Chapter 35
An: Thank you to my prereaders and beta. Without them, this would not be possible.

"When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?
And, darling, I will
Be loving you 'til we're 70
And, baby, my heart
Could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how
People fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Well, me, I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am
So, honey, now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are."
"Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran
"There you are." Bella sighed, startling Edward. "I should've known you'd be in your study. I've been looking everywhere for you."
"Sorry, shug. Is it time to head out?" He looked over his shoulder to meet his wife's gaze.
"It is," Bella replied, and walked over to where he was standing. She slid her arms around his waist, laying her head against his back and giving his middle a squeeze. "You okay, darlin'?"
Edward had on his favorite glove, the one that won him his first World Series. A sense of melancholy came over him as he looked back down at his mitt. He opened and closed it as he stared reverently at the worn leather center. Bringing the glove to his nose, he inhaled deeply. Still smells the same.
Edward exhaled as he took off his glove, laying in on the desk and turning in his wife's arms. "Never better." He leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. "I love you," he crooned.
"I love you too." Bella returned the kiss.
She ran her fingers through his silky locks and rested them at the nape of his neck, soothing him with her touch. She knew today was a huge day for not only the family and their son, but for Edward as well. Finding him in his study, contemplative and reminiscent, was not a surprise. Today he was passing the proverbial baton to his son. It was something they had all dreamed about, so emotions were running high.
"We need to get going, darlin', or we'll be late."
"Let's get moving, then." Edward's smile was wide as he took his wife's hand and led her out of the room. He glanced back one last time at his glove on the desk and closed the door.
Once they entered the kitchen, Bella went into full mom-mode, making sure they accounted for everyone.
"Riley still getting your parents?"
"He is."
"Maggie, Liam, and Ellie are still coming with him, right?"
"Yes, shug."
A small smile cracked at the corners of Edward's mouth as his wife kept pelting him with questions. He was relieved he wasn't the only one anxious about the day's events. She was always nervous when it had to do with one of their children. She wanted everything to be perfect.
"Rose and Emmett are meeting us there with my parents. And Matty and Micah are driving separately with their girlfriends," Edward reassured.
"Garrett and Kate?"
"They're meeting us at the gate. Take a breath, love." Edward trailed a finger over Bella's cheekbone. "Everyone who's anyone in our life will be there or will be watching on TV. CJ will not be disappointed."
"Good. I want everyone there to show their support."
"I know." Edward gathered his car keys off the counter and shouted, "Girls, it's showtime. Let's go!"
Bella grabbed her purse and ball cap and put it on her head. "I can't believe this is actually happening."
Edward blew out a large gust of air. "Me either, but it's happening."
"How are you not nervous, Mr. calm, cool, and collected? I'm losing my mind."
Edward wrapped his arms around his wife and pulled her close. "Oh, I'm nervous. But I've been in his shoes, and there's nothing you or I can do to alleviate what he's feeling right now."
"You're right. I just want to give him a hug." Bella sighed.
"You gave him a hug last night, shug. He's a grown man. He's got this."
"Edward, I don't care if he's a man…he'll always be my baby, and today's the biggest day of his life. Don't downplay—"
"Shh…I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You're right, baby." Edward wiped the tears that collected underneath his wife's eyes and hugged her. "I didn't mean to sound callous. It's a big day for CJ and a big day for us. My little trip down memory lane didn't make the day any easier for me either." Edward snorted. "It just made me feel old."
"You're not old," Bella assured.
"Well, my body tells me something different."
"I love this body." Bella drifted her hands to Edward's butt, squeezing it with both hands.
"My body loves you too, but if the girls come in here and see you molesting me, we're gonna be in trouble."
Bella giggled and released him. "You're right. Sorry, I always get carried away where you're concerned."
"Promise me you'll never stop."
"Never," Bella cooed as she ran her hands over the front of his polo shirt. "And I'm sorry. I didn't mean to downplay what you're feeling today. Of course, you're going through the same emotions. I just hope I've done enough for him; you know?
