which Natsume was eternally grateful for as he knew Ruka still had feelings for her and was a rival as well as (Ruka advising him how Mikan will be upset if he were to set her new boyfriend in flames, not that Natsume would care because Mikan was his).
Everyone was now watching the scene in front of them, their chests clenching at the heart-breaking look on her face. Mikan had made a special place in all their hearts ever since she stepped in the Academy, following her best friend, all those years ago.
"There, there, Mikan, it will be all right. Don't forget you can always write your letters to me, right?" Jii-Chan patted her head to comfort his granddaughter.
"Mmm." Mikan looked up, drying her tears, and giving her signature million-dollar smile. The lovely sight made Natsume and Ruka blush, hiding their eyes behind their bangs. The seniors, who saw this, snickered, which made Mikan tilt her head to the side cutely in confusion. The boys gave the seniors death glares, which made them shut up.
Once everyone was in the cars, dividing the seniors into one while Natsume, Ruka, and Mikan sat in the other, there was an awkward silence, apart from Mikan's sniffles. Natsume, who couldn't bear to see her cry anymore, hugged her to the side, his bangs covering his eyes. Mikan smiled.
Aside from Natsumes's height, he hasn't changed, she thought. Enjoying his presence, she allowed herself to relax, snuggling underneath his arm. It felt… peaceful. For a long time, she had felt the absence of an unknown lover, a feeling that made her reject all of the boys who had confessed their love to her at school. Now, she knew: it was Natsume.
Inside the car, it was tranquil, as they drove for miles and miles. After such an action-packed day, all three of them let the gentle whirring of the car lull them to a pleasant sleep.
Suddenly, there was an explosion.
Mikan shrieked, and Natsume gritted his teeth as he held Mikan tight to him.
Ruka woke up in a startle and the other car came to a stop with the harsh brake. Natsume shouted angrily, "What the hell is going on?!"
