Chapter 14: An Archer's Broken Heart

[Palo Alto, California – Friday, March 2, 2018 | 11:27 AM]

The place was a mess, chairs and tables were strewn up everywhere, the furniture was all askew, and picture frames lay shattered and broken on the house floor.

One would think that this was the cause of a break-in, in truth however, all of this was caused by a certain Artemis Crock who had finally reached her breaking point.

She was currently huddling in her room, the room she once shared with Wally West throughout all the time they've been together. Artemis had spent the last night and early morning crying her heart out; in her hands lay the phone that once belonged to her now passed lover, Wally West.

Once upon a time, she would have thought nothing other than good and positive things about him. She would even go as far as to say that he was the light of her world. Sure he had his flaws, but even so, Artemis loved him and she loved him dearly with all her heart.

That was of course, until she had learned of the truth…

[Central City, Missouri – Wednesday, February 28, 2018 | 02:30 PM]

Artemis sat on the couch within the living room of her sister's house in the suburbs of Central City, she was currently flicking through all of the different channels that the cable service provider was willing to offer.

'Seriously.', she told herself, 'Who even watches cable these days?'

She heard the sound of footsteps descending from the staircase behind her.

"This better be good Jade, I drove 19 hours from New York to here so this better be worth it.", Artemis scoffed.

Her sister simply gave her a disheartened look and took a seat right beside her.

Artemis gave her a curious yet caring look, "You alright sis? Is everything okay? What's wrong?"

Jade sighed, "Will and I managed to stumble on something while we were cleaning out Wally's storage locker and… Well, we thought about it and… We decided that it's best that you finally know…"

"Know what?", Artemis inquired.

Her sister didn't say anything and simply gave her a phone.

Artemis could recognize the phone from anywhere, from its Flash-themed case to all the stickers that were attached to it, it was Wally's phone. The device itself was a gift actually, Robin (the first one) gave it to Wally as a farewell present the day before she and him were set to leave for California.

"Wally's phone? What do you want me to do with Wally's phone?", Artemis questioned.

Jade simply sighed, that saddened look still affixed on her face, "It's best if you see it for yourself."

Artemis gave her sister a knowing glare then set her sights back on the device. Reluctantly, she booted it up and unlocked it, she didn't know why but it looks like Wally forgot to set-up the lock screen. The device was very simple enough, it was an iPhone 7+ and to her surprise, it still held a charge. Granted, Jade and Will would have probably charged it beforehand but still, it surprised her nonetheless.

One of the things that also caught Artemis aback was when she unlocked the device was that the wallpaper was different. The last time she saw Wally use the phone, the wallpaper was a picture of them together the day she graduated Gotham Academy; right now though, the phone's wallpaper had the Kid Flash emblem instead. Artemis still has no clue as to how and why Jade and Will thought that she needed his phone, the reason as to why she agreed to pack it up was that she believed that she didn't need it and she also wanted to respect Wally's privacy.

She didn't know why, but something urged her to look into his messages. She knows it's wrong, but her gut told her that whatever it is that Jade and Will wants her to see, it has to have something to do with his messages. Clicking on the iMessage icon loaded-up all of the text messages Wally sent throughout the time he used the app.

At first glance, it would seem like the messages were just as same as any other 21-year-old would send, she saw "Mom", "Dad", "Uncle Barry", "Aunt Iris", & "Dickie Boy" as his most recent contacts.

What made it peculiar though was that Artemis' contact was simply set to "Artemis".

'That's odd.', she told herself, 'I though Wally came up with some weird, corny nickname for me in his contact list?'

Her questions seemed to have been answered when she saw the last contact Wally conversed with before he lay down his phone, never to use it again.

The contact had the name "My Pink Lucky Charm" with a kiss and a bright pink heart emoji at the end. What made the revelation stung even more was that right below that contact was Artemis.

'What the…', she pondered.

"Jade.", Artemis asked, "What the hell is this?"

Jade didn't say anything and simply urged her to read his messages. Artemis knew that she would be voiding what little privacy he had left beyond the grave but she had to know, she needed to know. Who was this "Pink Lucky Charm"? Why did Wally keep their messages a secret?

Artemis sighed as she opened up the message conversation, there was no turning back now…

Artemis couldn't believe what she was reading, she's spent the past hour or so crying as she read Wally's conversation with this mysterious "Pink Lucky Charm" person.

