Chapter 3: We will be Fine

Sam was startled awake. She wasn't sure why, but something was off. The first thing she noticed was that her face felt really gritty. She must have fallen asleep on Jack after her break down. Then Sam looked over at the clock, it was just after 0400. Jack didn't wake her up for her meds, but oddly she wasn't in any discomfort. That was strange because her body made sure she knew it was time of pain meds. She tried to look towards Jack, but he was up in her neck. As a matter of fact, he was flush up against her side. She felt the constant pressure of his hand lying on her lower abdomen. Sam hoped he was okay. After her cry, that had to make him feel bad. He hated it when she cried.

Sam decided to get up and go to the bathroom. The moment of truth and she wasn't looking forward to the pain of getting up. She moved the covers and slowly sat up. There was no pain and she felt slightly stronger. Sam stood up with no issues, no pulling or strain, and went into the bathroom. When she got in there, she lifted her shirt and the incisions were gone! 'What the hell?' She looked in the mirror and she was still pale, but she had some color. At that moment, she remembered where Jack's hand had been lying. 'There's no way, could he without the download?'

Sam walked out of the bathroom leaving the light on. She looked over at Jack. He hadn't moved at all and his face was slightly pale. She walked over and sat on the edge of his side of the bed.

"Jack, wake up." He didn't budge. Sam was starting to worry. She put her hand on his shoulder and shook it. A little louder than before, "Jack, wake up!"

Jack started stirring and rolled over onto his back and slightly opened his eyes. Groggily he croaked out, "What's going on?"

Sam voice was a higher pitch from concern, "Jack are you okay?"

The look of worry on her face concerned him, confused, "Yeah, why?"

"You're looking pale and you didn't wake me up for my meds. You didn't even stir when I got out of bed."

He was awake now, trying to get up quickly, but his body was not cooperating, "Oh, shit! I'm sorry, Sam. Are you alright?"

"That's the thing, Jack, I'm fine."

"What do mean?"

Rubbing her forehead with her hand and getting to the point, "Jack, I think you healed me."

That made Jack prop himself on his elbows. Shaking his head and with a voice of exasperation, "That's not possible."

"Normally, I would agree with you, but I'm in no pain, I feel stronger and my incisions are gone."

Jack laid back down. His mind was saying 'No way,' but his body was saying another. He was exhausted and weak.

Sam continued, "What were you thinking about when you went to sleep? Your hand was lying on my abdomen when I woke up."

Jack laid his arm across his eyes.

Sam lightly touched his arm, concerned, "Jack?"

He hesitated before he replied, "I wanted to take your pain away. Just the other kind." He huffed after.

"Well, it helped."

Resigned, "Yeah, there's no way I fixed everything."

With sadness in her voice, "No, not everything."

He let out a sigh, "Sam can we talk about this later. I'm exhausted. I can't keep my eyes open."

"Yeah, of course." Sam got up and to walk around the bed. She knew Jack was upset, but she wasn't going to press.

Jack rolled over towards the door. Sam got in and cuddled up to his back and put an arm around him. "This okay?"

Jack grabbed her hand, entwined their fingers, and pulled it towards his chest. He wasn't, but he replied "Yeah" anyways. Jack fell asleep quickly, but it was light and restless.

Sam lay there for awhile thinking about what happened, eventually falling to sleep.

Sam woke up to the sound of water running. The door to the bathroom was open. Jack often did this to help with steam, so he could shave in the mirror. It was still early, Jack mustn't have slept well after their little revelation. She got up, walked over to the bathroom and leaned against the door jam. Jack had a towel wrapped around his waist and he still glistened with water from showering. 'Did the man ever dry off?' She wondered. She could tell that he had just started shaving with the amount of shaving cream he had on his face with a few swipes missing.

Jack sensed Sam's presence and looked over. She was leaning against the door frame. He asked, "How are you feeling this morning?"

"I'm feeling much better thanks to you. Still feeling weak from the blood loss though. I guess you can't replenish that with your little power."

Jack rolled his eyes. Changing the subject. "Oh, um, do you need to use the bathroom? I can get out and wait."

Sam shook her head, "I could use the other bathroom if I really need to go."

He turned back to the mirror and started shaving again.

Shifting a little, "I guess we need to talk about what happened last night."

He glanced at her through the mirror, "You mean what I did because I'm a freak of nature."

Exasperated, "Jack, you're not a freak of nature."

Waving his razor around with his reply, shaving cream unintentionally flying toward the mirror and Sam, as Jack stated to the room, "Really, I healed my wife with some crazy ancient whatever. On top of that, the stupid naquadah that runs through my veins. Thanks to the symbiotes my body possessed over the years. I have all kinds of scars. Uh…Freak!"

