So far Away

Ezra was... Lost. He knew where he was, of course, he was in the cave that served as the new rebel base on Lothal. But he was lost in his head, his emotions, his overpowering grief.

Kanan was... gone.

He could still hear Hera's scream of despair. He could smell the igniting fuel from the depot. He could still picture Kanan, his master, his friend, his second father, standing on top of the exploding depot, sacrificing himself for them.

And it hurt.

He wrapped his arms around his knees and rested his head on them. Ezra wished he could just roll into a ball and hide from the world, hide from the pain. Hide from his grief. He felt alone, so alone, like he'd been for eight years before he had met the Ghost crew.

Before he'd met his new family.

But now, his family was torn apart. Kanan was gone. Hera's resolve, the one thing he knew he always , they always, could rely on, was shattered. Zeb and Sabine had gone off doing Force knows what.

And Ezra was alone.

A single, silent tear slipped down his cheek. He told himself he shouldn't cry, he couldn't cry, he had to be strong for the others. But he couldn't. His body refused to listen to him, his mind filled with grief.

He felt something on his back. He lifted his head, and looked at the cause of the disturbance. Sabine. He quickly wiped his arm over his eyes, drying them. Sabine sat down behind him, her back against his.

"Hey" she said.

"Hey" he answered back, his voice rough.

They sat in silence, lost in their own thoughts, that, no doubt, often dwelled on the same subject.

He and Sabine where similar, in some aspects. They'd both faced many hardships in their young lives. They where separated by only a two year age difference. They both relied on themselves, preferring being alone over being vulnerable in moments like this. And that is how they came together.

It first started when Sabine's shell had cracked on Atallon, where she'd told how she had been abandoned by her family. After that moment, they where often found together. Sometimes, they sparred together to distract themselves. Sometimes, they would talk, about their missions, their past, or something that was bothering them. And sometimes, they just sat, soothed by the company of the other.

Such as today.

"Do you want to talk?" Sabine asked.

"Not really" Ezra answered.

And thus, they didn't, and silence swallowed them once again.

And then, he heard something. A soft, gentle humming. And then, a voice.

"never feared for anything.

Never shamed but never free.

A light that healed the broken heart with all that it could."

"Lived a life so endlessly.

Saw beyond what others see.

I tried to heal your broken heart with all that I could.

Will you stay, will you stay away forever?"

The voice sang gently. And beautifully. The voice was shaky, filled with grief, but that only added to it's beauty.

"How do I live, without the ones I love?

Time still turns the pages of the book it's burned.

Place and time, always on my mind.

I have so much to say but you're so far away."

Ezra turned his head, looking at the source of the voice. Sabine's eyes met his. Her voice wavered for a moment, before it continued. He could feel her grief through the force as she allowed herself to feel it, to be vulnerable. Ezra took as much of it as he could, releasing it into the force.

"Plans of what our futures hold.

Foolish lies of growing old.

It seems were so invincible, the truth is so cold."

"A final song, a last request.

A perfect chapter, laid to rest.

Now and then I try to find a place in my mind

Where you can stay, you can stay awake forever"

Silent tears dripped down Ezra's cheeks as he listened to her gentle song. She turned around, wrapping her arms around his chest, pressing his back to herself. She continued her song, and he continued to release her grief.

"How do I live, without the ones I love?

Time still turns the pages of the book it's burned.

Place and time, always on my mind.

I have so much to say but you're so far away."

"Sleep tight, I'm not afraid.

The ones that we love are here with me.

Lay away a place for me.

Cause as son as I'm done, I'll be on my way.

To live, eternally."

The words where replaced by humming, Sabine's tears joining Ezra's. Hera sat down next to them, resting her back against them both. Ezra also took her grief, letting the force fill all three of them as the emotions faded.

"And the light you left remains, but it's so hard to stay.

When I have so much to say and you're so far away."

She chocked on a sob, tears still dripping down her face. Hera wrapped her arms around the both of them, then continued singing in absence of Sabine's voice. Ezra hummed along as he continued to release their shared emotions.

"I loved you, you where ready.

The pain is strong enough despite.

But I'll see you, when It let's me.

Your pain is gone, your hands are tied."

Sabine's voice joined hers once again, her grief almost gone.

"So far away.

And I need you to know.

So far away.

And I need you to need you to know."
