Trek Through Magical Stars
Ch 4: You Built A Time Machine . . . Out Of A Starship?
The first thing that Dumbledore noticed as he awoke was the slight headache that he had. But before he could think about why that would be the case a voice said, "You might have a slight headache for a minute or two. Side effect of the counteragent to the sedative".
Startled Dumbledore quickly looked up and glanced upon possibly the strangest assembly of people he had ever seen before. Of the people in the room the most outstanding was the woman with green skin and the one who looked like a cat. After those two glaring examples there were a few strange things about the rest of the people in the room. One man had strange ridges on his nose, and another had pointed ears that looked like some muggle descriptions of elves. And centered in the strange assembly was Harry Potter who was back in the same clothing that he had originally appeared in.
Dumbledore was broken out of his slight shock when the woman with the green skin spoke up again, "If you need a minute for the headache to die down, let us know. We don't want to have to repeat ourselves".
"Thank you, but it is already fading", says Dumbledore.
"Ok let's get started then", declares Potter in an authoritative voice as he claps his hands together. "Although before we begin, I must warn you that any telepathy attacks against my crew will result in harsh action being taken against your person".
With a slight Gulp Dumbledore remembers the disaster that his last Legilimency probe was and quickly agrees, "Yes that was a mistake on my part, I hope that it will not contribute to any bad blood between us?".
Potter stares him down with a harsh look, "Yes it was, although I am tempted to call us even as I got a very good look through your memories. I also apologize for that, but you started it and I needed information quickly. I promise you that it will not happen again".
Dumbledore was satisfied with that outcome. Even if he did feel a slight amount of anger at Harry, he hoped that the brief look into his head would enable the 'boy' to trust him more. "And I thank you for that".
"Alright, lets get some introductions started here. I'll go first, my name is Captain Potter", begins Potter. He then gestures to the feline figure standing next to him.
The feline then speaks up, "I am Commander M'Rala the Captain's first officer".
The large muscular man starts next, "I am Lieutenant Shaxs in charge of tactical and security".
"My name is Doctor Neevou head of medical", states the green woman.
"Kimi Taakir and I am the ship's counselor", states the ordinary looking woman in a bubbly voice.
"And I am Lieutenant Shrom. I am the chief science officer on board", says the man with elf ears in a monotone voice.
"Very nice to meet you all. Although I have to ask what exactly some of you are, as you are certainly not human or any other species I have heard of", asks Dumbledore.
That comment got a few strange looks from the command crew before Potter responds, "Huh, I would have guessed that you only knew about humans. But non-the-less you are correct, I am the only 'Human' here and even I don't really fit that definition entirely anymore". Potter then gestures again to M'Rala.
"My species is known as Caitians, we are a felinoid species", explains M'Rala.
"Bajoran. And we are very similar to humans, although we do have better noses", states Shaxs which got a few chuckles from the crew along with Dumbledore.
"My species are called Vulcans", says Shrom.
"I'm an Orion notable for our green skin color", explains Dr. Neevou.
"And I am a Betazoid, we look very similar to humans, but we don't have an iris like you. Were also an entire race of telepaths so I'll be making sure that you don't try anything", smiles Kimi.
"Alright now that introductions are finished, I would guess that you have some rather pressing questions Mr. Dumbledore?", asks Potter.
"I have quite a few Harry. But the most important one is what happened to you? Where have you been for the past 7 years, although by looking at you I would have to assume it's been more", questions Dumbledore.
"I would ask that you call me Captain Potter Mr. Dumbledore, I don't know you well enough for you to call me by my first name, and it's a bit improper in front of the crew", says Potter, "And for where I have been for the past few years is a difficult question to answer. But the truth is that I have been in the future. When I went missing 7 years ago to you, I was transported to the year 2345. And while it has only been 7 years for you it has been 35 years for me".
Dumbledore didn't really have a response for that other than, "Oh". Taking a few seconds, he then came up with something to say, "I might need a few minutes to wrap my head around that Captain Potter, it certainly does present a few problems. Although another question I have is where are we?".
Potter chuckled, "And that question will unfortunately not be any easier to answer, but the short answer is that we are currently on my ship. And I think a better way to explain this would be with a visual aid, and that would best be accomplished in another room. So, if you're up to it we can take a short field trip".
