What's In a Name

Jack awoke to Sam snuggled into his side and her face nuzzled into his neck, so warm and nice. He vaguely remembered her coming into his room in the middle of the night complaining that they, Daniel, Teal'c and himself that is, had just left her on the couch asleep and why should he get a big bed all to himself. It didn't bother him that she wanted to share, he was actually quite ecstatic to share his bed with her.

It's just he and the guys didn't want to wake her when they decided to head to bed. She was getting much needed sleep and she looked peaceful.

Sam started to stir and he smiled while staring at the ceiling. Then he started to feel her kissing on his neck. 'Hello!' He thought to himself as she picked her head up and looked at him. Her hair was mussed and she had a sleepy look about her. Her face was flushed and she was smiling at him. She couldn't have looked more beautiful in that moment. 'God, how did I get this lucky?' he asked himself.

In a groggy sleepy voice, "Good morning."

Jack smiled back at her, "Yes, yes it is, so beautiful." His smile widened.

She leaned over him and gave him a morning kiss. 'I could totally get used to this,' he thought. The kiss deepened and now her hands were cradling both sides of his face. Her leg moved between his. His hands were sliding up and down her back. Things were starting to get pretty heated. Pretty soon Sam had positioned her body on his. His whole body was awake and on fire.

He could hear the guys out in the kitchen, so he tenderly grabbed her face and pulled them out of the kiss. His heart was pounding as he was trying to catch his breath and cool down his libido when he said, "As much as I REALLY want to do this, I don't think this the right time."

Sam nodded and slowly climbed off him sitting off to his side near his abdomen with her knees pulled up to her chest. He turned to his side and supported his head with his hand. His other hand wrapped around her ankle, his thumb gently rubbing in circles. He watched her as she was trying to catch her breath too, but with a disappointed look falling on her face.

"I know and I'm sorry, but…the guys are right out there."

She gave him a small understanding smile. Then she had a mischievous glint in her eye and grin. "Are you telling me you're loud?"

He barked out a laugh then started coughing. He could not believe she just asked that. He felt a hint of flush climb upon his face from embarrassment. Jack cleared his throat before replying amusingly, "Uh, no, I can be pretty quiet. I am trained black ops you know." Then he gave her a sheepish grin, "I can't say that about my knees…though."

It was her turn to laugh.

"I'm more worried that Daniel is going to barge in here and try to have some discussion while we're…you know." Waving his hand around, "talking about how Karma Sutra is based on this or that…" then giving her a hard look, "Unless…you are…"

It was her turn to be shocked and embarrassed. She quietly replied, "No." She seemed to be studying his face. Clearing her throat and speaking more confident, "Is that the real reason?"

He looked at her for a second, "No, I would like for us to get used to this…Us…thing a little more than a day." He gave her a hopeful smile before continuing, "We're still getting used to calling each other by each other's first name. That should be natural, right?" he asked shrugging his shoulder.

Giving him a grin, "You don't want me to call you…Sir?" she replied raising her eyebrows suggestively.

Jack started coughing again, 'Man, this was such new territory for them.' He had no idea that she could be this brazen. He choked out, "Hell no! That would just be too much."

She laughed. "How about Jonathan?" She drew out the name in a breathy sexy way.

"Ah, no, only my mother and grandmother called me that. That puts all kinds of wrong pictures in my head."

She had a disturbed expression, "Okay, what did other family members call you?"

"John…well, up until middle school anyways."

"So, you then went by your middle name, Jack?

"Jack isn't my middle name." he replied automatically. 'Damn! Why did I have to say that?'

"I always assumed the J stood for Jack, so what does the J stand for?"

He thought long and hard whether or not he wanted to disclose that information. "That's classified."

"Seriously?"

After a moment Jack relented with, "Fine." In a very hushed tone he muttered, "Its Jacob."

"What? You shared a name with my Dad and never said anything?"

Without making any eye contact, Jack remained quiet until the silence was deafening.

When she couldn't stand it any longer, Sam gave up and said, "So…Jonathan Jacob?"

"Well you know Irish Catholics…"

"Irish Catholic?"

"The whole O with an apostrophe then Neill, with two L's didn't clue you in?"

"I guess I never thought of it to be honest. Are you a practicing Catholic because you never…"

"No, it didn't really fit."

"So big family, then? You never mentioned siblings."

"I'm an only." Sam gave him a funny look. "Let's just say the trying part wasn't the problem." After a pregnant pause and a disturbed far off look, "Walls….so thin."