"So I'm a freak because I carry naquadah in my veins too?"

He had to smile saying, "You're my freak," as he gently wiped the small dollop of shaving cream from her chin with his thumb.

She shook her head. Sam knew that Jack had naquadah in his system. She has felt it for the last couple of years, but never brought it up because she knew he hated it. It brought up bad memories she's sure he didn't want to recall. Jack just brought it up, so she took the opening. "How much do you feel?"

He finished the last swipe of his shave, cleaned his razor and used a towel to wipe away the remnants of the cream before he turned toward her. "Just a little at this distance. Then when we hug, I feel a hum throughout my body."

Sam was looking at him incredulously, "You call that freaky? It feels pleasant to me, and add that with the usual tingling you feel with a lover. It just magnifies the experience. I can only feel that with you. It doesn't always have to be bad."

"I guess so." He just stared at her for a few moments trying to come up the right words. She's right, it does feel pleasant unlike when he is near a Goa'uld or Tokra. It's just a reminder of both experiences he's had. "Actually with you it is." He gave a small shrug. "I'm just not sure how we can explain this without causing some unwanted attention. Especially at my level and our secret marriage."

Sam nodded and watched Jack get dressed.

Jack turned to her after he finished as if he had he been thinking about it, "I mean, how do you tell someone that your husband healed you and that be just a normal doctor patient conversation." Hanging up his towel.

Sam smiled at that, "Well I do work at Area 51. Weird stuff is what we do there. I'm sure the doctors there wouldn't be too freaked out. They already know about my body chemistry."

Jack took a real deep breath and let out a sigh, "And me? They don't even know about this." Waving his hand between them.

"You know me, I will think of something." Giving him her menacing smile.

Jack walked up to her and kissed her forehead before walking into the bedroom. He turned around, "Do you want me to make breakfast?

She shook her head. "No, now that I'm better, I think I'm going to take a long soaking hot bath. Maybe after?"

Jack nodded and walked out of the room.

Sam could smell the food when she opened the bathroom door. She walked out to the kitchen and found Jack cooking up his egg sausage mix for breakfast burritos. Sam loved it when he made them. It gave her breakfast or dinner for a few days. She walked up next to him. "Where did you get all this?"

"I went to the store and bought groceries." While heating up the tortillas.

"Was I in the bath that long?"

Jack chuckled, "How many times did you heat up the water?"

She gave him a guilty look.

Looking at her while scooping the mix on the warm tortillas, "Do you at least feel better?"

"After being in such a sterile place, I always feel so grimy when I go home."

Picking up the plates and carrying them to table, "I know what you mean."

Jack went back and poured two cups of coffee and returned to the table. He handed her a cup and they both sat down. Jack took a bite, "I also made travel plans."

Sam trying to talk around a bite, "Oh."

"Yeah I made sure that my flight overlaps with Laura's, so I can pass off your keys."

"Laura doesn't really need to come, I'm fine now."

"Well, I'm not sure we can explain that, so it's best to play the part."

"I'm not that good of an actor like you. I can't even lie with a straight face."

Jack smiled while wiping his face. "You'll figure it out. Someone should be here anyways. You're on quarters so you're not allowed to leave the house."

Sam gave Jack a resigned nod and a sigh. This is going to drive her crazy bring stuck in the house for two weeks.

In the afternoon, Sam found Jack sitting up in the bed hunched over to the side sleeping. His laptop was lying open in his lap and his readers were askew on his nose. She walked over and took a look at his computer screen. He had just sent a reply to a scathing email about the SGC's budget. She found his reply and smiled. It wasn't a typical Jack O'Neill response that she would have heard in their glory days. It was very direct and made very excellent points. She shook her head. He definitely had tried to pull wool over everyone's eyes at the SGC while he was still just a Colonel. Sam shut down, closed his laptop and set it on his nightstand. Then she reached out and carefully removed his glasses off his face. Jack immediately scooted down and rolled to his side facing her without waking up. She chuckled.

