Author's note: Hey guys! I know it's been a minute but here's a new fic. This is probably going to be the last one-shot I write within Blindspot. I am however going to be posting a Blindspot and Law and Order SVU crossover fic and hopefully chapter 1 will be up next week but other than that, that's about it.
TW: Complications during childbirth
Before you read: In my mind this fic takes place in season 4. Let's pretend that in the deleted scene of Jane taking a pregnancy test in s3, it came back positive. Also, no this is not an add on to a previous story called An Anniversary Surprise.
Disclaimer: I do not own Blindspot or the characters. They all belong to Martin Gero, NBC, and Warner Brothers Production.
The Time has Come
It was a long day at work. Jane insisted on still coming in every day despite the fact that she was 37 and a half weeks pregnant and Kurt's objection. Their OB-GYN had said it was ok as long as she wasn't doing anything strenuous. Kurt had reduced her to desk duty from the moment she told him she was pregnant. He didn't want anything to happen to Jane let alone the baby and was being extra protective over his wife.
At around 10am, Jane started to get a light headache. An hour later she started getting a stomach ache but stopped a few minutes later. Twenty minutes later, it happened again but only lasted a minute. Jane was pretty sure she knew what was going on but she called her doctor just in case.
"This is Dr. Page." answered the phone.
"Hi. It's Jane." Jane said back.
"Oh hello Jane! How can I help you?" she asked.
"Well I started to get a headache and and I think I'm having Braxton hicks contractions." She continued.
"Alright, how long have those been lasting.?" Dr. Page asked.
"They have been happening for the last week but stopped yesterday and started again today. Sometimes they last a few minutes, sometimes more." Jane told her.
"Well those do sound like Braxton hicks. That's just a sign that your body is preparing you for labor. Regular contractions should probably start a few days later if not sooner." Dr. Page explained.
"Ok. thank you." Jane said.
"Of course any time." Dr. Page responded and hung up the phone.
Jane got back to work filling out papers and taking calls. The contractions seemed to have stopped. At noon, Kurt came over and asked if she wanted to get lunch.
"Yes! I'm starving." Jane exclaimed.
"What should we get?" Kurt questioned as he helped Jane stand.
"A salad sounds really good right now." Jane suggested.
"Alright. Salad it is." Kurt agreed.
They headed into Kurt's office.
"Aren't we going to walk? The salad place is right across the street." Jane inquired.
"Nope, They are going to come to us." He said typing on his phone. "What do you want?"
"You know I can walk right?" Jane giggled.
"I know, but I don't want to." Kurt claimed.
Jane smiled, "I'll have a Caesar salad."
"One Caesar salad coming up." Kurt said. He was oddly cheerful today.
"What's gotten into you?" Jane asked "You're never this happy."
"You saying I can never be happy?" Kurt joked
"No, no it's just different. I like it. No one ever gets to see the happy Kurt besides me." Jane said.
Kurt just smiled at that. "Ok, lunch should be here in 20 minutes." He added
"Sounds good. I'm going to take a little nap while I wait." Jane announced as she made her way over to the couch in the corner. Kurt sat back down at his desk and continued to answer emails.
Twenty minutes later, Kurt got a call saying that the food was in the lobby. He left the office and returned shortly with the food. He set the food on the table and woke up Jane.
When they were done eating, Jane went back to her desk and Kurt continued work. A few hours later, Jane felt a sharp pain in her stomach. It was stronger than last time and she felt it in a different area of her belly as well as her lower back. She tried to suppress the pain but Kurt was watching her through his window. He got up and walked over to Jane's desk
"Hey, are you ok?" Kurt worried.
"Yeah, I'm fine." she said with a soft smile. "It was just some back pain."
"Maybe we should go home?" Kurt offered. He knew that back pain was an impending sign of labor.
"Don't you have a ton of work to do?" Jane responded.
Kurt looked at the pile of papers on his desk. "I'll finish it tomorrow. It's just paperwork that can wait." Kurt said.
"Okay." Jane whispered.
Just then another contraction hit. She closed her eyes tightly to try to cover it up but Kurt was already by her side.
"Woah, Jane." He cautioned as he helped support her.
Jane opened her eyes once it passed. "It's ok." said mumbled. "I'm fine."
"Let's get you home." Kurt suggested.
Kurt texted Reade to let him know that he was leaving. He put his arm around Jane and they walked to the car. During the ride home, two more contractions came. He had one hand on Jane's shoulder rubbing it and one on the wheel. When they got home, Kurt helped her into the apartment and guided her to the couch. He went to the kitchen and got a glass of water.
When he came back he asked, "Are you timing them?"
Jane nodded as she showed him her phone. He looked and saw that they were very spread apart. They were still too far for them to go to the hospital. Doctor Page had said in order to be admitted the contractions needed to be 5 minutes lasting for about a minute for an hour. Another reason to come in was if her water broke or there was another issue with her health.
