Chapter 12: Aftermath of the Battle and a Decision
Hours later, after the battle of Geonosis, the remaining members of the Jedi strike team were on board the Republic cruisers they used to arrive and were traveling through hyperspace on their way back to Coruscant. In one of the medical rooms, Padmé and Darra were having their bacta bandages removed by Healer Bant. "You were very brave out there," said Darra as the Healer removed Padmé's last bandage. "I'll be honest in saying that I was surprised to see how well you handled yourself out in the arena. . .as well as your sudden ability to use the Force. Forgive me for saying this, but I didn't think you were Force-sensitive."
A small laugh escaped Padmé's mouth. "Thank you," she said to the Healer, who nodded before leaving the two. Padmé smiled as she looked at Darra, "I am no stranger to being involved in dangerous situations and have been in plenty of firefights. As for using Force. I only recently discovered that I was Force-sensitive."
"You mean while you were on Naboo. You seem strangely proficient in it," Darra had an inquisitive look.
"It's a long story, but thanks to Anakin's training, I've gotten a good grasp of it." Darra could hear the worried tone in her voice. She wanted to inquire about how Anakin was doing. Jedi code or not, she believed that a Jedi, especially Anakin, deserved to be with the woman he clearly loved. It's quite clear that the Senator loved him in return.
"No need to worry about Anakin. He's as tough and stubborn as they come. Truthfully, I have never met a person more stubborn, determined, or resilient than him. He'll be up and about soon." She watched Padmé breathe a sigh of relief. "You truly care for him, don't you?"
"I do," Padmé said in a firm, unwavering voice.
Darra smiled. "If it's any consolation, then I believe you're a good fit for him," she calmly said. "I've reviewed your file and know for a fact that you are not like most of the other politicians in the Senate, who are corrupt." The smile on her face vanished a bit, "however, despite what I think. The Council will likely not share the same opinion."
"I know," Padmé's eyes fell to her lap. This was a conversation she and Anakin had several times while at the lake country. How the Jedi Council allowed their members to form a relationship with their birth family and not have a romantic relationship was beyond her. Lifting her head so her brown orbs could meet Darra's rust-colored ones, "but I do not care. I love Anakin for who he is. The Jedi Council may not allow romantic relationships, but that will never change how I feel about him."
"You have a lot of spirit," Darra praised. "And I know Anakin feels the same about you. Anakin is a brave and stubborn person. He's grown up a lot. Personally, I am glad that he has matured. In more ways than one, and no longer holds the Chancellor in such high regard. Some in the Order consider him to be a maverick. But you? You are perhaps just as if not more stubborn than him." A light chuckle escaped her lips. "A testament to those two qualities would be when he stopped Olin from trying to fix Tru's lightsaber during a mission to capture Granta Omega and Jenna Arbor and when he took a blaster bolt to save my life. Where if he didn't, then I would be dead right now."
That was news to Padmé as Anakin never said anything about their mission to Korriban or why he no longer seems to trust Chancellor Palpatine. Seeing the look of confusion on her face, Darra spoke. "Anakin has never said anything about our mission to Korriban or why he distrusts Palpatine, has he?"
"No, he hasn't," Padmé shook her head. In truth, she was curious about the latter, for she to had grown wary of the man who served as one of her oldest advisors and Senator when she was Queen. Ever since the Separatist movement began and the Military Creation Act was first announced, he has been brushing her off.
This time, it was Darra's turn to release a breath. "It is not my place to say what happened between him and the Chancellor. But his involvement in Anakin's life had started to cause problems. The rest you will have to discuss with him."
The two sat in silence for a few minutes before Darra stood up. "Are you ready to go check on him?" Padmé nodded, and the two left.
In another med-room, Obi-Wan was sitting in one of the chairs speaking with Master Windu and Master Yoda while Anakin was lying in bed, still unconscious. Despite needing a crutch to help move around, thanks to the laceration he received on his left leg from Dooku, Obi-Wan explained what happened in the hangar. ". . . Anakin not only held his own against Dooku but also managed to wound him in the left shoulder. But despite his impressive bravery and skills, Dooku gave him a cut near his right eye and knocked him out with a powerful barrage of Force lightning. We are just fortunate that Master Yoda was able to arrive in time."
Mace turned his gaze away from his fellow Jedi. He looked at Anakin with great pride in his eyes. Yet, there was a question running through his mind. "While I am proud and commend his skills. I would like to know why Anakin was on Geonosis when I ordered him to remain on Naboo?"
