Chapter 01 - From Quirks to Science
[Rewritten on August 19, 2021]
It started as just another afternoon at the UA dorms.
The sun was still high in the sky, although sunset would start in a few hours. Most of Class 1-A was sprawled across the main room.
Some students were relaxing on the chairs littered around the dorm. Others were in the kitchen, cooking some food. They collectively decided that tonight would be a movie night, so they were going to have an early dinner.
One student, Izuku Midoriya, was sitting on the couch in front of the tv. He was furiously writing down every single detail from a recently released All Might documentary.
"Allmightwas220cmtallandweighedapproximately274kgathisprime-"
"Shut the fuck up Deku! Quit your shitty mumbling and let me sleep!" yelled Katuski Bakugou. He was one of the most powerful students in Class 1-A, although his personality left much to be desired.
"Eep! Sorry Kacchan!"
"Hey, relax Bakugou. Why don't we go out and do something?" That question came from Eijiro Kirishima. He was leaning over the couch and watching the same documentary. While he wasn't as powerful as some of the other students, there wasn't a single classmate that had negative feelings towards the manly red-haired student.
"Hell no! I'd rather sleep than hang around you, shitty hair!"
Right then, Denki Kaminari decided to join in the conversation. He stood next to Kirishima on the couch. "Don't worry about him. 'Kacchan' is just really into Midoriya's mumblin-"
"FINISH THAT SENTENCE DUNCE FACE! I DARE YOU!" Bakugou sat up and started popping explosions in his hands.
"AH! Don't kill me please!"
Laughter erupted from the students who were witnessing this. Bakugou's reactions were always a source of entertainment for the class, even if the language was a bit crude.
"Hey Deku!" shouted Ochako Uraraka, walking down the stairs with Tsuyu Asui. "What's going on?" She took a seat next to Izuku on the couch.
"Kacchan." It was all Izuku needed to say for the two to understand.
"Who is he threatening this time, ribbit?" asked Asui.
"It's Kaminari. I didn't quite catch what he said though…."
"AHHH! I THOUGHT YOU WERE TOO SLEEPY TO DO ANYTHINGGG!" cried out Kaminari. It turned out Bakugou wasn't in a very forgiving mood and decided to chase the electric-quirked student around the common room.
"GET BACK HERE YOU BASTARD!"
"What a mad banquet of darkness." Fumikage Tokoyami mumbled to himself.
Before the chaos could devolve any further, Momo Yaoyorozu cut into the conversation.
"Attention everyone! I require assistance preparing dinner tonight. Who wishes to assist me?"
Minoru Mineta raised a hand from a chair. "I can do it! As long as you promise that you'll let me-" He was abruptly cut off by a very long tongue smacking his cheek.
"She didn't mean you, Mineta."
"I'll do it!" declared Rikido Sato, who was the unofficial best chef in the whole class.
"Yay! We'll get Sato's sweets tonight!" cheered Ashido Mina. Several others cheered along with her.
Uraraka was overjoyed with this turn of events. "Wow! Isn't this great, Deku?"
No response.
"Deku?" She turned her head to see that the quirk user was staring at his notebook.
Izuku did not hear a word from the last minute or so. His brain was focused on one thing, and one thing only:
"You're telling me that there's a line of All Might plushies that only had twenty-seven of them made? How could I not know this information?! I'm a failure of an All Might historian! Ihavetogetthisinformationdownnow!"
Even though Izuku's mumbling was less frequent than they once were, they still occurred at least once a day. The chances of him mumbling, however, went up significantly whenever anything All Might related came up.
"Deku! Snap out of it!" Uraraka started shaking the green haired teen.
"Ack!" Izuku's head suddenly snapped upwards. "W-Was I mumbling again?"
With a sigh, Uraraka nodded.
"Sorry!" He rubbed his head. "It's just that there's so much information on All Might!"
"Hey man, it's alright," chimed in Kirishima. "I think your fanboying of All Might is pretty manly!"
Izuku faintly blushed at the praise, but brushed it off. "By the way, what are we having for dinner?"