She wanted to deny it. She wanted to deny it so bad but the evidence was all up in her face. Everything and everything that was needed to prove, convict, and incriminate the late West was in her hands and she was reading it. He was already dead, yes, but that didn't make the pain go away any quicker…

Wally West.

Her boyfriend and her lover.

The person she spent the last 5 years of her life with.

The person she loved with all her heart 'till the day he died.

Had been cheating on her.

For the past 3 years…

Artemis wanted to throw the phone and smash it to pieces. She wanted to think that all of it was a lie but she couldn't. She knew what she was seeing, what she was reading, was all true.

She looked up to her older sister, eyes red and puffy from all the tears she shed and without hesitation, her older sister pulled her into a warm and comforting embrace.

"I-I…", Artemis wanted to speak but she couldn't, she can't, she didn't know what to even say anymore has her mind went blank.

"Shush.", Jade silenced her, "I know it hurts but just let it out. All your sadness and anger and all your pent-up emotions, just let it all out."

With that, Artemis let her walls shatter and crumble as she finally collapsed into her sister's arms…

[Central City, Missouri – Wednesday, February 28, 2018 | 3:45 PM]

Jade had finally managed to keep her sister calm and under control; she could still hear Artemis' sniffles from the living room as she made some tea from the kitchen.

Taking the tray, the teapot, and the two china teacups; Jade made her way back to the living room to do her job as an older sibling and console her younger sister from the stunning revelation that she had just suffered.

Artemis was still reading all of Wally's traitorous text messages as Jade set the tray on the coffee table in-front of them. She was still in the process of reading the very last text message that Wally sent to this still-mysterious "Pink Lucky Charm" person.

Wally: "Hey babe *kiss emoji*"

Pinky: "If it isn't good ol' Romeo, what makes you decide to check up on little ol' me this fine and lovely day?"

Wally: "Can't a guy simply check up on his sweet and beautiful girl?"

Pinky: "Charmer, anyways, whatchu doing right now?"

Wally: "Nothing much, I'm off to the Cave again, hbu?"

Pinky: "Ehh, I'm just chilling here in my apartment. It gets very lonely without you around *sad face emoji*"

Wally: "Just you wait babe, once I'm done with this mission, I'll make a beeline straight on over to your place. You know I always spare time for my best girl!"

Pinky: "Best girl? So what? You're seeing other people too? *pout emoji*"

Wally: "My bad! What I was trying to say was, I always spare time for my only girl!"

Pinky: "Only girl huh? What about that archer you're bumping boots with? She still kicking around?"

Wally: "Artemis? Don't worry about her babe, I promise that once this whole shebang is over, I'll finally break-up with her."

Pinky: "You sure about that?"

Wally: "Yes I'm sure, the 3 years we've been together has been the best 3 years of my life and it's high time I spend it with you and only you *kiss emoji*"

Pinky: "You know, that archer will probably kill me when she finds out about this, right?"

Wally: "Don't worry babe, I'll protect you."

Pinky: "Really? You'll take an arrow to the heart for little ol' me?"

Wally: "If you'd let me, I'll take arrows and bullets for you all-day everyday!"

Pinky: "Well you better get to it Runny Boy, I'll be waiting for you."

Wally: "I shall come for you soon, my fair maiden."

Pinky: "You're too fucking cheesy, you know that?"

Wally: "That's part of my charm babe *wink emoji*"

Pinky: "Whatever, just get to me soon once ya'll are done with your mission okay?"

Wally: "Right away mam!"

Pinky: *kiss emoji*

Wally: *kiss emoji*

Artemis was snapped out of her daze when her sister spoke.

"I think that's enough Artemis.", Jade began, "Read anymore and you might end-up breaking that phone. We still need it in one piece as evidence y'know."

The archer still had stifled sobs as she finally lowered-down the device onto the living room's coffee table. Jade poured her sister a cup of tea and gave it to her as she cuddled into her for warmth and comfort.

"Y'know.", Artemis spoke, her voice raspier than it usually was, "I never thought Wally would be the guy to cheat. I mean, I know he tries to hit on other girls and pretends to be some sort of 'ladies' man' but for him to actually cheat on me. I…"

She couldn't even finish her sentence without having tears cascade down her face once more.

Jade placed her cup of tea on the tray and gave her sister a warm, soothing, and comforting embrace as she rubbed her back.

"I know it hurts, I know it hurts so much and I don't know what to say right now since I've never experienced something like that happen to me but you need to know. Don't get too worked-up about this Arty.", Jade stated, "You're a sweet, strong, powerful, and independent woman. Don't let someone as pathetic as that cheating red-head drag you down. You can do so much better than him, he was never even deserving of you in the first place."