Edward tipped Bella's chin up and kissed her sweetly. "I do know. But let me say this…no one, and I mean no one, could have been a better mother to our son. And he knows it. He's carrying all of that with him today, just like I did when I got called up. I promise you, baby."
"I love hearing that. Thank you, darlin'. And don't sell yourself short here. He's also had the best dad in the world."
"We've always been quite the team."
"We have. And I'd do it all over again as long as it's with you."
"Me too, shug, me too."
Bella tugged Edward back into a kiss. He was always calming and steadfast where Bella was concerned. He could love her through anything.
"Not with the kissing again!" Charley Rae's voice rang out in the kitchen.
Bella and Edward broke their kiss and started laughing.
"Busted," Bella whispered.
"Charley Rae, stop gawking. Are you ready to leave? Where's your sister?" Edward asked.
"I'm right here," Cami chimed in as she walked into the kitchen.
"Where's Grey?"
"He's meeting us there. He had some things he had to do at work and couldn't make it back in time before we left. He's in the city anyway, so it's not a big deal," Cami replied as she put on her hat.
"Great." Edward rubbed his hands together. "Then let's hit it. I want to be there while they warm up so we can see him."
"Is Charlotte meeting us there or are we picking her up?" Cami asked as she grabbed her purse.
"She's already on her way. I think she's just as antsy as we are," Bella responded. "So, let's gets moving, shall we?"
~oOo~
"Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Atlanta Braves baseball. It's a special night here at Truist Park. I'm Jeff Francouer along with Tyler Crowley and Jasper Whitlock. Our very own Edward Cullen won't be in the booth with us tonight. It's a big night for the Cullen family. Edward will be passing the torch to his son Carlisle 'CJ' Cullen tonight as he makes his MLB debut as short stop. CJ comes from a long line of baseball players. He's named after his grandfather, the great hall-of-famer and former pitcher for the Braves, Carlisle 'The Cleaner' Cullen. His father, known as the 'Darling of Atlanta' for the last twenty-eight years, and a hall-of-famer in his own right, is a proud dad right now. Edward was a six-time Golden Glove winner, as well as a seven-time All-Star player, so CJ has some big shoes to fill.
"CJ was the fourth pick in the first round of the draft by the Atlanta Braves. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia where the Bulldogs were runners up in the Collegiate World Series. This Kennesaw, Georgia boy is the spitting image of his father, and he plays with just as much passion. His mother, Bella Swan Cullen, is a gold medal Olympian in women's soccer and was a star player for the Atlanta Storm. CJ was blessed with both his parents' talent, that's for sure. The apple didn't fall far from the trees.
"Once again, the number seven jersey bears the name Cullen. The stands are filling up quickly as the new 'Darling of Atlanta' makes his debut. I'm sure Edward doesn't mind passing that moniker over to his son. He's worn it well over the years."
"Look, there's Charlotte," Charley Rae cried out as she spotted her sister-in-law. She waved furiously at Charlotte, trying to catch her attention.
"Hey," Charlotte greeted everyone as she took her seat. "Sorry I'm late getting over here. I was talking to some of our friends who came."
"Hey, Charlotte." Everyone chimed in at the same time to greet CJ's wife.
"No worries, sweetie. How was he this morning?" Bella asked nervously.
"You know, besides being downright giddy, he was surprisingly calm."
"Good. I'm glad to hear that. It's a big day. I don't want his nerves to get the best of him."
Bella had been worried about her son since he got the call-up. She certainly didn't want history to repeat itself. And so far, it had not. Charlotte was the perfect partner for CJ. Having met during their freshman year in college, she had already been indoctrinated into the world of baseball. Once he was drafted, they made plans to marry after his first year. They hated being apart, and luckily, he was drafted to the city where they both grew up. Edward, Bella, and the girls adored her and were thrilled that she was now a part of their family.
"He's in a good headspace. And Dad called him this morning to check in," Charlotte said to the girls, then looked over at Edward and smiled. "I don't know what you said, but that call meant the world to him."