Over the last several months when they visited each other, she noticed how exhausted he was and by time the weekend was over, he seemed refreshed and rejuvenated. Of course three hour jet lag didn't help either. A couple visits ago, he seemed almost needy. It was concerning. He never seemed to need anything in the years they worked together. Their love making was loving, but on the needy side. After the third time, in his haze, she finally confronted him. It was the easiest time to talk to him. She figured that out pretty quickly. Hopefully, he would never catch on. He admitted that with all the crap he had to deal with that she grounded him when they visited each other. He also admitted that he did that at the SGC as well. He just didn't realize it at the time, but his visits to her lab, Daniel's office or working out with Teal'c helped him get through the aftermath of some of their hardest missions. He had that everyday when he needed it. Now he was by himself in DC and he didn't have those connections. Just phone calls and that wasn't the same. After his revelation, she realized that she felt that too, but her job was fun and wasn't quite as stressful. She wondered if Daniel and Teal'c felt the same way after their separation. They all depended on each other. As she recalled that weekend, she then realized that was probably the weekend they conceived. As if to get rid of the ache, she shook her head before Sam bent down over Jack and kissed his temple. She left him to nap.

Later on at night, Sam found Jack sitting on the edge of the bed taking off his pants. She approached him and sat next to him. He just continued pulling his pants off his lower legs.

"You've been quiet since lunch. You okay?"

He had finished his undressing and sat forward with his hands in his lap looking towards the bedroom door. She watched to see if he was going to respond.

He took a big breath in and said, "I'm failing at this whole husband thing again." He kept staring out away from her.

Sam pinched her eyebrows in confusion. He was quiet but not distant. He did things to care for her. Then she realized that he was quiet after their discussion about his travel back to DC. He wanted to be there for her like he had all those other times in their past. He was her rock when her father died. Jack definitely would want to be here after the loss of their child. She closed her eyes at the ache it caused. "We knew this going in."

He shook his head, "This is different than us just separating after a weekend. I should be here for you, but I can't get the time off with the idiots wanting to cut the budget to the SGC and this whole Daniel missing his chance at Atlantis because of his new girlfriend. Now I have to see if I can get him on the next flight out and what to do with him in meantime. It's gonna be at least a couple more months. I can't shake this gut feeling that things are about to get very ugly again." Jack finally looked at her.

She shook her head, "Jack you're not failing, you're here now and you will be here on Friday."

"I…I can't be here for you if you…need me." She knew what he meant, if and when she broke down again.

"How are you doing with this? I'm worried too."

"I'm fine."

She scoffed, "Why I don't believe that?"

"I didn't even know, I didn't even had time to get used to the idea. It was just…gone. I'm more worried about you." There was no malice in his words. It was just a statement.

Sam closed her eyes, "My first OB appointment was scheduled for this Wednesday. I was going to have my first ultrasound then. I had this big plan to surprise you next weekend…"

"That would have been nice." He gave her his shy grin, but there was sadness in his eyes.

"I need to make a note that I need to cancel my appointment on Monday."

They sat side by side in silence for awhile.

Jack took a deep breath in and released a sigh on the exhale. "You planning on continuing after all of this. If you don't, I guess I can do something to make this…permanent."

Sam knows he's protecting her. If she is not wanting to try again, he will do what it takes, but she can hear the resignation in his voice. This rattled him. Even though he didn't know, he must have been thinking about the idea of them having a child together. The emotions getting to her, she spoke with a thickness to her voice. "My heart aches so much. Surprisingly so. I didn't even know it and it had already captured my heart."

Jack interrupted, his voice quiet and soft, "It was something we created. The two of us. Even if it only lived a short while."

She nodded. He would know. She continued, "I'm grieving, I'm not going to make that big of a decision yet. I owe you that much. Yes, the idea of us having something together is very appealing. But, I never considered it before, especially in our line of work."

"With our conversation over the ring and Pete. It seemed to me that children were something you never wanted. It seemed like…a burden. Then that discussion at the cabin…"

"You're right, and that should have been a big clue. With Pete, it wasn't something I truly wanted. But with you, I find myself actually wanting it."

"Why?"

"On our wedding night, do you remember what I told you about what my Dad said?"

Nodding, "You could still have everything you wanted?"

"Yeah, it took me awhile to believe that, but I believe it wholeheartedly now."

"You wouldn't have to drop the kid off. I would be a stay at home Dad." Jack glanced up at her and smiled.

Sam smiled back. She knew it in her heart that Jack would step up to the plate. He would retire and she could continue on with her career knowing that their kids would be cared for no matter what. She trusted Jack way more than she did Pete. She had a nagging feeling that Pete would have made her feel guilty if she still went head first into her career. Jack, Jack would support her and even give her a push when need be. That's what her father meant, Jack was the perfect spouse for her. He had proven it to her over the nine years they have known each other. In some way her heart swelled that she finally got this right. But could that dream she had become a reality? Right now, it didn't seem so. That deep ache she felt last night that shattered her was hitting her yet again.

