Part Three
11. Hellfire - Hunchback of Notre Dame
She's beautiful.
Turpin eyes his ward, his chest tight. Johanna's wearing the new dress he purchased for her. Red with a scooping neckline, decorated with gold. It's tight around her chest and waist. Delightful shivers run up and down his body.
It's not his fault she's this beautiful. It's not his fault she looks so much like her mother. The devil tempts him every night to do what he pleased with her. To take her like he took her mother.
Johanna's only fourteen now. One day she will make a beautiful wife. Turpin can hardly wait for their wedding night.
12. Wait for Me (Reprise) - Hadestown
Anthony travels in front, holding her hand, as Johanna wanders behind him. She keeps her head down and counts her heartbeats. They come faster now. One, two, three. She can not breathe.
There's dried blood on her clothes. From the blood-soaked chair. Johanna can feel its crispness.
They're going down a new road. She's never seen this one before, but Anthony knows the way. Johanna tightens her grip on his hand.
Footsteps approach. Anthony speeds up, looking over his shoulder. Tears spring to Johanna's eyes.
"Wait for me," she whispers.
Anthony slows down and links arms with her, walking side-by-side.
13. A Conversation - Mary Poppins Returns
It's like Lucy's here.
"Johanna looks like you, doesn't she?" Sweeney asks, sharpening his razors.
Lucy would wrap her arms around him, snuggling into his neck. Sweeney smiles. He would reach out and run his hands through her hair. She would laugh.
"She must ask hundreds of questions."
Sweeney would kiss her lips. As she pulled away Lucy would beam up at him. She was always smiling.
"She's kind. And sweet."
Lucy would press her lips on his cheek.
"Like you."
The blurry years have gone by.
"You teach her everything you know, don't you, my love?"
Lucy doesn't answer.
14. Stay Alive (Reprise) - Hamilton
Johanna's bleeding to death.
Sweeney throws the closed sign over his door. He doesn't put on his coat before following the messenger. To his daughter.
Lucy's outside knocking with a shaky hand. Sweeney doesn't hesitate to barge inside the house, taking his wife in with him. They haven't spoken since Lucy learned of the lives he took. None of that matters now. Their daughter is dying.
"Is she alright?" Lucy asks, voice quivering.
"Miss Barker was attacked by a man."
Sweeney doesn't care. He needs to see his daughter.
He just got her back.
Lucy sobs as the door opens.
15. Everything Changes - Waitress
Johanna didn't know herself until her son is born. She's a mother. Just like that. She holds her baby to her chest, peering down at his little face. Johanna already sees Anthony in him, with a spring of golden hair.
Benjamin. They like the name Benjamin.
Her son is a Benjamin.
Anthony enters the room. Johanna can't hide her tears from him. Everything's in focus now.
"He's beautiful," Anthony says, "He looks like you."
Johanna shakes her head, but her tight throat prevents her from arguing. The sun beams down on them from her window. She'll do anything for Benjamin.
