Chapter 16: A Card For a Present

Despite her embarrassment she had been shocked when she saw the faceless woman go right through her door. She could 'feel' Crystal's anger and knew that what she had done wasn't out of malice. It was because of what Li had done.

"It's alright," she told Crystal.

"Beverly, that thing might kill half the crew," Kero told her.

"I doubt that Crystal would do anything to kill half of the crew," Beverly said. "Kero, I think I need a word with you."

He sighed and said, "Fine."

She saw that Kero was listening when she explained about how she believed that Crystal had managed to be conceived. She told him about the fact that she sensed things from the Captain that she knew was 'more than' friends and that it seemed a bit odd that Crystal had even been born.

"I never had any proof other than we probably had too much wine," she said. "But I'm sure that some kind of force was involved."

"That might have happened," Kero said.

"And I trust that this thing won't harm anyone," Beverly told him.

The next morning it was revealed that Li and his guardian were dead. The thing had killed but Beverly personally didn't care. Li was off the ship and away from harming anymore people that she considered family. The bodies were sent back to earth, the blood was cleaned up by a crew of very upset Ensigns, and life moved on. There was no chance in the world that Li's enchantment had done anything to her.

Until the morning sickness came and it had happened in the most embarrassing of all places. During a staff meeting.

"Mr. O'Brian transport Doctor Crusher to sickbay," Deanna ordered.

The sound of transport filled the room and Beverly was gone.

"How long have you been sick?" Nurse Ogawa asked her.

"It just started this morning," Beverly answered.

"Okay, I'll run some tests," she said. "If it's not anything that requires you to stay overnight, we'll release you to your quarters."

Beverly knew this but she was the patient and not the Doctor.

She listened as Nurse Ogawa ran a tricorder over her body until she heard a sound that she hadn't heard in a very long time. She didn't need any kind of abilities to know that Li's actions did do something to her.

"Doctor, I didn't know that you were seeing someone."

"Trust me, I wasn't."

"Doctor, your pregnant," she said. "Do you need-?"

"Alyssa, I have a funny feeling I know who the father is," she said. "Just, let me tell him when it's time."

She nodded and Beverly was glad that the young Nurse had the ability to make a choice to consider what she had seen to be delicate. She gave her something for the morning sickness and then Beverly said, "I need a word with Crystal and Wesley."

"I'll have them brought in," she said.

"Thanks," Beverly said. "Oh what am I going to tell the others?"

"Counselor Troi to Ensign Brown."

"Brown here."

"You have a cleanup," she told him.

"What! Again!" he exclaimed. "Fine, I'll have my crew come at once."

The cleaning crew arrived just as they left and Deanna heard, "What is wrong with this place?"

Deanna thought long about the whole bunch of odd that had happened since Beverly arrived back on the Enterprise. She had seen things that she was sure wasn't covered in University and it seemed that the ship was taking it pretty well. Crystal was a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders and Wesley was overly protective of her. Beverly was the ultimate mother hen, glaring at anyone that dared to insult her children. The death of Li and his guardian had shaken Deanna.

All she had felt was pure rage and that kind of hate was hard to reproduce. It was born from the depths of the soul and as dark as anything that she had ever experienced. The last time that she had felt anything that dark was the thing that had killed Tasha. Three days later you couldn't tell that it had even been there. Deanna decided to visit sickbay, to see if Beverly was alright.

"So this is because of what that Li brat did," she heard Wesley say the moment that Deanna walked in.

"What did Li do?"

She sensed that this was a conversation that Beverly didn't want Deanna to hear. Yet, she had a feeling that she would be hearing plenty.

"Mother is expecting," Crystal told her.

"Crystal, you don't say it like that," Wesley said.

"Sorry, big brother."

"Of course only a Monster would say something like that."

Crystal went red and slammed her foot on his, making him hiss in pain.

"Wait a minute, your pregnant," Deanna said. "But don't you have the implant?"

"It seems that it's not working anymore," Beverly told her.

"And who's the father?" Deanna asked her.

"I think that you should know the answer to that question," Beverly said, going pink.

"Ah Mr. French good looks."

"Oh can we not talk about this," Wesley groaned, covering his ears. "I'm not hearing this, no, I'm not."

Everyone laughed, including Beverly.

"So who's going to tell the Captain?"

"Oh no, not me," Crystal said.

"Leave me out of this one," Wesley said.

"I'm not telling him," Deanna said.

"Looks like it's up to me," Beverly said. "Deanna, could you bring the Captain here and have Data come with him. I have a feeling I'm going to need Data to catch him when he passes out."

"Why do you think he'll pass out?"

"Because I passed out when I found out that I was having this pretty little thing."

"Your mother is pregnant," Kero said.

"Yeah, that's what she told me and Wesley," she said. "Is there a problem?"

"No, I think it's great," he said. "But I'm worried that she might put her life in danger if she thinks that you're in danger."

"Me too and I'm sorry about summoning that woman."

Kero put his little hand on her arm and said, "Your mother explained everything and I understand how you felt. Just, don't try to do that again. It takes years of practice to get down how to create a new lifeform."

"You have a deal."

"However I have to admit, you did a pretty good job for your first time," Kero added.

"That means a lot," Crystal said. "Though I wonder what dad is thinking right now."