Albus nodded standing up from the rather uncomfortable metal chair. He didn't have much to say still trying to understand how he got from Hogwarts to a ship when he gestured for the Captain to start walking.
Potter turned on his heel and commanded, "Computer door". Immediately after a large metal orange colored door appeared in front of Potter much to Dumbledore's shock. Although he put it out of his mind as at the minute as he had more important things, such as Harry's temporal displacement, to worry about.
Dumbledore followed behind Potter, trailed by the rest of the command crew and the security team. As they walked in silence Dumbledore noted the strangeness of the hallway that he was walking down. It was nothing like the stone corridors of Hogwarts, instead being a mix of metal and carpeting. Overall, it had a very industrial feel.
Potter stopped in front of a red doorway that automatically opened when he walked up to it. "Alright, Mr. Dumbledore, Kimi, Shrom, and I will go. The security team can follow us. Everyone else is as of now off duty, have a good night, everyone". Potter then gestures for Dumbledore to enter the turbolift.
After everyone entered, the doors closed as Potter ordered the computer to take them to the lounge. Dumbledore was felt slightly strange, almost as if he was moving but not at the same time. Suddenly the sensation stopped, and the doors whooshed open again and Potter stepped out first. Following again Potter stopped shortly outside of a large pair of doors.
"Alright, the view from this room will help visualize what I am telling you, so let's get this over with", states Potter as he walks inside.
Dumbledore follows and the first thing his eyes are drawn to possibly the most incredible view he had ever seen before outside the windows. Hanging in the inky darkness was Earth in all its glory, a beautiful mix of blues, greens, and white clouds. Dumbledore's jaw dropped, while he said nothing as there was nothing he could say.
"You see Mr. Dumbledore, we are on a ship currently, but not one as you know it. We are currently on the Starfleet starship U.S.S. Valkyrie in orbit thousands of kilometers above Earth", states Potter softly.
"But, how?", is all Dumbledore can manage to say.
Potter chuckles at that and says, "It seems that when I was transported back into the past my ship and crew came along with me for the ride. They were deposited in orbit above the planet when I appeared on the surface".
Dumbledore just looks at Potter and says, "But how? The muggles just landed on the moon a few years ago."
"As I said before Mr. Dumbledore I am from the future. We came back from the Earth year 2380 to be exact. A few hundred years is a long time, and humanity advanced a lot in that time. We discovered that the cosmos wasn't nearly as empty as we theorized when we made first contact with the Vulcans. They helped us get a footing and we eventually began to explore the galaxy, finding many more species in the process. Eventually Humans along with four other species founded the United Federation of Planets, a democratic galactic government. It started small but has grown quickly and now consists of over 150 member species and thousands of inhabited planets. Suffice it to say technology matures very quickly when you have billions of brilliant minds collaborating with each other. Things that would seem like fantasy in 1994 are quite normal, such as space travel, in 2380".
Dumbledore taking this all in took a seat in one of the chairs facing the windows. This was all beyond what he could have imagined. He had never even entertained the thought that Harry had been pulled to the future, and most certainly not a future that made those muggle movies real. Could this possibly be the power Voldemort knows not?
With a sigh Dumbledore says, "I must say I never imagined that this is what happened to you. I was always expecting to find you and be able to show you the wonder of magic that you could learn in the halls of Hogwarts". Looking back at the Captain Dumbledore asks with a forlorn expression, "Have you had a good life?"
Potter's first thought to this question was to reply in a snarky manner about why he would even care, but after catching a look at his face that thought instantly died out. After seeing the old man's expression, he just couldn't bring himself to hate the man as much as he had an hour ago. Now just feeling somewhat sad for the defeated man. So, instead Potter walked over and took a seat next to the elderly man, "I have, every day I get to do my dream job. I'm the Captain of a federation starship, what I have wanted to be since I was seven years old. I get to explore new worlds, make scientific discoveries, help people in need, and even defend what I love. And while there have been tough times where my life was filled with pain and strife, I wouldn't trade it for the world".
"Well, I am glad that you have found something fulfilling at least", says Dumbledore staring at Earth. "I can certainly see the appeal of your life if you get to see views like this". Turning to Potter with regret in his eyes he says, "I am sorry that I failed you as a child. I didn't know that your relatives would treat you as poorly as they did, and in my hubris, I never checked in on you".