Artemis let out a soft chuckle through her tears, "I guess you're right; I didn't even know why I stuck-up with him for the past 5 years. I could've done so much better; I know I can do better. I guess I just stayed with him 'cause I was still too naïve."

"I still have no clue as to why you chose that deadbeat punk.", Jade commented, "I could remember half of all the boys in Gotham Academy would risk life and limb just to go out on a date with you."

Artemis giggled, "Like I said, I was still a dumb kid at the time. In a sense, I still kinda am but eitherway, I'm done with him and that's that."

"Do you think that's why he got sucked into the Speedforce and died?", Jade pondered, "It happened so that he would pay his penance for lying to you for the past 3 years?"

The archer put some genuine effort into thinking about it, "I never thought about it that way, but now that you mention it, it could be possible."

"Well then.", Jade mockingly spat, "It's safe to say that that punk finally got what he deserved."

Artemis laughed, "Damn fucking straight sis, damn fucking straight…"

The two sisters sat on the sofa as they watched whatever generic reality/romance/crime/mystery/sit-com show that was currently airing. It wasn't until then when a sudden thought popped into Artemis' mind…

"Jade?", she asked.

"Where are Will and Lian?"

"Oh yeah!", her older sister answered, "Will went to get groceries and took Lian with him. He said that it would be better if I was the one who talked to you instead, he mentioned something about him being a red-head and that you might accidentally punch him in the face once I break the news or something."

"In fairness, Will and Wally do look somewhat alike. Not by a lot mind you, but they kinda look similar in a sense."

"I'd be lying if I said that's not true, still though, I'm glad I ended-up with Will."

The two sisters laughed as the afternoon sun passed. Outside, the sun was about to set in the horizon as the moon, the stars, and the night sky began to take its place. No doubt that Jade's husband and her daughter would be home any minute.

"Hey.", Jade began.

"How 'bout you spend the night here?"

"You heard me. Besides, it's getting dark and I don't want you to drive back to wherever it is you came from at such hour. Plus, you'll end-up in some cheap motel anyway so just stay here and drive back home in the morning."

Artemis pretended to contemplate for a while before giving her answer, "Sure, why not. Besides, I kinda missed seeing Lian around."

Jade smiled, "It's settled then, you know which room's yours upstairs."

[Palo Alto, California – Friday, March 2, 2018 | 12:00 PM (PST)]

[Present Day]

After finally getting herself together, Artemis decided to clean up the mess she made in the house. She didn't want to worry Jade, but she really needed to let out those emotions hence the wrecked-up furniture and shattered picture frames.

After ordering lunch and packing her things, Artemis decided to take a few days off away from the place. She still loved having the home, but the place had too many memories of her and Wally so she wanted to get away and clear her head for a few days.

Picking up her phone, she scrolled through her contact list and tapped on a familiar number…

[New York City, New York – Friday, March 2, 2018 – 3:00 PM (EST)]

Zatanna lounged on the couch of her flat in Downtown Manhattan. It was a Friday so she didn't have too much work to attend to at the Watchtower and she had the weekend off so she decided to spend her little staycation "wisely" (depending on how you see it) by being bundled up in her sofa watching whatever film was trending on Netflix for the time being.

Eventually, Zatanna heard her phone ring. Picking it up revealed that the caller was none-other than her blonde-haired, Vietnamese best friend.

"Hey Arty? What's up?", Zatanna greeted.

"Hey Zee, how you doing?", the voice on the other end of the line asked.

"I'm pretty good. How 'bout you?"

"I've been better. Say, can I crash over at your place for a few days?"

"Why, what happened? Did your landlord kick you out or something?"

"No, God no. I just wanted to take a breather and all I guess. It's fine if you're too busy, I understand, I'll call you back some other time."

"No, no! It's fine! I'm not really doing anything and I got the next few days off so I don't mind having some company."

"Great, I'll be there in the next couple of hours. I'd like to drive but it'll be too much of a hassle so I'll just take a plane instead."

"Why won't you just take the Zeta Tubes?"

"I don't think I have the clearance to use those anymore. I retired from the Team, remember?"

In truth however, Artemis was just guilty to use League equipment nowadays even though she still had clearance to use them simply because she now lives life as a mercenary. On a similar note, Zatanna has absolutely no clue that her best friend is now the mercenary "Huntress". In Artemis' defence however, she thought it would be better if Zatanna never hears nor learns about this for fear of losing her friendship with her; the same goes to all of the members and retired members of the Team excluding Will (and if you'd think about it, Richard too for that matter).

