Sirius' motorbike roared to a stop in front of the house. Sirius got off and tossed the bike into the street, for once not worrying about keeping it looking meticulous. The Muggles who were undoubtedly peeking out of their blinds to see what all the noise was were also of no concern to him.
Let them talk. It didn't matter. If he was successful, James and Lily would never be returning here anyway.
He rushed up the front walk and burst through the front door. It wasn't even locked. His friends had gotten complacent thanks to the Fidelus Charm, the same charm that Sirius had assured them would work.
James appeared in the hallway before Sirius had gotten three steps into the house. His eyes were wide.
"Sirius? What's going on?"
"We have to get out of here," Sirius said without explaining. "I don't care if you take nothing but the clothes on your backs. You just can't stay."
Lily hurried down the steps with Harry held tightly in her arms. "Sirius?" she asked, just as confused as James. "What are you talking about?"
Sirius rubbed a hand roughly over his face. He needed to get them out immediately, but it was clear they weren't going anywhere unless he took a second to explain. They felt safer here than anywhere else after all, even if that safety was an illusion.
"Peter told You-Know-Who where you are," he said in a rush, ignoring the pain in his chest as he thought of his friend's betrayal. "You-Know-Who knows where you are, and he's coming. Tonight."
James and Lily stared at him in horror. Harry squirmed in Lily's arms, sending he into action again. She began pacing up and down the hallway, bouncing him in her arms and cooing.
"That can't be," James said, still staring at Sirius, his face pale.
"It can," Sirius said, swallowing the bile rising up his throat. "Wormtail confessed everything to me not even half an hour ago. I left him in a sobbing heap on the floor of my flat. He's lucky I didn't kill him."
The venom in Sirius' voice was enough for James to believe him, even if it was still hard to wrap his head around how one of his best friends could sink so low. He looked around the hallway helplessly until he made eye contact with Lily, who gave a short nod.
"We'll go," she said. "I don't know where, but we can't stay here."
James nodded, still looking around as he considered the options. "Take Harry to Dumbledore now," he said. "Sirius and I will stay behind to collect the most important things, and then we'll join you."
He glanced at Sirius, who was quick to nod. Lily looked like she'd argue for a split second, but she knew that someone had to get the baby to safety as soon as possible. She pulled James in for a quick kiss.
"I love you," she said, not giving him time to respond before she'd hurried into the living room to use the Floo.
James and Sirius looked at each other again and shared a quick nod.
They would be gone before Voldemort arrived in Godric's Hollow.
