Note: Post Season 3

Matt made his way along the hospital corridors, listening carefully. The lady downstairs had told him what floor to go to, now he just had to find the right room.

He was starting to think maybe he should have accepted Foggy's offer to accompany him even though he wanted to do this on his own. Finally, he found what he was looking for. A heartbeat. One he knew very well.

Matt walked down the hallway until he was stood outside the room the heartbeat was coming from. Taking a deep breath, he knocked.

"Come in!" called a familiar voice and Matt slowly opened the door.

"Matthew," Father Lantom smiled upon seeing the young man, "I'm very glad to see you."

"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner," Matt said, "I was dealing with some things."

"Wilson Fisk is back behind bars," Father Lantom said, "And you are up and walking around in the daylight and wearing something other than church donations. I'd say you dealt with things very well."

Matt bowed his head slightly.

"Sit down Matthew," Father Lantom said, "Five feet in front, two feet to your left."

Matt found the chair Father Lantom had directed him to and sat down.

"What's on your mind Matthew?" the older man asked.

"I'm not here for a confession Father," Matt said.

"You're here for something," the priest pointed out and it almost unnerved Matt how well the older man could read him.

"I-" he put his head in his hands and took a deep breath.

"Matthew," Father Lantom leaned over and placed his hand on Matt's back.

"I'm sorry Father," Matt said, tears leaking from his eyes, "What I said…"

"Was said from a place of anger," Father Lantom said, "But also not incorrect."

"I never should have said it," Matt shook his head, "Everything you've done for me and I couldn't look past one little mistake…"

"You were going through a lot," Father Lantom said, "And finding out about Maggie would have come as a great shock at any time. I do not blame you, Matthew."

"You almost died," Matt said, "And that… the last thing I would have said… I just want you to know, I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said."

"I know Matthew and I forgive you," Father Lantom said gently, "I do hope you can understand that… it wasn't my secret to share."

"I know," Matt nodded, "I do understand that. And Maggie told me you were always trying to get her to tell me the truth. I appreciate everything you did for as a kid and everything you've done these past few years… It means a lot, Father."

"I'm proud of you, Matthew," Father Lantom told him. "And I don't mean… other you. I mean, you. I am proud to know Matthew Murdock, lawyer in Hell's Kitchen. You're a good man."

Matt swallowed hard past the lump in his throat.

"Thank you, Father," he said softly, clearing his throat, "U, uh, I should let you rest. Is it… is it okay if I visit again?"

"I would like that very much," Father Lantom smiled, "They said I will be here for some time still. Apparently getting stabbed through the chest with a large object gets you a long term bed."

"I'll come back soon," Matt promised, "Bye Father."

"Goodbye Matthew," Father Lantom said as Matt walked out the door.

Matt retraced his steps back down the hall, feeling much lighter than he had when he first arrived.

I was so sad when Father Lantom died and decided to do a little reimagining if he hadn't.
