AN: Inspired by the Take a prompt, leave a prompt challenge on this Challenges and Chill discord. Also, I've taken the liberty of tweaking their ages a bit.
In retrospect, Arthur thought to himself, he should really have seen this coming.
When his two best friends dragged him into an empty classroom while he was on his way to dinner, he knew that he'd been rumbled.
There was no doubting the looks on their faces.
Hopefully Fabian and Gideon would understand. Well they probably wouldn't do anything too bad to him. Probably.
"So..." Fabian began with an unreadable expression on his face. His brother wore the same unreadable expression.
"We hear that you happened to have been caught out of bed last night." Fabian said, his expression remaining unchanged.
"That's naughty, don't you know?" Gideon said, nodding, with a very serious expression on his face and Arthur resisted the urge to snort. He knew full well that Gideon and Fabian considered school rules to be more guidelines than anything else.
"Don't you know that you shouldn't be caught out of bed?"
"I know, it's a terrible example to set to the younger students."
"Terrible. Just terrible," Fabian said, shaking his head in mock disappointment and Arthur felt a wave of relief flow through him. They didn't know the reason why he was out of bed so late. There was no way they would be like this if they knew. (He had seen how they interrogated the boys Molly had dated and it wasn't like this.)
"And after such a nice date with our little sister too," Gideon said with another mock shake of his head and Arthur suddenly felt his heart stop. How did they-
"You are not subtle mate," Fabian said as a grin rapidly crossed his face.
"Not subtle at all," Gideon added and Arthur felt the tips of his ears warm up.
"We even had bets on how long it would take for the two of you to even realise your feelings and start dating."
"The only thing we need to do is-"
"Ask you how long the two of you have been dating?"
Arthur looked at them in disbelief and the two brothers laughed in unison.
"You're...okay with us dating...?" Arthur asked with a slight sense of disbelief. Fabian looked at Gideon and Gideon looked at Fabian. Entire novels worth of conversations had been made through looks like that. This however was not one of those times.
"Well you've only been in love with her since fourth year-"
"Third."
Arthur opened his mouth to protest, but realised that they were in fact telling the truth. THAT was the real reason why he had disliked ALL of her boyfriends. Even the nicer ones. (Although NOBODY would call her last boyfriend nice.) He felt his face turn red and his two friends grinned. They were going to tease him about this for YEARS.
"Molly has felt exactly the same about you for the same amount of time," Fabian said with a shit-eating grin, his eyes twinkling with amusement. Arthur felt his face turn even redder.
"But every time you were available, she was dating someone else and every time she was available, you were dating someone else." Gideon shook his head in mock disappointment. "You two were the best show at Hogwarts."
"And you made us miss the ending," Fabian added with an expression of mock sadness, even as his eyes danced with laughter. "How could you do this to us?"
"Tragic, just tragic," Gideon said, shaking his head. Arthur was really starting to get fed up with the head shaking.
"So how long have you-"
"-and our dear little sister-"
"Been a couple?"
Arthur looked at Gideon and then at Fabian and tried to take the responsible approach.
"I don't think Molly would want me to tell you," he said and his two friends raised an eyebrow in perfectly matching fashion. He knew that Molly would have been fine with him telling them. They knew that Molly would be fine with him telling them. They knew it was an excuse and he knew that they knew. He might pretend that it was the responsible choice, but it was actually the being as infuriating as possible approach. (Besides, they deserved it for nearly giving him a heart attack. And treating them like some sort of show.)
"Arthur, Arthur, Arthur," Fabian said as he shook his head.
"You know how Molly would feel about you telling us."
"Especially when we already know that you're dating."
"And we do have a bet going on. You can't just let us remain in the dark like that."
"That would not do."
Arthur grinned. His two best friends were ridiculous. They'd probably be bringing it up at their seventy-fifth wedding anniversary in fact. (He couldn't believe that he was already thinking about marrying Molly. They had only been together for three months. Not that he was going to tell them that.)
"I'd say that it's been going on for about three months," Fabian said nonchalantly and Arthur almost choked on thin air.
"Probably," Gideon said in an equally nonchalant voice. Arthur stared at the two of them in disbelief. How in the name of Merlin's left testicle did they know!? He was sure that they had been discrete. No, he knew that they had been discrete. Carefully planned dates, good timing, greetings that were not any friendlier than normal. If it had been anyone else, he might have been even mildly annoyed. Or impressed.
"How...?" he began and both brothers grinned at him.
"You and Molly are not as subtle as you like to think."
"Not at all." Fabian agreed with a massive shit eating grin on his face.
"I admit that we didn't have any actual proof to confirm our suspicions," Gideon added and Arthur felt a small, irrational sense of relief.
"But the two of you are definitely not subtle," Fabian said. "The two of you have been wearing those ridiculous looks of happiness for the past few months every time you see one another."
"And the two of you are terrible at making excuses to get away." Gideon paused and sniggered briefly. "Going to see Professor Wayne because you needed help with your Muggle Studies homework was not your best excuse."
"Not at all," Fabian added with a mock look of disappointment. "I blame Gideon for your poor excuses."
"Fabian has really let you down in teaching you our skills."
"So are we right?"
Arthur burst out laughing and nodded.
AN: In case you can't tell, I had to rush this last part.
