Chapter 1: Letter to Amy
Jack called from the kitchen, "Amy, you have a letter. Looks like it's from Calgary."
Amy came out of her bedroom, took the letter, and as she opened it, she read:
"Imagine my surprise when I came across the Hudson Times and 'Miracle Girls' caught my eye! I had to take a second look to recognize Lyndy. It was hard to believe she is the toddler that I ice-skated with on the pond for what feels like such a short time ago. I don't know how you feel about her being thrust into the spotlight so young. I'd imagine not great, but how amazing! And Amy, she's just as beautiful as her mom and obviously is following in your magical footsteps! It was good to be reminded of my days with the Heartland family.
I just thought you might like another copy of the article. I hope all is well with you and all your family.
Mitch"
Amy folded the letter and returned it to the envelope as she thought, 'That's strange. Did I feel my heart leap a bit at his compliment. That would be crazy! Just get on with your day.'
"It's from Mitch. He sent a clipping of the Miracle Girls article. That was sweet of him. Doesn't say what he's doing."
"Well, last time we talked, he said he'd gone back to school," Jack replied.
"Oh, well that's good," Amy replied. She wasn't sure why, but she headed to her bedroom, took the article and taped it to the inside of her closet door and stowed the letter in the drawer of her bedside table.
A/N: I know many of us have been so saddened by losing both Graham and Kevin from the Heartland cast. And after Amy lost Ty, I've just not been able to imagine anyone else that could even come close to Ty other than Mitch. Finn was growing on me, but I know we were all shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of Robert.
I realize this pairing is a bit tricky with Mitch and Lou having been a couple, but I hope you find my handling of that conundrum believable and enjoy the story. The idea came to me one night trying to go to sleep in the middle of us keeping a close watch with forest fires on two sides of us, and it just wouldn't let go of me. This is my first ever attempt at writing fanfiction, much less a story such as this.
(For any reader who may not have watched all of Heartland, and if you don't mind spoilers, to set up this story for you: Ty and Amy were two of the main characters for thirteen seasons and their beautiful love story was central to the show. They married and had a daughter, Lyndy. Graham Wardle, who played Ty, decided to leave the show, so in the first episode of Season 14, Ty dies from an injury suffered when he saved Amy from a gunshot that could have killed her. Mitch and Lou (who is Amy's sister and was divorced from Peter) were in and out of a relationship for a little over five seasons starting toward the end of Season 9, and then at the end of Season 14, Mitch was dropped from the show. Mitch and Amy always had a very positive relationship in the show.)