Throughout the rest of the day, the contractions came and went. Each one was more painful then the one before. It was eventually night fall and Kurt joined Jane in the room. He walked in and saw Jane standing at the foot of the bed with her head down and eyes closed. She was riding out another contraction.
"How's the pain?" He asked.
Jane just ignored him so he went over to where she was and helped her into bed and then joined her on the other side.
"Why don't you try and sleep." he offered "It might take your mind off the contractions."
Jane nodded and then closed her eyes. She awoke a few hours later to another contraction. This one was even stronger. She couldn't help but cry out in pain. Kurt woke up and looked over at the clock. It was 4:30 in the morning. At least she was able to sleep for a few hours. He got up and was by Jane's side. She held onto him as yet another contraction passed. He looked at the timer and this was the first one that lasted a minute.
Kurt went over to the bathroom and started a bath. He had read online that taking a warm bath can help manage contractions. He came back over and guided Jane to the bathroom. He helped her get undressed and into the tub. Another contraction had begun. She held onto Kurt's arm and whimpered in pain. He knew she had a high pain tolerance but nothing could prepare her for this.
Once they were finished, Kurt helped her out and dried her off. He looked at the timer and it had only been 20 minutes. He helped Jane get dressed in a shirt and sweatpants and led her to the couch. As they were walking over Jane had another contraction. She grabbed onto Kurt as she screamed in pain; tears gathered in her eyes.
"Kurt I don't think I can do this." She whimpered.
"Hey! Of course you can. You want to know how I know? You are the strongest person and we will get through this. Together" He said softly kissing her forehead.
Jane took a deep breath and laid down on the couch. Kurt stayed by her side the entire time and helped stabilize her when she had contractions.
An hour had finally gone by. Kurt got the hospital bag and helped Jane to the car. They were walking out of the apartment when Jane came to an abrupt stop. Kurt turned to see her frozen in one spot. He looked up at Jane in confusion.
"Kurt, I think my water broke." she said looking down at the puddle that was by her feet.
"Oh. I see." Kurt said looking down.
He didn't quite know what to do other than get Jane to the hospital. He quickly ran over and grabbed a towel and wiped it up. They got into the car and made their way to the maternity wing of the hospital. One the way there, Kurt called Dr. Page.
When they arrived at the hospital, medical staff were already standing by the door. They set Jane in the wheelchair and wheeled her to her room. A nurse strapped a fetal monitor around her belly and told them that it was used to monitor the baby's heartbeat as well as the mother's contractions. The nurse also checked Jane's vitals which seemed to be good.
Dr. Page came in right away. She checked to see how dilated Jane was. Jane winced as she performed the procedure.
"You're 5 centimeters dilated." she said. "Will you be getting an epidural today?
Jane shook her head no.
"Alright, if you change your mind, let the nurse know. I'll be back to check on you soon." she told them and exited.
Kurt looked up at Jane. He was surprised she said no to the epidural considering how much pain she'd been in.
"How come you didn't get the epidural." he finally asked.
"I want to do it naturally." Jane said "No drugs."
Just then another contraction came. She cried out in pain, tears filling her eyes once more. Kurt held on to Jane's hand wishing he could take away her pain. When the contraction was over she caught her breath and looked over at Kurt. He gave her a concerned look.
"Are you sure, you don't want the epidural? It might make you more comfortable." He suggested
"I'm fine." Jane whimpered.
Every hour, Dr. Page came back in and checked her dilation. It had been 4 hours and Jane only progressed to a 7. She suggested to the couple that walking and bouncing on a ball might help speed things up.
Kurt got up and helped Jane out of bed. He put his arm around Jane to help support her and they did some laps around the ward. They passed a few other couples on their walk. They too were trying to speed things up.
When they got back to the room, the doctor checked once more. She was still at a 7. The doctor started palpating Jane's abdomen which was firm.
"Your labor doesn't seem to be progressing so we're going to give you a pill called Pitocin. It should help speed up the process. Your contractions will start becoming quicker and or stronger so we're going to monitor you very closely. If that doesn't work, we might have to send you for a C-section." Dr. Page told the couple
Jane looked at Kurt worriedly.
"Can you give us a minute?" He asked.
"Of course, I'll be right outside." Dr. Page responded.
Once she was gone Jane spoke up.
"I don't want the pill." Jane begged.
"It's only going to help you. You heard the doctor, your labor isn't progressing." Kurt pressed.
"I know but I want to do this on my own." Jane pleaded
"I know you do baby but nothing seems to be working." Kurt explained.
Jane looked up at Kurt, her lip was trembling. Tears started to well up in her eyes.
"Will you do this for me?" he asked as he grabbed Jane's hand.
"Okay." she said in a small voice.
With that, Kurt opened the door to let the doctor back in.
"We'll do it." He told her.
Dr. Page handed Jane the pill and some water. She took it and swallowed.
"We're going to check on you about every 15 minutes." Dr. Page said.
Jane nodded and the doctor left. Kurt grabbed Jane's hand and kissed it.