"Oh yeah, anyways, just call once you land in JFK okay? I'll pick you up once you're out."

"Nah, I'll just take a cab instead. I'm already spending a few days over at your place, it'll be rude of me to ask you to pick me up from the airport too."

"Alright then, I guess I'll just wait. See you soon Arty!"

"Thanks a bunch Zee, I'll see you when I get there."

[New York City, New York – Friday, March 2, 2018 – 9:30 PM]

Zatanna was about to flip on over to another movie as the end-credits to "Dracula Untold" began to play on-screen when she heard a knock on the door.

The magician walked on over to the door and was immediately engulfed in a bone-crushing hug the moment she opened it.

"Arty! Arty!", Zatanna tried to blurt out as she patted the blonde on the back, "C-Can't, b-breathe!"

The archer gasped an pulled away, "Oh! I'm so sorry Zee, I guess I just missed you and all that."

Zatanna mustered a heart-warming smile. "Miss me that much Arty?"

She then stepped aside, "Come on in Artemis. You know what they say, mi casa es su casa."

"Aren't you Italian?"

"I am, is it bad for an Italian to learn Spanish though?"

Artemis chuckled, "Fair point."

"I've already set-up the guest bedroom for you, down the hall, second door on the left."

"Thanks.", Artemis replied as she walked over to her quarters.

"Can I get you anything?", Zatanna hollered from the hall.

"Coffee would be nice!"

"Coming right up!"

The archer and the magician now cuddled in the living room sofa with a massive blanket draped over them as they watched the film, "Ocean's 11". On the coffee table lay Artemis' coffee mug and Zatanna's cup of chamomile tea.

"So.", Zatanna began as she took a sip of her tea, "What bring you here for the weekend."

Without warning, Artemis blurted out, "Wally cheated on me.", with a sad yet stoic expression affixed on her face.

The magician's eyes grew wide at the statement as she stared at the blonde archer in shock, nearly dropping her cup of tea in the process.

"Hard to believe, isn't it?", Artemis continued.

"I-I… Wow… Yeah, I guess…", Zatanna uttered in disbelief, "How did you find out about it?"

"Jade and Will told me.", she answered as she cuddled further into the blanket, "They were cleaning out the storage locker where we kept Wally's things and they found his phone. They took a peek and they found out that the prick had actually been cheating on me for the past 3 years; after that, they gave me a call and showed me the evidence first-hand."

The magician winced at the mention of Cheshire and Arsenal's name; she didn't know if Artemis knew but her older sister and her brother-in-law are both wanted fugitives by the League. Still, in fear of spoiling the moment they had, the magician refrained from telling her. Little did she know however, Artemis already knows that her sister and brother-in-law are wanted criminals and in reality, she's a wanted fugitive herself.

Zatanna placed her cup of tea on the coffee table and encompassed the archer in a comforting embrace as she rubbed her back, "I'm so sorry Arty… Had I known…"

"Thanks Zee. It means a lot.", Artemis gave her a struggling smile in response.

"Who was the sideline whore?", Zatanna questioned.

"I don't know, all I know is that the asshole called her his 'Pink Lucky Charm'", Artemis spat-out the last part, the corny and unnecessary nickname almost made her puke her guts out.

"Did you try calling her or tracking her down?"

"I gave her a call using my cell but she didn't pick-up. I tried calling her using Wally's cell and she answered for just a split-second until she heard my voice and dropped the call."

"Well then. At least the whore knows that you now know about their little fling and you're ready to kick her ass."

"Honestly, I don't even care anymore.", Artemis sighed, "I've already cried to my hearts' content the past few days so I've already cried out everything. It still hurts mind you but at least I've finally dealt with the shock. The whore can have him, I won't give any fucks, I know I can and I know I will do better."

"Wally's probably the dumbest idiot alive for going behind your back. That asshole never deserved you in the first place."

"I know.", Artemis smiled, "My sister told me the same thing."

"Still.", Zatanna continued, "If you need someone to be there for you, if you need a shoulder to cry on, just give me a call. My door's always open for you."

Artemis smiled as she gave the magician a warming hug, "Thanks Zee, I appreciate it."

As the night dragged-on, a thought popped into the magician's head.

"Say, you wanna go grab lunch with me this Saturday?", she asked.

"Are you taking me out on a date?", Artemis grinned.