Edward shrugged. "Just gave him a pep talk, like my dad did. He has a good head on his shoulders. He's gonna do great."
As the team was announced, everyone cheered loudly, but no one cheered louder than the Cullens. There was no way CJ missed all the excitement.
The Braves were playing the Red Sox. CJ was number nine in the batting order. When he finally came to bat, Bella and Edward were on the edge of their seats. As he walked up to the plate, "Thunderstruck" blared out of the speakers, and the entire stadium of fans, including the proud Cullen family, was instantly on their feet, applauding and yelling, " Thunder," welcoming the newest Cullen to the Braves family.
Bella had tears in her eyes when she heard the riff of the intro and looped her arm in Edward's. It had been a long time since she'd heard that song at a ballgame, and all the memories came rushing back to the first time she came to watch Edward play.
"I love you," Bella whispered in Edward's ear.
He turned his head toward his wife with tears glistening in his eyes. "I love you too, shug."
"Did you know?"
"Nope. I'm just as surprised as you are."
"He never ceases to amaze me."
Edward chuckled. "Me either."
~oOo~
The Braves won the game 5-1 against the Red Sox. After CJ finished his interviews, everyone met up with him on the field to congratulate him.
CJ walked straight up to Charlotte first, hugging and kissing her with everything he had. He picked her up and spun her around. The glee in their laughs made everyone smile.
Bella, no longer the main woman in her son's life, waited patiently as they giggled and hugged and whispered sweet words to each other. She couldn't help but reminisce, replaying all the key moments of her relationship with Edward, where they did exactly what her son and daughter-in-law were doing. Once they let go of each other, Bella couldn't hold herself back anymore. She was one proud mother.
"Oh my God, CJ!" Bella cried out as she wrapped her son in her arms for a hug. "A home run. On your first bat. I can't believe it. I'm so proud, sweetheart."
CJ released his mom from the hug with a smile stretched wide across his face. "Hey, Momma." He ran his hand through his wet hair, just like his father used to. "Amazing, right? I'm still in shock."
"You were so great out there."
"Thank you. I never expected to crush that ball. Especially against that pitcher. I just wanted to make contact and not strike out."
Edward came up behind his son and slapped his hand on CJ's shoulder. "But you fucking crushed it."
With wide open arms, Edward welcomed his son into a hug. "I'm so proud of you, pal. What a game."
Embracing his father, CJ chuckled. "Thanks, Dad."
"Enjoy the moment. It all goes by quickly. I miss being out there every single day."
CJ smiled. "I know you do. Hey, at least you're still a part of the Braves. Now you have a cushy job sitting up in the booth."
Bella stood behind Edward and shook her head at CJ, hoping to silence him. CJ caught on immediately and cut himself off.
"Outstanding job, CJ." Carlisle went in for a hug. He must have read the room, because his timing was perfect, and Edward shifted his attention to his parents along with his son.
"We're so proud of you," Esme followed up, joining in on the hug.
"Thanks, Papa and Honey." CJ hugged his grandparents back. The smile on his face was pure bliss. "I'm so glad y'all were able to come."
"We wouldn't have missed it for the world. You make the Cullen name proud, my boy."
"You sure do, my man." Riley high-fived his nephew. "Way to show 'em who's boss on your first time at the plate. Now they know you ain't scared of anyone," Riley added, as his wife, Maggie, smiled proudly beside him.
It was obvious CJ was basking in all the attention, as he should have been. It was a huge moment for him in his career. Edward winked at Bella as they took a step back and let the rest of the crew in to speak to their son.
Charlie and Renee, then Rose and Emmett, came in next, clamoring around the man of the hour. His cousins and friends soon gathered around, trying to make some plans to go out and celebrate.
"Y'all want to go out with us?" CJ asked his parents.
"Thank you, baby. Go celebrate with your people. It's been a big day for your dad and me. I think we'll take a rain check. Next time?" Bella asked.
"Absolutely. But y'all know you're still my people and more than welcome to come."
"We know, my love. We know. Thank you for saying so." Bella hugged her son one last time.
