Hi all,

Here's my new Pokemon story. Hopefully, this goes better than the last one. The MC shares the same name as my old story, but that is the only similarity. Lucas will be a Pokemon Breeder in this story, although there will be plenty of Pokemon battles. This story is darker overall, but not extreme. Uploads will be inconsistent since they are determined by my patrons, and I am juggling several stories.

Patrons get access to advanced chapters for all of my stories. Read my profile for information on how to join if you are interested.

Chapter 1

"...residents in Charlestown and the surrounding area are being advised to remain vigilant. An explosion took place during the early morning hours, resulting in damage to buildings situated several kilometres outside of town. There have been numerous reports of an unidentified object flying in the sky, though these reports have not been substantiated. The military presence in the area has significantly increased in the past few hours, with multiple aircraft sightings suggesting a significant event is taking place. For further information..."

Lucas turned off the radio and glanced up at the sky through the driver's window. It was mid-morning, with clear blue skies stretching as far as the eye could see. There were no clouds, nor any indication of an unidentified object present.

It was likely that the military was conducting flight training in the area, and some people mistook the aircraft for something else. The sightings may have been reported by alien conspiracy theorists residing in the area. It is important to appreciate their imaginative minds, even if they may be poorly misguided. Okay, he could acknowledge that he was a stubborn realist. If he couldn't personally witness or verify something, it simply did not exist in his mind.

Regardless of the situation, he was situated comfortably to the south of Charlestown, so it would have no bearing on him.

His destination was the Meridan hiking trail, a renowned multi-day hike spanning over fifty kilometres known for its awe-inspiring vistas. Despite the less-than-ideal timing due to the approaching winter, he felt compelled to take a few days off to find some peace of mind. He needed to process the difficult weeks that had unfolded following his mother's passing.

It was not unexpected, yet it still left him devastated. She had been hospitalised due to covid complications, which ultimately led to a major heart attack. Lucas was able to gather the immediate family to bid their farewells before she passed away, giving them some closure.

In the week that followed her passing, he found himself busy with organising the funeral, something he didn't prepare ahead of time. His mother had always been a reliable and constant influence in his life, making it challenging for him to envision a future where she was absent.

The funeral was a painful experience, not only because of the grief but also due to the presence of extended family. He and his mother had a strained relationship with them, and it seemed that they attended the funeral out of obligation. Once the funeral ended, their true colours emerged as they began criticising his life choices, particularly his career as a struggling artist. He tolerated their presence as long as he could until his patience ran out and he told them to get lost. The moment they departed, he felt a sense of relief.

Lucas followed the turn-off that led to the trail's starting point and drove the final few kilometres. As he drove into the parking lot, he was taken aback by the absence of other vehicles. Despite the absence of hikers, the lodge remained operational year-round due to its close proximity to other popular tourist destinations. After exiting his car, he walked up to the lodge only to discover that it was locked.

Lucas shrugged and made his way back to the car. It's not like he needed the lodge for anything. As he was about to open the trunk, his attention was caught by the unmistakable roar of a fighter jet. He looked up to see a sleek aircraft speeding by, flying at a low altitude. He watched it until it disappeared from sight.

He lifted the weighty backpack onto his shoulders and checked that his satellite phone was fully charged. The trail was clearly marked and well-maintained, making it easy to navigate. Nevertheless, it never hurts to take precautions. It wasn't his first hiking experience, and he had faced challenges in the past due to the lack of a satellite phone.

After locking his car, he set foot on the trail. The invigorating cold air refreshed him, and he quickened his pace in order to reach the first waypoint before nightfall. Due to his late start today, he was behind schedule. Despite the near-freezing temperature, which made hiking less than ideal, he was dressed in insulating clothing to preserve his body heat.

The initial stretch of the trail took him through a lengthy valley, weaving its way through lightly wooded areas and a succession of meandering rivers. With the trail being entirely level, he made steady progress over the next few hours. The calming sounds of nature embraced him, relieving the stress that had built up in recent weeks. This was precisely why he embarked on hikes—it provided a sense of relaxation like nothing else.

After two hours of hiking, he took a break and sat on a fallen log to quench his thirst with some water. Thus far, the hike had been easy, and he expected the next few hours to be no different. After taking a five-minute break, he continued on his journey. The trail veered in another direction, leading him through a densely forested area.

