It was a bright, sunny day in the small town of Koge within the Fukuoka prefecture of Japan. The weather was fairly muggy with the hum of cicadas filling the air as a young boy lay in the grass of his grandparents' front yard, idly flying an All Might action figure through the air alongside a Gang Orca figure despite the power of flight not being in Gang Orca's arsenal. In his little play session by himself, he had All Might and Gang Orca team up to beat up some bad guys using hypnosis to control other superheroes. In his head, it was a fairly climatic battle, one that decided the fate of the world and all that stuff… but as this epic fantasy came to a close… Izuku couldn't help but look toward the fence that separated his grandparents' property from some fields that lay just beyond.
Izuku, at least at the age of four, didn't exactly understand why he was only allowed to play in their yard. He was really curious about what lie beyond the fence, and honestly Izuku just really wanted some others his own age to play with. At least in the city he had a few friends, the ones who didn't cry when he came near them, but out here it was mostly just himself when his grandparents or his own parents weren't trying to entertain him. It was fun, of course, he loved spending time with them but it just couldn't replace some fun times with kids his age. Today, Izuku decided to boldly go where no Izuku had gone before… and thusly snuck out through a crack in the fence and explored the fields just past their land.
Izuku ran for quite a bit through the long fields of tall grass before coming to a pasture which was cut a lot shorter. There, Izuku saw a group of boys huddled together laughing and seemingly playing around together. With a slight gulp, Izuku came over to meet the boys.
When Izuku arrived, the boys turned and looked at him with what he thought was surprise at the time. That look though soon changed to disgust. Though this small town had several families with prominent physical mutations, there was still a heavy air of bigotry that pervaded the atmosphere of this quiet, rural town. Most didn't outright attack them or keep them separated from the other, more normal looking humans but often they'd get strange or hateful looks from those passing. To many, that was just life around here, and though some of this may happen in the city, Izuku's parents still hadn't properly sat down to have this talk with him yet.
The boys initially looked between each other and whispered.
"Who is this blue freak?" Asked one boy.
"No idea, I've never seen him before." Said a boy with a protrusion on his head like a horn that'd been cut off near the base.
"He could be related to Old Man Sanada. You all know how freaky his wife and daughter are..." Said another boy.
Meanwhile, as the boys whispered and talked among themselves, Izuku couldn't help but fidget slightly, tugging at the front of his red shirt slightly. He didn't really know what they were whispering about, but he had to figure they were talking about him.
"I-I'm I-Izuku. Izuku Midoriya." He said, looking down at the ground. "I-It's nice to meet you." He said with a slight smile. "U-Umm, c-could I join in and play with you?" He asked innocently.
In the group, there seemed to be a collective consensus that they didn't want anything to do with this freaky looking devil boy. The group was about ready to tell him to go jump in the lake or something when a slightly older, taller boy stepped out and smiled wickedly at the boy.
"Nice to meet you Izuku. I'm Tohru Jabami. Of course you can play with us, we were just about to start a new game." He said as he began looking to the other, confused boys.
"Oh, really?!" Izuku said excitedly.
"That's right! And you get the most special part in it!" Tohru said as the other boys, not really fully understanding the plan, began to come around.
"Really? What're we playing?" Izuku asked, still excited that he'd finally had others around his age to play with while here.
"Heroes vs. Villains…" Tohru grinned, soon the other boys beginning to grin as well.
"Oh…" Izuku said, slightly downcast now. "I-I… Could we play something else? Maybe tag?" He asked hopefully.
"What's wrong? Don't like heroes?" Tohru asked in an almost accusing manner.
"H-Huh? N-No, I love heroes. My daddy's a hero. I just…" He paused. "I don't like playing this game… At school they always make me play the villain."
"Well good, because that's what you are." Tohru said as he stepped forward and gripped Izuku by his shaggy, green locks. "You see, we're all gonna be super cool heroes when we grow up, and we're gonna make sure villains with ugly mugs like you get put in your place." He said, pushing the blue-furred boy to the ground which made him cry out, much to the amusement of the other boys.
Tears began to well up in the blue-furred boy's yellow eyes. He looked up at the other boys as they began to move near him. "W-Why? I-I'm not a villain…"
Tohru pointed at Izuku. "No hero could ever have a face like that, and besides, you're already a villain… You're trespassing on private property. Which means, as heroes, it's our job to dispense justice!"
The taller boy began to reach toward Izuku but, as he got closer Izuku grabbed a handful of grass and dirt and threw it in his face, making him stumble back as Izuku scrambled to his feet and began to run.