The doctor was right. Jane's contractions started becoming increasingly stronger and closer together. They were coming every 4 minutes.
Jane screamed out in pain each time a contraction came around. Kurt had never seen her like this. Her eyes gathered with tears and she couldn't keep it together. Between contractions, Jane was only able to catch her breath before another one came.
The first time the nurse checked Jane, she said she was now at a 8. The pill seems to be working. The second time, however, the nurse noticed that the baby's heart rate was decreasing. She notified Dr. Page and she was in there within seconds. She assessed the situation and came to the conclusion that each time Jane had a contraction, the baby's heart rate was decreasing. Jane was also starting to fade.
"Jane, stay with us." Kurt called out.
Dr. Page and the nurse shared a few words before she finally said, "Your wife and baby's heart rate are decreasing. We need to perform an emergency C-section now."
"Ok. Just do what you have to Kurt." blurted out. The sound of his voice was more concerned than ever.
"Wheel her up to the OR. I'll be right up." Dr. Page instructed the nurse.
She walked over to Kurt.
"It's going to be ok Kurt. Jane has the best team with her and we will make sure that everything goes smoothly." She reassured her. "I'll take you to the waiting room where you can wait."
Once he was in the waiting room, he called Reade.
"Hey Kurt! How's Jane?" He asked, getting right to the point.
"She's in labor but it wasn't progressing. They gave her a pill to speed it up but it caused the Baby and Jane's heart rate to drop. They just took her up for an emergency C-section." Kurt responded, the worry in his voice obvious.
"Aw man I'm sorry. Is there anything we can do?" Reade asked
"I don't think so. We just have to watch and wait." Kurt responded with a shaky voice.
"Do you want us to be there?" Reade offered.
"That would be great actually." he admitted.
"Alright, we'll be right over." Reade assured him.
"Thanks man." Kurt said before he hung up.
He sat back in the chair and closed his eyes, hoping that everything was going as smoothly as Dr. Page said.
Once Jane was in the operating room, the anesthesiologist came and put her under general anesthesia. The doctors got to work performing the surgery. Twenty-five minutes later at 2:47pm a healthy baby girl was born. She was 6 pounds 8 ounces. As they started to work on the baby, the monitor started going off. Jane was losing a lot of blood and her blood pressure was dropping. Fortunately, they were able to get everything under control. After they stitched Jane up, they wheeled her into recovery.
The team had finally arrived and met Kurt in the waiting room.
"Thanks for being here." He said
"Of course, How's Jane doing?" Patterson asked
"I don't know. She went up about an hour ago." Kurt answered.
A few minutes later, Doctor Page reemerged. Kurt got up and went over to her .
"The surgery was a success. You have a healthy baby girl. Jane did lose a lot of blood but we were able to get it under control and she'll make a full recovery." Dr. Page told him.
"Thank you! When can I see her?" Kurt asked.
"I'll take you up right now. She's still sedated but should wake up soon." Dr. Page explained.
Kurt motioned for the team to follow him as Dr. Page led them to where Jane and the baby were. A nurse was also in the room, taking care of the baby. Kurt first went over to his wife and then their baby.
"Do you have a name?" asked Reade.
Kurt smiled, "Hannah. Hannah Marie Weller." He said softly.
"That's beautiful." gushed Tasha.
Just then, Jane was starting to wake up. She fixed her eyes on Kurt and then the basket holding the baby. Kurt picked Hannah up and went over to Jane. He placed her in Jane's arms.
"You did it. I'm so proud of you." Kurt expressed, kissing her forehead.
Jane looked up at him and smiled as happy tears started streaming down her face. She looked around the room and noticed the team standing there.
"You guys came?" She exclaimed.
"Of course, we wouldn't miss this for the world." Patterson said.
Jane looked down at Hannah. "Welcome to the world Hannah Marie." she softly whispered. "I'm your mommy."
She looked up and giggled.
"You three get together, I want to take a picture." Patterson stated.
Kurt moved closer and put his arm around Jane. She wiped her face and smiled.
"Alright, 1...2...3" Patterson counted. "Got it. I'll send it to you".
Doctor Page came back in and asked them how they were doing. Everyone in the room was smiling which answered her question. She updated Kurt and Jane saying she would be staying in the hospital for the night. They wanted to make sure everything went smoothly and no complications arrived after the fact. Jane thanked her for everything and then she left.
They all hung out in the room taking turns holding Hannah. After eating dinner, the team left leaving Kurt and Jane in a quiet room.
Jane looked up at Kurt and smiled, "Life is perfect."
"You're prefect." Kurt responded. "And so are you." He said looking down at his daughter.
"I love you." Jane yawned
"I love you too." Kurt replied. "Maybe it's time to get some sleep.
Jane nodded placing Hannah in the bassinet they brought. Kurt climbed in next to Jane and drifted off to sleep.
The next day, they were discharged and the new family of three headed home to start their new life.