Another loud roar caught his attention as a second fighter jet soared overhead, but the thick forest canopy obstructed his line of sight. Soon after, a deafening explosion sounded, and Lucas instinctively dove for cover.

What the hell is going on?

There was a secondary explosion that sounded as though something had collided with the ground. Did the fighter jet crash?

Lucas sprinted along the trail until he stumbled upon a clearing amidst the dense trees. Hastily scanning the area, his eyes were drawn to a column of smoke billowing upwards to the northwest, near the foot of a mountain. After consulting his GPS, he discovered that its location deviated significantly from the trail. If he wasn't careful, he could get lost.

There was really only one choice since it was possible that the pilot was still alive and in desperate need of assistance. It took him forty minutes to navigate through the dense forest before he finally reached the crash site. The plane had crashed in a patch of land nestled between the forest and the mountain. Debris from the wreckage was scattered across several hundred metres, with small fires flickering here and there where the jet fuel had ignited.

Lucas watched the scene from afar, hesitant to venture too close. It was not possible that the pilot could have survived if they were still inside the plane at the moment of impact.

Suddenly, the air was filled with the sound of trees cracking and crashing to the ground. Lucas instinctively turned his head towards the source of the noise and noticed a disturbance within the tree line. Whatever had caused the commotion must have been massive, possessing enough force to make the trees fall.

Lucas hesitated, his lip caught between his teeth, torn between the decision to investigate or retreat from the area. Leaving a mystery unanswered went against his very nature; his curiosity was notorious for getting the better of him. His feet led him towards the origin of the noise as if they were acting of their own accord and making the choice for him.

As he made his way through the trees, he took care to avoid making any noise, as he drew closer to the source of the commotion. It only took a few minutes before he beheld the cause of the destruction, and in that instant, he froze. The instinct to flee surged through him, but fear had rendered his legs immobile, chaining him to the spot.

A towering beast stood before him, its head reaching the top of the trees, wings outstretched as if ready to take flight. Its otherworldly size and appearance immediately conjured thoughts of extraterrestrial life. Lucas couldn't help thinking that the alien conspiracy theorists would find his current situation laughable. It's a reminder not to tempt fate by mocking others' beliefs.

Luckily, the beast was facing the other way, unaware of his presence, allowing him time to observe it. The beast resembled a fantastical dinosaur, similar to the animated characters he liked to draw. A peculiar thought entered his mind - could this be an actual Pokemon in real life? Vague recollections of Pokemon flashed in his memory, but he hadn't played any of the games since Pokemon Emerald, so he was unable to identify the one before him.

How could I possibly think such a thing?

Lucas examined the beast's features: a long neck, a pointed white crest extending to fin-like wings on its back, and horn-like tusks framing its jaws. Its light purple body was adorned with darker stripes, grey underarms and waist, and two round purple-striped plates on its shoulders, each encrusted with pink pearl-like crystals. The aesthetics were peculiar, yet undeniably stylish.

Lucas slowly retreated until he found a tree to hide behind. Though his common sense urged him to flee, the life-changing encounter filled him with recklessness—he couldn't bring himself to leave just yet. Opening his backpack, he retrieved paper and pencils to capture the creature's likeness.

He spent the next twenty minutes capturing the essence of the beast on paper. Thankfully, the beast shifted to reveal its side profile and maintained that position, as if it was fully aware that it was posing for him. As soon as he completed the sketch, he clutched the paper to his chest and bid a silent farewell. The moment had come to get out of there.

Lucas was just about to grab his pack when a growl reached his ears, causing him to freeze in place. The sound reminded him of the first time he saw the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, except this growl was even more menacing and raw. It awakened some primal fear within him, causing his fight or flight response to activate and flood his body with adrenaline. Slowly, he turned around and came face to face with the beast, its gaze fixed directly on him. Without warning, the creature opened its mouth, and within it, bright blue energy began to form, rapidly growing in size. There was no mistaking its intentions.

After snapping out of his daze, Lucas swiftly pivoted and ran away. Within moments, a searing heat scorched his back, and he realised that he was not going to escape. He turned to confront the danger but only had a fleeting moment to regret his foolish decisions before his sight was overwhelmed by a dazzling burst of blue energy. Lucas released a blood-curdling scream as the agonising flames consumed him whole. Time appeared to stand still, elongating his torment until the merciful embrace of oblivion finally brought him relief.