"Argh!" Tohru rubbed at his face and spat away the grass and dirt near his lips. "After him!" He called out as the boys began to chase him.
Izuku proved to be a lot faster than the other boys had anticipated. As Izuku tore through the adjacent fields of tall grass some of the pack had spread out to try and cut him off. Once Izuku spilled out of the grass and onto the dirt road that would've taken him home one of the boys grabbed him by the leg which made him fall face first into the dirt.
The larger boy with the half-horn on his head had managed to successfully cut him off and gripped tightly at his ankle.
"I got him! Over here!" The boy called out.
As the boy reached forward and tried to grab his other leg Izuku turned and made his tail whip out, smacking the boy across his face and leaving a scratch across his cheek which made him let go.
Izuku scrambled and tried to get back up to his feet only to get knocked back slightly by something hard and wet hitting him in the face.
Standing ahead of him now, blocking his path home, was the Tohru boy, holding a water bottle in his hand. "You're not going anywhere fuzzball.." He said, pouring a little bit of the water on his hand and pointing his finger in a gun-like position at Izuku, making a bang motion with his hand and shooting a small pellet of water at his head with enough force to take him off his feet.
Izuku fell back clutching his head as the boys began to surround him. With a sniffle and tears at the corner of his eyes, he began to plead his case. "P-Please… I-I'm not in your yard… J-Just let me go home…"
Tohru shook his head as he came over. "Can't. As heroes, we've gotta teach you not to do it again!"
Tohru then began to rain down punches on the boy as the others either kicked at Izuku, punched at him, or kicked dirt at him, forcing Izuku to curl up to try to protect his face and midsection from the abuse.
After a moment of attacking Izuku like this Tohru gripped Izuku by his hair and pulled him up. "Take this villain!" As Tohru was about to throw another punch at Izuku there was a clatter behind Tohru like something dropping to the ground and just before he could throw the punch, a hand gripped at his wrist to stop him.
"What the…" Tohru turned and soon saw a boy who was only a bit taller than the blue boy. He had white hair that swept forward and covered over half of his face. The boy also had fairly prominent physical mutations like the other, what with his face being elongated and not having a nose, his mouth being far larger and stretching to the sides of his face, and of course those two additional sets of arms below his regular set which were interconnected by webbing.
Tohru knew who this kid was even if he was a few grades below him. "Butt out of this squid boy, it doesn't concern you. Why don't you run on home to the rest of your freaky family?"
The boy didn't seem to be fazed in the slightest. Behind the boy was a fishing pole and tackle box that seemed to have been hastily tossed aside so he could jump in.
"Leave him alone." Was all the boy seemed to say while staring forward at Tohru, soon pushing him aside and stepping in close to the crying, blue furred boy now covered in dirt and bruises.
"What're you gonna do about it?" Tohru asked, shoving the boy which made him move back only slightly, still keeping his ground and staring at him.
The boy gave him no response to his question, he hadn't even put up his hands to fight them, despite them clearly eager to lay into him.
"Whatever problem you've got with him, you can finish with me." The boy said, staring daggers at Tohru who seemed to get even angrier at that.
Tohru just smirked a bit as the other boys began to crack their knuckles to start laying into this boy. "Fine… Beating on two villains is even better than one." Tohru then landed a hard right to the boy's jaw, making him spin slightly as he turned and knelt down over Izuku. The white-haired boy then extended his arms out, the webbing on each side helped create a shield to block the larger kids from landing any more blows on the crying blue kid.
All four of the other boys and Tohru all started punching and kicking at the while-haired boy's back and arms as he knelt over Izuku, who was starting to wipe his eyes and some of the dirt off of his face.
"W-Why? T-They're hurting you!" Izuku asked him, teary-eyed, seeing that despite the white-haired boy doing his best to keep a neutral face these punches and kicks were actually hurting him.
"I-I couldn't just stand by and do nothing." He said simply, soon a hard kick from one of the boys catching him under the chin and making him fall sideways, the boys more focused on hitting the white-haired boy than Izuku now.
Izuku turned over and saw that even though he wasn't protecting him anymore, the boy still wasn't fighting back.
"S-Stop it! Stop hurting him!" Izuku said, but it fell on deaf ears as the boys kept laughing and attacking the other boy.
Izuku slowly got up and scrambled over, pushing one of the boys out of the way to throw himself over the one who saved him. "Stop it! Leave him alone!"