"That would be my doing, Master Windu," Senator Amidala entered the room with Padawan Thel-Tanis. "Your orders were for Anakin to protect me at all costs, but I was unwilling to leave Master Kenobi on Geonosis. Nor did I give Anakin much of a choice in the matter. His options were to either stay on Naboo while I went to help Obi-Wan or accompany me. The Council might be able to give him orders because he is a member of the Order. But I am a Senator; therefore, that put me outside the orders you gave."
That left everyone at a loss for words. Darra was impressed with how gutsy the Naboo Senator was and how she spoke to Master Windu. She'd never known anyone to do that before. The frown on Master Windu's face was visible; clearly, he disapproved of the Senator's choice regarding the situation, though he accepted it nonetheless. She was right, as Anakin did not have the authority to prevent her from leaving her home planet.
Clearing her throat, she bowed at three Jedi and excused herself. But not before giving Amidala a ghost smile. The four turned their attention to Anakin when they heard him groan. "Kriffing Sith," opening his eyes to see the other occupants in the room.
"Language," Mace scolded. "Just because you were injured does not mean I won't kick your butt."
"I feel like I got hit by a gundark. . ." he was soon wrapped in a tight hug. There was no question of who it was. "Hello, Angel. There's no need to worry. I'm all right," he said after feeling a teardrop fall on his face.
"I am just thankful you're okay," she said, pulling back and gently touching the scar by his right eye. "Dooku?"
"Yeah. Is it bad?"
"Not at all. If anything, it makes you look more handsome," Padmé replied, surprising the other three other Jedi in the room. No one was more surprised than Master Windu, who cleared his throat. Padmé stepped aside as Anakin took a breath.
The expression on Mace's was one Anakin had become very familiar with. "Something you wish to tell me?" The calm inquiry would have fooled most, but Anakin knew it was a silent order.
"Can wait until later. A more immediate discussion is needed," Yoda said, cutting across and bringing the attention to him. The expression on his face didn't betray the tone of sadness in his voice.
"It has to do with the battle on Geonosis, doesn't it," it was hardly a question, for Anakin's voice was hollow and filled with dread. He could sense Padmé's uneasiness as she held onto his hand. The young Naboo Senator squeezed his hand, trying to calm her emotions. "You spoke with the Chancellor."
"We did, and the news is not good," Mace sighed. He remembered what Anakin said about his conversation with the Chancellor before leaving for Naboo.
"Hard to hear, this will be, for all of you," Yoda said, looking particularly at Padmé, who felt really uncomfortable at what they were about to say. She had a strong feeling she knew what it would be about.
Mace continued. "I'm afraid that the battle at Geonosis has escalated the conflict with the Separatists. They have declared war on the Republic, and battles are breaking out across the galaxy. In your absence, Senator. Representative Binks put forth a motion to give Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers. It is our belief that your naïve employee was coaxed into it, believing it would solve the dire situation the Senate faced with the Separatists. To our great regret, the motion has passed. The Republic is deploying its Clone troopers to various parts of the galaxy to fight against the Separatists. The Chancellor has charged the command of the Clone troopers to the Jedi. The Clones will be leaving in five days. . .and will have to have Jedi Commanders appointed to them by then," Mace said sadly.
"Deeply troubling this war is. Jedi we are, soldiers we are not," Yoda added in an equally regretful voice.
"We are deeply sorry, Milady, but there is no way we can exempt any Jedi from duty. Anakin will be going as Obi-Wan's second in command with the military rank of Commander. Obi-Wan, you will be commanding your own battalion as General, as will most of the other Masters and Knights. For now, we are keeping the younger Padawans out of this. Senior Padawans, however, will be going as well," Mace said.
"Five days?" Padmé asked in a barely audible voice.
"Deeply sorry we are, Milady. Want this, we do not. A choice we do not have," Yoda's sadness about the situation was expressed when his long ears bent.
Anakin squeezed her hand tightly as they let the implications sink in. The two shared a similar look and, through their bond, could feel how each other felt about the situation they and the Republic were now in. Being involved in a war was something they had hoped they could avoid. But that hope has apparently been squashed as the Republic will now officially be at war with the Separatists. This was not good at all. What's worse is that the Jedi. The keepers of the peace were now being forced to participate in a war and lead the Republic's newly created Clone troopers against the Separatists' droid armies. They were going off to fight a war they didn't want to be involved in. A war that could essentially end the lives of thousands, if not millions of lives, and they wouldn't know if they'd return.
