Starting this story off with a prologue! Hence why it's being posted before KaiShinShi week lol. My story idea got too big so I included a prologue and an epilogue.

One of the first things that Shinichi noticed was that this Kid heist was much more crowded than normal.

"Are Kid heists usually this packed?" Shiho, who stood at his side, asked him.

Shinichi shook his head. "No, not really," he said. There were more guards than normal, as well as people he knew by name: Ran, Sonoko, Heiji, Kazuha, Jirokichi, Nakamori, Saguru, and a girl who he believed was Nakamori's daughter, Aoko.

The heist was taking place in Osaka. This time, Kaitou Kid was after a jewel known as the Gem of Ever-Changing Stories. The origin of the gem dated back to centuries ago, possibly even longer. However, much about it was unknown. Where had its name come from, for instance?

It was a mystery that Shinichi was interested in solving, but certainly not his priority. He would stop crime first, then solve this mystery later if he had free time.

"Speaking of crowds," Shinichi said, "why are you even here?"

Shiho shot him a glare. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"You're not a detective, you're just a scientist," Shinichi responded.

"There are a lot of people here who aren't detectives," Shiho said, her eyes trailing over Ran, Sonoko, Kazuha, and Aoko. "Why are they here?"

"Sonoko is here because of her uncle," Shinichi said, then thought, And her obsession with Kid. "Ran is here to be with Sonoko - and me, I guess. Kazuha is here to be with Heiji, and Nakamori-san… I guess she's here to be with her father. I'm not too sure, I don't really know her."

Shiho snorted. "Well then, great detective," she said. "No need to drive me away. At least as a scientist, I'll be of more use than some of the others here."

Shinichi glared at her, but before he could respond, Nakamori started counting down.

The moment he reached zero, a blackout occurred.

"Kid," Shinichi muttered, hoping that Shiho was still at his side.

On the podium containing the gem, Kid appeared, a light shining down on him. With a snap of his fingers, the Gem of Ever-Changing Stories appeared in his hand.

"Give that back, Kid!" Nakamori yelled.

Kid grinned. "Why should I?" he immediately disappeared with a puff of smoke.

Shinichi noticed a figure wearing a black cloak running toward one of the doors, and started chasing it, Shiho at his side.

The game of cat and mouse had begun.

Kaito let out a breath as he finally reached the rooftop. Taking the Gem of Ever-Changing Stories out of his pocket, he held it up and inspected it in the moonlight.

To his disappointment, nothing.

With a name like that, you'd expect there to be some secret, Kaito thought irritably. He was about to put the gem back in his pocket when he heard a shout from behind him.

"Kaitou Kid!"

A grin appeared on Kaito's face. He couldn't stop himself. Turning around, he saw Kudo Shinichi. He felt a faint annoyance upon spotting Miyano Shiho behind Shinichi, but oh well. Nothing he could do to drive her away.

"Tantei-kun!" Kaito called out joyfully. "You here to stop me again?"

"Yes," Shinichi said, walking toward him and holding out his hand. "Give me the gem."

Kaito thought about it for a moment, then said, "No."

"You checked it already, didn't you?" Shinichi snapped. "Give it to me."

Yes, perhaps if this was a normal gem, Kaito would have given it to him. But it had such a peculiar name that Kaito had to learn more about it. He'd do some research and return the gem afterward. So he shook his head. "No."

Suddenly, Shinichi lunged at him. Kaito gaped, shocked, as he was tackled and pinned onto the ground, and Shinichi got his hands on the gem. Trying to take it back, he gasped out, "My, tantei-kun! You've gotten bold!"

Shinichi didn't entertain him with a response. Finally securing his hold on the gem, he shouted "Miyano!" and tossed it to her.

Shiho caught it. Finally throwing off Shinichi, Kaito lunged at her and tackled her as well before she could escape. The Gem of Ever-Changing Stories slipped from her hand and hit the ground.

Then it shattered into eight pieces.

Kaito had already been in the process of leaning down to grab the gem, but now, he only got one of the pieces.

That's not supposed to happen, he thought, dazed, staring at the fragments of the gem.

That was the last thing he thought before a blinding light engulfed him.