Potter takes a moment before responding, "While I appreciate the sentiment, I can't just forget what happened, but I can move past it. I know about the tournament from your memories and the contract that I somehow find myself bound to".
"Good, at least I won't have to explain that then", responds Dumbledore. "Although I am still not sure how it happened, or how you got here".
Shrom intercedes here, "I believe that it has to do with an unknown energy field that the ship was engulfed in before we arrived here. The energy was attempting to penetrate our hull, for an unknown reason. Although I now postulate that it was trying to get to the Captain. Simplifying things, we attempted to pull the energy off the hull, and then ended up here".
Dumbledore strokes his beard before stating, "The Goblet, it must have somehow pulled you back here. Captain Potter only arrived shortly after his name was called after all. Although I have no idea why your entire ship was taken, possibly trying to fight the magic caused it to activate early. Almost as if it was a portkey or something similar. But I have no idea what mechanism the Goblet used to accomplish this feat, so I have no idea where to start on working out a way to reverse its effect. I told the Ministry that we shouldn't have used such an ancient and still mystifying magical artifact".
"Fascinating, but do not concern yourself with working out a way to return us to our time as we already know a proven method that will be acceptable for our needs", responds Shrom.
Dumbledore looked a little shocked that the muggles of the future knew how to time travel, but before he could ask about it Captain Potter got the conversation back on track.
"Getting back to the tournament, I will compete only because I am bound to. Although I would like Shrom to look over the contract beforehand just in case there is any loophole I can use to get out of competing", says Potter.
"That is acceptable, I can assist the lieutenant with that if he would like", responds Dumbledore. He then cringed a bit and said, "Although I fear the answer I must ask, will you be coming to Hogwarts to learn the craft of your parents and ensure a better chance at surviving the tournament?".
Potter stands up and begins to pace thinking deeply, "I really can't Mr. Dumbledore. Even stuck in the past as my crew finds itself, we have jobs that need to be done. Running a starship is a full-time job I can't just drop everything in order to go back to school".
"Are you sure? Maybe just private lessons done in your free time? The Tri-wizard tournament while for children is by no means safe and accomplished wizards and witches have perished before", argues Dumbledore.
Pondering the thought for a second Potter responds, "That could possibly work. And I must admit I am intrigued at the prospect of 'magic'". A puzzled expression passed over his face before he asks, "Although before I commit to anything would you give use a brief description of what you can do with 'magic'? I saw a little in your memories, but certainly not a lot".
Dumbledore quickly agrees and gives a brief description of the different types of magic and their utility. While he does Shrom produces a PADD from somewhere on his person and begins to type furiously. Kimi just listens thoughtfully. After Dumbledore finishes Potter scratches his chin and responds, "Interesting, although many of those things can be accomplished with our technology and sometimes even surpassed. But I suppose I would be willing to give it a try when I have time to spare. Although would you be willing to give us a demonstration as my scientific side still finds the entire idea of casting spells a bit outlandish".
"I would appreciate a demonstration as well", says Shrom as he pulls out a tricorder.
"Certainly", responds Dumbledore. "Although I would need my wand in order to do so".
Potter looks unsure for a second before he pulls the gnarled stick out of is pocket. "As I give this back, I am giving you, my trust. I have seen how these can be used as deadly weapons".
"And I thank you for that trust", responds Dumbledore taking his wand. He steps back a bit before aiming at a chair in front of him and saying with conviction, "Wingardium Leviosa".
The chair instead of lifting to the ceiling as Dumbledore expected, hovered a few centimeters above the ground before crashing back down as Dumbledore canceled the spell in shock.
"Well not to sound like an ass or anything, but that wasn't very impressive", says Potter after a few seconds.
"It was not", responds Dumbledore in a puzzled voice, "I used the normal amount of power I usually did, that should have levitated the chair to the ceiling. Strange, let me try again".
Dumbledore casts again, this time forcing more power into the spell. This time the chair did in fact levitate to the ceiling, but as Dumbledore canceled the spell he quickly sat down, exhausted. Shrom quickly asks, "Are you ok? You seem to have an elevated heart rate and are perspiring".
Dumbledore waves his hand conveying that he was ok before saying with a slight pant, "I am fine, just tired. That took much more out of me than it usually would".