"The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Begun the Clone War has," Yoda said in despair.
"This is something we'd hoped to avoid. . .but now it seems we have no choice," Anakin said gravely. "Is there at least any good news?"
Obi-Wan replied. "Only that Senator Amidala is no longer in any imminent danger. The bounty hunter Jango Fett and the Viceroy of the Trade Federation, Nute Gunray, are now dead." His gaze then fell on Padmé. "With them gone, the threat to your life has greatly diminished."
"That's something. I remember trying to take down one of the Geonosian warriors but only took off one of its wings. The other laser bolts hit Gunray, and he fell off the balcony dead," Padmé explained.
"That removes one problem we have to deal with," Mace thoughtfully said, tracing a finger on his chin. "Though I would have preferred that if we had managed to capture Nute Gunray, we could have learned more. According to what we knew from Padawan Skywalker and Knight Kenobi, it was clear that Nute Gunray was one of the individuals who sponsored your assassination attempts."
"Now we come to some other business. One that surrounds the two of you," Mace looked at the two with critical eyes. Particularly at Anakin, who met his gaze. "You are aware that as Jedi, we cannot have attachments except for with our birth families. Why would you forge a romantic relationship with someone?" Despite his displeased tone, Mace was secretly happy that Anakin found someone to make him happy. He at least wanted to hear his reasons.
"It wasn't like I planned for it to happen. However, when I was on Naboo, I learned a few things," Anakin began. Banishing any sense of hesitation or regret from his voice and mind. "One that Padmé is without a doubt Force-sensitive. Two, that we forged a Force bond and that I believe it is the will of the Force that we are together." He gently squeezed her hand to let her know he had no regrets.
The two stayed silent for a few minutes to let the information sink in. Then Padmé reached out with the Force and lifted the cantina of water on the table into the air. "Hmm," everyone looked at Master Yoda. ". . .long suspected of your connection to the Force I did. A strong connection you two share and have been brought together the Force has. Have not felt something like this in my over eight hundred years of life. Separate them; we cannot and should not."
Mace and Obi-Wan stared at him with perplexed expressions. "Master Yoda, are you sure about this?"
"The Force works in mysterious ways it does," Yoda replied, looking at Mace. "Much to discuss this with the Council; we do."
"There is another matter that we should discuss," Anakin gave a pointed look at Obi-Wan. We should inform them about what Dooku said about Darth Sidious controlling the Senate. It may not feel right, but we cannot just dismiss his claim.
Agreed, Obi-Wan said through their bond. He turned his head slightly to Padmé. "Can you please step outside, Senator? We have some Jedi matters to discuss."
Anakin gave Padmé a nod, and she let go of his hand to step outside. Once she was out of the room, Anakin and Obi-Wan spent the next half-hour informing Masters Yoda and Windu about what Dooku said regarding hundreds of Republic Senators being under the control of Darth Sidious.
"Do you believe what Dooku said. . .about Sidious controlling the Senate?" Obi-Wan paused for a second to let the information sink in. He himself was unsure about what Dooku said. "It doesn't feel right."
"Joined the dark side Dooku has," Yoda said, deep in thought yet in a grave voice. "Mmm. Lies, deceit, creating mistrust are his ways now," the diminutive Jedi Master said to Obi-Wan.
Mace then picked up by adding. "Nevertheless, I feel we should keep a closer eye on the Senate."
"I agree," Yoda nodded his head.
Windu's gaze fell on Anakin, who stood there subdued. He then took a breath. "Master Yoda, Master Kenobi. Will the two of you leave Anakin and I alone for a while? There is something he and I need to discuss." Anakin could hear the firmness in his voice and braced himself for the scolding he was about to receive.
The two agreed and exited the room. Obi-Wan gave Anakin a hopeful smile. Good luck.
Mace gestured for Anakin to sit on the bed, and just as the Padawan predicted, his Master began scolding him for forming a relationship with the Senator. This continued for an hour until Mace sighed and revealed that he was happy Anakin found a reason to mature further and be more responsible.

Coming out of hyperspace, Dooku's solar sailor descended into the atmosphere of Coruscant. The ship flew to The Works of the Industrial sector of Coruscant to an incomplete, abandoned building where it landed inside the hangar bay. His personal droid deactivated the ship's engines and lowered the ramp so Count Dooku could stroll down it, where he spotted a person hiding in the shadows waiting for him. He moved before the shadowy figure and bowed reverently.