"I'm not entirely sure, but Sato and Yaoyorozu are cooking, so it's bound to be good!" said Uraraka. "There's nothing better than-"
She was cut off by the main door barging open. Standing there was All Might, who seemed to be panting. "Students! Please… remain calm!"
The movement in the dorm came to a halt. That was until Bakugou roared to life. "What the hell is going on?!"
All Might was still hunched over and breathing heavily. He took a few moments to calm his breathing, before he spoke up. "A villain is attempting to break into UA. We-"
"WHAT?!" The whole class shouted.
The former hero was taken aback, but he continued to speak. "Several of our own heroes are already fighting them, so it will be okay-"
"All Might!" Izuku had already grabbed his backpack from the wall and was right next to him. "Are we allowed to fight as well?"
"What? No!" He shook his head. "The students need to stay indoors! We have it handled!"
Izuku's shoulders slumped slightly. It only made sense. Why would the school let their own students figh-
"A phone call is here! A phone call is here!"
All Might suddenly looked embarrassed as he pulled out his phone. "Hello?"
"Ah, All Might!" A familiar voice went through the speakers. "I trust that you have already notified Class 1-A of the situation?"
"Yes, Nezu."
"Excellent! I was wondering if you would be willing to bring the students that wish to observe the fight?"
All Might froze. "C-Can you repeat that? I don't think I heard correctly." The other students weren't able to hear Nezu's voice, so they were confused about what was going on.
"My apologies! I was curious if you were willing to bring over the students to observe the fight. It will be a valuable learning lesson!"
"...Why?"
"The villain is starting to grow tired. Aizawa will have taken them down in a few minutes. Wouldn't it be nice to give the students an observation on what to do afterwards?"
All Might had a bad feeling about this, but going against Nezu wouldn't be wise. "Sigh, alright. I'll bring them over."
"Excellent! And, as the safety of the students is our priority, please make sure they don't get too close!"
"Alright." All Might hung up, silently hoping that Nezu wasn't plotting something evil. He turned to the class, who was staring at the former hero. "The Principal wants me to bring you to the fight."
A few minutes later, the entire class was outside the campus in their winter clothes. They were all watching Aizawa and the other heroes finish taking down the villain. The police were already on standby, ready to assist if needed.
"You… little… shit! How dare you!" Interestingly enough, the villain never seemed to use a quirk. Despite that, they were extremely fast and able to dodge most attacks.
Maybe they have a passive strengthening quirk? That was the most likely possibility, although there was a chance that they were being boosted by something similar to La Brava's quirk. Speaking of that… I don't think I learned about the conditions for it to activate. Dang it!
Of course, there was that slim chance that they were quirkless, but Izuku didn't seriously consider it. For one, they would have to be a high level assassin to manage those speeds. Yet, they apparently got caught before they could even enter UA.
(There was also that small part of him that felt like he betrayed himself by seeing a quirkless person keeping up with the heroes. He shook it off though. No point in thinking about the past, right?)
Even though the villain was doing a great job avoiding capture at first, the pace of the heroes eventually proved to be too much. They were finally taken down by a yell from Present Mic. Once they were down, they tied them up and started handing them over to the police.
Meanwhile, Aizawa started walking back to the entrance when he noticed his class watching. Then he glared at All Might. "What are you doing with my students?"
He sheepishly rubbed his head. "Apologizes, Aizawa. Nezu wanted me to bring the students here to watch the fight. Something about learning what happens afterwards?"
The teacher rubbed his nose. "What's the stupid rat thinking about now?" He turned back to the villain. "Oh well. Stay back and watch the police."
Bakugou wasn't satisfied with that. "Why don't you let us arrest the bastard?!"
"Because you're not a certified police officer," Aizawa said blankly. The explosion quirk user clicked his tongue in response.
The villain was currently on the verge of unconsciousness, having lost the will to fight. That was until they moved their head up and noticed the class watching.
