Chapter 1 The Journey Begins.
"Nothing is true, everything is permitted." These words were spoken to me by my father as they were spoken to him by his father. These word may not mean much to you but to our family it means the difference between the prosperity of all sentient life and their enslavement. These words my grandfather said help me when I'm in the dark with no direction. When I'm about to take a life, they come to the forefront of my mind to remind myself that our world isn't black and white. That one man's truth is another man's lie and vise-versa. That we can't take anything at face value. That when it come to doing what I must for the greater good I must do so with restraint but with conviction and accept the consequences of my actions.
You may be wondering why I'm writing this down. The truth is if you're reading this then that means you found the means to read what I'm writing so you are either friend or foe. Either way my hope is you learn from the lessons in this Codex. That the story of my Grandfather Jaune Arc shows you the way to help those in need. To show not all those who seek to be a hero are the one in the light. To show our paths are not set. That they bend, twist and take us to places that we could never dream of, or ever saw our-self's going. On this codex I made is the life and death of our first Grand-master. Where he came from and where he ended up. How he cashed his dreams. How he grew and how those dreams changed. How he fought with himself and how his friends brought him back. How he fought the forces of evil that sought to destroy both humanity and Faunus kind. How he made our order and gave us the directive to preserve peace and stability for the common people. Our story starts off in a small but prosperous town of Berg on the northern most island of the Kingdom of Vale. This is where my Grandfather started his journey to be a hero he always dreamed of.
The Island town of Berg was small but was well protected and populated. It has mountains to the north for natural barrier form the northern cold that blows down form Atlas. To the south it has a high 80 foot tall metal wall that streaks for 15miles farm east to west to complete the barrier the mountains already provided. The population was about 6 thousand people. This town was a lumber town/ farm town inside and outside of the protective wall. They provide food for the vale/. They might not make the most food but they make enough to warrant a couple of year round hunters and huntress to keep watch over the town to fight back the enemy of human and faunus kind. The Grim. They have been and enemy since time immemorial.
On a bright and cool fall day we find a young man of 17 leaning against a large oak tree with a tire swing swaying in the breeze and the sun shining brightly in his bright blond hair. A soft melody playing in the wind as he strums his guitar with his bright blue eyes closed.
Tonight, Jaune thinks to himself. My bag is packed. All I need to do is grab Crocea Mors and I'm on my way to Beacon.
The anxiety roaring in his ear, and missing a chord ruining the soft melody in the clearing. He sighs. They will be angry but I need to do this. looking up into the burnt orange leaves of the Ancient oak tree. The sun shining through as wind blew and racking leaves from its withered branches.
"Juane dinner is ready! Stop being a brooder and come and eat," yells an equally blond girl from the porch of a large two-story house. A hundred years old, paint chipped and chimney bricks cracked—it was worn.
"I'm coming, June," Jaune replies to his younger sister. Standing up and stretching out to his full height of 6'2 and picking up his guitar and heading in for one final dinner with 5 of his sisters and his parents before he leaves for Beacon. Going in and setting his guitar next to the back door, he heads to the large mahogany table in the dining room. Sitting around the table were 5 of his 7 sisters. Saffron and Elizabeth being the only ones missing. June, his twin, sitting to the right of him. B.B. the third oldest on her right. Maggy the one closest in age to June and him on his left. Next to Maggy is Ebony and next to her is the youngest Livi. The last two at the large dinner table are Sunny and Sapphire Arc. Around the table is a large dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, with garlic bread.
Not my favorite but it will do, Jaune thinks to himself. Looking around the table he can't help but feel melancholy as he takes it all in.
Watching his sisters talk about their day, about what boy bands are in or the tests they have. Not really zoning out but just watching and burning their faces into his brain. Tonight is the last night for a long while before I can see them again, Jaune thinks.
"Jaune, dear, are you okay?" his mother asks him from across the table. Her deep blue eyes stare at him. "You haven't hardly touched your food, love."
"I'm fine, Mom, just tired. It was a long day the store," Jaune responds. Talking about the franchise store Dust till Dawn. Thinking back to when he started there part time in school to both help his parents but to also fund his trip to Vale so he can get into Beacon. To follow his dream of becoming a huntsman so he can be a hero like he always wanted. To be like his father. Even if it was against what both of his parents wanted for him. Knowing it was his destiny to be a huntsman, he wasn't going to let anything stand in his way. Even if that means learning to wield the family sword on his way to the huntsman Academy.
"If you're sure, dear," his mother once again interrupt his thoughts. Though the look she gives him seems like she doesn't quite believe him. But she drops it. He went back to his food and starts to put it away like he wasn't ever going to eat again. Not noticing it but his father gave him a solemn look from the side but didn't say anything. Dinner went on and after it he helped with cleaning the table and doing the dishes with his mother. She didn't say anything but she was humming a soft song that reminded him of his childhood of her rubbing his back after a nightmare and luling him back to sleep. As they finished they made their way to the family room where B.B., June and His father were still up. He walked past them and said he was going to bed. They all said good night. Walking through the house he couldn't help but wonder if he was doing the right thing. Seeing ghosts of his childhood running around with his sisters, or more to the point him running away from them as they tried to dress him up in dresses.
He smiles sadly as he continued up to his room. As he went up the stairs he say a picture of all 7 of his sisters plus him a picture. This is one of the times they caught him but all they did was put his hair up in pigtail. They all sat or were leaving off the coach with giant smiles save for him he had a sign that said help me writing on it. He laughed at that. He may have hated it then but thinking about it now he wouldn't trade any of it. He finally made it to his corner room. He had 4 windows in it 2 on the north side and 2 on the east side to let in plenty of light during the day so he kept a few plants in the windows to bring in some color. His sisters called him girly for that but he thought it was nice to put some effort in keeping something other than himself alive. As he looked around his dark room. The glow of the shattered moon makes his room glow by making it look like an old back and white comic book. He can't help but be sad to leave. But knowing in the next few hours he wouldn't be back. He steeled his nerves and started to triple check his gear bag.
"KNOCK, NOCK!".
Two solid hits to his door started him out of his checklist. His fathers deep voice bellowed out from the other side.
" We are all headed to bed, jaune your mother and I love you." he said. From the other side of the door.
"Love you dad" replied Jaune. He then heard him say the same thing 5 more times on his way to his bedroom.
Sweating slightly from the near heart attack. Thinking he been caught he finished his checks and put the bag by the door. He went to his desk in the corner and turned on the lamp and started to write a letter.
" Hopefully I'll be too far gone for them to come and get me". Jaune thought.
He then sat on his bed and waited for a few hours in the dark. Wait for the dark night to sweep into his home. Waiting for the slow breath of his family to fill up the house. Once he was sure they were all asleep he made his way down to the living room. There above the old stone fireplace sat the ancestral sword of the Arc family. It sat in a scabbard of white with yellow accents in the middle. Its handle Wrapped in blue cloth the hit in white same as the scabbard. He grabbed it from its resting place and headed to the back door. Sneaking through the house and not makinging a sound he made it to his guitar he left by the door so he could grab it and head out. He took a look back then headed out into the dark cool night. Not realizing as he walked to the road a dark tall figure was standing in one of the windows watching him leave.