"The Force is with us, Master Sidious," Dooku spoke.
"Welcome home, Lord Tyranus," the Sith Lord replied, emerging from the shadows. "You have done well."
The two then began walking with Dooku two steps behind his Master. "I bring you good news, my lord. The war has begun."
"Excellent," Sidious said, his gravelly voice hinting at a hiss. The Dark Lord's smile widened from underneath the dark shadows of his huge cowl. "Everything is going as planned."
"What caused your wound?" The Dark Lord inquired without even turning around.
Dooku hesitated for a moment but spoke, nonetheless. "It would appear that Master Windu's Padawan Anakin Skywalker is more powerful than previously assumed. He defeated Ferus Olin in battle."
"It is of no consequence as Olin was merely a tool to help begin the war," Sidious uncaringly said.
Roughly three hours later, the Republic cruisers returned to Coruscant with the remaining Jedi, a squad of clone troopers, and the Senator of Naboo. Padmé was greeted by Captain Typho, Representative Bink, and Dormé. The minute her handmaiden saw Anakin and her standing so close together, holding hands, her eyes twinkled, and her lips curled into a mischievous smile. As much as Anakin wanted to accompany them to the Senate building to speak with the Chancellor, he had to return to the Jedi Temple. The Naboo Senator and her entourage boarded a shuttle and rode it toward the Senate building. Already, she was dreading the approaching meeting with Chancellor Palpatine.
True to her prediction, the meeting went south, with the Chancellor stating that the Senate had already voted in favor of the Military Creation Act and the Republic was now officially at war with the Separatists. Nothing could change that. The meeting lasted until late at night, with a very displeased Padmé leaving with her handmaiden, the two droids who accompanied her, and Captain Typho. Returning to her apartment, she sent the Captain on his way while Threepio went to prepare dinner, and she and Dormé sat on one of the sofas. Padmé gently massaged her temples while she and Dormé sat in silence.
"We did what we could, Milady. But in the end, the Separatists got what they wanted. . ." Dormé broke the silence.
"A war," said a disappointed Padmé. "And it doesn't make things any easier."
Dormé made the decision to lighten the mood by bringing up a new topic. "Aside from the Republic Senate's decision. How was your time on Naboo with your Jedi bodyguard? Did he perform to your satisfaction?" A mischievous smile threatened to cross her lips.
"It was amazing. Make it the best time of my life! And to your question, you little minx," Padmé gave her a pointed look with a large smile across her face. "Mere words could never describe how great he made me feel. And the heat from the planet he came from. . .let's just say that its two suns would pale in comparison. It was absolutely amazing."
"Ooh, stroke his ego, why don't you. I knew you two would get together," Dormé cheered. Her smile soon faded when Padmé raised a hand and spoke over her.
Padmé's tone then changed into one of uncertainty with a bit of sadness. "That said, it is still not acceptable for a Jedi to have romantic attachments, and the Council might force him to choose between changing their code to allow romantic attachments, expelling him from the Order, or making him choose between staying as a Jedi or be with me," she solemnly explained. "While I would like nothing more than to be with him forever, I do not want him to give up on being a Jedi."
"Let's not worry about that tonight," a familiar voice entered the apartment. The two stood up to see Anakin standing near the entrance with an easy grin. "Hello, Angel. Guess who's here. . ."
Anakin did not get to finish as Padmé ran over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck, and kissed him hard. He responded by wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her back. The two then pulled back. "That's a good way to say hello." Anakin looked into her brown orbs with an easy grin.
"What are you doing here? I thought you had to be at the Temple," Padmé wondered, though she did not much care at the moment since he was here.
"Master Windu said I could stay elsewhere outside of the barracks for the night," Anakin replied.
"Mmm," the two turned to a smiling Dormé. "I can see that my presence will no longer be required. Seems like you two would like some privacy. Goodnight, Milady," she gave her and Anakin a gentle nod before leaving.
"Goodnight, Dormé," Padmé said as she watched her handmaiden leave her apartment. The two then went to sit on one of the sofas. "So, how was the meeting with the Council?"
"Went as well as expected," Anakin began. "A few members were generally opposed to the idea of romantic attachment. However, the others were willing to consider it after Master Yoda spoke. Another thing that came up was your midi-chlorian count." He sensed her unease about that and went to elaborate. "All I said was that you could use the Force and that anything else regarding the topic was not my place to say. They wish to speak with us before you return to Naboo, and I am sent to the front lines."