"Have a great time. You deserve it." Edward shook his son's hand and pulled him in for a hug.
"Thanks, Dad."
Edward pulled back and placed his hands on CJ's shoulders. "I'm so fucking proud of you. You know that?"
CJ's Adam's apple bobbed. "Yes, sir."
"Don't you ever forget that. No matter what you do, no matter how your career goes, I will always be proud of you. I love you, son."
CJ looked at his dad with tears glistening in his eyes and nodded. "Thank you for being the best dad a man could ever have."
Edward swallowed a lump in his throat. "Thank you for being best son a father could ever ask for."
~oOo~
The drive back from the stadium was filled with chatter as Edward replayed the whole game. Cami had left with her fiancé, Grey, and Charley Rae went with her cousins and her brother to celebrate. So, it was just Bella listening to her husband go on and on about not only their son, but the team as a whole as well. It had been a long while since he had been that excited about the Braves.
"I'm thinking they can go all the way," Edward said confidently.
"Shut the front door."
"I'm serious. They have the talent and all the right players for a perfect team."
"What a ride that would be for CJ. His first big year in the show and he goes all the way to the World Series."
"I know. I can't stop thinking about it." Edward paused for a moment, considering all the possibilities. "I've been thinking about it all year, and now that CJ is on the roster…" Edward whistled. "Damn."
"Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Tonight was his first night."
"I know. It's just kinda blown my mind thinking about the year he could have. He has the talent. He just has to stay healthy."
"We'll just have to see how it all plays out, won't we?" Bella took off her hat and pulled her hair out of a ponytail.
"We will."
"Okay, now that today's over, we have things to discuss." Bella took Edward's hand and squeezed it. "So, I want your attention bright and early tomorrow."
"Yes, ma'am. What's on the agenda?" Edward side-eyed his wife, not wanting to take his eyes off the road. He had a feeling what she was going to say.
"Charley Rae's soccer schedule and the wedding."
Edward white-knuckled the steering wheel. He was not ready for that day to come. He still loved having his baby girl in the house. She'd been living there since she graduated college and started her master's at Georgia Tech. The older Edward got, the more he hated change. And marrying his daughter off was going to be a big change. Having CJ out of the house and married was already a huge adjustment. He'd barely been home as it was between baseball and college.
"I know you have some heartburn about this, but we need to lock down a place. Cami has her heart set on doing it out at the Ritz on Lake Oconee. They're holding a few dates for us, so we need to go out there and visit this weekend."
"Okay. We'll go out and look." Edward combed his fingers through his hair.
"Edward Cullen, are you pouting?"
"No." He shook his head as he pulled into the garage. He turned off the ignition and turned to his wife.
Bella reached out and rubbed her thumb across his bottom lip. "It sure looks like a pout."
"Maybe you need a closer look, just to make sure." Edward leaned over the console and kissed his wife senseless.
~oOo~
"Shug…"
Bella twirled, showing off her gown to her husband. "How do I look?"
"You look stunning." Edward wrapped his arms around Bella and pulled her to him. "It's not fair to Cami that everyone's eyes will be on the mother of the bride."
"Hush, you. Just wait until you see your Cami. You'll forget all about little ole me."
"Impossible. How can I ever forget you or the night we made her? It was the start of our family."
"It was. And it was hot." She giggled. "About as hot as you look in your tux right now." Bella smoothed her hands down the front of his lapels.
"Hell yeah, it was." Edward leaned down and brushed his lips over hers. "And so was last night."
"You're so naughty." Bella squealed as she playfully hit her husband on the shoulder.
"Ouch." Edward rolled his shoulder, feigning the pain.
"Oh, please. Mr. big, strong baseball player."
"I'm not the big, strong baseball player anymore, baby."
"You'll always be my baseball player, darlin'."
Edward smirked. "Damn straight I am."
Feeling cheeky, he pulled away from his wife and held out his hand. "Mrs. Cullen, may I have this dance with the most beautiful woman in the world?"