Lucas woke up with a sharp scream, his mind filled with vivid images of blue fire and the memory of excruciating pain. Feeling queasy, he sat up and leaned to the side, emptying the contents of his stomach onto the ground. Groaning, he wiped his mouth before realising that something wasn't right.

He patted his body and was pleasantly surprised to find himself still alive. He anxiously scanned his surroundings, anticipating that the beast would return and attack him once again. To his relief, the creature was nowhere to be seen.

Where the hell am I?

The area had undergone a drastic transformation. Steep cliffs enclosed him from both sides, their sheer walls reaching upwards of fifty feet. Climbing these cliffs would present a significant challenge due to their smooth appearance. There weren't many natural handholds available. While he had enjoyed rock climbing recreationally in the past, he hadn't faced a challenge quite like this before.

He stood in a narrow valley, nestled at the bottom of a gorge abundant with lush grass and vibrant foliage. The cliff walls arched outward, obstructing his view and preventing him from gauging the valley's true length. Uncertainty plagued him as he considered the possibility of venturing beyond the valley on foot.

Looking down, his confusion deepened as he noticed that he was wearing unfamiliar attire. His outfit consisted of worn-out blue jeans, paired with a belt and a black t-shirt. He didn't feel cold as the temperature became noticeably warmer than before.

Lucas rummaged through his pockets and unearthed a brown leather wallet. He found a small amount of cash and identification. His interest was piqued by the latter since it was something he hadn't encountered before. The material was made of sturdy plastic and the information was presented similarly to a driver's license. What was truly impressive was the inclusion of digitised text, suggesting that the information could be edited.

The person in the photograph bore a striking resemblance to him, yet there were noticeable differences. While his short, dishevelled blond hair remained the same, his eyes deviated from their usual green hue to a captivating deep chocolate shade. His face appeared more defined, with harmonious facial features and a robust jawline. The person shown in the picture could have been his younger and more attractive sibling. The only problem was that he didn't have a brother.

Reading the information on the card not only failed to clear up confusion but added to it.

Kanto Adventurers Guild Card

Name: Lucas Walker

Sex: Male

Age: 18

Rank: Initiate Ⅰ

An Adventurers Guild? What the heck was going on? He almost expected a slime to appear before him. Wasn't that what usually happened when he was isekie'd into another world? It was an absurd thought. Perhaps the trauma he went through had resulted in some brain damage.

Lucas returned the card to the wallet and then withdrew one of the banknotes. To his surprise, this particular five-dollar bill had a Squirtle printed on it. Was the money some kind of Pokemon-related merchandise? He rubbed the note between his fingers. It certainly felt real enough. Why would it be in his wallet if it wasn't real?

He collapsed onto the ground, his thoughts swirling. Was he merely imagining the events of the past five minutes? Could he be injured, stranded along the trail somewhere, and his mind created an elaborate delusion?

Lucas's eyes scanned the surroundings in search of his backpack. Then, a realisation hit him – he had abandoned it in his frantic attempt to escape the vicious beast. In the midst of his disappointment, something within a nearby bush caught his attention. Intrigued, he extended his arm and seized hold of the object.

It was a canvas rucksack. He unzipped it, and the first thing he laid his eyes upon was the sketch of the creature he had drawn. How did it end up here? He had been certain that it had been completely destroyed in the attack.

Putting the paper aside, he reached into his bag and began pulling out the items. The first few items were nothing special; a sweatshirt, some food wrapped in a cloth, and a bottle of water. Next, he retrieved a thin green book titled 'An Encyclopedia of Berries and Plants from the Pallet Region'.

It felt as though an explosion had gone off in his mind. Pallet Town was the starting location in the first Pokemon games. A ridiculous idea then popped into his head. Surely not. It was inconceivable. Totally insane.

"This doesn't prove anything," Lucas argued with himself.

He set the book aside and reached into the bag, looking for the next item. His hand came across a small metallic object shaped like a ball. An inarticulate sound escaped his lips as he saw what he held in his palm. It was a shrunken Pokeball. His notion, which had once seemed impossible, now appeared possible. When he pressed the button on the Pokeball, it expanded to fit his hand.