"Get him!" Was all Tohru said as they focused in on Izuku again, who lowered his head and took the brunt of some of the attacks now. In his head, all he could think about was home. He could picture the living room area of his grandparent's house very easily. The wooden floors with the deep red circular rug, the dark wooden table at the center with the dark green couch at the back and his grandfather's favorite imported leather chair he proclaimed as his own that Izuku secretly sat in when he wasn't around. All the features of the room appeared in his mind and he wanted more than anything to be there instead of here.
Izuku then felt a tug in his gut and soon the hot, muggy air that had been filling his nose was replaced with cool air and the familiar fragrance of his grandmother's scented candles. He thought he may be imaging it but he also noticed they weren't getting attacked anymore. Izuku slowly opened his eyes and looked around, sitting back on his knees as the white-haired boy sat up and looked around as well.
"W-Where are we?" He asked as he stood up quickly in wonder.
Izuku stood up as well after he did, his legs feeling a bit sore after running so far as well as from all the hits he took. "W-We… we're in my grandparent's living room…"
"We got here so quickly… Did you… ?" The white hair boy asked him.
Izuku looked down at his hands for a moment. Had he teleported them here? He'd been waiting for his Quirk to manifest like the others in his class but so far no luck… did he really just teleport them?!
Izuku looked toward the door and, in his mind, he began to picture the hallway just outside the door and pushed his hands out. He focused harder and harder in his mind but there had to be something else… That tugging feeling? He began to imagine that feeling again and soon opened his eyes, seeing that he was now standing in the hall.
Izuku quickly turned around and opened the door to see the surprised boy. "I-I can teleport!" Izuku shouted in amazement! Izuku had hoped he might get shapeshifting like his mother or even fire breathing like his father but… this was something new, and it was so cool! Izuku teleported the few feet over to the boy and smiled wide. "This is so cool!"
"That's amazing." He said, eyes still widened from what he had just seen.
Izuku then heard rapid, heavy footsteps from down the hall and soon a blue woman with short dark green hair slid into the doorframe. She was only about five feet tall and a little heavier set with grey streaks in her hair. Behind her was a slight taller, thinner blue woman with green shoulder length hair partially tied back into a spiky ponytail. "Izuku! There you are!" Both of them said as they came into the room to look over Izuku.
"Izuku! Where were you?! Were you in here all this time?" Said the shorter of the two women, his grandmother, Akie Sanada.
"No, he couldn't have been mother, we checked. Oh look how dirty you are… Hold still Izuku." His mother, Inko Midoriya, said as she pulled a cloth out of her pocket and began trying to wipe his face.
"M-Mom, w-wait, I need…" Izuku tried to get out, struggling with the cloth wiping at his face. He managed to move himself back just enough to get free, and much to their surprise he vanished, shocking both deeply before he tapped them on their backs and made them turn in shock.
"I got my Quirk!" Izuku said excitedly as both women stared at him briefly before both teared up and began crying waterfalls of tears that seemed ready to fill the living room floor as they hugged him.
"My baby has his Quirk!" Inko Midoriya said as she hugged him tightly, clearly relieved that her son's Quirk had finally manifested, even if she was a little worried that it wasn't like either her own or her husbands.
The white-haired boy shuffled awkwardly as he watched the scene. "Hey, listen, I'm glad you're okay now but I should probably be getting home. If I'm late my mom is going to worry."
The two women noticed the boy now that their worry over Izuku had faded. Just before either could say anything Izuku broke free of their grasp and came over to the white-haired boy and bowed to him. "T-Thank you for saving me!" Izuku said, bowing over and over in a rather comedic way which only made the boy's eyes follow him up and down with each one before stopping him with his hand on his shoulder.
"It's no problem, really." Said the white-haired boy.
Izuku stopped and smiled, nodding. "I'm Izuku Midoriya, it's nice to meet you." He said, extending a hand to him.
"Mezo Shoji." He said, taking his hand and shaking it.
Inko cleared her throat in that motherly way that made both of them turn in attention as she crossed her arms. "Izuku, what happened?"
Izuku then began to relay today's events, of getting bored and crawling out through the fence to running into those boys and their impromptu game of "Heroes vs. Villains". He also relayed the chase to her and Shoji stepping in when the boys started hitting him. Then of course relaying how they got home. There were some childish embellishments in his story. He didn't heroically leap over the fence to escape, he didn't run so fast he broke the sound barrier, and Mezo didn't appear in a flash of light, but Inko didn't have trouble picking out the true parts of her son's story.