"Perplexing", responds Shrom before he begins to inspect his tricorder reading.
"What Shrom said. Although now seeing 'magic' in action my curiosity is peaked. You claim that I should be able to learn how to do this?", asks Potter.
"Certainly Captain Potter, you are a wizard. Would you like to try a simple spell using my wand?", asks Dumbledore.
Potter responds with a hearty yes and Dumbledore hands him the wand. He the explains how to do the simple spell Lumos, just say the words with conviction and picture a light.
"Lumos", commands Potter as Shrom and Kimi eagerly watch. Unfortunately, nothing happened, and Potter repeats his command. The result is the same and in confusion he looks at Dumbledore, "Did I do something wrong?".
Dumbledore looked just as puzzled. "I don't believe so", he says worriedly, "Although . . .", Dumbledore trails off in thought.
Just before Dumbledore is about to explain his hypothesis Shrom speaks, "I believe that what Mr. Dumbledore is about to say is that the location is the issue. He believes that we should try on Earth".
Dumbledore just laughs at that, "That's exactly what I was going to ask. I concur with Lieutenant Shrom's assertion. I have never had trouble casting the levitation charm before leading me to believe that casting magic is more difficult up here than on the planet. And if it is more difficult that could be the reason why Captain Potter is having difficulty".
"Well, I suppose we should test this hypothesis like any good scientists. Shrom you and me will beam down with Dumbledore to Hogwarts. Kimi thanks for tagging along, but I think that I am safe from telepathic attacks at the moment, you can go to bed now if you would like", says Potter.
Kimi thanks the Captain and quickly makes her way out of the room as the rest follow behind her. As they exit Potter finds the security team waiting outside of the room in a conversation with M'Rala.
"I thought you would have gone to bed M'Rala", states Potter.
"Nope, I decided to keep the security team company and also listen in to ensure you didn't do anything stupid", responds M'Rala.
"Thanks Number One", he responds sarcastically, "I suppose you know I am heading down to the planet".
"I heard, be safe and don't stay down too long", she says as she begins to make her way towards the turbulent. Her tail flicks him in the face before walking away as she says, "I wouldn't want to have to go down with a security team and drag your ass back up here".
As M'Rala walks away Potter dismisses the security team. The trio of people then make their way through the ship to the nearest transporter room. Stepping inside the room, the technician on duty asks Potter for the location, which he provides.
Dumbledore follows Potter and Shrom onto the pad and asks, "Is this the way that we will be getting back?".
"Yup, same way that we got you up if you wanted to know", says Potter.
"And how exactly does this work? Is it safe?", asks Dumbledore with a bit of fear in his voice. He had never been the most trusting of muggle technology.
"It is perfectly safe", responds Shrom, "A low level explanation is that it is a matter transporter that works by dematerializing your body, converting it to energy, beaming it to the target location, and then converting that energy back into matter".
"What?", sputters Dumbledore suddenly very wary of the machine he was standing in.
"Energize", states Potter with a laugh before Dumbledore can argue.
The trio are engulfed in the transporter beam and quickly find themselves standing on the Hogwarts grounds, close to the forest. Dumbledore immediately pats down his body seemingly ensuring that he was all there.
"That was a very strange sensation", states Dumbledore still looking a bit shaken, "Nothing like apparition. Although not as unpleasant as it".
"Is this a suitable location to test our hypothesis?", asks Shrom getting the conversation on track.
"This should do", says Dumbledore as he brandishes his wand. He then proceeds to transfigure a patch of earth into a dog. The dog was well animated and begins to run around for a minute before Dumbledore cancels the transfiguration.
Both Potter and Shrom look impressed by his display of more complex magic, even as Shrom studies his tricorder readings.
"That was impressive, was it easier to cast?", asks Potter.
"Certainly, that felt as it should. This gives a bit more evidence for lieutenant and mine's theory", says Dumbledore. He then hands the wand over to Potter and tells him to try the Lumos spell.
"Lumos", Potter states again with conviction. Unfortunately, again there is no light cast. Beginning to get a bit worried Potter tries again and puts his entire will into casting the spell. Again, nothing happens. He turns to Dumbledore who is looking on with a very worried expression. "I don't know. I can feel something now, but it just isn't working. It feels like I am trying to fit a square into a circle shaped hole when I attempt to cast", admits Potter with a frown.