Zatanna retorted with a devilish smirk of her own, "Oh babe I wish, but that's not why I'm offering you. The League just incorporated a few new members into the Team and I was wondering if you'd like to join me in getting to know them."

"Who's the new blood?"

"The Titans, y'know, Dick's old gang from the West Coast. M'gann thought it would be nice if we could get to know some of them."

"Will there be guys coming? I don't wanna be a drag but I'm just not in the mood for testosterone right about now."

"Nah, it's just a girls' day out. Raquel's coming too by the way."

Artemis gave the offer a quick thought before agreeing, "Sure, why not. I'd love to meet these Titans face-to-face."

Zatanna squealed, "Great! I'll call M'gann and tell here we're good to go for Thursday!"

[New York City, New York – Thursday, March 8, 2018 | 11:50 AM]

Artemis sat on a windowside table in a McDonald's somewhere in Downtown Manhattan, Zatanna went out to go give their orders and she spent the last few minutes or so having a delightful chat with the Titans alongside Raq and M'gann.

Koriand'r (or "Starfire" as she'd been told) was definitely the peppiest amongst the entire group, she had the uncanny ability to always be happy and cheerful. Something tells her that that's one of the reasons why she and M'gann got along so well the first time they met. Rachel (or "Raven" as she'd been told) was the silent, calm, and collected one of the group.

Based from the way she dresses and how her skin is unnaturally pale (she was actually told that her skin was actually naturally pale), she was definitely a silent type of gal. Still, she didn't shy away from the conversation and still threw a joke or two every-so-often. Jinx however, was by far the most brash amongst the three of them; she managed to meet her once at Wally's funeral saying that she was a "close friend" of his and that's it.

Eitherway, Artemis knew for a fact that Jinx was most definitely a "party-'till-I-pass-out-and-wake-up-in-a-hotel-bed-with-some-unknown-guy" type of gal. Granted, she did have a history of being a villain since she used to go to the HIVE Academy and was a member of the HIVE Five until she was apparently turned to the good side by some unknown hero. As of now, no-one has ever told her who this hero was and what did he actually do to convince Jinx to change her ways. Still, Artemis believed that he had to be very convincing and persistent if he managed to turn Jinx to the good side once and for all.

The young women's conversation was cut-off by the sound of trays and foodstuffs splattering over at the counter floor, after a few minutes or so, the girls managed to see Zatanna walk on over to their table with an unexpected hunk in-tow.

"I know this'll sound rude but, isn't this a tad too much for you to eat alone?", the anonymous man questioned.

Zatanna giggled, she was carrying a different tray, "I would hulk this food down myself in one go but the people around us ain't gunna like that."

The man chuckled, "You're joking, right?"

"Oh no, I'm definitely serious.", she insisted, "Of course I'm joking! Besides, this food ain't for me alone, I got friends with me here too."

The man then set his sights to the window side table they were approaching. His eyes went wide as a sudden look of surprise graced his face right before it disappeared in an instant as he observed the table that Artemis and the gang were all sitting at.

"Alright girls!", Zatanna announced, "Lunch is served!"

"Took you long enough.", Artemis snickered, "I'm starving."

"Sorry, but I got caught up with Mister Big Man over here.", Zatanna replied as she gestured over to the still unknown individual.

The man lightly bowed and greeted, "Pleasure to meet you, ladies."

"Oooooh.", Raquel cooed, "What's with the chunky hunk?"

"Simple really.", Zatanna answered, "Mister Wilson over here knocked into me as I was heading back to the table and the food I had splattered all-over the floor."

"That was you?", Jinx questioned, "Holy shit, I think I heard the janitor mutter a fuckton of curses as he cleaned-up the mess you two made."

The girls laughed at Jinx's comment.

"As I was saying.", Zatanna continued, "Being the ever-so kind gentleman he is, Mister Wilson offered to pay for a new order and helped me carry all this new grub to all you bitches' hungry stomachs."

The man, now identified as Mister Wilson, chuckled at her summarization, "That was pretty much the gist it, I'm glad I was able to help, Miss Zatara."

Zatanna blushed at the mention of her name, "Just call me Zee, that what these mad bitches and my friends call me."

"Alright then, Zee. Anyways, I need to run, gotta be back at the office by 12:45.", Mister Wilson spoke.

"M'kay.", Zatanna smiled at him as she slid something into his pocket, "See you later Mister Wilson."

Mister Wilson seemed to have given Zatanna a knowing look as she whispered something into his ear. Artemis would definitely tease her about that later.