"Why do you ask?"

"Because mother has to be the one to tell him that another Picard is coming," she said, giggling. "And next week is my birthday."

"Kero, there's always cake."

Crystal shook her head.

"So how is my Doctor doing?" Jean-Luc asked Beverly.

"I'm doing much better," she said. "Data, my daughter's birthday is next week and I wanted to have a party for her. Nothing huge, but something that's fun."

"She was born on Halloween," Jean-Luc said.

"Yes, she was," Beverly said. "Trust me, she was a week early."

"I will work on it at once," Data promised.

"Thanks," Beverly said. "I didn't have Deanna have you both come in to talk about a party, even though I'm grateful that Data is helping out, I had her summon you both because Li's actions had a strange repercussion that I don't think that no one would thought would have happened."

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm pregnant," she answered.

Just as she thought would happen he passed out, Data catching him.

"Do humans act like this?"

"No, they don't," Beverly answered and then she laughed.

Yep, he acted just like she thought he would.

"Let's get him on the bed," Nurse Ogawa said, her lips twitched into a small. "Oh the poor man, too many surprises for one day."

"He had too many surprises," Beverly said. "I'll be nine months of surprises."

"Well at least it will be only one," the Nurse said. "I don't think he will be able to handle more than that."

"In the immortal words of Kero, expect the unexpected," Beverly said.

She had no idea how right she was.

News that another Picard was on its way was all over the ship by the end of the week. Beverly didn't know whether to laugh or to feel sorry for him when everyone told him congratulations. And, of course, everyone had their idea on whether it would be a boy or a girl. A boy meant Shalaft's Syndrome. A girl was just a girl. Deep down Beverly wondered if her child would have the same kind of magical talent that Crystal was sporting.

Despite everything Crystal's birthday came around. The table was filled with cupcakes, cookies, food of all kinds, and a giant chocolate cake. Crystal had told Data that she wanted a chocolate cake for her birthday. Beverly thought it was to make Deanna happy. They had it in Cargo bay one, so that children could attend.

"I think this is the best use of the cargo bay that I've seen," Deanna said, eating some pasta that Guinan had made.

"I still can't believe that my baby is twelve," she said.

"And you have another baby on the way," Deanna answered.

"Have you talked to the Captain about this?"

"I think he's hiding," Deanna said. "I think he's shocked that, this time around, he's going to be there for the beginning."

"I know; I can't believe that I'm having another one."

"Sounds like you're going to have a great nine months."

Beverly smiled at her.

"Hay, look who just arrived," Will said and they all turned to see the cargo bay doors close and standing there was Crystal, Kero on her shoulder, and the Captain. "I think she dragged him away from wherever he was hiding."

"Thank god," Beverly said. "Now he can't hide from me."

As she spoke several flower peddle flew down.

"Strange," Deanna said. "Beverly, be nice."

"I promise."

"Oh this is amazing," Crystal said. "I think Data outdid himself."

"I think he did," Jean-Luc said.

"Oh look, there's mom."

She waved at her and she sensed her father tensing up.

"Hello, boys," Beverly said. "I'm glad to see that you found your father."

"It wasn't hard."

He saw the smile on Beverly's lips and another flower petal fell.

"Why don't you go off and have fun before Deanna eats all the chocolate pudding."

Kero flew off and Crystal ran after him, leaving her parents behind.

She found Kero trying to spoon some pudding into a small plate. Crystal smiled at the sight of this small creature trying to do something big. Suddenly more and more petals fell and then she sensed it.

"Kero, I think a Clow Card is here," she said.

He looked up from what he was doing just in-time to see the whole cargo bay start filling up with petals.

"Your right," he said, "Crystal, these flowers remind me of the Flower Card."

"The what?"

"The Flower Card," he said. "It has the power to create any kind of flower that you want. It just loves happy moments, including birthday's."

"Okay, I'm on it," she said.

"And you better hurry, this room is started to fill up with them."

All around her people started to notice the huge amount of flowers that were starting to appear. Crystal took out her key, "Oh key of Clow. Power of Magic, Power of Might. Surrender the wand, the force ignite…. RELEASE!"

Once she had her wand in her hand Kero said, "LOOK, UP THERE."

She looked up to see a strange girl going around and around. Every time she did the flowers just fell even more.

She took off and landed on the walkway that was above everything. The Flower just smiled at her and before she could do anything it grabbed her hands and started to dance with her.

"Crystal, seal that card," Kero called out. "Before everyone drowns in flowers."

"I'm really sorry about this," Crystal said and she managed to break away. "I command you to return to your power confine…. FLOWER CARD."

Flower went into the card and then all the flowers vanished.

"Great job, Crystal."

"Thanks," she said. "Come on, let's get back to my party."

"I guess the party was too much for her," Beverly said as she was placed in bed.

"I guess that your right," he told her. "Beverly, I'm sorry about hiding away like that."

"What did you do while you were hiding from the world."

He looked at her and said, "I was having a talk with Marie. She told me that right now I need to be focus on something other than my ship. I'm going to agree with her on that."

She placed her hand in his and said, "Thanks for no longer hiding."

A/N: I thought Crystal's birthday was the perfect place to have the Flower Card appear. It would also allow her parents to talk about things.