After inhaling deeply, he tossed the ball to the ground. To his astonishment, a vibrant crimson light materialised and gradually transformed into a Pokemon. No fucking way.

"Pidgey!"

Lucas was riveted, unable to move, as the Pidgey hopped over to him and let out a chirp. He couldn't help but notice that the Pidgey, while still recognisable, had a few distinct differences from what he had seen in the games. The subdued colours and fiercer appearance gave the Pidgey a more lifelike and realistic quality.

Aside from being incredulous at the Pokemon's existence, another thing grabbed his attention - a floating green text hovered above the heads of the Pidgeys.

Species: Pidgey

Level: 5

Condition: Excellent

Threat Level: Zero

Pidgey gently nudged his leg, before noticing the wrapped food sitting beside him. With a swift motion, it dove towards it, skillfully using its claws and beak to untie the cloth and peck at the crunchy bread hidden within.

Putting aside the Pidgey for the moment, Lucas resumed his search through the bag and discovered three additional items: a compass, a notebook, and another slim book with a blue cover. The notebook functioned as a diary. He flipped through its pages until he arrived at the final entry.

September 9th, 1998

Soon it will be my eighteenth birthday, which means I will be kicked out of the orphanage since I will be considered an adult. To avoid finding myself on the streets, I need to secure a job or find a means of earning Pokedollars.

Fortunately, I received my free Pokemon two weeks earlier, although I can't help but feel disappointed since it is a common Pidgey. The species are abundant in the areas surrounding Pallet Town. Furthermore, it is proving to be quite stubborn, only following my orders half of the time. Establishing a closer relationship with a Pokemon is not an easy task, as it demands both effort and time, and I am short on the latter.

I can only imagine how different things would be if I had been one of the privileged children given Pokemon Eggs at a younger age. It allowed them to establish a strong bond with their partners easier. Catching wild Pokemon with Pokeballs feels primitive in comparison. Moreover, there is always the possibility that my Pidgey may never truly bond with me as its trainer.

Fortunately, I have discovered a concealed valley northwest of Pallet Town with several berry trees that are ready to be harvested. If I manage to find a safe method for hauling the berries out of the valley, I can earn a decent amount of Pokedollars. It will provide me with enough funds to acquire basic items and kickstart my Pokemon Journey.

Lucas let out a frustrated groan. It was getting harder to deny the reality of his situation.

Somehow, he found himself in the Pokemon World. Furthermore, he must have assumed the role of his counterpart in this world, as this would account for the similarities in their appearances. He was eighteen years old in this world, making him three years younger than his previous self. The question posed was whether he had assumed control over a living individual or if they were already deceased prior to his takeover.

Considering the current location, it is possible that the previous host fell off the cliff and died upon impact with the ground. It was a little confusing, though, that there wasn't much damage to his body.

Lucas glanced at the final book in his collection, intrigued by its unusual title: 'A Traveller's Guidebook to the Gamer Navigating the Pokemon World'. He opened it and found a short message written on the front page.

Greetings, Traveller.

You have fallen victim to the havoc caused by one of my children. Although no apology can fully make amends, I have granted you a fresh start in a completely different world. Fortunately, the person you now inhabit recently passed away, allowing for this transition to occur. I have also restored and healed any damage the body may have sustained.

You are now known as Lucas Walker, an orphan hailing from Pallet Town in the Pokémon World. As a final apology, I have bestowed upon you a unique ability, which you are free to utilise as you see fit. Should you have any doubts or inquiries regarding its workings, consult the book.

This message marks our first and last interaction.

Farewell, Arceus.

He gained an understanding of how he ended up here, at the very least. It seemed Arceus held the status of a divine being, evident in its ability to transport him here and offer a chance at a new life. Yet, Lucas couldn't help but question why Arceus couldn't simply restore him to his former life on Earth if it held this much power.

Lucas carefully packed away his belongings, except for the guidebook and the compass. He would use the latter to find his way to civilisation. He needed to find shelter before nightfall. Moving around in the darkness didn't seem safe to him.