Jack moved next to her and looked at her with concern in his eyes. He must have seen the array of emotions as she was thinking. "What's going on in that head of yours?"

Sam tried to get control of her emotions, so she could reply to his answer. It took her a moment, and she was finally able to speak. The tears came anyways though. "Last night, when you woke me up. I was having a very vivid dream. It felt real and when you woke me up, reality came crashing." She took a deep breath in trying to steel her resolve.

He nodded, "I can relate."

She wanted to tell him the dream. It was important in giving him hope. That she wouldn't can the opportunity just yet. "In my dream, we had the baby. She was so beautiful, Jack. I could see her face as if she was a real person. Her features and the way she suckled in her sleep. She had my shaped eyes and your lips. Some of her facial expressions as she slept reminded me of you. You were sitting on the side of the bed facing me holding her. You looked at her with such joy. It was an expression I had never seen before. That I want to see." She wiped the tears on her face away and studied Jack's face. He was looking slightly away, but she could tell his lips were firmly together. He was hiding his feelings. She allowed him some space to process what she just revealed and looked towards the room.

Jack shifted a bit and quietly almost in a whisper, "Maybe it's just not in the cards for me. Karma and all that."

She didn't look at him, she just closed her eyes. "Please don't say that." Trying to come back with something that will get him off this train of thought. Then she thought back to what he said in the infirmary. "What was it you said when I apologized?"

Jack was silent at first, but eventually answered as if it was hard for him to get out, "This is not your fault."

"It not yours either. Just do me a favor?" He looked at her listening, and she continued, "If you go down that rabbit hole when you're in DC that you will call me." She paused then added, "It doesn't have to be me, call Daniel or General Hammond, somebody." She looked into his eyes expectantly.

Jack was working his jaw but he slightly nodded. Then turned his head looking forward again.

They both sat there staring at nothing in particular in the room for a good several minutes before Jack sighed and quietly said still staring straight, "I guess we answered one unknown." He shrugged.

Sam looked at him in then and asked, "What's that?"

He looked at her then and grabbed her hand rubbing his thumb on the back of it, "You can get pregnant."

She nodded, "Yeah."

They both looked back into the room holding hands. Sam looked back at him seeing a particular look on his face that she had seen before. One that meant he was about to say something simple, but surprisingly profound. It didn't happen often, but when it did, you wanted to hear what he had to say. She decided to look away and wait patiently.

It took a few minutes, but he quietly started talking, "You know, there isn't always an explanation for things. We don't always know why things like this happens, but in this particular instance, as far as we know, the baby was healthy and beautiful. It just got stuck or stranded because it couldn't make it through the wormhole." He shrugged. "I guess it took after its Dad." He looked up at her with his shy sad smile and looked back away.

Sam with unexpected grief turned and scooted as close as she could to Jack, wrapped her arms around his shoulders and cried into his neck.

Jack thought maybe he said something he shouldn't have so he asked, "Did I say something wrong? I didn't mean to make you cry."

Sam pulled back and wiped her face, while shaking her head. She leaned in and kissed him. Then she hugged him again. With her voice thick, "No, it was perfect. For someone who can act clueless sometimes, you seem to say the right things when they need to be said."

Jack scoffed, "Yeah, sure."

Sam looked at him with a watery smile. Then she took Jack's shirt off and started on her pajamas. By time she was done, both were naked with the exception of their underwear. Then she pulled down their covers and scooted to the center of the bed. "Come on Jack, let's go to bed."

When Jack finally found his voice from shock, "Umm, Sam, I'm not sure if this is a good idea right now."

"We're not doing anything, Jack. I just want to feel your skin on mine."

Jack got up to turn the light off and climbed into bed and she covered them. Sam scooted over and cuddled into him with her head on his shoulder. At that moment, Jack realized what she was doing when he released a long sigh of tension that he was holding.

Sam lifted her head and stated, "Exactly." Then she laid her head back onto his shoulder.

He slightly chuckled and kissed her head, "You always do have the best ideas."

They laid in the dark relaxing together when spoke, "Jack, I think we're going to be alright."

It was a statement, but also a question, so he answered, "Yeah, we will be." There was a pause before he continued, "I love you, you know."

"Yeah, me too." She moved her head so she could kiss his neck.

Jack smiled and felt better. It didn't bother him as much that he had to leave the next day. It didn't take long for either of them to fall asleep together.

We all know that their decision was made for them when Sam goes back to the SGC, but I would like to hope they get another chance between Atlantis and the Hammond. She was wearing a large BDU jacket in the series finale of Atlantis. So maybe?

Thank you for reading!