"I appreciate you speaking on my behalf, but I can handle myself," giving him a stern look to which he chuckled.
"I know you can. I'm merely looking out for you," Anakin replied.
In response, she loosened her expression and kissed him on the cheek. So you can really stay for the night?
Yes. However, I will have to be at the Temple by eleven a.m. tomorrow.
Then we might as well enjoy the time we have. 3PO is making dinner.
Just as she said that the golden protocol droid entered the room. "Oh, Master Anakin I was unaware you were coming tonight," he sounded surprised. "Mistress Padmé has requested that I prepare dinner for the night. Will you be joining her?"
"Yes, 3PO. Padmé and I can take care of the rest. Why don't you power down for the night," Anakin said.
"Of course, Master Ani," 3Po replied before standing beside the wall and shutting off, leaving the two humans alone. Anakin and Padmé entered the dining room, where they ate the food Threepio prepared for them.
"I know I said this before, but 3PO is a great cook," Padmé cut a piece of her chicken and put it in her mouth.
"That he is," agreeing with her as he ate his vegetables. "Something on your mind," he inquired, as he could tell something was vexing her through their bond.
Padmé put her fork down, taking a deep breath. "When we were onboard the cruiser, Darra and I discussed a few things. Particularly about you and the Chancellor and what happened between you and Ferus Olin while you were on Korriban." She noticed the frown on his face yet pressed on. "She didn't say much about either of them as it was not her place, but they piqued my interest."
"She's right about that," Anakin commented. He knew that his friend was only looking after him. It was true that, at one point, he thought of the Chancellor as a friend and mentor, but that soon started to change. The mission to capture Omega on Korriban would have been a costly one, and admittedly, he was a little jealous and, albeit angry about the Council's decision to speed up the trials for chosen Padawans, he got over it after speaking with Obi-Wan and Mace. Weighing his options, he took in a sharp breath. "What do you want to know?"
"I want to know what happened between you and the Chancellor. Obviously, something drastic happened because you become cold and distant whenever he is brought into a conversation," Padmé began. "And about what happened between you and Olin, as I could see and feel his anger and hatred towards you. What happened on Korriban?" Anakin figured she at least deserved the right to know about those instances and decided to tell her everything.
"The relationship between Ferus and I was not a pleasant one. He and I were rivals and did not like each other. . ." he began telling her everything that had occurred between him and his former rival. From his early days in the Temple to now, sometimes, he wished things could have been different. He and Olin would never see eye to eye or be bosom friends. "It didn't help that he was an overall jerk who liked to play the perfect Padawan. The tension between us continued to escalate when the Council decided to speed up the trials of chosen Padawans. I will admit that I was a little angry and jealous that he was picked, but I got over it after speaking with Father and Obi-Wan. When we arrived on Korriban with Darra, Tru, and our Masters, the dark energy of the planet started to enhance our negative traits and fuel our dislikes for one another. And it wasn't just as Darra and Tru were also being affected. From that point, we started taking jabs at each other, and the three of us were able to get control over ourselves and release our animosity into the Force. Olin seemed to take it in. He became so hellbent on capturing Omega and Arbor that he forgot he was part of a team."
"His anger toward me only intensified when I stopped him from trying to fix Tru's lightsaber. Tru was slightly hurt and resentful when I voiced my opinion for him to remain behind while we traveled to Korriban."
"Why?" She asked.
"Tru's lightsaber has been known to malfunction and need constant maintenance. It was not like I didn't believe in him or trust in his abilities, but things could have ended badly with his lightsaber malfunctioning. He or any of us could've been killed on the mission," he answered and added. "During a brief rest period after fighting a swarm of droids, I went to see how Tru was doing and overheard a conversation he was having with Ferus. I intervened and stopped Ferus from doing any further maintenance on Tru's lightsaber as it had slipped into half-powered mode, and he'd been injured. There, I explained to Tru why I didn't think it would be wise for him to accompany us, and at that moment, Darra and our masters entered the room. Ferus claimed that I was only trying to play the hero and only thinking about myself but. . ."
"You were only trying to protect them," Padmé finished, understanding where he was going with this story.