A blush bloomed over Bella's cheeks. This man could still make her heart jump with a single word or gesture. Though there was no music in the room, Bella readily accepted and let him pull her into his arms.
"In the world?"
"In my world." Edward kissed her lips.
He danced them slowly around the hotel suite, enjoying a private dance before the festivities began.
"You're so beautiful," Edward whispered against the shell of her ear.
Bella's heart raced. She snuggled closer to his chest. Being in his arms was still her favorite place to be.
"I'd marry you all over again, shug. If I could."
"I'd marry you all over again too. No regrets."
"Zero regrets."
Edward released Bella and twirled her. "You've made me the happiest man, shug. Sometimes there are no words to tell you how great this life has been with you. All I know is that every morning and every night when I lay my head down, all I see is you and our family. So, thank you."
Bella twirled back into her husband's arms. "Weddings have a way of bringing up all these feelings, don't they?"
"They do. They definitely intensify them. But I have to say, I feel them every day."
"You're such a sap. And I love you for it. More today than when we first got married. I didn't know that was even possible, but it is." Bella squeezed him tighter. After what he just confessed, her words seemed lacking, compared to his heartfelt sentiment.
"I love you too, baby."
"I pray that our kids find the same kind of love in their marriages that we have."
Edward ghosted his hand down Bella's back. "Oh, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't settle for anything less. Think about it. They grew up in a home with two parents who love each other madly. Knowing our kids, they will find the same passion in their marriages."
"One can only hope."
They sashayed around the room for a few more minutes, Edward humming a tune as they giggled and reminisced in each other's arms.
"Daddio's still got the moves," Charley Rae said as she walked into the suite.
"I'll show you moves." Edward paused the dancing and dipped Bella back, sealing the dip with a kiss before bringing her back up.
Charley Rae clapped her hands. "I know I tease y'all a lot, but seriously, y'all are so beautiful together."
"Thank you, sweetheart. Your dad and I are just feeling all the things today."
"I can see that."
"Is she ready for Daddy's first look?"
"She is," Charley Rae responded.
"Hold on." Bella left her husband's arms and grabbed a bag off the bed. She pulled something out and handed it to her husband. "You can't forget the sixpence."
Edward took the coin. "Thank you."
"And the tape."
He took the tape as well and handed it to Charley Rae. "Hold these please."
Edward kissed his wife goodbye and walked to the door. He glanced back over his shoulder and smiled at Bella one last time. The twinkle in his eye was a promise that he planned to pick up where they left off later that night, but right then, he had fatherly duties to perform.
Cami stood in a room off the beaten path, reserved just for this moment. She had taken pictures with her bridesmaids in the room earlier, and now it was time just for her and her father.
Edward entered the room smiling brightly, anticipating the emotions that would be coursing through his veins once he saw their daughter. As expected, he was blinded by the beauty that stood by the window, waiting for him. How could this beautiful creature be a part of him? She was the spitting image of her mother, and he found himself thinking of the first moment he saw Bella as she walked down the aisle to him.
"Cami…" he whispered. "You're beautiful."
The room was bathed in a warm white glow and made everything look ethereal. The pictures were going to be stunning.
Edward walked over to his daughter and hugged her. He didn't want to let his baby girl go. Bittersweet happiness gripped his chest as his eyes stung with tears. He replayed the passage of time in his mind as he held his daughter. Time was a cruel mistress. He wanted more of it, but his time with her had come to an end. This was it. His daughter was officially leaving the nest.
The photographer walked around capturing all the special moments between a father and his daughter, while trying their best not to be intrusive.
Cami broke the embrace and admired her father. "Daddy, look how handsome you look. You're going to be a hit with all the single ladies and bridesmaids."
"There's only one woman for me, Cami bear."
"Trust me, I know." Cami smiled and adjusted her veil. "And I hope our marriage is as wonderful and loving as yours and Mom's is."
"It will be, sweetheart. Grey's a wonderful young man. You know how much we love him. I couldn't have picked a better husband for you. He'll treat you exactly the way you deserve."
"Thank you, Daddy."