"...Hey… isn't that… All Might?" He mumbled to himself. Then his eyes widened. "ALL MIGHT!" Suddenly, a rush of energy burst through his system and he tore away from the police officers.
All Might stood there with widened eyes as the villain dashed straight for him. However, thanks to his many years of heroic experience, he regained his bearings and managed to dodge him.
The villain would have normally changed directions and gone right for the former hero. However, they were already feeling weak from the fight earlier; thus, their movements were slower. Instead, they continued moving towards the person directly behind All Might: Izuku Midoriya.
Luckily, he was a UA student. He quickly activated One For All and swooped around the villain, before giving a kick to his back. They fell forwards onto the ground, now unconscious.
Everyone was silent for a moment. Izuku looked hesitant on what to do next, but Aizawa finally spoke up. "Good job on the dodge." The teacher walked up to the villain and reached out to grab them, but froze. "...Midoriya."
He jumped slightly. "Y-Yeah?"
"Pick him up." His eyes widened slightly, before he nodded and obeyed his teacher's command. "Bring him back to the police car. I'll be next to you in case of an emergency."
Izuku was curious why Aizawa was letting him pick up the villain, before he remembered what the principal had apparently said. Maybe he wants to say something about learning?
"Oi! Why is Deku allowed to arrest the bastard?!" Bakugou protested, looking as if he would run to take the villain himself. He was stopped by Kirishima, however.
"Relax, man." Kirishima placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's all part of the learning experience." Bakugou glared at the red-haired teen, but relented and didn't bother running at Izuku.
The two approached the police car, not realizing that one of the villain's hands was in contact with Izuku's body. In most other cases, this wouldn't even be worth mentioning. What the green haired teen failed to factor was their quirk.
At first, nothing happened. The villain was still unconscious, after all. However, randomly during their periods of rest, their quirk would activate.
Unfortunately for Izuku, one of those times was right after they fell unconscious.
They had just reached the police car when their hands started glowing. It started out faint, but as the seconds ticked by, the glow got brighter and brighter. It quickly became noticeable to the others.
"Young Midoriya, watch out!" All Might shouted out.
"Eh?" Izuku looked back in confusion, before noticing the glowing. "Eh?!" He tried to drop the villain, but they seemed to be glued to his body.
Aizawa's eyes widened and he tried to reach for the green haired teen. But it was too late.
Izuku heard the shouts and worries of the people around him as he struggled to get away. But then, his senses suddenly deadened. Around him, the glow rapidly grew larger, before it abruptly disappeared. The villain collapsed to the ground, still unconscious.
There was no one else there.
Izuku tried opening his eyes, but he found that task supremely difficult.
"Ugh…. what happened…" he mumbled out. Sound was slowly returning to his ears, although wherever he was, it was deadly quiet.
It took him a few minutes, but Izuku was finally able to force his eyes open. He found himself inside of an alleyway.
Why am I in an alleyway? The last thing he remembered was trying to throw a villain off him. That was right next to UA, which was nowhere near any alleyways. What was going on?
While retaining his confusion, he pushed himself off the ground. His muscles felt very weak, but he could feel his strength slowly returning to them. He spotted his backpack not very far from him. That was good. He then looked around, hoping to see if anyone he knew was nearby.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Izuku was utterly alone. This is really creepy…
He shook his head. Ok, no! Focus! Let's think. There were no alleyways on the hill UA sat on. Thus, he was clearly not at UA. Unless it's one of the training fields. Oh crap, did they put me here as punishment for fighting the villain?!
He was slightly panicked, until he looked up. That's when he noticed that the sky was dark. Nighttime? Aizawa wouldn't ever do something like this. Which meant that he was definitely not at UA then.
As he was looking, he observed that the buildings were much taller than any in Mustafu. Most of the buildings around UA were short, with the tallest one being around six-seven stories tall. The buildings making up the alleyway were well over that.
That meant he had to be in a big city of some sort. All alone. With no idea of how he got there or to get back.
Wasn't that terrifying?