Inko was very naturally shocked and appalled some boys would gang up on her son like that but she knew that… well that's just how it was around here. That's why they didn't want him going anywhere without one of them. This Quirk of Izuku's though… well it was almost relieving that it wasn't something like her own or her husbands. A Quirk like this… Izuku could teleport himself out of danger instantly. She'd be sure to tell him to do that in the future, even if Quirk usage without a license was frowned upon, she couldn't bare the thought of something or someone hurting her son when he could've easily saved his own life.
Inko sighed slightly and turned to look at Mezo. "Thank you for helping my son, you're a very brave boy."
"Yes, thank you." Said Akie as well. "Before you go, let us get you cleaned up. I'll get my husband to walk you back to your house to make sure you get home safe."
"N-No, that's okay. You don't have to go through that trouble." Shoji said, worrying a bit about how much trouble they were going to.
"It's no trouble. Besides, I think someone should explain to your parents what happened as well and give them our thanks as well." Akie said as she stood up and went to find her husband, Goro Sanada. She had sent Goro and her son-in-law Hasashi to look around outside for Izuku, both would be relieved that Izuku was found.
Inko took both Izuku and Mezo to the kitchen and used a damp cloth to clean their faces as well as using some medicinal ointment to their scrapes and bruises.
Once Hisashi and Goro came back in, and Izuku got a scolding from Hisashi about sneaking out like he did, Goro got ready to take Shoji home.
"Did you guys move to town or are you just visiting.?" Mezo asked Izuku as they sat at the kitchen counter, idly drinking the juice provided to the two of them while they waited for Goro Sanada.
"We're just visiting. We try to come in during the summers. I don't go into town much, mostly when we're here we stay in home." Izuku said while kicking his legs slightly, which was met with a nod.
"Makes sense." Mezo said, knowing why the Midoriya's probably didn't go out into town much. He knew Mrs. Sanada very rarely went into town without Mr. Sanada, whom out of the two seemed to look the most normal.
Goro Sanada was a man standing at about 5'8" with a slightly athletic build, windswept grey hair and a rather prominent handlebar mustache that stuck out past his cheeks and curled in at the tops. All over his body, though you'd only notice if you looked very closely, he had tan scales. These were a by-product of his Quirk, Camouflage, which allowed him to blend into the environment. Inko Midoriya's Quirk was thought to be a sort of combination of this and Akie's quirk to change the appearance of objects she could hold in her hand, the combination of these quirks manifested in a way that allows inko to change her own appearance, or shapeshift, and she became rather proficient at it.
Goro came back into the kitchen after a moment now dressed in a red dress shirt, grey hat, and dark pants. "Alright, young Shoji, let's get you back home safely."
Mezo nodded to the man, the two boys standing up and following him to the entrance where he slipped on his shoes and Shoji put his own back on.
While they did that, Izuku turned to his mom and dad who had walked into the hall with his grandmother to see Goro and Mezo off. "Mom, dad, can I go with them? I'd like to hang out with Shoji just a bit longer."
Hisashi frowned a bit and knelt down to be eye level with Izuku. "Haven't you had enough of an adventure for one day?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
Mezo could see that, aside from the color of the small blue fur covering Izuku, he had inherited most of his looks from his father. Both had those piercing, full yellow eyes, the slightly sharper canines, the pointed tail, and the oddly-shaped hands and feet, the only exception being that Hisashi Midoriya was red instead of blue with shaggy red hair of a slightly darker shade, having a thin goatee that was also the same slightly darker shade of red.
Izuku looked at his feet and didn't meet his father's gaze for a moment. He still wanted to protest but… well his dad had already scolded him for what happened today.
Hisashi looked up from his crouched position to look at his wife, idly swishing his tail as he saw her smile. A brief moment of non-verbal communication later and Hisashi sighed and put his hand on Izuku's head. "Fine…" He stood up and raised one of the fingers on his hand. "But! You do not leave your grandfather's side the entire time! And no teleporting away from him, I mean it…" He said, then crossing his arms.
Izuku looked up and nodded happily, giving his mom, dad, and grandma a hug before he ran over and took his grandfather's hand to leave. "Thank you!" He called back to them as they left.
Izuku walked alongside his grandfather and Mezo down the dirt road that led to their house. During this time, they'd both shared their favorite heroes that they liked and both found that Gang Orca was their favorite despite him still being a fairly newcomer on the scene. Izuku also told him about his own parents being heroes, or rather his dad being a hero and his mom being retired. Izuku also talked about other heroes like All Might until they reached the part of the path where the two had ran into those boys.
"I had a feeling…" Mezo said as he walked over and picked up the remains of what had once been his fishing pole. Along the path, where Mezo had threw down his fishing stuff to help Izuku, the boys had scattered the entire contents of his tackle box, the path strewn with various tackles and hooks. The remains of his bait had been completed dumped out into the grass and the containers tossed aside. And finally, his fishing pole, which they had snapped completely in half as well as ruining all his fishing line.