Charley Rae cleared her throat from the doorway, signaling for her dad to come get the coin.
"Time for the sixpence."
Edward walked over and took the coin and the tape from his younger daughter's hand. "Thank you, sweetie."
Charley Rae nodded and left the room.
Cami sat on the chair beside the window and took off her slipper.
Edward kneeled in front of her and laid the silver coin in her shoe. "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a lucky sixpence for your shoe."
Edward taped the coin down securely and put the slipper back on his daughter. He helped her up and twirled her around like he used to do when she was a little girl.
"May you have all the luck and prosperity in your marriage as your mother and I have had. I love you, baby girl."
"I love you too, Daddy."
~oOo~
The wedding was beautiful. Edward and Bella were the perfect hosts, and their darling girl and her new husband had the time of their lives. When the reception finally wound down, and the couple had said their goodbyes, Edward and Bella retreated to their suite.
"It really was perfect, wasn't it?" Bella asked as she took off her earrings and other jewelry.
"It was." Edward stared out the window, looking at the lake below them.
"You had a sad, wistful look on your face for most of the night. You okay?"
Edward sighed as he ran a hand through his hair. "I am. I was just sad. It was hard to come to grips with the fact that I gave my little girl away tonight."
Bella walked up to her husband and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I know, baby. It was a big day for you."
"It was." Edward needed to see Bella's face, so he took her hands and unwrapped them from his waist, spinning her around and pressing her back to the window. He rested his forehead against hers, whispering the words that gripped his heart. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done, placing her hand into Grey's. And I love the boy."
"Oh, lovey. I know it was. She's not going anywhere, you know? They'll be right here in Atlanta."
Despondently, he raised his head and looked out at the lake over Bella's head. "I know."
"I'm going to miss her too." Bella's voice quavered. "It'll be hard not to see her at the breakfast or dinner table every day or hear about her day the way we always have. It'll be a new normal."
"Damn…" Edward shook his head. He hadn't even thought of those things yet. Knowing that Bella felt the same way made this an easier pill for him to swallow. "We're quite the pair, aren't we?"
"We are. And now I feel guilty knowing what we put our parents through." Bella giggled.
"Shitfire, you're right."
"The best part…" Bella's voice cracked. "The best part is that we've gained a new son. And he does think you walk on water."
Edward snorted. "Well, thank God for that."
They laughed together for a few moments. They were never ones to wallow.
"Thanks for putting things in perspective." Edward smiled, then contemplated. "Now I feel like I owe my parents an apology."
"You wanna call Esme and Carlisle right now?" Bella smoothed her hands over her husband's fine ass, taunting him.
"No." Edward trailed his fingers up the sides of her body, resting on her hips. He curved his hands over her hipbones, feeling and squeezing, pulling her closer. "I don't want anyone but you right now."
"Good."
"You were so beautiful tonight, shug." He reached out and swirled a lock of Bella's hair between his fingers. "You stole my heart all over again. Just like that first night."
"We are against a window," Bella teased. "Just like that first night."
Edward arched a brow. "Hmm… We are, aren't we?" He tickled her sides, making her giggle.
"What would my life have become had we not met that night?"
"You'll never have to know. And if it wasn't for you, I'd never have known what real love is." Bella tilted her head up and kissed him softly. "You love so hard, Edward Cullen."
Edward cupped her face, his thumbs tracing along her cheekbones. His mouth descended on hers once again as his tongue slid across her bottom lip, begging to enter. He needed to taste her, feel her, get lost in her.
"I do love you…hard." Edward thrusted his lower half into Bella, eliciting a breathy moan.
"Edward…"
"This is what you do to me, baby. What you still do to me." He kissed a path down her neck. "I will never get enough of you."
"How did we ever get so lucky?" Bella panted.
"Because you saved me, shug. You saved me from myself. It will always be you, Bella. There was never a choice. It was always and has always been you."
"Oh, darlin', don't you know? We saved each other."
An: There you have it. A small peek into the future of Darlin' and Shug. I hope it gives you some happy feels for these two and their beautiful family.