Sam had a shocked "oh" look and then went into a fit of giggles that morphed into a hard belly laugh. She even had tears falling down her cheeks.

After her laughter died down, "I'm glad this all amuses you. It was very traumatic." Giving her a mock stink eye and continuing, "I do have lots and lots and lots of cousins though."

She went into another bout of laughter, and after a minute was able to calm herself and asked, "Are any of you close."

"Have I ever mentioned them?"

"No."

"Well there you go."

"So where does Jack come from then?"

"That is even more classified."

"Really? You're doing that again?"

With a glint in his eye and a half grin, "I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you. That would be bad because… I'm sorta attached." Giving her his impish grin and raising to give her a quick peck. He returned to his previous position.

"Jack, please. You know I can do classified," Sam pleaded with a smile in her eyes.

He never could say no when she pleaded with him. Her eyes looked sincere too. He resigned.

"This story is for your ears only."

She smiled, "Of course."

"You know how guys like to razz each other?"

"Of course," she replied, "I have been in the military for a while, and I have listened to you and Daniel for years."

"Well, I was a bit mouthy and sarcastic…"

In mock surprise, "You mouthy and sarcastic…?"

"Hey, you want me to tell you this or not?"

"Sorry."

"When I would get like that, my friends would call me Jack Ass." He paused to see if she was going to say something, but she kept her lips sealed. He continued, "Because all the families were religious and we weren't allowed to curse in school, my friends would just call me Jack as a joke. I came to like it and it stuck. There you go, that's the story."

He could tell she was holding in a laugh. "Why Jack versus John?"

"I just liked it and it seems to fit my personality better. More macho I guess. I never really liked John…Jacob…Jingleheimer…or Schmidt." Then watching Sam seeing if she knew where he was going with this. Her sudden laughter was his answer.

When she again was able to catch her breath, Sam stated, "I don't think I have laughed this hard in a long time."

Jack was pleased, he loved her giggles and loved to make her laugh. He enjoyed it too much and that is why he told her no giggling. He wouldn't be able to hide the love he felt for her. Jack continued to enjoy watching her amusement of his story. She started calming down and he started to see the look she gets when she is in deep thought. 'Oh, crap!'

Sam then looked at him and he could tell that she was about to say something brilliant.

"Your call sign is Donkey, isn't it?"

He tried to mask his surprise. How the hell did she figure that out? He hated his call sign. Jack missed flying, but he was glad to get away from that name when he moved on to special operations. Only flyers go by call signs, so it didn't follow him unless he ran into an old flying buddy.

"I'm right?" She broke out into another belly laugh, once again crying.

This is embarrassing. As he gazed at her laughing form the wheels in his head began to spin and he gently whispered, "Barbie."

As if a switch had been flipped, she glared at him with daggers.

"How?"

With a smug smile, he replied, "I have been your CO for nine years. You don't think I couldn't get this kind of dirt on you?"

Jack could hear her head humming as she was thinking of a response. To ease the building tension, he smiled and said, "I will never tell if you don't."

Sam replied, "Mutually assured destruction." She smiled and sealed it with a deep kiss.

"I think it's time for us to make an appearance. Who knows what they are thinking right now."

She paled slightly.

"Why don't you go take a shower and I will deal with them."

She gave him a slow burn loving kiss that took his breath away. She stared into his eyes, a little breathy herself, "Always the protector." Then she moved off the bed gathering her stuff from her bag in the corner.

Jack watched her leave the room. Getting up himself, he went into the kitchen, grabbed a cup of coffee and joined the guys who happened to be sitting on the deck. He could see the questions in their eyes as he approached. 'Screw it, let them think what they want.' He just smiled at them smugly and said, "Good morning."

Teal'c gave a Jack a raised eye brow. Jack just gave a single shake of his head as he took a sip of coffee.

The fun thing about fanfiction is writing stories of the unknown. Its funny how we know Sam's nephew, niece and mother's name, but we don't know what the J stands for in Jack's name. It could be Jack, but we don't know that. My decision for Jacob as his middle name was purely for the joke that Jack makes in the story.

Call signs are rarely cool names as you see in movies. Well in the AF that is. Generally the person goes through some sort of hazing and the person is named for a incredibly stupid deed or a adolescent play off of their actual name or its a theme in common culture. For example, The Simpsons were common during its peak.

I had a good time writing this one. I hope you all enjoyed it.
