Shizuka tried to balance the box on one hand as she freed up the other in order to knock on the door. She kept on reminding herself how deep in trouble she was for showing up way past their agreed time. But then, she remembered the ring hanging around her neck. She wasn't sure if the dynamics of their relationship had changed now that they were bound to each other. Otherwise, this would be their first argument as a married couple. She took a deep breath, raised her fist to knock but before it could even land on the wood, the door swung open and a grumpy Hachiman appeared.
"You're late."
He took the box from her and sighed. He was expecting her to arrive over one hour ago. He was about to scold her for making him wait that long but then Shizuka planted a soft kiss on his cheek.
"Good morning to you, too, dear husband!" She greeted him exuberantly. She gave him a guilty smile hoping it would help dissipate his worry and annoyance.
The boy pursed his lips while he eyed her from head to foot. She was still wearing her work clothes even though it was supposed to be her day off, no, their day off. He thought something had happened to her on the way here, but it looked like she was just held up by work again. He pouted one last time before finally letting her in.
"Come." He led her to the dining room where he had spent the entire morning preparing for her arrival. He had to take naps in between the cooking and waiting since he was exhausted from last night's activities. To add to his discomfort, his stomach was already growling from hunger. Yet he did not consume a single bite of food because he wanted to share the morning meal with her.
"You made breakfast?" Shizuka's eyes sparkled with delight the instant she saw food on the table.
"Why does that surprise you?" Hachiman dumped the box on the chair next to his.
"Of course I will make breakfast for my wife who couldn't even remember to feed her dumbass. Now the food is cold and I'm starving."
"Well, let's eat then!" Shizuka sat down and started filling up their plates. She handed one to him before digging into her own. She never got the chance to grab something to eat prior to coming over, so she was really famished.
"Wow, Hachiman, your cooking's amazing!"
"So it is." He smirked, proudly.
Shizuka proceeded to explain her tardiness. "Sorry for being late. I had to give a few reminders to the students, and a Haruno came over to visit afterwork. She gave us a wedding gift, by the way. It's in that box."
Hachiman pushed aside the now empty plates before him and settled the box on the table. He opened the lid and took out a bottle of wine.
"That's...so thoughtful." The boy uttered without any enthusiasm.
He stood up to store it in one of the shelves then returned to his seat to open a smaller box which held a porcelain tea set for two, and a bag of expensive coffee grains.
Hachiman took out the last gift from the box. It was a transparent envelope which contained a pair of shiny handcuffs. It also came with a written note that said:
"Use this on Hachiman, Shizuka-chan! Congratulations! -Haruno"
Tch. That weirdo and her kinks.
He wasn't the least bit flabbergasted. Haruno's ability to procure stuff was undeniable and sometimes came in handy. She looked ridiculous during the wedding. Thanks to Haruno though, they were able to submit their marriage documents under the radar because the guy at the civil registry was an acquaintance of hers.
"What did Haruno get for us?"
"Nothing weird." He immediately put the handcuffs back to the envelope and hid it in one of the drawers.