"Unfortunately, he did not see it that way. As we engaged in the last part of the mission, Omega hid in the shadows near the tomb and was prepared to fire at Darra while her back was turned. I jumped in to protect her and wound up getting shot in the process. After I managed to disarm and knock Omega back, Ferus attempted to strike him down, and he would have ended up dead had I not intervened. We later returned to Coruscant with him in binders, and Ferus and Tru were both put on inactive duty. Though Ferus received a few additional months of suspension. The Council had reconvened and decided to rescind their decision to speed up the trials to Knighthood. However, here is where things get really interesting. . . A few days after returning, Ferus resigned from the Order and turned to the dark side. Before Omega's trial before the full Senate, Ferus broke into the prison holding him and killed the guards and Omega. Master Tachi was heartbroken, as you can imagine. Despite his flaws and shortcomings, she loved like a son."
"As for my relationship with the Chancellor. I think it will be better if I show rather than tell. . ." From there, he showed her the memories of him and the Chancellor. How he would listen to the man's advice and how it was slowly changing him. He refused to withhold any information from her as she deserved to know the full truth.
Her breath hitched in her throat as she understood. She didn't say anything for a couple of minutes, trying to digest the information. "That's a lot to take in. I can see why you do not trust him and how his insistence on being involved in your life affected you. Yet that concerns me a little, as he wants you to align with him."
"Same, and I don't let my guard down around him. I only regret not realizing it sooner."
Padmé walked around the table to stand behind him and wrap her arms around his chest. "I promise to always be there to help and protect you should you need me."
"And I promise you, my Angel. I will do everything in my power to return to you," he said, rising from his seat and then turning around. In a swift motion, he captured her lips with his and picked her up bridal style, carrying her to her bedroom.
"Make love to me, please. . ." Padmé requested.
The lights soon turned off, and Anakin acknowledged her request. Together, the two spent most of the night showing each other how much they meant to one another.

The next morning, Padmé woke up, spooned against Anakin's strong chest with his arms wrapped around her. She felt completely safe with his strong arms around her. Padmé could tell he was about to wake up with how his left hand trailed up her body.
"Morning, Angel," Anakin's cobalt eyes opened, and she was greeted by the sight of her chocolate locks.
Shifting herself around to face him. "Good morning, my handsome Jedi." He gave her a quick kiss. "Did you sleep well?"
"Always when you are beside me." Anakin kissed her again, yet it was more passionate and loving this time, which she gratefully returned. The two then separated, and Padmé rested her head on top of his chest. He let out a small sigh. "I wish we could stay like this the rest of the day, but. . ."
"I know," she finished thinking the same. "Much as I do not want to, the Senate will be in session most of the day. I also have no desire to deal with the Senators who have been pushing for this war since the beginning. Let alone have to deal with the Senator from the Trade Federation." Disdain dripped down her voice as she thought about the Neimoidian Senator. Lott Dod had been a long-time and good ally of Nute Gunray, and she did not trust him as far as she could throw him. Neimoidians were a cowardly and slippery lot, and Dod was no different. "Similar to Gunray, Dod is a coward with powerful allies. He's a person who would never personally get his hands dirty unless he was sure he was protected. But unlike him, he is a lot more cunning, power-hungry, and ruthless to the point of being narrow-mindedly obsessive about achieving his goals."
"Well, he and his other allies better hope they do not run into me on the battlefield or catch them doing something illegal, as I will enjoy putting them in prison," he replied with determination in his eyes and voice.
"And I will happily testify against them," she said, matching his determination. "But enough about that for now. I need something to help me relax before attending the Senate meeting. Care to join me in the shower?" Flashing him a sultry smile while getting out of bed and swaying her hips as she walked into the fresher.
"Of course, Milady," Anakin followed her inside.
At around 10:15 that day, Anakin had hopped out from his speeder, traveled to the Temple, and went to one of the sparring rooms. Unsurprisingly, Darra was sitting on a bench with Master Soara standing above her. "Morning, Skywalker," Soara greeted without taking her eyes off of Darra. "Glad to see you are on time."
"Before arriving on Coruscant, you said to meet in the training room by eleven a.m.," Anakin replied. This time, she did turn to look at him.
"That I did. We will begin in twenty minutes." She made to turn around though stopped herself. "There's something on your mind, young Skywalker?"
"The Republic is now officially at war with the Separatists, and we are to be drafted as military Commanders and Generals," he began. Darra hiked an eyebrow at him, wondering what he was getting at. "This is not right, as we are peacekeepers, not soldiers."
Soara sucked in a breath, understanding his reservations about the Republic and, by extension, the Order being involved in the war. It was something she and a handful of others felt uneasy about. "I do understand. No one wants this. However, the situation is out of our hands now, and we have little choice in the matter." The door slid open, and a panting Tru entered the room.
