"Hannah... It's you, isn't it? I can tell."
The Wendigo that was larger than the others looked at Sam, who had said those words. Its eyes no longer has hostility towards her, but recognition is in its place. Sam walked towards the creature that was her best friend slowly as to not startle her. As she puts one knee down, the two stared at each other for a few seconds before she puts a hand on her shoulder. She is then surrounded by two very long arms as Hannah hold her tight searching for comfort and love. Despite being engulfed by the armor-like skin she has now, Sam returned the hug and began comforting caresses towards her reunited friend.
In the midst of this moment between the two girls, Mike slowly walked towards their direction. He felt safe with Hannah regaining her humanity.
"Sam..." Hannah began speaking in a shaky voice as they let go of the hug. It's been a while since she had spoken after being turned into a Wendigo. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, Hannah. You weren't yourself at the time, so I don't blame you for trying to kill me," Sam reassured her.
"Thank you," Hannah said with relief as tears ran down from her eyes. She hadn't cried for a while after being turned into a Wendigo. The two girls hugged each other again, happy that they're able to find each other again after losing contact with one another after the incident last year.
"Hannah..." Mike approached them as they let go of the hug just in time to see him.
"Mike..." the Wendigo spoke his name.
"I'm so sorry about what happened last year," he apologized.
"I forgive you," she responded before hugging him. Mike never thought how strong she was in this state, and he returned the hug. "I've always loved you."
"I know..." he said with a small smile on his face.
Mike and Hannah let go of the hug just in time to see more Wendigos, smaller than Hannah, approaching their direction.
"We don't have much time. You guys have any idea how to get out of this situation?" she said.
"Well, we thought of blowing up the cabin. Wendigos can be killed by fire," Mike replied.
"Good, let's do that," she agreed to the suggestion.
"Wait, you're not seriously thinking...?" Sam realizes why Hannah agreed to the idea. "Hannah, I just found you again. I don't wanna lose you again!"
"Sam, look at me. I'm a Wendigo, a monster. The Makkapitew's spirit is still inside me and if I don't go down, it will possess me again to kill you guys. I don't want you to die because of me!" Hannah cried.
"Hannah..." Sam uttered.
"Besides, monsters in horror movies don't get to live happily ever afters. Not even the ones who regained control of themselves in their very last moments," the Wendigo sadly spoke the truth.
Realizing how right she is, the blonde girl hugged her friend once more, and Hannah returned it with the knowledge it will be the last time they'll see each other.
"You're the best friend I ever had," Hannah spoke the words that may be her last.
"When Sam and I get out of here, I'll tell them you've saved us," Mike said as the two girls let go of the hug, and Hannah nodded in acknowledgement for this next course of action.
One Wendigo attempted to tackle them, but Hannah catches it quickly and cuts it down with her bare hands. Sam and Mike run up to the switch, and Hannah looked at them with a smile on her face. The smile may be a bit creepy considering the shape of her mouth, but it's a sincere smile, nonetheless. This will reassure them that everything is going to be okay through her sacrifice. At least she will die not as a monster, but as a hero.
Having thought through of the plan, they flipped the switch to cause an explosion in the cabin that will take every Wendigo inside, including Hannah. Unlike the ones who died screaming in agony, she accepted her death calmly in this fiery blaze knowing that she can be free from her pain once and for all. Even if she knew that the Makkapitew's spirit will leave her body once she dies and it will hunt down for more potential hosts in the future, she felt satisfied in beating the monster inside her. That should be a great bittersweet ending to the horror movie her life had become.
As Sam and Mike were thrown by the explosion, the rescue team has come for them. They were taken to the police station to narrate what had happened in the cabin.
"What the hell happened?" Emily asked.
"Hannah saved us," Mike replied with neutrality on his face. He wanted to tell them the truth about Hannah sacrificing herself to save him and Sam, but he wasn't sure if he should hate Emily for the prank last year that led to one of their own becoming a Wendigo. After all, he did stopped himself from shooting her in the face back then, so maybe letting her live with what she had done could be the best revenge since she couldn't do anything to make up for this.
"Hannah? But she's dead!" Emily is not believing what she just heard.
"Nevertheless, she died being a hero, unlike you," Sam countered. She wouldn't forgive her for the prank that costed her the life of her friend, and she never will. It felt good for her to tell off Emily like this.
As far as Sam and Mike are concerned, they know that wherever Hannah is now after this, she has found her peace at last.
Author's Note: What do you think for my first Until Dawn fanfiction story? Hannah deserves better, wouldn't you agree?