Calm down! Izuku took in deep breaths. Gradually, his anxiety was returning back to manageable levels. He's been in plenty of worse situations, right? Just being lost was nothing compared to the villains he had to fight.
Ok, first things first. He walked over to his backpack and picked it up. Thankfully, his belongings were still inside. He had no time to look over them though. The first thing he did was pull out his phone. He intended to try calling someone, but that plan fell through when he noticed he had no service at all.
"...Great." He accidentally mumbled that out, but no one was around to hear it. Maybe this alleyway doesn't have service? It might be better to walk outside of the alleyway anyways. It would give him a better idea of where he was.
Izuku walked out of the alleyway, hoping to get an idea of where he was. If he was lucky, he would be in Tokyo. His childhood consisted of watching All Might fights all the time, so he had an idea of what the city looked like.
"..."
Well, this was definitely not Tokyo.
The buildings around him held a build quality that seemed far more advanced than the ones at home. None of the buildings around him were recognizable in any way. And, biggest of all, there were wind turbines on every single block. Izuku knew for a fact that there was nowhere in Japan like this.
How did I get outside of Japan?! Maybe that villain's quirk was a teleportation one? That would make… sense…
Izuku's thoughts trailed off when he spotted a storefront in front of him. It was perfectly normal. Nothing was off about it.
Except for the fact that it was written in Kanji.
He darted his head to the stores next to it. Just like the previous one, they were written in Japanese. If that was the case, then he was actually still in Japan.
D-Did I wander onto a secret government city?! Actually, that was a plausible theory. In the distance, he noticed that there were small robots cleaning the street. That would be UA level technology or better. Still, what would be the point of it?
As his mind rapidly thought of explanations, a sudden beam of light shot up straight into the sky. It snapped him out of his thoughts. For a few seconds, he stared at the light as it broke through the clouds and entered space
… Izuku pinched himself. Ouch. Ok, this isn't a dream. Whatever that was, it had to be a really powerful quirk. Or a weapon. Either of those were possibilities.
I think I need to ask someone where I am. It was clearly somewhere that he wasn't aware of. However, the streets appeared to be empty and devoid of life. So where would he-
With perfect timing, several voices could suddenly be heard from behind him. Izuku turned around to see four girls walking down the alleyway. The darkness made it impossible to make out their features though.
"-it necessary to super makee their deaths so slow?"
"It was their fault for pathetically trying to put up a defense against us."
"Wow Mugino, that's a bit extreme, even for you."
… Maybe this wasn't such a great idea after all. Still, he needed information. He swallowed down his fear and pushed himself.
"Hey!" Izuku shouted, causing the conversations to come to a halt. "Can… Can one of you tell me where I am?!"
All four girl's heads snapped to Izuku, which sent a shiver down his back. His danger sense was urging him to get the hell out of there. But he stayed still, hoping for an answer.
"Oh? And who do we have here?"
"Someone who super hit their head on a rock. Who the hell forgets where they are?"
"Why don't we indulge in his request? Basically, he seems way too weak to pose a threat to us. There's no way he could beat any of us!"
Three of the girls said that all at once. The last one remained quiet, although Izuku could feel her staring a hole through him. T-This feels scary… I have to stay strong!
"...Academy City. District 15. Inside an alleyway. That's all you're getting."
"Academy City…?" Izuku accidentally mumbled that out. "Where is that?" He never heard of anywhere in Japan with that name. Also, what kind of name was that?
He didn't notice that he had mumbled that a little too loudly. The four girls stared at him with expressions of bewilderment.
"Wow, this guy super actually hit his head on a rock." That sentence brought Izuku out of his thoughts. Just in time to see a bright green orb appear right next to one of the girls.
"What kind of dumbass has never heard of Academy city?! Now I'm convinced you're screwing with us!" The light from the orb revealed that they had a crazed expression. That sent even more shivers down Izuku's spine.
"Huh?! N-No!" Izuku was backing up and rapidly waving his hands back and forth. "I genuinely don't know anything!" For safety measure, he reached for his quirk and started charging One For All, in case things continued to escalate.