It made the most sense to choose Pallet Town since it appeared to be the nearest town to his current location. He also knew the general direction, thanks to the diary. The only downside was the lack of a map that could have given valuable information about the area.

Pidgey gently pecked at his leg, capturing his attention. Its facial expression revealed annoyance as if it were silently protesting, "How can you ignore me?"

Perhaps he was exaggerating the depth of emotion reflected on its face. How intelligent were Pokémon in this world? Did they possess characteristics akin to animals or displayed greater awareness?

"Can you understand me?" Lucas asked, crouching beside the Pidgey.

"Pidgey," the Pokemon nodded. It raised one of its bushy yellow eyebrows. What did that gesture signify? Up until now, it had exhibited a variety of human-like expressions. It was fascinating.

"Would you mind flying up to see if there's a way out of this valley that doesn't require me to climb out?"

Pidgey paused to consider the request before taking off into the sky. Lucas took this as a sign of agreement. After hovering for a few seconds, Pidgey followed the trail heading south.

Pidgey returned after five minutes, landing beside Lucas. It gestured southwards with its wing while nodding repeatedly. Understanding the message, Lucas started moving in that direction. Pidgey perched on his shoulder, securing his position with its sharp talons. He winced as they dug into his shoulder, but fortunately, they didn't pierce through his shirt.

"Hey, make sure you keep an eye out for any trouble," Lucas said to his partner.

Lucas decided to take a look through the guidebook. He wasn't totally oblivious to the concept of a protagonist receiving a system when transmigrating into another world. It was a common trope. He used to read a lot of manga to gain inspiration for his own drawings. It even crossed his mind to create his own. That idea lasted about a week before he realised he couldn't write a compelling story.

Lucas quickly flipped through the pages, only to find that most of them were blank. He stumbled upon a page titled 'Skills', which provided an explanation of how they worked, along with a solitary entry for a skill he obtained automatically upon acquiring the System.

Skill: Insight Level 1/5 Next: 2SP Type: Active/Passive Charges: 10/10

Description: Provides information on a Pokemon's parameters within a certain range. This skill can be either used actively or viewed passively. In regards to the latter, the player can view information about the Pokemon automatically; including its species, level, condition and threat to the player. The active component provides additional information, depending on the skill level, but it costs a charge to use.

According to the guidebook, a charge represents the number of times he was able to use a skill. Fortunately, these charges would regenerate after a twenty-four-hour period, so it wasn't too bad. To improve his skills, he could spend skill points that were earned by gaining experience and levelling up.

Lucas decided to test it out on his Pidgey.

"Insight," he said as he looked at his partner. Active skills were intent-based, so he wouldn't accidentally trigger them by mistake.

A window appeared on top of Pidgey's head.

There was a wealth of information to sort through. Pidgey possessed stats that closely resembled those found in a Pokemon game, but there were a few differences. There was no HP stat. He assumed that 'Condition' indicated the Pokemon's health in general. In addition, there was a luck stat that remained unclear as to its purpose.

Lucas consulted the guidebook again to find that some new information had appeared, pertaining to the terminology that was featured in Pidgey's status window. The new information indicated that the guidebook only provided additional information as he came across it.

He was partially correct about the 'Condition' stat. It encompassed both health and stamina. The stamina component indicated the energy that Pokemon utilised to perform moves and strengthen their bodies. There were seven levels of 'Condition', ranked from highest to lowest: Perfect, Excellent, Healthy, Fair, Depleted, Critical, and Fainted.

The luck stat affects various aspects of the Pokemon during battle. It increases the likelihood of scoring a critical hit, helps resist status effects, increases the chance to inflict status effects, and also increases the efficiency of certain moves.

"So, what should I call you?" Lucas asked Pidgey, after dismissing the window.

He couldn't understand why the previous host forgot to give him a name. If he was worried so much about building a strong relationship with Pidgey, he should have named him right from the beginning. There is power in a name, which gives a sense of individuality to the bearer.

Pidgey shrugged its shoulder, a gesture eerily reminiscent of a human. It seemed entirely uninterested in receiving a name.

"Are you male? Nod once to indicate yes and twice to indicate no."

Pidgey gave a single nod. Lucas took a few moments to choose a suitable name, ultimately settling on one that appealed to him.