"I was beginning to wonder if you had forgotten about our rendezvous today," she said as the Padawans sat on the bench, though Tru seemed slightly embarrassed. "We will leave soon," she said, leaving the room.
"This is really happening, huh? We are actually going to take part in a war?" Tru wound one flexible arm around his back to hug his opposite elbow, something his two friends knew very well. It was something Tru did when he was especially nervous.
"Believe me. None of us are happy about this, but we have no choice," said Darra, understanding her friend was nervous about it. "As keepers of the peace, it's our job to keep the peace."
"And no doubt be forced to make difficult choices. Sometimes impossible ones," Anakin added. "Now that the Separatists—the Sith—have gotten what they wanted, we have to be more cautious and ready. Now more than ever."
"Agreed. So new topic now. . ." Shooting Anakin a mischievous smile. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes after seeing the familiar twinkle in her rust-colored orbs. "Where were you last night? I always enjoy a good conversation with the two of you before heading to bed."
He knew she already had an inkling as to where he was last night and was only asking for the fun of it. Predictably, she continued. "Wait, don't tell me. You were with a person who had chocolate locks, brown eyes, and is a Senator who fought alongside on Geonosis."
"Why do you even bother asking when you already knew the answer," Anakin quipped. Darra and Tru started laughing. Darra, the more mature of the trio, stopped to speak.
"Jokes aside though. . . I honestly approve of her. I really mean that," she held up a hand when he gave her a curious look. "Don't look so surprised as I never agreed with the Council's ruling about forbidding attachments at first and then allowing children access to their birth family. Honestly, I've been silently hoping that you and her would get together. Have been since you were given the assignment to protect her on Naboo. But that's just me. I don't know what the Council will be of the same mindset."
"That said, I want you to know that I support you and your relationship with Senator Amidala."
"Same with me," Tru agreed with her. By that moment, Soara had returned and beckoned the three to follow her. "We can talk about the rest of this later. Right now, I get a feeling we're going to be worked to death today."
True to what he thought, Master Soara had them get into a speeder and fly to a familiar destination. One that they knew all too well. By the end of the day, the three Padawans were so exhausted that their legs felt like they were made of jelly. Their tunics were torn in places, and they were sweating profusely. Out of the three, Anakin had more stamina, having been trained by both Master Windu and Master Kenobi, and was able to last longer. "Have to admit the three of you work well together," they all turned to see the revered Jedi Master standing a few feet away from them. She slowly walked towards them. "Even when separated, you three are exceptional in your own ways. That's enough for the day. Go grab something to eat and a shower. Except you, Anakin. I like a word with you."
Tru shot him a look that said good luck. To his own curiosity, he also wondered what she was going to say. Soara then began by placing a hand on his shoulder. "I can tell that you still have reservations about being involved in this war. Not that I blame you, of course. But the reality of the matter is that we now have to be a part of it. The Council commed me, requesting your presence in the Council Chamber as soon you return to the Temple."
"Thank you for telling me, Master Antanna," Anakin bowed to her, and she removed her hand. They walked back to the speeder where the others were waiting.
The trip back was a silent affair, and while Soara, Darra, and Tru headed to the cafeteria, Anakin went to the turbolift.

In the Council Chambers, Senator Padmé Amidala stood in the center with all twelve members present and Obi-Wan standing a couple steps behind her. Today had been exhausting for Padmé as she spent most of it in the Senate with the other Senators and delegates debating how to proceed now that they were at war with the Separatists. The Senator from the Trade Federation tried to have her arrested for her part in killing their Viceroy. Yet that ended in failure when Padmé explained that it was Gunray who ordered the assassination attempts on her. As soon as that came to light, all hell broke loose amongst the Senators, who promptly demanded answers. Master Gallia was more than happy to provide assistance by playing back the transmission Obi-Wan sent to the Jedi Council. That and Padmé gave her own testimony about what happened during her 'trial' if one could call it that. Gunray practically admitted to having ordered the attack on her.
But like the slippery coward he was, Lott Dod managed to weasel his way out by explaining how neither he nor the other members of the Trade Federation's leadership were aware of Gunray's involvement. Padmé and the people who knew her best regarded the Neimoidian with looks of disdain. After the Senate meeting, when she was in her office with Bail Organa of Alderaan, Onaconda Farr and his aide Lolo Purs of Rodia, Mon Mothma of Chandrila, and her aide Teckla for a discussion about what occurred. It wasn't even five minutes until Master Gallia arrived with news about how the Jedi Council wanted to speak with her. Yet, Padmé already knew why the members of the Jedi Council wanted to see her.