Izuku looked down a bit and stared at the stuff. "I'm really sorry Shoji. They broke all your stuff because you jumped in to help me…"
"It's fine… It's stuff. It'll take time, but it can be replaced." Mezo said, though it was clear he was upset over what they'd done.
Izuku knelt down and began picking up whatever could be salvaged from all this, mostly just the tackles and hooks.
Goro also knelt down, albeit with a bit of trouble, and helped his grandson. "You're a good kid, Shoji. Some people wouldn't jump in, especially with those odds."
Shoji turned to look at him and looked down, nodding a bit before kneeling down to help. "Thank you sir." Once they got what they could, they continued toward the Shoji household. Once they arrived Goro knocked and once let in he began to speak to Shoji's parents regarding what happened today.
"Hey Shoji?" Izuku asked as he looked over to Mezo in the entrance way.
"Yeah?" Mezo asked as he looked over to him, taking his shoes off.
"Do you think you'd like to play together tomorrow? It'd be nice to play with someone that, you know, isn't going to beat me up this time." Izuku said as he stepped into the hallway with Mezo.
Mezo thought for a moment. "I should be able to finish up my chores early so… sure, I'd like that."
Izuku smiled widely at him. "That's great! I can't wait!" He said, teleporting forward slightly and opening the door for Mezo to enter the living room area where his grandfather and Shoji's parents were talking.
After that, Mezo Shoji and Izuku Midoriya spent a lot of time together that summer and became very close friends. Whether it was from playing with either of their action figures, playing tag together, video games, or even Shoji teaching Izuku how to fish, the duo always managed to have fun, and though it sometimes took a bit of work from Izuku he managed to pull Mezo out of his shell a little and get him to laugh.
As the last day of Izuku's family trip rolled around, Mezo and Izuku found themselves sitting on the small wooden pier on the lake that they'd been fishing from this last month, both watching the sunset while still trying to catch one last fish together.
So far… the two didn't have any luck.
"You'll be leaving tomorrow, right?" Mezo asked him, using the upper two arms to hold the fishing pole while using the lower two sets to hold himself up as he leaned back.
"Yeah. Pretty early in the morning too from what Mom says since we have to head to the city to catch our flight back home." Izuku said, sitting cross-legged and idly swaying side to side.
"I see. Well it's been fun hanging out with you this last month. We should play together again the next time you come in." Mezo Shoji said, looking over to him and smiling.
"Yeah!" Izuku said excitedly before quieting down a bit, realizing he may be scaring the fish.
The two sat in silence for a bit before Izuku looked over to Mezo. "Hey, Mezo."
"Yeah Izuku?" Mezo said, looking over.
"What do you wanna be when you grow up?" Izuku said.
Shoji looked forward and thought for a moment. Of course, there was the possibility he could become a fisher, like his father. He certainly liked to fish, the sea was in his blood and those few times he was on his dad's ship was great but…
"I wanna be a hero." Mezo said, looking to Izuku.
"Me too!" Izuku said enthusiastically.
Mezo leaned forward and put his fishing pole in a hole in the deck, standing up. "I wanna be a hero that helps others understand that it doesn't matter how someone looks. Like Gang Orca. That just because we look different it doesn't mean we should be treated different." He said, clenching a fist.
Izuku stared up at him in wonder before nodding and standing with him after fixing his own fishing pole like he did. "Right! Let's be heroes together then Mezo!" Izuku said, outstretching a hand to him.
Mezo looked at it briefly then smiled, shaking his hand and nodding. "Let's both become great heroes!"
As the two boys stood there shaking hands, there came the familiar sound of fishing line being pulled, both looking to their rods. Mezo saw his own was fine but it seemed Izuku got a bite!
"Quick, Izuku, reel it in!" Mezo said, Izuku quickly turning and picking up his fishing pole.
Izuku began to pull on his fishing pole while trying to turn it back, whatever it was pulling on this line was big and putting up a fight. As he pulled and struggled with it, Mezo was worried something might happen, and his fears were confirmed when the line snapped and the pole came back and wacked Izuku between the eyes, knocking him backwards.
Izuku landed on his butt and dropped the pole, rubbing at his face. "Owwie!" He cried out, sniffling slightly. "I-I'm really bad at fishing…"
Both sat there for a moment before a chuckle escaped Mezo's lips, soon both beginning to laugh. It seemed like a funny enough end to their adventure together this summer.