"I will name you Icarus," Lucas said. "Though the name carries some negative connotations, it also has a positive meaning. It symbolises being free of limitations, allowing you to fully realise your potential. Just imagine yourself transforming into the mighty Pidgeot, reigning supreme in the sky like an emperor.

The Pidgey, now known as Icarus, seemed to take a liking to his name. He spread his wings and chirped with excitement.

He examined Icarus' status once again and observed a hundred-point increase in favourability. It was quite a nice reward for merely giving a name to his partner.

Lucas spent the next ten minutes in an attempt to bring up his own status window. Eventually, he discovered the key phrase. It took him several attempts and countless variations before stumbling upon this answer.

"Player's menu."

In contrast to Pokemon, his system was basic and didn't have any stats, but that was to be expected. The Pokemon were the ones with all the power, and humans had to capture and form bonds with them to harness that power.

Lucas carried on along the valley, being careful where he stepped. He didn't want to disturb any Pokemon hiding in the grass. After he walked for about fifteen minutes, the valley broadened, and he stumbled upon a tree heavy with blue fruits, each the size of plums. Consulting his Encyclopedia, he identified the fruit as an Oran Berry, which happened to be the most commonly found variety. Although not particularly valuable, if Lucas could locate a few more Oran trees, it might be worth something.

Unfortunately, he couldn't take all of the berries with him. He could squeeze a few into his bag, but it wasn't worth the effort. His top priority was locating a town and securing accommodation for the night. If the sun behaved like the one on Earth, he estimated he had only a few hours of daylight remaining.

He didn't know why the berries had not been eaten by wild Pokemon or found by other people. Regardless, he could return later to harvest them.

"Let's go," Lucas said to Icarus, but then he realised that his partner's attention was directed towards something behind them.

Icarus let out a chirp, but this time it lacked its usual cheerfulness. Instead, the sound was low and tinged with an unsettling tension. Lucas turned around slowly and his eyes fell upon a massive Arbok. The Pokemon was silently slithering its way through the grass directly towards him.

Species: Arbok

Level: 38

Condition: Healthy

Threat Level: Extremely High

"Freaking hell," Lucas cursed.

When Arbok noticed that Lucas was aware of its presence, it hissed and raised itself on its tail, in an attempt to intimidate him. The strategy proved to be alarmingly successful. The Arbok extended itself to its full length, towering above him in a truly intimidating manner.

Arbok's level exceeded Icarus's by more than sevenfold, leaving him no chance to win. Lucas frantically spun around and bolted in the opposite direction, consumed by the dread of the impending chase from the Arbok. At that moment, the significance of why the valley was left undisturbed became crystal clear to him.

Icarus flew ahead with the assurance that the Arbok would not target him, as there was an easier target available.

Even though Lucas ran as fast as he could, he wasn't a sprinter. His breathing was laboured, both from exertion and panic, as he heard grass rustle behind him. Arbok was closing in fast.

Icarus let out a chirp, catching Lucas's attention. As he looked ahead, his eyes landed on the sight of long vines dangling from one side of the cliff face. A surge of determination filled his heart as he realised that his best opportunity in escaping lay ahead of him.

Lucas mustered a final surge of energy, propelling himself forward in a swift dash. He leapt through the air and grasped a hold of the vine tightly. He swiftly pulled himself up, skillfully using both his legs and upper body strength to climb upwards.

Two monstrous fangs mercilessly pierced into his leg, and Lucas released a gut-wrenching scream of torment. Unbearable agony ravaged his body, as though he had been skewered by searing hot fire pokers. The vine nearly slipped from his grasp but he held on with sheer determination.

Arbok squirmed, attempting to wrench him free from the frail lifeline. The excruciating torment intensified, causing Lucas to succumb to anguished sobs, his spirit broken. His consciousness started to fade away, and the vines slipped through his trembling fingers. He plummeted to the ground below.

Lucas barely registered the force of the impact. Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, only to witness the nightmarish scene of the Arbok stretching its grotesque jaws unnaturally, in an attempt to swallow him whole. Its eyes leered at him mockingly.

It was all over. He was doomed to perish in the most terrifying manner imaginable.

"Mr Mime!"

So, what do you think? Lucas meets a familiar character next chapter. There will be fewer OCs in this story and more canonical characters.

Thanks for reading.