Smiling, Mister Wilson faced the young women, "Ladies, if you'd excuse me. I'll be taking my leave.", he bowed lightly.

Artemis and her friends fawned over him, "By Will.", they waved dreamily.

"The name's John but sure, why not.", he chuckled.

'Hmmmm. John Wilson, where have I heard that name before…', Artemis wondered.

As John made his way out of the McDonald's, Raquel immediately fussed all-over Zatanna, "Ooooh girllll, you're one lucky bitch!"

Zatanna responded with a playful punch to her arm, "Oh shut up!"

"Gotta say Zee, you got good taste.", Artemis grinned.

A blush crept into the magician's face, "You, shut-up your yap and eat your food already damn it."

The girls simply laughed at Zatanna attempt to cover-up her blush.

It was now well over half an hour and the Titans we're pretty much acquainted with the two League members at this point and vice-versa. It was also at this point that gossip suddenly began to rear its ugly head.

"So.", Raquel began, "Zee said something about you crashing over at her place for a couple of days. Care to explain why?"

"Nothing much.", Artemis answered, "I just wanted to go clear my head and all."

"Clear your head?", M'gann inquired, "Why? What happened?"

"It's nothing major really.", Artemis shrugged, "Ya'll shouldn't get too worked-up about it."

"Aw come on girl!", Raquel insisted, "Just spill the beans already, how bad could it be."

Artemis mood did a full-180 as she finally relented to break the news, "Wally… Wally cheated on me…"

Gasps could be heard from their table as the sudden revelation instantaneously kicked-in.

"W-What?", M'gann asked, she still couldn't believe what she was hearing and nearly dropped her sundae cup in the process.

"Yeah… You heard me right…", Artemis mumbled, "The fucker's apparently been bumping boots with another chick for the past 3 years."

"Who was the other?", Rachel inquired.

"I dunno.", Artemis replied, "Wally hid her name as 'My Pink Lucky Charm'."

Jinx choked on her soda at the mention of the name.

"Hey Jinx, you okay?", Kori asked as she patted the pinkette's back.

"I'm fine.", Jinx answered, "Just choked on my Coke, no biggie.", she then gestured to the blonde archer, "Please, carry-on."

Artemis gave the pinkette a curious yet analytical look, 'She's definitely trying to hide something.'

Eventually, Artemis retold the tale as to how her dead lover had broken her heart by going behind her back for the past 3 years…

[Later That Night...]

[Mount Justice – Thursday, March 8, 2018 | 09:30 PM]

Jinx sighed as she plopped down on her bed within the Cave, on her hand was her phone. The pinkette was currently looking at her contact list, or more specifically, the contact number Artemis gave her hours earlier.

'Oh God… There's no way right? There's no fucking way…', she told herself.

Jinx wanted to deny it, but the number Artemis gave her was the exact same number that gave her a call a few days back; right before she got that pissed-off call from Wally's old cell.

'Man… I am so fucked…'

[Miles Away…]

[New York City, New York – Thursday, March 8, 2018 | 09:40 PM]

Artemis unlocked the door to Zatanna's flat within the heart of Manhattan. The magician was out on meeting with the rest of the Justice League so she won't be home until very late at night.

She yeeted her handbag to the couch as she closed and locked the door behind her. Walking over to the kitchen to get a drink, a particular object piqued her interest as she saw a box that was wrapped in all-black wrapping paper tied together by a neat, white ribbon. Right beneath the box was a hand-written note.

The note read:

"I overheard that you got cheated on by your old boyfriend at the McDonald's today. Before you ask though, no, I wasn't spying on you; I was just coincidentally grabbing lunch when I heard you talk with your friends. I know having your heart broken sucks, believe me, I've had more heartbreaks than I could count but still, I may be a tyrant but I always look after my friends. It ain't much, but I got you a little something-something and I hope you appreciate it. Just know that if you want someone to talk to, I'll be ready to hear you out whenever wherever.

P.S. Don't ask as to how I know where your friend lives or how I got into her apartment, I got my ways. I'll see you soon 'Mis."

Artemis immediately rushed to open the wrapped box silently hoping and praying that it wasn't a bomb.

Her eyes grew wide and she covered her mouth in astonishment as she tore off the paper wrappings; Renegade got her a brand-new iPhone X.

Artemis didn't know if she should be stunned beyond belief, cry with joy, blush from the sweet gesture he gave her, or all of the above.

'I guess Renegade isn't so bad of a villain after all…'