Thanks to the green orb of light, he could now see the girl's appearances. The one who remained quiet had shoulder-length black hair. For some reason, she was wearing a tracksuit, but Izuku did not want to know why. It could easily be for a terrifying reason.
The one who suggested listening to his request for his location had blonde hair and blue eyes. On her head was a beret, although he couldn't tell what color it was exactly.
The third girl that told Izuku his location seemed like the youngest one there. All he could see was that she had short brown hair in a style similar to Uraraka and that her shorts revealed… a bit too much.
And finally, the current biggest threat to his survival: the one with the green orbs. She had soft tea-colored hair and brown eyes. Izuku could definitely tell that she was beautiful, enough that she could have passed for a model. If the situation was different, he might have gotten very flustered.
"Sorry dude. Basically, once Mugino gets mad, there's no getting out of it."
A green laser suddenly shot out of the orb, nearly striking Izuku in the head. It was only thanks to his UA training that he was able to dodge the attack. Oh crap!
Determining correctly that his life was severely at risk now, he activated One For All and ran away from the alleyway as fast as he possibly could. The girls were surprised at the action, as they assumed he was too weak to do anything.
"He got away. Damn it." The three girls lamented their failure, but it wasn't a big deal anyways. They didn't appear to be part of any groups, so they shrugged it off.
The black haired girl, however…
"That… was odd…"
"Takitsubo? You seem super confused."
"That guy… he didn't have an AIM field."
"WHAT?!"
While they were arguing back in the alleyway, Izuku had already placed enough distance between him and the deadly girls for them to have a difficult time following him.
He was panting slightly, due to how quickly he dashed out of there. He already knew that it was a bad idea to ask people talking about killing so nonchalantly, but he didn't think it would end up this bad!
"That quirk was pretty cool though! I don't know what it does, but I could feel the heat emerging off it. Can it be controlled like a laser beam? How hot does-" Izuku shook himself out of his mumbling sprawl. Focus! I need to learn more about this… Academy City place.
Izuku wandered around a little bit, before he came upon a large shopping area. Nearly all of the stores were closed, but there were several screens that displayed information about the weather and any recent news.
"...Huh…?"
It also showed the date, which was apparently July 28, 2004.
"...Are my eyes broken?" He slapped them over and over. Nope, still there. "Hahahahaha, maybe the screen is broken! There's no way it's 2004! Hahahaha!"
Izuku's brain was having a meltdown. It refused to accept the sight in front of him. Silly city! They really need to fix this! Hahahaha…
"...Shit." There was no point in denying it. Considering how everything else seemed to be technologically advanced, an error like this wouldn't be possible. I need to think about this completely.
The heroes at UA were fighting a villain. That villain never exhibited signs that they were using a quirk. His teacher defeated the villain and was about to be sent with the police, when he suddenly reached for All Might. He dodged and kicked him unconscious. Then he picked them up and was about to reach the car when he started glowing. That's where my memories end.
Wait… It was difficult to tell, but the emergence point must have been from the hand. The villain tried to reach for All Might using his hand. That means it must have been their quirk! A teleportation quirk? Except, Academy City has never existed. Something like this would have been obvious, even if it was destroyed.
So... oh no. Oh No. OH NO! NOOO!
Izuku desperately tried to think of other possibilities, but they all had a flaw. With the facts laid out, there was only one option. And that terrified him.
"I-I'm in a different universe."
Hey there. Welcome to a new story!
While I've been a fan of My Hero Academia for a while now, I only recently got into A Certain Magical Index. I really like the whole Index universe and all of the interactions between characters. Then I thought: What if Izuku got sent to this universe?
Normally, these ideas just go away, but for some reason, this idea just stuck with me. Eventually, I decided to go with it and here we are!
If you're a previous reader, you'll have noticed that I rewrote this chapter. Frankly, I like this version a lot better than the original. I think the characterization of Izuku is superior and the way he gets sent is better than what it was before. Not the greatest way, but it's better.
I hope you enjoy the future chapters! If you don't, well, sorry about that.
