Lorcan and Lysander Scamander

September 1st, 2021

"I can't believe they're going off to Hogwarts." Luna said to Rolf, sporting a goofy goodbye hat atop her head.

"Darling," with a flick of his wand, Luna's hat found its way into her purse "they're going to love it. And I'm sure they'll have plenty of friends to look to if they're ever lost." Rolf unfurled the Daily Prophet, reading the article he'd recently written on the Unicorns of the Forbidden Forest.

"Well, I'm not sure they'll have any friends if they're Ravenclaws like myself. The Potters and Weaselys were all sorted into Gryffindor, save for Albus in Slytherin." Luna said "And we've never been anyone's favorite guest at Dumbledore's Army Reunions."

"I was there just as much as you." Rolf says "I may have been a quiet Hufflepuff boy. But I wanted to avenge Cedric."

"What if they're sorted into separate houses?" Luna asked, watching her boys sit with Lily Potter and Hugo Weasely, both proudly sporting Gryffindor scarves.

"Don't you worry. Our boys will be just fine. Wave goodbye. They'll be home for Christmas." Rolf escorted a rather teary-eyed Luna off Platform 9 as the Hogwarts express zoomed away.

"What house do you two think you'll be in?" Hugo asked around a chocolate frog, Lily rolling her eyes at the boy's disgusting habits.

"Not sure." Lorcan said, delicately caring for his chocolate frog, rather than eating it.

"Eat your food Lorc." Lysander commented "I'd bet Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw like Mum and Dad. I just hope they've got a killer Qudditch team."

"You aren't Uncle Harry Ly. You're not going to be a first year Keeper." Lorcan said, finally eating his chocolate frog.

"You reckon you'll be in the same house?" Lily asked, looking through to the compartment across the way where her older brother Albus and Scorpius Malfoy sat.

"The hat knows what's best." Lorcan said.

"I don't see why we count on a bloody hat." Lysander kicked his feet up onto the bench "I reckon I'd do mighty fine in Gryffindor."

"Be my guest." Lorcan sat back, reading his great-grandfather's book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. "I'll be a Ravenclaw. It's destiny."

"Can't catch a break with this bookworm." Lysander sighed "Bet he wouldn't even watch a Quidditch game if I was playing."

"I've always supported you as my brother Lysander." Lorcan snapped the book closed. "Clearly you lack that respect for me." Lorcan stormed out of the compartment, what he was looking for he wasn't sure. He was so lost in thought he bumped into someone.

"Merlin, I'm sorry." he stepped back adjusting his glasses "I didn't see you there."

"That's alright. Why are you wandering the train?" the girl asked.

"I could ask you to ponder the same question." Lorcan quipped.

"Very well. I'm on a search for my toad. My father begged me to not make the same mistake as him but here I am." she noticed Lorcan's smirk. "You're not helping you know."

"No, no. I'm sorry. I've just realized you're the mysterious Alice Longbottom. It's nice to meet you, I'm Lorcan Scamander." he shook her hand "I'll help you find your toad." Lorcan made an odd sound and a toad came hopping up to them.

"There you are!" Alice tucked the toad into a small cage. "It's nice to meet you as well. But I'm not mysterious. Just a first year. Like you."

"Sorry, that's not what I meant. Just that your father seems to not come to the little reunion parties the Potter's throw every year in Godric's Hollow." Lorcan said shyly.

"My father is happy about the defeat but his parents never recovered. My grandparents still live with the effects." Alice said "Mum has begged, but he feels no one recognized his bravery in defeating a Horcrux. It's hard."

"I'm sorry. Mum reminisces about it every year, toasting in his absence." Lorcan says "Would you like to meet a Potter and a Weasley? My twin brother Lysander is there too, though he's not worth much."

"Sure." Alice joined Lorcan upon his return.

"You got a girlfriend in the five minutes you were gone?" Lysander asked.

"You're the worst. This is Alice Longbottom." Lorcan introduced.

The three first years and two third years spent the rest of the train ride together, splitting when they got to Hogwarts. They were waiting to be sorted patiently, listening to McGonagall instructions.

"Alice Longbottom" McGonagall called. Lorcan gave her a supportive smile.

"Hmmm...yes...oh...okay.." the sorting hat grumbled "RAVENCLAW!" it shouted. Her father, Herbology professor Neville Longbottom clapped supportively, even though he was head of Hufflepuff.

"Lorcan Scamander." McGonagall brought the boy forward. The hat barely touched his head before bellowing a resounding "RAVENCLAW!" he happily took his spot next to Alice watching Lysander be sorted.

"Hmm...how interesting...very well.." the sorting hat took its time "GRYFFINDOR!" McGonagall, along with many of the other professors were shocked. Rarely were twins in different houses. But Lysander smiled and joined the Potters and the Weasleys, not even looking back at his twin brother. Lorcan, on the other hand, quickly lost his appetite, and was more than ready for bed when the prefect helped them answer the riddle to get into Ravenclaw Tower.

"Lorcan?" Alice asked softly, before the boy could disappear up the stairs. He looked to her tiredly, his cat now perched precariously on his shoulders. "Are you alright?"

"I'll be fine. Goodnight Alice." Lorcan disappeared up the stairs.

"Scamander huh?" one of his roommates asked

"Yeah. Why?" he tucked his trunk away under his bed.

"Well, your brother and you are an anomaly." Cedric Chang, Cho Chang's son, mentioned.

"Lysander and I aren't that special for being different." Lorcan said. "The Patil twins were in different houses."

"My mother and aunt were indeed." Aman Goldstein said, son of Padma Patil and Anthony Goldstein.

"I forgot about that." the first boy said "Name's Connor Corner. Dad didn't really think out how annoying my name would be"

"Well it's a pleasure to meet you all but I'd like to be well rested for classes tomorrow." Lorcan admitted.

"Hey, we just wanted you to know just cause your brother isn't a Ravenclaw doesn't mean you'll be alone okay?" Donovan Smith said.

"Yeah. I understand. If any of you want a copy of the Prophet let me know. My dad can hook you up." Lorcan relaxed. He was going to like Hogwarts a lot.