"Well, I have to say this was not what I was hoping for. Captain Potter did you ever have anything unexplainable happen around you? Something that you might now be able to attribute to magic. Possibly summoning something to you or another similar occurrence that happened when you willed it, or possibly were in danger", asks Dumbledore with a worried expression.
"I can remember a few things like that happening before I was pulled into the future, like that time my teachers hair changed color. But I can't say that I remember anything quite like what you are describing happening after being pulled into the future", says Potter with a puzzled expression. "Is that an important detail?"
"Accidental magic is the sign of a wizard Captain. It is the unrestrained application of a wizard's power that reacts when they are untrained or in situations of extreme peril. We begin to train wizards and witches at the age of 11 because after this age the issue of accidental magic becomes a larger and larger problem for them. The fact that you, a fully grown wizard has not been having somewhat frequent occurrences of accidental magic is a worrying prospect. Especially since the occurrences stopped after you were pulled from this time", claims Dumbledore.
"Although further testing would have to be done to prove my hypothesis, is it possible that the development of your magic is tied to the planet?", asks Shrom. He then turns to Dumbledore and explains, "you were almost unable to cast spells on the ship and we were not that far in terms of galactic scale from the planet. Captain Potter did not spend any time on Earth after he was pulled to the future until his very late teens. If your magic's development is tied to the planet this sudden re-location it could have possibly impaired its development".
Dumbledore went deep into thought for a minute, recalling all his knowledge about the development of magic in wizards and witches. He the says in an unsure tone, "I can see the merit behind that theory, although I know of no proof that backs it up. There has never been a wizard before Captain Potter that has grown up anywhere else than on Earth. But the fact that casting was much more difficult on your ship coupled with the fact that the Captain stopped having bouts of accidental magic after he left earth, it would make sense".
"Well that kind of sucks, I was just getting excited about it", says Potter before perking up, "Well it isn't that big of a deal. I don't really need it as technology can do basically all the important stuff. And the fact that it seems like magic doesn't really work away from earth would make it pointless for me in the long run, I'm not on the planet enough for it to be useful".
Dumbledore was glad that Potter was not too devastated about the loss of his magic, but he was disappointed that he would not be able to teach the boy. He was also a little saddened that Harry did not seem too broken up over the prospect that he wouldn't be able to learn the craft that his parents loved. He was also a little worried about the prophecy as he didn't entirely know how Harry would defeat Voldemort without any magic.
"You understate how much you are on Earth Captain. In fact, I believe that this period during the tournament will be the longest you will have been in close proximity in over 10 years", says Shrom with a hint of humor in his voice.
Potter just chuckles at that statement before asking Dumbledore, "Although it seems that I will not be able to learn the art myself Mr. Dumbledore, would you be willing to allow my crew to study it? I know that many of our researchers would be thrilled to have the chance".
Dumbledore thought on that a moment. At first, he wanted to deny Harry as it would be a rather big breach of the statute to allow muggles to research magic, but on the other hand he needed to gain Harry's trust back. So, after a few more seconds of planning he responds, "Although many in the wizarding world would deny that request, I am willing to entertain the idea. Although you might have to resign yourself to studying from Hogwarts library Captain as I just don't have the time to demonstrate every spell for your crew".
"That sounds great", responds Potter as Shrom states, "Acceptable", at the same time. Potter just glances at the Vulcan before continuing, "That would be plenty to occupy my crew's scientists for a while". He then claps his hands together before saying, "Alright now onto more pressing business, the tournament. When do you need me to do for that?".
"Since you will be competing in the tournament, I will need to introduce you to the school and other champions along with the ministry officials running the event", claims Dumbledore.
"When would you suggest we do this?", asks Potter.
"The best time would be tomorrow at Lunch. Your arrival tonight has attracted a lot of attention, so the sooner we re-introduce you to the wizarding world the better", responds Dumbledore.
"Alright, although we will need to come up with a cover story of where I have been. I have broken a few of my government's rules by just exposing my backstory and ship to you. And while I bent the rules for you, I cannot do so for the rest of your world", says Potter in a serious tone.
Dumbledore ponders how he could accomplish that for a few seconds before saying, "I can understand that, although would you allow me to explain your circumstances to the rest of the Hogwarts staff. It will be hard to explain your research to them if they don't know your backstory. They would also most likely get suspicious of you coming and going from the castle like I expect that you will be doing".