That is how she ended up spending the next half-hour or so in the Council Chamber. In the back of her mind, she wondered if this was how Anakin sometimes felt whenever he had to be in their presence. Always like you are being judged, slightly concerned, and having your life intruded upon.
"Upon sleeping about the matter, I may want to reassess my previous decision. . ." said Master Piell. Initially, he was against the idea of young Skywalker having a relationship with the Senator. Moreover, I was baffled to learn that the same Senator was a Force wielder. But after sleeping on it, a possible outcome could arise. "If what Master Yoda says about you forming a Force bond with young Skywalker, then it might be a blessing in disguise. Especially since this attachment has sparked yet another new positive growth within him."
Next came Mundi. "Understand, Senator, that not all of us agree about your two's attachment. That said, given his level of maturity, skills, commitment to the Order, and his actions these past several months. We believe he is now ready to undertake the trials to Knighthood."
"Hmm, ready he is. The will of the Force it is that you two are together. Separate the two of you; we will not," Yoda surmised, closing his eyes for a minute."
"Thank you, Master Yoda," Padmé gave a respectful bow.
Yoda then peered at Mace, who had his fingers brought together silently sitting in his seat. Like he was waiting for something to happen. A second later, the Chamber door opened, revealing a tired Anakin. Anakin knew his appearance was less than acceptable, but Mace had drilled into him that it was of the utmost importance to be present when summoned by the Council. He barely passed a glance at either Obi-Wan or Padmé, making his way inside. The small smile on Obi-Wan's face was also missed as he walked to the center of the room, standing beside Padmé.
"Padawan Anakin Skywalker," Mace began his tone even. "The Council has had a long discussion about whether or not we should approve of you and Senator Amidala's relationship." Anakin's breath got caught in his throat as he mentally gulped and braced himself for what might come next. "While there are a few who disagree. Given recent events, we have taken into consideration that it would be acceptable for the two of you to be together."
At that moment, Anakin felt like his legs were about to give out and he'd pass out on the floor. He thought he would be expelled or be forced to choose between the Order and Padmé. Thank the Force the Council had decided to allow for both. Mace continued. "Furthermore, we have decided that you are now ready to undertake the trials to Knighthood."
Okay, now, Anakin felt like his knees would give out. He certainly hoped this was not a dream. If it was, then let him never awake. I assure you this is no dream. He heard Obi-Wan say through their bond. Careful not to lose his composure and release his emotions into the Force, he bowed respectfully. "I am honored by this Master. Thank you for allowing these things to happen."
"You will be leaving with Master Kenobi in a few days," Mace stated. "There, he will judge and report if you have passed a trial or not."
"I understand, Master," Anakin replied.
Mace gave a curt nod. "We now come to the next order of business." His gaze soon fell on Padmé, whom he regarded with a calm, stoic expression.
Master Yoda tapped the floor with his wooden cane, bringing the attention to him. "Though hidden from us, your midi-chlorian count was. Strong you are with the Force. Too old you are to begin your Jedi training. But help you control it as a non-Jedi. We will if that is your choice. Force you, we will not."
Padmé felt her mouth go dry. They offered to teach her how to become a Force wielder without becoming a Jedi. She could feel Anakin's warmth through their bond. The choice is yours, Angel. Whatever you decide, I will support you.
She thought this over in her head for several minutes. "I accept and thank you for the offer, Master Yoda," giving her answer and a respectful bow.
"Discuss this further another time we will," the diminutive Master's lips formed a small smile.
With that, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé were dismissed. The three then walked out of the Chamber, ready to get something to eat and retire for the night.
A/N: The Jedi have returned to Coruscant with Anakin gaining permission to stay the night with Padmé. Now that the Republic is at war, the Jedi will now be forced to participate as military leaders. Something they never wanted. As expected, pandemonium broke out at the Senate with the Senators, and delegates hearing about this and Nute Gunray's involvement with the assassination attempts on Padmé.
I firmly believe that Anakin and Padmé should have been together in the Star Wars series, as that would have kept him grounded. Thankfully, the Council has agreed to let them be together now, but more than that, they are letting him take the trials to undergo Knighthood.
Let me state for the record that Padmé will not be a Jedi, nor will she have a lightsaber. Rather, she will just learn to control the Force.