"That is agreeable to me. Although it might be easier for me to meet them, and we can both explain. Maybe before lunch tomorrow so they know what story we will be telling everyone else?", says Potter.
"While it would require some doing that is probably the best solution", states Dumbledore thinking about how he would need to cancel some classes tomorrow morning.
The conversation continues for a short while, mostly about the logistics of the meeting such as the time and location. After wrapping up and giving Dumbledore a communicator, he could contact them with, Shrom and Potter beam back up to the ship. As they disappear in a shimmer of light and sound Dumbledore just lets out a small sigh and begins the somewhat long walk back up to the castle in order to make his way to bed. After the ordeal he had gone through the earlier day and at night, he was completely exhausted and looking forward to passing out.
Potter strolled into his still lit room where M'Rala was waiting for him on the couch reading a PADD.
"So how did it go?", she asks looking up with the sound of the door.
"Not great, it seems like I can't do magic unfortunately. Although it isn't that big of a deal as it seems to be tied to the planet somehow. But still a little unfortunate", says Potter as he walks over to the dresser and begins to change into his nightwear.
Standing up M'Rala puts down the PADD and makes her way over, "Aww that is too bad. It seemed like you were a little excited about the prospect of doing magic".
"Yea. I mean who wouldn't be though? It seems like most cultures have stories about mystical events and people, so it must be a rather common desire", says Potter as he finishes pulling in his sweatpants.
"Did anything else interesting happen?", questions M'Rala sensing that her husband didn't want to talk about his inability to do 'magic' any longer.
The conversation continues as Harry makes his way to the bathroom, "A bit, I'm heading back down tomorrow to be reintroduced to their world. The old man is going to come up with a backstory to feed everyone".
M'Rala frowned a bit at that, "Are you going alone?".
"No, I was going to bring Shrom", responds Potter as he brushes his teeth. "He blends in well enough and with his Vulcan training in the mind no one should be able to read his thoughts and memories. Also, it seems as if the 'muggle repelling' measures they employ on the planet don't affect him". Potter brushes for a bit more before adding, "Also, he basically did the Vulcan equivalent of begging like a dog before I agreed to let him come with me. I think he finds the aspect of a hidden community of humans with strange powers very interesting and wants to gather as much data as he can".
"On that note did you ask about research opportunities?", asks M'Rala. She was particularly interested as she needed to come up with tasks to keep much of the crew occupied.
"I did in fact", responds Potter as he leaves the bathroom, "Dumbledore agreed to let us study the library at Hogwarts. From what he said it's a rather extensive collection and should be able to keep us occupied for a while".
"That's good", says M'Rala as she plops down on the bed. "Now come over here, I think someone could use a bit of snuggling after the events of today".
Harry grinned and joined his wife on the bed, "You always know what I need Honey".
"Of course, I do, you had a hard day. I know you don't like thinking about your past and now you need to confront it head on. And you also had the curveball of magic thrown in there. Who wouldn't need a bit of cuddling after that?".
Harry didn't respond to that, instead he just called out lights after giving M'Rala a kiss and wrapping his arms around her.
Authors Note 2: Hope everyone enjoyed that. The next chapter should be posted in two weeks, maybe one if I find myself with extra time over memorial day.

Yea the spelling thing was an oops, I'll try to do better at that in the future as it has never particularly been my strong suit.
Regarding Harry's attitude in the last chapter, remember he had just seen Dumbledore's memories of the wizarding world along with finding out about his past. So he is a bit pissed of at their world as a whole at the moment and in particular Dumbledore. And remember he does come from a life lived in the Federation, a utopia. The Wizarding world was pretty backwards and primitive compared to the rest of the world in the 1990's, just think about how poor it looks in comparison from where Harry has been living. Additionally he is not overtly concerned with the Wizards going extinct because humanity as a whole survives. The wizards going extinct is more like a culture dying out, something that has happened many times, not a species going extinct.
The issue of him learning magic was addressed in this chapter and will be touched on in future chapters, there's a reason for what is happening in this chapter.
I can't say much about the deal of having a starship as I don't want to spoil anything, but let it be said it will be utilized in a manner that should not come across as too OP.
Additionally thanks for the great feedback!
